Creating the smart artifacts that constitute these environments requires augmenting their standard functionality to support a new quality of interaction and behavior.A system-oriented, importunate smartness approach creates an environment that gives individual smart artifacts or the environment itself certain self-directed actions based on previously collected information. For example, a space can be smart by having and exploiting knowledge about the persons and artifacts currently situated within its borders. In contrast, a people-oriented, empowering smartness approach places the empowering function in the foreground by assuming that smart spaces make people smarter. This approach empowers users to make decisions and take actions as mature and responsible people.Although in some cases it might be more efficient if the system doesnýt ask for a userýs feedback and confirmation at every step in an action chain, the overall design rationale should aim to keep the user in the loop and in control whenever possible.}},

They have proved to be excellent tools in feature extraction and classification. We propose an inspection method for pattern recognition and classification of two dimensional translation variant security elements such as stripes, kinegrams and others, which are widely used as applications in bank note printing. The system is based on discrete non linear translation invariant circular transforms and fuzzy pattern classification. Nonlinear discrete circular transforms are adaptable transforms, which can be optimized for different application tasks, such as translation variant object analysis and position location. They are mainly used as generators for feature vectors. Even though, the feature vector is theoretically translation invariant, the object movement creates a translation tolerant feature vector, because in real systems and applications many problems can occur, such as signal and optical distortions. Therefore, the features should be further analysed by a fuzzy pattern classifier. Implementation of the transforms and fuzzy pattern classifier in radix-2-structures is possible, allowing fast calculations with a computational complexity of O(N) up to O(Nld(N)). Furthermore, the algorithms can be implemented in one Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), which operates with 40 MHz clock rate.}},

abstract = {{In this paper, we address three major issues, look at their interaction and combination and present our results on how to arrive at solutions for these issues. The issues are: 1) supporting informal communication and atmosphere in organisations, 2) the role and potential of ambient displays in future work environments, and 3) the combination of mostly static artefacts that are integrated in the architectural environment with mobile devices carried by people. Our results can be considered as steps towards the design and realization of what we call “social architectural spaces” in the context of future work environments. These environments will be populated with a range of different smart artefacts that are designed to facilitate awareness and notification as well as informal communication. We address a range of spaces in office buildings including public spaces, e.g., in the hallway, the foyer, and the cafeteria that have not been the focus of research so far. In particular, we present two artefacts: the Hello.Wall, a wall-size large ambient display, and the ViewPort, a mobile handheld device. They are interacting with each other via wireless networks and different types of sensing technology. The artefacts and the software were developed in the EU-funded “Disappearing Computer”- project “Ambient Agoras: Dynamic Information Clouds in a Hybrid Worlds”.}},

As an integral part of the physical environment, Hello.Wall constitutes a seeding element of a social architectural space conveying awareness information and atmospheres in organizations or at specific places. Therefore, power converters which do not require heavy inductors are of great interest. In this contrbution power converters with non-resonant output filters are investigated fpr reducing weight and volume ofe the magnetic components. The design of such a power converter for a travelling wave type ultrasonic type motor is presented. Implementation highlights like the design of the filters and the concept of an universal digital modulator are outlined and measured results are presented. Finally the concept is compared to resonant converters under consideration of weight, volume and efficiency.}},

In this contribution the operating behaviour ofUPC is discussed with respect to their transfer function, the necessary excitation and their terminal behaviour. The latter definies the demands for the power supply, while considering different parameter combinations for bandwidth, quality and piezoelectric capacitance. The main part of this contribution is concerned with the development and realisation of a laboratory power supply for UPC, which is of resonant type.}},

The control scheme consists of inner control loops with respect to the oscillation systems, offering all meaningful degrees of freedom for adjusting the traveling bending wave, and outer control loops for torque and speed. After a brief review on modeling the actuator and presentation of a parameter identification method, the control scheme is developed and verified by measurements on a prototype drive system, several measures for the compensation of nonlinearities and temperature effects are developed, and achieved improvements are discussed with respect to the special properties of this novel actuator. Finally, the developed drive is applied to an "active control stick"}},

Based on a special designedhardware environment an advanced control scheme for inverter-fed travelling wave type ultrasonic motors is pre-sented. After several modelling steps, including an averaged model for the controller design, a speed control schemeis implemented on a prototype drive. It is realized as an outer control loop of an underlaid voltage and travellingbending wave vector controller. Basing on an averaged drive model, which reflects the slow dynamic behavior of the drive's ultrasonic oscillations by time varying fundamental Fourier coefficients, a cascaded two-phase vector control scheme is designed. The novel drive control divides into an inner voltage and outer bending wave control compensating couplings and suppressing the beat characteristics. Since an amplitude modulation is applied instead of frequency modulation, the well known pull out phenomenon is eliminated in general. By means of an online frequency adaptation to the stator's resonance, the drive's performance is optimized remarkably.}},
