Two different sanitation concepts were tested. One concept comprised the use of gravity separation toilets, the other used vacuum separation toilets. Results from a life-cycle-assessment investigation show that the new sanitation concepts are more sustainable. A cost analysis for an existing residential area did not prove lower costs for the new sanitation concepts in this special case. The experience from this demonstration project shows that prior to a widespread use of the new sanitation concepts, several improvements have to be made. One important issue is the improvement of separation toilets. Since nutrient recycling, water saving and reuse as well energy reduction become more and more important, further research should be undertaken in this field.","lang":"eng"}],"keyword":["Cost calculation","fertiliser","gravity separation toilets","life-cycle-assessment","thermophile digester","urine treatment","vacuum separation toilets"],"page":"239-249","intvolume":" 56","volume":56,"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"place":" Bristol ","publication_status":"published","publisher":"IWA","date_updated":"2026-07-24T12:45:07Z","quality_controlled":"1","status":"public","department":[{"_id":"DEP8010"}],"doi":" https://doi.org/10.2166/wst.2007.577"},{"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://iwaponline.com/wst/article-abstract/49/8/109/10524/Some-aspects-of-the-environmental-labour-market-in?redirectedFrom=fulltext"}],"title":"Some aspects of the environmental labour market in five European countries and conclusions with respect to environmental curricula","year":2004,"citation":{"short":"J. The conditions and requirements were grouped into 11 categories showing clear similarities and differences between the five countries. Further evaluation of the data gives evidence that the private sector plays a significant role for technical environmental professionals in Europe. As a central task, conclusions regarding degree and knowledge requirements, respectively, and the importance of a variety of skills are drawn. Suggestions are made how the findings can be accounted for in environmental curricula.
