abstract = {{As part of a three-year monitoring program (between 2022 and 2024), the butterfly fauna was surveyed on 74 transect sites within the FFH areas “Burgberg, Heinsener Klippen, Rühler Schweiz” (DE-4022-302) and “Ith” (DE-3823-301) (located in the districts of Holzminden and Hildesheim, Lower Saxony, Germany). The aim was to assess the effectiveness of current grassland management and land-use practices and to develop specific recommendations for ecological optimization. In total, 53 species of butterflies and burnet moths (Zygaenidae) were recorded, including many with low population densities and high conservation concern. Data collection was carried out using standardized transect mapping methods. The results revealed significant differences in species richness and composition between habitat types, with dry calcareous grasslands exhibiting particularly high ecological value. At the same time, the uneven distribution of land-use types across biotope categories hampers a clear assessment of management effects. Based on species occurrence and habitat evaluation, site-specific management recommendations were developed, such as extensive grazing, phased mowing, and the creation or preservation of old-grass strips. These recommendations are described in detail for each transect section in the project report on which this work is based on. The importance of small-scale structural diversity, functional habitat connectivity, and flexible, weather-adapted management practices is emphasized. The findings highlight the urgent need for a differentiated and adaptive habitat conservation strategy that effectively promotes insect diversity in grassland ecosystems.}},
