The complexity of such a CPS causes difficulties in evaluating the effects of a component change. Accordingly, product developers need an assistance system to quantify the impact of a component change on hardware, software, system functions, and production processes. Therefore, this paper focuses on concepts to evaluate the effects of component, functional, and process changes and contributes to its clarification and further understanding of the importance and requirements for such an assistance system. The literature review assesses the identified methods regarding their objectives, application objects, level of automation, and relations characteristics. However, the literature review pointed out that the change prediction method from Clarkson et al. (2004) is well-established in the literature and able to quantify the impact of a change.","lang":"eng"}],"conference":{"start_date":"2023-07-24","end_date":"2023-07-28","location":"Bordeaux, Frankreich","name":"24th International Conference on Engineering Design (ICED 2023)"},"publisher":"Cambridge University Press","quality_controlled":"1"},{"oa":"1","keyword":["Complexity Management","Low-Code Development Platform","Process Model for Selection and Implementation"],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"publication_identifier":{"isbn":["978-1-958651-88-9"],"issn":["2771-0718"]},"publication":"Human Systems Engineering and Design (IHSED 2023): Future Trends and Applications","date_created":"2023-10-25T09:31:08Z","date_updated":"2023-10-25T09:31:31Z","editor":[{"first_name":"Waldemar","full_name":"Karwowski, Waldemar","last_name":"Karwowski"},{"last_name":"Ahram","full_name":"Ahram, Tareq","first_name":"Tareq"},{"first_name":"Mario","full_name":"Milicevic, Mario","last_name":"Milicevic"},{"first_name":"Darko","last_name":"Etinger","full_name":"Etinger, Darko"},{"first_name":"Krunoslav","last_name":"Zubrinic","full_name":"Zubrinic, Krunoslav"}],"year":"2023","author":[{"last_name":"Hinrichsen","first_name":"Sven","id":"49010","full_name":"Hinrichsen, Sven"},{"first_name":"Alexander","id":"71431","full_name":"Nikolenko, Alexander","last_name":"Nikolenko"},{"last_name":"Becker","full_name":"Becker, Kai Leon","first_name":"Kai Leon"},{"first_name":"Benjamin","full_name":"Adrian, Benjamin","id":"42266","last_name":"Adrian"}],"main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1"}],"status":"public","title":"How to select and implement a suitable Low-Code Development Platform","citation":{"short":"S. This puts it in contrast to previous generations of programming languages. The advantages of low-code development are manifold, including the increase of software development capacities through a partial decentralization of the development process, speeding up software development through the low-code approach, and designing software with a strong user-centric focus. Using a low-code development platform can help companies adapt their own business processes to changing requirements more quickly and to make complexity resulting, for example, from heterogeneous customer wishes, manageable. Since many low-code development platforms are available, it is not easy for companies to select and successfully introduce a platform that meets their requirements. For this reason, this article presents a procedure model that assists in the process of selecting and implementing a platform.","lang":"eng"}],"publisher":"AHFE International","quality_controlled":"1","publication_status":"published"},{"user_id":"83781","type":"conference_editor_article","doi":"10.35199/dsm2023.07","_id":"10962","publication_status":"published","publisher":"The Design Society","abstract":[{"text":"The increasing number of product artifacts (e.g., mechanical or electronic components, software functions, documents) confronts small and medium-sized companies with the challenge of assessing change effects. The lack of knowledge of artifact relationships causes problems, such as outdated documentation, lack of coordination with affected disciplines, or delayed changes. The Design Structure Matrix (DSM) can clearly represent the elements and relationships of complex systems. This paper presents an assistance system for intuitive visualization of engineering change effects using existing DSM-based methods for complexity management. The implemented algorithms compute graph layouts, cluster analyses, and change predictions in the form of change risk, time, and cost. An application example of a 3D-printed intelligent lamp demonstrates the approach's viability. The paper concludes with a discussion of the benefits and future activities.","lang":"eng"}],"conference":{"end_date":"2023-10-05","start_date":"2023-10-03","location":"Gothenburg, Sweden","name":"25th International Dependency and Structure Modeling Conference (DSM)"},"department":[{"_id":"DEP7022"},{"_id":"DEP1306"},{"_id":"DEP7001"}],"editor":[{"full_name":"Stowe, Harold","last_name":"Stowe","first_name":"Harold"},{"first_name":"Tyson R.","full_name":"Browning, Tyson R.","last_name":"Browning"},{"full_name":"Eppinger, Steven D.","last_name":"Eppinger","first_name":"Steven D."},{"last_name":"Trauer","first_name":"Jakob","full_name":"Trauer, Jakob"},{"first_name":"Christopher","last_name":"Langner","full_name":"Langner, Christopher"},{"first_name":"Matthias","last_name":"Kreimeyer","full_name":"Kreimeyer, Matthias"},{"last_name":"Isaksson","first_name":"Ola","full_name":"Isaksson, Ola"},{"full_name":"Panarotto, Massimo","first_name":"Massimo","last_name":"Panarotto"},{"full_name":"Brahma, Arindam","last_name":"Brahma","first_name":"Arindam"}],"date_updated":"2025-06-26T07:55:50Z","date_created":"2024-01-24T10:17:16Z","publication":"DS 126: Proceedings of the 25th International DSM Conference (DSM 2023)","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"keyword":["Graph-based Visualization","Assistance System","Engineering Change Management","Complexity Management"],"oa":"1","citation":{"havard":"J.-P. Furthermore, mass customization and the increasing usage of AI even in manual assembly offers new opportunities as well as it creates new challenges. OBJECTIVE:The trend towards mass customization in turn leads to increased complexity in production, which results in additional mental workload. This effect will continue in the foreseeable future. METHOD:Especially for small and medium sized companies, the backbone of Germany’s economy, automatization and Human-Robot-Collaboration will take time to develop. Information assistance systems are and will be a bridging technology to help organizations to manage increasing complexity and the mental workload of their employees to not only boost productivity but also keep their workforce healthy. The ongoing demographic change further underlines the need to use information assistance systems to compensate possible age-associated deficits, but also keep older employees committed to their work and avoid effects of disengagement or disenfranchisement through participatory ergonomics. RESULTS: Information assistance systems can only develop their inherent potential if they are designed to support employees of varying age, competence levels, and affinity for technology. Participatory development and early engagement are key factors for an increased acceptance and usage of the systems as well as the individualization to make it suitable for each individual employee. CONCLUSION:Expanding the functionalities to an adaptive assistance system, using physiological correlates of mental workload as an input, is conceivable in the future. Based on the order information, the required parts are taken from flow racks and assembled step by step to build a functional unit. The existing assembly concepts have two decisive disadvantages in operational practice. First, a large number of components to be provided leads to long walking distances at the work station or line. Second, as the complexity of the assembly task increases, the informational portion of the work increases, so that paper-based information provision can lead to unnecessary assembly errors and additional times. For these reasons, a compacted assembly system has been developed in which, firstly, material is supplied via driven carousels and, secondly, the necessary information is provided to the operator via a cognitive assistance system. The article shows that this concept can reduce walking distances while avoiding assembly errors and additional times.","lang":"eng"}],"conference":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management (IEEM) ","location":"Kuala Lumpur","end_date":"2022-12-10","start_date":"2022-12-07"},"department":[{"_id":"DEP7020"},{"_id":"DEP1305"}],"corporate_editor":["IEEE International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management","Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers","IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society "],"date_updated":"2024-08-02T14:04:53Z","publication_identifier":{"eisbn":["978-1-6654-8687-3"],"isbn":["978-1-6654-8688-0"]},"publication":"IEEM2022 : IEEE International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management (IEEM) : Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 07-10 December 2022 ","date_created":"2023-03-28T06:36:41Z","keyword":["assembly system","assistance system","complexity"],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"citation":{"short":"S. SMEs require a solution for documenting and analyzing the functional relationships between multiple domains such as products, software, and processes. The German research project FuPEP “Funktionsorientiertes Komplexitätsmanagement in allen Phasen der Produktentstehung” aims to address this issue by developing an assistance system that supports product developers by visualizing functional relationships. This paper presents the methodology and results of the assistance system’s requirements elicitation with two SMEs. Conducting the elicitation during a global pandemic, we discuss its application using specific techniques in light of COVID-19. We model problems and their effects regarding complexity management in product development in a system dynamics model. The most important requirements and use cases elicited are presented, and the requirements elicitation methodology and results are discussed. Additionally, we present a multilayer software architecture design of the assistance system. Our case study suggests a relationship between fear of a missing project focus among project participants and the restriction of requirements elicitation techniques to those possible via web conferencing tools.","lang":"eng"}],"issue":"11","department":[{"_id":"DEP7020"},{"_id":"DEP7022"},{"_id":"DEP1306"}]},{"publication_identifier":{"issn":["2640-3498"]},"publication":"24th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Statistics (AISTATS)","date_created":"2025-04-14T13:58:16Z","editor":[{"full_name":"Banerjee, A.","last_name":"Banerjee","first_name":"A."},{"full_name":"Fukumizu, K.","first_name":"K.","last_name":"Fukumizu"}],"date_updated":"2025-06-26T13:42:36Z","keyword":["FUNCTIONAL REGRESSION","PREDICTION","ALGORITHMS","COMPLEXITY","MODELS"],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"title":"Linearly Constrained Gaussian Processes with Boundary Conditions","citation":{"chicago-de":"Lange-Hegermann, Markus. 2021. Linearly Constrained Gaussian Processes with Boundary Conditions. The objective of this paper is to identify potentials for improvement of shop floor management in the context of digitalization and to identify fields of action. As a result, the paper shows four categories of deficits in shop floor management, respectively information management. First, insufficiently designed business processes lead to additional administrative work for shop floor managers. Second, shop floor management can be strengthened by improving e-mail communication. Third, the meeting organization and fourth, the reporting offer potential for improvement. The creation of reports and the preparation of key figures, for example, involve routine activities that do not add value and can be partially automated. Therefore, as part of the project, a shop floor board was prototypically developed using a low-code development platform in order to demonstrate the potential of this approach.","lang":"eng"}],"date_updated":"2023-09-08T06:54:57Z","editor":[{"last_name":"Ahram","first_name":"T.","full_name":"Ahram, T."},{"full_name":"Taiar, R.","last_name":"Taiar","first_name":"R."},{"full_name":"Langlois, K.","first_name":"K.","last_name":"Langlois"},{"first_name":"A.","full_name":"Choplin, A.","last_name":"Choplin"}],"publication":"Human Interaction, Emerging Technologies and Future Applications III : Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing, vol 1253","date_created":"2021-12-21T15:57:56Z","keyword":["Manual assembly","Complexity","Information management"],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"citation":{"ama":"Hinrichsen S, Adrian B, Schulz A. With the help of assistance systems, the process of information absorption and processing can be designed in a more economical and human-oriented way. Despite the potentials of such systems, companies pay too little attention to the informational design of assembly systems, resulting in a number of significant deficits in information management. To identify such deficits in operational practice, a questionnaire has been developed. This allows the potential use of informational assistance systems for an assembly system to be estimated. On the one hand, these technologies enable shorter product lifecycles and servitization, but on the other hand, the increasing technical complexity of the equipment makes its operation and maintenance a challenge for workers. Assistance systems using pervasive technologies can bridge the gap between the abilities of the workers and the demands of handling technical complexity by enriching workplace activities with relevant, context-dependent information. In this paper, we present an application that replaces a conventional, paper-based maintenance manual with digital, Augmented Reality based instructions that are delivered at the appropriate place and time."}],"publisher":"IEEE","date_created":"2021-01-06T13:59:08Z","publication":"2019 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PerCom Workshops)","publication_identifier":{"isbn":["978-1-5386-9151-9"]},"date_updated":"2023-03-15T13:49:51Z","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"keyword":["Industry 4.0","Cyber Physical Systems","Augmented Reality","Complexity","Maintenance","HoloLens"],"title":"Worker Assistance in Smart Production Environments using Pervasive Technologies","citation":{"ieee":"H. In the so-called multi-product- or mixed-model-assembly, the employee has to constantly make choices between different alternatives. This concerns e. g. parts to be assembled, tools, fixing methods or materials that can be processed in very different combinations. From the perspective of a worker the assembly process becomes a continuous choice process, setting increasingly higher informational and cognitive demands and increasing mental strain. This has a negative impact on labor productivity. Information Assistance Systems are considered appropriate tools to take moderating influence on this development. However, it should be considered how complex demands are as well as how pronounced subjective resources and mental strain are. Based on these considerations, recommendations for the design of information assistance systems are derived.\r\n\r\nPractical Relevance: Manufacturing industry faces the demanding task of producing more and more product variants even in manual assembly. As a result, assembly workers have to process more information and are therefore exposed to greater stress. In order to avoid the resulting loss of labor productivity, assembly systems are increasingly integrating informational assistance systems that, on the one hand, support cognitive processing and, on the other hand, reduce stress. Various design recommendations are given for such informational assistance systems.","lang":"eng"}],"issue":"4"},{"title":"Addressing Uncertainties in Complex Manufacturing Environments: A Multidisciplinary Approach","volume":793,"citation":{"ufg":"Dhiman, Hitesh et. al. We develop a generic framework for hypothetical workplaces to investigate how complexities create to uncertainties. Complexity may be explained through the Level of Abstractions used to model a system, and it is encountered in its dynamic form as an alteration of information flow between agents in a phenomenological relationship. Analyzing these systems as ‘information flows’ brings to light the uncertainity(ies) the workers of the future will have to cope with. We develop first concepts that can be used to develop heuristics to manage these uncertainties in complex manufacturing environments. These heuristics may also be useful in creating optimized workplaces that combine the individual abilities of both humans and machines. The framework proposed in this paper may be subject for an empirical validation of these heuristics in the future."}],"publisher":"Springer","type":"conference","user_id":"15514","intvolume":" 793","place":"Cham","_id":"4319","doi":"10.1007/978-3-319-94196-7_10"},{"volume":793,"citation":{"ama":"Dhiman H, Plewe DA, Röcker C. The framework proposed in this paper may be subject for an empirical validation of these heuristics in the future. Since the CPS have to act autonomously, a procedure for automated decision making has to be designed. In our work we concentrate on the design of a decision procedure by a fuzzy classifier approach. For our application on decision making in an industrial environment, a fuzzy approach was picked as convenient classification technique regarding balance between accuracy and computational time. We present a supervised learning method called FUZZY-ComRef which combines fuzzy classification and our combinatorial refinement method, called ComRef [1]. Due to the fact that fuzzy classification might behave inaccurately for some datasets, the aim of our approach is to improve the results provided by the (stand-alone) fuzzy classification. We show the performance of FUZZY-ComRef evaluated on the samples from the UCI Repository and on our real-world dataset Motor Drive Diagnosis. In addition, we discuss the quadratic computational time problem arising from the combinatorial nature of ComRef. Furthermore, we show based on real-time evaluations that within parallelisation the proposed FUZZY-ComRef is suitable to many applications in CPS."}],"department":[{"_id":"DEP5023"}],"author":[{"last_name":"Dörksen","full_name":"Dörksen, Helene","id":"46416","first_name":"Helene"},{"last_name":"Lohweg","full_name":"Lohweg, Volker","id":"1804","first_name":"Volker","orcid":"0000-0002-3325-7887"}],"year":2015,"citation":{"chicago":"Dörksen, Helene, and Volker Lohweg. “Automated Fuzzy Classification with Combinatorial Refinement.” In 20th IEEE International Conference on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation (ETFA) Luxembourg, Sep 2015. .
