text: During product development, the customer or internal stakeholders initiate
changes concerning the components or functions of a cyber-physical system (CPS).
The complexity of such a CPS causes difficulties in evaluating the effects of
a component change. Accordingly, product developers need an assistance system
to quantify the impact of a component change on hardware, software, system functions,
and production processes. Therefore, this paper focuses on concepts to evaluate
the effects of component, functional, and process changes and contributes to its
clarification and further understanding of the importance and requirements for
such an assistance system. The literature review assesses the identified methods
regarding their objectives, application objects, level of automation, and relations
characteristics. However, the literature review pointed out that the change prediction
method from Clarkson et al. (2004) is well-established in the literature and able
to quantify the impact of a change.

text: Low-code programming allows the creation of software applications using a
graphical user interface with minimal classical programming code ("low code")
and without requiring extensive programming knowledge. This puts it in contrast
to previous generations of programming languages. The advantages of low-code development
are manifold, including the increase of software development capacities through
a partial decentralization of the development process, speeding up software development
through the low-code approach, and designing software with a strong user-centric
focus. Using a low-code development platform can help companies adapt their own
business processes to changing requirements more quickly and to make complexity
resulting, for example, from heterogeneous customer wishes, manageable. Since
many low-code development platforms are available, it is not easy for companies
to select and successfully introduce a platform that meets their requirements.
For this reason, this article presents a procedure model that assists in the process
of selecting and implementing a platform.

text: The increasing number of product artifacts (e.g., mechanical or electronic
components, software functions, documents) confronts small and medium-sized companies
with the challenge of assessing change effects. The lack of knowledge of artifact
relationships causes problems, such as outdated documentation, lack of coordination
with affected disciplines, or delayed changes. The Design Structure Matrix (DSM)
can clearly represent the elements and relationships of complex systems. This
paper presents an assistance system for intuitive visualization of engineering
change effects using existing DSM-based methods for complexity management. The
implemented algorithms compute graph layouts, cluster analyses, and change predictions
in the form of change risk, time, and cost. An application example of a 3D-printed
intelligent lamp demonstrates the approach's viability. The paper concludes with
a discussion of the benefits and future activities.

text: 'BACKGROUND:The future of work in Germany is shaped by megatrends like globalization,
automatization, digitization, and the demographic change. Furthermore, mass customization
and the increasing usage of AI even in manual assembly offers new opportunities
as well as it creates new challenges. OBJECTIVE:The trend towards mass customization
in turn leads to increased complexity in production, which results in additional
mental workload. This effect will continue in the foreseeable future. METHOD:Especially
for small and medium sized companies, the backbone of Germany’s economy, automatization
and Human-Robot-Collaboration will take time to develop. Information assistance
systems are and will be a bridging technology to help organizations to manage
increasing complexity and the mental workload of their employees to not only boost
productivity but also keep their workforce healthy. The ongoing demographic change
further underlines the need to use information assistance systems to compensate
possible age-associated deficits, but also keep older employees committed to their
work and avoid effects of disengagement or disenfranchisement through participatory
ergonomics. RESULTS: Information assistance systems can only develop their inherent
potential if they are designed to support employees of varying age, competence
levels, and affinity for technology. Participatory development and early engagement
are key factors for an increased acceptance and usage of the systems as well as
the individualization to make it suitable for each individual employee. CONCLUSION:Expanding
the functionalities to an adaptive assistance system, using physiological correlates

text: In mechanical engineering, individual functional units of a machine are often
assembled by one operator at single workstations or at one-piece flow lines. Based
on the order information, the required parts are taken from flow racks and assembled
step by step to build a functional unit. The existing assembly concepts have two
decisive disadvantages in operational practice. First, a large number of components
to be provided leads to long walking distances at the work station or line. Second,
as the complexity of the assembly task increases, the informational portion of
the work increases, so that paper-based information provision can lead to unnecessary
assembly errors and additional times. For these reasons, a compacted assembly
system has been developed in which, firstly, material is supplied via driven carousels
and, secondly, the necessary information is provided to the operator via a cognitive
assistance system. The article shows that this concept can reduce walking distances
while avoiding assembly errors and additional times.

text: Technological progress, upcoming cyber-physical systems, and limited resources
confront small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with the challenge of complexity
management in product development projects spanning over the entire product lifecycle.
SMEs require a solution for documenting and analyzing the functional relationships
between multiple domains such as products, software, and processes. The German
research project FuPEP “Funktionsorientiertes Komplexitätsmanagement in allen
Phasen der Produktentstehung” aims to address this issue by developing an assistance
system that supports product developers by visualizing functional relationships.
This paper presents the methodology and results of the assistance system’s requirements
elicitation with two SMEs. Conducting the elicitation during a global pandemic,
we discuss its application using specific techniques in light of COVID-19. We
model problems and their effects regarding complexity management in product development
in a system dynamics model. The most important requirements and use cases elicited
are presented, and the requirements elicitation methodology and results are discussed.
Additionally, we present a multilayer software architecture design of the assistance
system. Our case study suggests a relationship between fear of a missing project
focus among project participants and the restriction of requirements elicitation
techniques to those possible via web conferencing tools.

text: 'One goal in Bayesian machine learning is to encode prior knowledge into prior
distributions, to model data efficiently. We consider prior knowledge from systems
of linear partial differential equations together with their boundary conditions.
We construct multi-output Gaussian process priors with realizations in the solution
set of such systems, in particular only such solutions can be represented by Gaussian
process regression. The construction is fully algorithmic via Grobner bases and
it does not employ any approximation. It builds these priors combining two parametrizations
via a pullback: the first parametrizes the solutions for the system of differential
equations and the second parametrizes all functions adhering to the boundary conditions.'

text: The task of shop floor management is to ensure high effectiveness and efficiency
of a production system. The objective of this paper is to identify potentials
for improvement of shop floor management in the context of digitalization and
to identify fields of action. As a result, the paper shows four categories of
deficits in shop floor management, respectively information management. First,
insufficiently designed business processes lead to additional administrative work
for shop floor managers. Second, shop floor management can be strengthened by
improving e-mail communication. Third, the meeting organization and fourth, the
reporting offer potential for improvement. The creation of reports and the preparation
of key figures, for example, involve routine activities that do not add value
and can be partially automated. Therefore, as part of the project, a shop floor
board was prototypically developed using a low-code development platform in order
to demonstrate the potential of this approach.

text: Because of the trend towards smaller batch sizes and customer-specific products,
employees in assembly have to absorb and process more and more information. With
the help of assistance systems, the process of information absorption and processing
can be designed in a more economical and human-oriented way. Despite the potentials
of such systems, companies pay too little attention to the informational design
of assembly systems, resulting in a number of significant deficits in information
management. To identify such deficits in operational practice, a questionnaire
has been developed. This allows the potential use of informational assistance
systems for an assembly system to be estimated. In this article, results from
an exploratory factor analysis of the developed instrument will be presented and
interpreted as a basis for the further development of the questionnaire.

text: More and more complex products are being fitted in small batches in manual
assembly. Because of this, more information needs to be collected from employees
and implemented in appropriate actions. At the same time, the informational design
of assembly systems often shows deficits in operational practice. Manual assembly
processes can be made more economical, reliable, and human-oriented with the help
of informational assistance systems. Testing was carried out in the Laboratory
for Industrial Engineering at the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences
and Arts to verify this potential. Initial results on the use of augmented reality
(AR) glasses in comparison to providing information in a paper-based format are
    presented.

text: Recent trends towards digitization in the industrial domain are also driving
profound socio-technical changes. On the one hand, these technologies enable shorter
product lifecycles and servitization, but on the other hand, the increasing technical
complexity of the equipment makes its operation and maintenance a challenge for
workers. Assistance systems using pervasive technologies can bridge the gap between
the abilities of the workers and the demands of handling technical complexity
by enriching workplace activities with relevant, context-dependent information.
In this paper, we present an application that replaces a conventional, paper-based
maintenance manual with digital, Augmented Reality based instructions that are
delivered at the appropriate place and time.

text: Die Komplexität in der manuellen Montage steigt. In der sog. Mehrprodukt-

text: "Manual assembly increases in complexity. In the so-called multi-product-
or mixed-model-assembly, the employee has to constantly make choices between different
alternatives. This concerns e. g. parts to be assembled, tools, fixing methods
or materials that can be processed in very different combinations. From the perspective
of a worker the assembly process becomes a continuous choice process, setting
increasingly higher informational and cognitive demands and increasing mental
strain. This has a negative impact on labor productivity. Information Assistance
Systems are considered appropriate tools to take moderating influence on this
development. However, it should be considered how complex demands are as well
as how pronounced subjective resources and mental strain are. Based on these considerations,
recommendations for the design of information assistance systems are derived.\r\n\r\nPractical
Relevance: Manufacturing industry faces the demanding task of producing more and
more product variants even in manual assembly. As a result, assembly workers have
to process more information and are therefore exposed to greater stress. In order
to avoid the resulting loss of labor productivity, assembly systems are increasingly
integrating informational assistance systems that, on the one hand, support cognitive
processing and, on the other hand, reduce stress. Various design recommendations
are given for such informational assistance systems."

text: With the introduction of intelligent and autonomous systems into factory environments,
workplaces where human employees work alongside digital counterparts will become
increasingly informational. We develop a generic framework for hypothetical workplaces
to investigate how complexities create to uncertainties. Complexity may be explained
through the Level of Abstractions used to model a system, and it is encountered
in its dynamic form as an alteration of information flow between agents in a phenomenological
relationship. Analyzing these systems as ‘information flows’ brings to light the
uncertainity(ies) the workers of the future will have to cope with. We develop
first concepts that can be used to develop heuristics to manage these uncertainties
in complex manufacturing environments. These heuristics may also be useful in
creating optimized workplaces that combine the individual abilities of both humans
and machines. The framework proposed in this paper may be subject for an empirical
validation of these heuristics in the future.

text: Digitalization has a significant impact on our working life and it allows
whole industries to rethink their value chains. This paper examines how digitalization
relates to complexity in work systems with respect to relevant organizational
fields of work organization. 23 semi-structured interviews with experts from science
and economy were conducted and analyzed. Key findings are that digitalization
has far-reaching, interrelated implications for all organizational fields. Moreover,
digitalization-related aspects were identified which have the potential to increase
    complexity in work systems.

text: In modern industrial applications driven by Cyber-physical systems (CPS) it
is a challenging task to model and optimize processes such as machine analysis
and diagnosis. Since the CPS have to act autonomously, a procedure for automated
decision making has to be designed. In our work we concentrate on the design of
a decision procedure by a fuzzy classifier approach. For our application on decision
making in an industrial environment, a fuzzy approach was picked as convenient
classification technique regarding balance between accuracy and computational
time. We present a supervised learning method called FUZZY-ComRef which combines
fuzzy classification and our combinatorial refinement method, called ComRef [1].
Due to the fact that fuzzy classification might behave inaccurately for some datasets,
the aim of our approach is to improve the results provided by the (stand-alone)
fuzzy classification. We show the performance of FUZZY-ComRef evaluated on the
samples from the UCI Repository and on our real-world dataset Motor Drive Diagnosis.
In addition, we discuss the quadratic computational time problem arising from
the combinatorial nature of ComRef. Furthermore, we show based on real-time evaluations
that within parallelisation the proposed FUZZY-ComRef is suitable to many applications
    in CPS.
