text: "The IALE European Landscape Ecology Congress, held every four years, is a
key event for the European landscape ecology community, bringing together researchers,
practitioners, policymakers, students, and stakeholders for knowledge exchange
and collaboration. The 2025 congress in Bratislava was especially significant,
taking place near Piešťany where IALE was founded in 1982, symbolizing the organization’s
evolution from Cold War-era cooperation to a global network. The 2025 meeting
continued this legacy by promoting dialogue and action.\r\nThis editorial examines
the 2025 congress, from IALE’s founding in Piešťany to its current role addressing
environmental and societal crises. We review its historical context, in particular
Eastern European contributions in former Czechoslovakia, and the ongoing influence
of pioneers like Prof. Milan Ružička. We then analyze congress participants and
their contributions using bibliometric analysis to reveal patterns and international
trends. Finally, we reflect on the 2025 issue of Landscape Online, exploring how
its publications align with and expand upon the key discussions and innovations
that defined this year’s European Congress."

text: 'Introduction: In recent decades, there has been a rise in mental illnesses.
Community infrastructures are increasingly acknowledged as important for sustaining
good mental health. Moreover, green spaces are anticipated to offer advantages
for both mental health and social cohesion. However, the mediating pathway between
green space, social cohesion and mental health and especially the proximity and
characteristics of green spaces that trigger these potential effects remain of
interest. Methods: We gathered data from 1365 individuals on self-reported social
cohesion and mental health across four satellite districts in European cities:
Nantes (France), Porto (Portugal), Sofia (Bulgaria), and Hoje-Taastrup (Denmark).
Green space data from OpenStreetMap was manually adjusted using the PRIGSHARE
guidelines. We used the AID-PRIGSHARE tool to generate 7 indicators about green
space characteristics measured in distances from 100-1500 m, every 100 m. This
resulted in 105 different green space variables that we tested in a single mediation
model with structural equation modelling. Results: Accessible greenness (900-1400
m), accessible green spaces (900-1500 m), accessible green space corridors (300-800
m), accessible total green space (300-800), and mix of green space uses (700-1100
    m) were significantly associated with social cohesion and indirectly with mental
health. Green corridors also showed negative indirect and direct associations
with mental health in larger distances. Surrounding greenness and the quantity
of green space uses were not associated with social cohesion nor indirectly with
mental health. We also observed no positive direct associations between any green
space variable in any distance to mental health. Conclusions: Our results suggest
that accessibility, connectivity, mix of use and proximity are key characteristics
that drive the relationship between green spaces, social cohesion and mental health.
This gives further guidance to urban planners and decision-makers on how to design
urban green spaces to foster social cohesion and improve mental health.'

text: In May 1999, about 30 people from Austria, Germany and Switzerland met in
Basel (Switzerland) to found the German Chapter of the International Association
for Landscape Ecology (IALE-D) to bring together Germanspeaking researchers, planners
and other people interested in landscape ecology. Now, twenty-five years later,
we take this milestone as an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of the topics
that have shaped the landscape ecology discourse within the IALE-D community.
In this editorial, we (1) present the history of the IALE-D conferences, (2) reflect
on the topics addressed by the conference contributions and how they have developed,
and (3) offer some initial indications of changes in relevance with regard to
technological advances, thematic foci, transdisciplinarity, sustainability issues,
and cultural dimensions that can be observed over time. Furthermore, we provide
an overview of the articles published in 2024 in Landscape Online, which mainly
reflect two emerging topics, which follow the lines of the thematic development
of the IALE-D conferences, that is, a focus on urban environments as well as on
pressing issues related to global change.

text: "KI.BAU is a project being developed and conducted at the Detmold School of
Design, part of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Ostwestfalen-Lippe.
It focuses on researching the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in architectural
design, modelling, production and management processes, particularly on the communication
between users, processes and the building itself in various development and life-time
phases. Hence the research aims to develop new tools and AI-supported process
chains for the design, production and communication of architecture. This includes
the training and implementing prototypical machine learning algorithms to autonomously
evolve and optimize field-specific processes and workflows.\r\nAs mentioned above,
a critical question KI.BAU explores is how we, as planners, builders and users,
will communicate with architecture in the future, in its phases of creation and
use but also beyond. This also involves, besides virtual interfaces, examining
the physical interaction with a building, its behaviour, responsiveness and adaptation
to certain conditions. \r\nThe primary goal of the research at KI.BAU is to transform
architecture into an intelligent, to some degree self-sustaining, self-reflective
and maybe even evolving ‘ecological system’. This system should be comprehensively
linked with its creators, users, devices, computers, its (biological) environment
and networks. Consequently, a building must be viewed as an organism that communicates,
interacts and adapts to other connected or related organisms and entities.\r\n"

text: The landscape ecology community witnessed a landmark event in July 2023 as
the 11th International Association for Landscape Ecology (IALE) World Congress
unfolded on the African continent for the first time. This editorial commemorates
this historic occasion, tracing the journey from the inception of Africa-IALE
initiatives in 2002 to the culmination of the World Congress held in Nairobi,
Kenya, almost two decades later. Having previously graced Europe, Northern America,
Australia, and Asia, the IALE World Congress embraced Africa, showcasing the global
reach and inclusive spirit of landscape ecology. This editorial explores the evolution
of Africa-IALE, highlighting the initiatives and the persistent efforts that led
to the World Congress in Africa. We firstly delve into the socio-cultural and
international significance of this shift, emphasising the unique perspectives
and challenges faced by the African landscape ecology community. Secondly, we
assess the participants involved in the 11th World IALE Congress, the topics discussed,
current trends, and priorities within the global landscape ecology research community.
To do so, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of the conference proceedings.
Lastly, we reflect on the impacts of this Congress. Our retrospective perspective
offers a comprehensive view of the symbiotic relationships among the international
landscape ecology community and how landscape ecology has evolved in parallel
with emerging challenges and emerging centres of knowledge and leadership.
