text: The COST-Action (CA 18137) on Middle Class Mass Housing in Europe (MCMH-EU)
has established a transnational scientific network to document the productions
of middle-class mass housing built in Europe since the 1950s in order to investigate
this specific topic and share knowledge. Considering that middle-class mass housing
dominates most of our cities, the research translates into the study of the extensive
development of cities in Europe after World War II. The breadth of the theme and
the differences between the countries make it difficult to construct a systematic
and unified criticism of middle-class mass housing, albeit concentrating on the
post-war period. The COST-Action has the goal to build a network to gather research
representing the pooled knowledge and experiences from the network of multidisciplinary
researchers. So, transversally throughout the Working Groups, an inventory of
case studies, a collection of articles, and studies on the policies were produced.
This paper elaborates on the collected and produced material and data in order
to trigger comparisons and reflections on the approaches and methodologies to
face the complexity of middle-class mass housing topic. The comparison was built
by using different methods intersecting multiple points of view and following
specific thematic tracks that seek to deconstruct the complexity of the middle-class
mass housing topic into singular aspects. This paper presents the results of data
analyses, visualisation techniques and comparative studies to identify massification
processes, morphological structures, demographic and policy developments. It shows
a combination of several methods to build a cross-sectional and systematic approach
to the diverse knowledge envisioned to develop a methodology for future research.
This can be especially useful for future developments and insights towards joint
or individual European guidelines, laws and policies to improve the dilapidated
housing stock, current housing situation and to compete the housing crisis in
    general.

text: The article examines the existing infrastructure of open common spaces within
two New Belgrade mass housing blocks (Blocks 23 and 70a) through a typo-morphological
analysis. These spaces between the buildings, although the most neglected, underused,
and deteriorated components of mass housing neighbourhoods, are at the same time
crucial to the quality, vitality and integrated governance of these neighbourhoods.
They represent the primary tangible commons in cities and neighbourhoods. The
question of urban commons is increasingly present in scientific literature, urban
and architectural discourse. Nevertheless, approaches exploring the spatiality
of the urban commons are scarce, leading to insufficient understanding of the
spatial aspect and potentials of the already existing commons. Therefore, this
study includes (1) identification, typological decoding and classification of
the common spaces, focusing on the case of New Belgrade blocks, followed by (2)
analysis of the spatial patterns and integration of the identified spaces within
the blocks. The study confirms the complexity and diverse typology of the common
spaces. It finds that the in-between, common spaces contribute to higher integration
of different segments of the blocks. The open common spaces have an essential
role in humanisation of the blocks, and thus the quality of life in the blocks
as integrated neighbourhoods. The findings indicate that the spatial setting of
the open common spaces in New Belgrade blocks allows for (re)emergence of collective
practices, leading to inclusive and integrated rehabilitation of the neighbourhoods.

text: The article presents the potentials and capacities of extracurricular activities
such as student workshops for strengthening existing curricula and introducing
emerging specialised areas, topics, and challenges into architectural higher education.
The specific objective of this study is to enhance and test different pedagogical
models for learning on the sustainable rehabilitation of mass housing neighbourhoods
(MHN), as a specific type of modern heritage, through innovative extracurricular
teaching practices based on interdisciplinarity, flexibility, and adaptability.
This research presents three student workshops focusing on the rehabilitation
of mass housing neighbourhoods (MHN), involving students, academics, and professionals
from the field, organised in Germany, Serbia, and North Macedonia in 2022. Moreover,
it engages a comparative analysis of the learning formats and approaches developed
within this discipline-specific cross-border collaboration. The study provides
    (1) an insight into the comparative analysis of learning capabilities and (2)
the formulation of workshop models supported by diagramming of the workshop structure.
The conclusion of the article summarises the findings and highlights the essential
aspects for engaging student workshops, as an instrument for generating operational
knowledge in the field of mass housing rehabilitation.

text: Mass housing neighbourhoods (MHN) represent the leading pattern of urban transformation
and expansion in the second half of the 20th century, and accordingly evaluation,
regeneration and redesign of the MHN represent a necessary and challenging task
in the contemporary research context. In the practical scope of MHN rehabilitation,
various holistic approaches and design strategies are identified that affirm both
ecological transition and social transformation of these urban settings. However,
the level of application of such approaches across Europe varies greatly, and
requires research initiatives of a comparative nature that open a cross-geographical
debate at the European level. Although there is a series of evidence-based studies
that define the conceptual framework of MHN, i.e., large-scale housing settlements,
through historical-interpretative and chronological analyses, the academic debate
on practical and feasible MHN rehabilitation and their sustainable integration
into the urban development of cities at European level is underdeveloped. The
specific objective of this paper is to establish preliminary insights into the
current level of MHN rehabilitation and to identify challenges for further actions
through (1) a comparative analysis of MHN role models from the second half of
20th century, and through (2) insights from an implemented expert questionnaire.
The research engages a comparative case study analysis as the primary method and
analyses MHN in Germany (as a representative of Western Europe) and in the two
ex-Yugoslav countries, North Macedonia and Serbia (as representatives of Eastern
Europe). This research has highlighted the main obstacles and challenges for MHN
rehabilitation and demonstrated the importance of a multiscale approach to MHN
analysis, having in mind that through the distribution of design values at the
analysed spatial levels (neighbourhood level, building level, and apartment level)
the application of affirmative indicators within different design values group
    is recognised.

text: The paper introduces a participatory method for re-generation of the common
spaces in residential neighbourhoods, especially in case of post-war mass housing.
The method combines regenerative design and co-commitment that are recognized
as decisive factors in mass housing revitalisation. The spatial focus of the research
is on New Belgrade Blocks (Serbia) that are part of the larger phenomenon of the
post-socialist urban heritage. The neighbourhoods that are part of this larger
framework are having common attributes and facing similar issues nowadays. Comprehending
and managing change in these neighbourhoods requires community-driven actions
that would include all relevant stakeholders in the process through co-commitment.
The actions, that would be based on regenerative and biophilic design, would ensure
both maintenance of green spaces of the neighbourhoods, as well as integration
of new nature-based solutions. The approach is enhancing the role of community
and highlighting the important values of common spaces in ensuring vitality of
mass housing and co-creating healthy and liveable environments. The paper is contributing
to contemporary discussions on resilient cities and communities and promoting
    participatory and integrated urban renewal.

text: "Properly handled fish is usually marketed as “fresh fish” until day 10 after
fishing. About 40% of the total fishery that is used for direct human consumption
is marketed in fresh form stored at temperatures up to +2 °C. Currently, there
are no validated methods available for controlling the recommended period of storage.
Apart from being a potential source for food fraud, spoiled fish represents a
major source of foodborne illnesses and intoxications.\r\nIn this study, a rapid
MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry based screening method was developed using the vitreous
fluid of fish eyes as specimen for the examination of different days of storage.
The vitreous fluid was collected from n = 100 freshly fished brown trouts at day
    0, 3, 7, 9, and 11 post mortem (n = 20 brown trouts each day of examination).
The samples were immediately measured by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry in linear
positive mode (mass range m/z 2000–20,000 Da). For quality assurance the experiment
was repeated with a set of brown trouts (n = 100) originating from the same fish
farm and with brown trouts (n = 100) originating from a different fish farm. For
specificity testing rainbow trouts (n = 10) were examined accordingly. All obtained
mass spectra were processed by means of MALDI Biotyper OC 3.1 and ClinProTools
3.0 software.\r\nThe MALDI Biotyper approach showed limited applicability for
the identification of the time of storage. However, it was suitable to reliably
discriminate between the closely related species brown and rainbow trout. Processing
by ClinProTools revealed four crucial mass peaks (m/z 2594 Da, m/z 4857 Da, m/z
4879 Da, m/z 4899 Da) which enabled a reliable differentiation between day 0 and
3, 7, 9, 11 (rate of correct identification > 90%) as well as the differentiation
between day 3 and 7, 9, 11 (rate of correct identification > 72%). However, this
approach showed limited applicability within the end of the tested period of storage
when comparing between day 7, 9, or 11."

text: "The consumption of edible insects (entomophagy) will gain greater significance
facing the increasing global population, which is suggested to reach 9 billion
people in 2050 (FAO., 2009). Due to their high amount of proteins, fatty acids,
vitamins, and minerals insects represent a valuable source of essential nutrients.\r\nWhile
the consumption of insects is very common in many countries of Africa and Asia,
there is a far smaller acceptance for entomophagy in Western cultures. Though,
products such as noodles or burger paddies made from insect meal have a better
compliance and can already be purchased in some countries of the European Union.
This processing step however involves the risk of adulteration, because there
is no more possibility to authenticate the insects once they are ground.\r\nThe
aim of this study was to investigate whether edible insects could be measured
and distinguished by MALDI-TOF MS (matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time
of flight mass spectrometry). Therefore, different kinds of edible insects (buffalo
worms, mealworms, crickets and grasshoppers) were purchased via online shops and
ground subsequently. The insect powder was extracted by vigorously shaking in
diluted formic acid and measured by MALDI-TOF MS. The measurement provided reproducible
as well as specific mass spectra and enabled a precise differentiation of the
    different species."

text: 'Stachybotrys (S.) spp. are omnipresent cellulolytic molds. Some species are
highly toxic owing to their ability to synthesize various secondary metabolites
such as macrocyclic trichothecenes or hemolysins. The reliable identification
of Stachybotrys at species level is currently limited to genome-based identification.
This study aimed to establish a fast and reliable MALDI-TOF MS identification
method by optimizing the pre-analytical steps for protein extraction for subsequent
generation of high-quality fingerprint mass spectra. Eight reference strains of
the American Type Culture Collection and the Technical University of Denmark were
cultivated in triplicate (biological repetitions) for 2 days in malt extract broth.
The mycelia (1.5 ml) were first washed with 75 % ethanol and an additional washing
step with dimethyl sulfoxide (10 %) was added to remove unspecific low weight
masses. Furthermore, mycelia were broken with roughened glass beads in formic
acid (70 %) and acetonitrile. The method was successfully applied to a total of
45 isolates of Stachybotrys originating from three different habitats (indoor,
feed, and food samples; n = 15 each): Twenty-seven isolates of S. chartarum and
18 isolates of S. chlorohalonata could be identified by MALDI-TOF MS. The data
obtained exactly matched those obtained by genome-based identification. The mean
score values for S. chartarum ranged from 2.509 to 2.739 and from 2.148 to 2.622
for S. chlorohalonata with a very good reproducibility: the relative standard
deviations were between 0.3 % and 6.8 %. Thus, MALDI-TOF MS proved to be a fast
and reliable alternative to identification of Stachybotrys spp. by nucleotide
    amplification and sequencing.'

text: Sensor and information fusion is recently a major topic which becomes important
in machine diagnosis and conditioning for complex production machines and process
engineering. It is a known fact that distributed automation systems have a major
impact on signal processing and pattern recognition for machine diagnosis. Therefore,
it is necessary to research and develop smart diagnosis methods which are applicable
for distributed systems like resource-limited cyber-physical systems. In this
paper we propose an new approach for sensor and information fusion based on Evidence
Theory and socio-psychological decision-making. We show that context based condition
monitoring is instantiated even in conflict situations, oc-curing in real life
scenarios permanently. A simple but effective importance measure is proposed which
controls the significance of conditioning propositions in a system.

text: In this paper we propose a novel, extended perspective on evidential aggregation
rules in machine condition monitoring. First, aspects regarding the interconnections
between Dempster-Shafer, Fuzzy Set, and Possibility Theory are shown. Subsequently,
a novel approach for direct determination of basic probability assignments using
Fuzzy membership functions is proposed. Finally, it is applied to a pipe extrusion
line's condition monitoring system, considering and reducing pairwise conflicts.

text: In this paper, we sketch an idea for the integration of singleclass support
vector machines (SVM) into fuzzy class learning. As result,we obtain robust and transparent rule-based fuzzy classification models
suitable for online-classification tasks. In particular, the singleclass SVM is
employed to extend the applicability of convex fuzzy classifica-tion models to
nonconvex datainherent structures. The key point of thisextension is the preservation of the interpretability for both, the classlearning
and the classification process. The feasibility of the approach isdemonstrated
in the context of a banknote authentication application.

text: The present work aims at a statistically motivated parameterisation for a
fuzzy classification approach. Its key points are the determination of robust
parameterisations for the data-driven fuzzy class learning based an statistical
analyses as well as the preservation of the interpretability of the fuzzy class
models and the classification process. In particular, order statistics and Monte
Carlo methods are used to determine distributions and moments of class border
parameters. These distributions and moments are further applied to evaluate the
robustness of parameters of the current fuzzy classification model and to propose
alternative robust parameterisations. The feasibility of the approach is demonstrated
in the context of a machine diagnosis application.

text: Many of the existing fusion approaches based on Dempster-Shafer Theory (DST)
tend to be unreliable in various scenarios. Therefore, this topic is still in
discussion. In this work a Two-Layer Conflict Solving (TLCS) data fusion scheme
is proposed which is based on Dempster-Shafer Theory and on Fuzzy-Pattern-Classification
(FPC) concepts. The aim is to provide an approach to data fusion which provides
a stable conflict scenario handling. Furthermore, the scheme can easily be extended
to fuzzy classification and is applicable to sensor fusion applications. Therefore,
the suggested approach will contribute as a novel fuzzy fusion method.

text: It is likely in real-world applications that only little data isavailable
for training a knowledge-based system. We present a method forautomatically training
    the knowledge-representing membership functionsof a Fuzzy-Pattern-Classification
system that works also when only littledata is available and the universal set
is described insufficiently. Actually, this paper presents how the Modified-Fuzzy-Pattern-Classifier’s
member-ship functions are trained using probability distribution functions.

text: In this paper, a fuzzy pattern classification tuning approach is proposed,
which is based on fusion concept. In this method, tuning parameters are learned
in a training procedure, enabling system to be capable of managing individual
classification task. Fuzzy c-means, as a specific instance of Tuning Reference,
is employed as a tool to offer membership function which is used for making decisions
and its membership function fuses (tunes) another membership function captured
from fuzzy pattern classification and then final decisions are made upon fused
one. Experiments are taken on five benchmark datasets, one of them shows an equal
performance and the other four present better results than each single classifier.

text: Nonlinear spatial transforms and fuzzy pattern classification with unimodal
potential functions are established in signal processing. They have proved to
be excellent tools in feature extraction and classification. In this paper we
present a hardware accelerated image processing and classification scheme for
rotation and translation tolerant two-dimensional pattern recognition, which is
based on one-dimensional nonlinear discrete circular transforms. However, the
scheme is simple; it is stable and therefore well suited for industrial applications.
An implementation on one field programmable gate array (FPGA) is proposed.

text: Nonlinear spatial transforms and fuzzy pattern classification with unimodal
potential functions are established in signal processing. They have proved to
be excellent tools in feature extraction and classification. In this paper, we
will present a hardware-accelerated image processing and classification system
which is implemented on one field-programmable gate array (FPGA). Nonlinear discrete
circular transforms generate a feature vector. The features are analyzed by a
fuzzy classifier. This principle can be used for feature extraction, pattern recognition,
and classification tasks. Implementation in radix-2 structures is possible, allowing
fast calculations with a computational complexity of up to. Furthermore, the pattern
separability properties of these transforms are better than those achieved with
the well-known method based on the power spectrum of the Fourier Transform, or
on several other transforms. Using different signal flow structures, the transforms
can be adapted to different image and signal processing applications.

In
der Anwendung der Druckbildinspektion erweist sich das Mustererkennungssystem
    als praxisgerecht einsetzbar.

text: ' Image retrieval, texture analysis, optical character recognition and
general inspection tasks are of main interest in the field of image processing
and pattern recognition. Methods which operate automatically are of interest in
the above mentioned areas. Therefore, translation invariant transforms are helpful
tools for pattern recognition tasks. Nonlinear spatial transforms and fuzzy pattern
classification with unimodal potential functions are established in signal processing.
They have proved to be excellent tools in feature extraction and classification.
In this thesis nonlinear discrete transforms, which are adaptable for different
application tasks, will be presented. The adaptivity includes the group specific
behaviour, the amount of calculations and the implementability in application
specific integrated circuits. The pattern separability properties of these transforms
are better compared to that of the well known power spectrum of the Fourier transform
and several other known transforms. Furthermore, a hardware accelerator image
processing and classification system will presented, which is implemented on one
field programmable gate array (FPGA). The system can be used for feature extraction,
pattern recognition and classification tasks. In the field of printed image inspection
the system is applicable under practical aspects.'
