--- _id: '12673' abstract: - lang: eng text: Many African countries are home to extraordinary architecture that is virtually unknown. There are interpretations of Art Deco, International Style, Brutalism as well as of African vernacular architecture. Climate-responsive buildings with a fluidity of interior and exterior spaces play a large role. While many of these 20th century architects were of European origin, they were deeply influenced by their surroundings and found original, site-specific expressions, often in collaboration with African architects. A focus of the construction activities were educational buildings which played an important role for these young nations that mostly gained their independence in the 1960s. However, the shift from combustion engines to e-mobility drive trains is restructuring the industry. Accordingly, this paper analyzes the determinants affecting the emergence of e-mobility drive technologies in the automotive sector. In doing so, we emphasize the role of digital technologies in the sector’s environmental transformation, drawing from the “twin-transition” framework, where digital and green shifts mutually influence one another. Methodically, we use an event-history approach to empirically explore the early appearance of R&D activities in the form of patent-based or funded-project-based collaboration events at the regional level over the period 1990 to 2018. Our results indicate positive and significant relatedness between various digitalization variables and the early emergence of e-mobility activities in regions. Now, twenty-five years later, we take this milestone as an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of the topics that have shaped the landscape ecology discourse within the IALE-D community. In this editorial, we (1) present the history of the IALE-D conferences, (2) reflect on the topics addressed by the conference contributions and how they have developed, and (3) offer some initial indications of changes in relevance with regard to technological advances, thematic foci, transdisciplinarity, sustainability issues, and cultural dimensions that can be observed over time.
