To identify potential areas for NWRM, this study applied and methodologically expanded an existing approach for identifying dominant runoff processes (DRPs) to an agricultural sub-catchment in the Weserbergland region of Germany. The DRP were determined using a Geographic Information System (GIS) and validated through field surveys. Potential areas for water retention within the same runoff process classes were identified for three defined objectives: improving infiltration, extending flow paths, and redirecting runoff to surrounding areas. Spatial differentiation was achieved using accumulated catchment area and overland flow distance. The watershed is predominantly characterized by surface runoff (Hortonian Overland Flow). Field validation confirmed the DRP classification for around two-thirds of the study area, with deviations occurring predominantly on arable land. Supplementing the DRP approach with a topographic analysis allowed for further differentiation, focusing on small, topographically defined sub-watersheds. The identified areas offer significant potential for interventions. Combined with supplementary data, analyses of the water network and the involvement of local stakeholders, the resulting potential map provides a solid basis for planning smaller-scale water retention measures.
","lang":"eng"}],"year":"2026","article_number":"195","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"publication":"Hydrology","department":[{"_id":"DEP8000"},{"_id":"DEP8018"}],"issue":"7","volume":13,"author":[{"full_name":"Pilar von Pilchau, Katharina","last_name":"Pilar von Pilchau","first_name":"Katharina","id":"85294"},{"first_name":"Christoph","full_name":"Mudersbach, Christoph","last_name":"Mudersbach"},{"last_name":"Nehren","full_name":"Nehren, Udo","first_name":"Udo"},{"first_name":"Klaus","id":"11145","full_name":"Maas, Klaus","last_name":"Maas"}],"_id":"14059","status":"public","keyword":["climate adaptation","dominant runoff process","geographic information systems (GIS)","natural water retention measures (NWRMs)","spatial prioritization","decision support"],"publication_status":"published","citation":{"mla":"Pilar von Pilchau, Katharina, et al. “Prioritizing Small-Scale Water Retention Measures Through Spatial Differentiation of Dominant Runoff Processes.” Hydrology, vol. 13, no. 7, 195, 2026, https://doi.org/10.3390/hydrology13070195.","ufg":"Pilar von Pilchau, Katharina u. a.: Prioritizing Small-Scale Water Retention Measures Through Spatial Differentiation of Dominant Runoff Processes, in: Hydrology 13 (2026), H. 7.","ieee":"K. Prerequisites for data reuse are its quality, availability and identical meaning of data. In diverse projects, research data warehouses serve as core components between heterogeneous clinical databases and various research applications. Given the complexity (high number of data elements) and dynamics (regular updates) of electronic health record (EHR) data structures, we propose a clinical metadata warehouse (CMDW) based on a metadata registry standard. Metadata of two large hospitals were automatically inserted into two CMDWs containing 16,230 forms and 310,519 data elements. Automatic updates of metadata are possible as well as semantic annotations. A CMDW allows metadata discovery, data quality assessment and similarity analyses. Common data models for distributed research networks can be established based on similarity analyses."}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0926-9630"],"eissn":["1879-8365"]},"date_updated":"2024-07-18T13:42:49Z","external_id":{"pmid":["29295106"]},"date_created":"2024-06-24T07:36:24Z","user_id":"83781","type":"journal_article","title":"What Information Does Your EHR Contain?
