As the significance of architectural heritage continues to be recognized globally, there is an increasing shift towards integrating digital solutions to ensure its preservation and management. This paper explores the evolution and application of digital technologies such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and advanced imaging techniques within the field. It highlights how these technologies have facilitated the non-destructive evaluation of heritage sites and enhanced accessibility and interaction through virtual and augmented reality applications. By synthesizing data from various case studies and scholarly articles, the review identifies current trends and the expanding scope of digital interventions in heritage conservation. It discusses the interplay between traditional conservation approaches and modern technological solutions, providing insights into their complementary roles. The analysis also addresses the challenges and limitations encountered in the digital preservation of architectural heritage, such as data integration, the compatibility of different technologies, and the need for more comprehensive frameworks to guide the implementation of digital tools in heritage conservation practices. Ultimately, this review underscores the transformative impact of digital technology in managing architectural heritage risks, suggesting directions for future research and the potential for innovative applications in the field.","lang":"eng"}],"date_created":"2025-03-09T17:40:16Z","author":[{"full_name":"Yu, Yingwen","first_name":"Yingwen","last_name":"Yu"},{"last_name":"Raed","full_name":"Raed, Abeer Abu","first_name":"Abeer Abu"},{"first_name":"Yuyang","full_name":"Peng, Yuyang","last_name":"Peng"},{"last_name":"Pottgiesser","id":"27166","orcid":"0000-0002-8594-3168","full_name":"Pottgiesser, Uta","first_name":"Uta"},{"first_name":"Edward","full_name":"Verbree, Edward","last_name":"Verbree"},{"last_name":"van Oosterom","first_name":"Peter","full_name":"van Oosterom, Peter"}],"volume":13,"publication_status":"published","keyword":["Heritage & Architecture","Landscape Architecture","Digital Technologies"],"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://www.nature.com/articles/s40494-025-01558-5","open_access":"1"}],"year":"2025","quality_controlled":"1","language":[{"iso":"eng"}]},{"abstract":[{"text":"Green infrastructure is a novel approach to landscape planning. Now, twenty-five years later, we take this milestone as an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of the topics that have shaped the landscape ecology discourse within the IALE-D community. In this editorial, we (1) present the history of the IALE-D conferences, (2) reflect on the topics addressed by the conference contributions and how they have developed, and (3) offer some initial indications of changes in relevance with regard to technological advances, thematic foci, transdisciplinarity, sustainability issues, and cultural dimensions that can be observed over time. Furthermore, we provide an overview of the articles published in 2024 in Landscape Online, which mainly reflect two emerging topics, which follow the lines of the thematic development of the IALE-D conferences, that is, a focus on urban environments as well as on pressing issues related to global change.","lang":"eng"}],"citation":{"van":"Rolf W, Schirpke U. This editorial commemorates this historic occasion, tracing the journey from the inception of Africa-IALE initiatives in 2002 to the culmination of the World Congress held in Nairobi, Kenya, almost two decades later. Having previously graced Europe, Northern America, Australia, and Asia, the IALE World Congress embraced Africa, showcasing the global reach and inclusive spirit of landscape ecology. This editorial explores the evolution of Africa-IALE, highlighting the initiatives and the persistent efforts that led to the World Congress in Africa. We firstly delve into the socio-cultural and international significance of this shift, emphasising the unique perspectives and challenges faced by the African landscape ecology community. Secondly, we assess the participants involved in the 11th World IALE Congress, the topics discussed, current trends, and priorities within the global landscape ecology research community. To do so, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of the conference proceedings. Lastly, we reflect on the impacts of this Congress. Our retrospective perspective offers a comprehensive view of the symbiotic relationships among the international landscape ecology community and how landscape ecology has evolved in parallel with emerging challenges and emerging centres of knowledge and leadership.","lang":"eng"}],"publication_identifier":{"eissn":["1865-1542"]},"extern":"1","date_updated":"2025-05-12T08:45:06Z","publication":"Landscape Online","publisher":"IALE-D"},{"publication":"Journal of Digital Landscape Architecture","date_updated":"2024-12-04T14:40:56Z","publisher":"Wichmann Verlag","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"This paper aims to demonstrate and discuss how social media data may serve to elucidate and determine landscape scenic values for planning purposes. The project proposes a mixed-use transformation that reinterprets the building as a “city within the city,” inspired by Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation in Marseille. The existing structure is strategically reduced to its essential load-bearing concrete frame and floor slabs, preserving the structural skeleton while enabling radical spatial reconfiguration.\r\nPrefabricated timber modules are inserted and cantilevered between the reinforced-concrete columns, extending the usable floor area and introducing a warm, contemporary material contrast to the original façade. This intervention not only increases density and flexibility but also redefines the tower’s appearance, giving it a cosmopolitan and forward-looking architectural identity. The ground floor is conceived as an open and publicly accessible urban platform, activating the surrounding plaza and strengthening social interaction. Upper floors are redesigned as affordable and attractive living spaces for young residents, encouraging a diverse and vibrant community within the building.\r\nA newly designed park-like rooftop landscape provides recreational space and panoramic views over the city, enhancing environmental quality and urban connectivity. By combining structural preservation, modular timber construction, public programming, and residential reuse, the proposal demonstrates how high-rise retrofitting can generate social, ecological, and economic value simultaneously. The project positions adaptive reuse as a viable strategy for sustainable urban regeneration and architectural longevity."}],"extern":"1"}]
