text: Additive manufacturing (AM) paves the way for low-cost production of optical
and terahertz (THz) components such as waveguides, fibers, and lenses [1]–[3].
This work addresses the fabrication and THz characterization of a 3D-printed waveguide
composed of cyclic olefin copolymer (TOPAS). Such a waveguide is a convenient
and inexpensive tool in the development of THz interconnects, and in applications
    such as biomedical sensing.

text: A human digital twin (HDT) is a virtual representation of a worker in cyberspace.
Nevertheless, current research focusses mainly on HDTs for motoric work types,
such as assembly. To fully integrate an HDT for workers in production, it is necessary
that an HDT also displays cognitive processes like memorizing, thinking or reasoning.
Such a concept can be used in information-based work, for example monitoring highly
automated production systems, and contribute to the planning and control of production.
Due to the high proportion of planning and decision-making processes, the efficiency
of information-based work is determined in particular by the inner processes of
the worker. An HDT can therefore help to describe current and future states of
socio-technical work systems. Therefore, this paper presents a systematic literature
review to explicitly derive the relevant components of an HDT for information-based
work types. The elements of such an HDT and its environment are defined. Further,
the current gaps in literature are identified. There are currently no real-world
applications of such an HDT. Additionally, the value of multi-HDT systems must
    be evaluated more extensively.

text: Including disabled workers in value-creating work processes is a fundamental
and guaranteed human right and is, therefore, an essential goal of society. In
Germany, sheltered workshops create the conditions for this inclusion since they
are essential to companies' value chains. A central challenge is the inclusion
of disabled workers in the value-creation processes, such as in manufacturing
or assembly areas. The skills of disabled workers vary since they have individual
impairments. Therefore, this paper presents a digital human model, a Human Digital
Twin (HDT), for disabled workers. The model maps their skills and supports the
production planning and assembly processes. (C) 2024 The Authors. Published by

text: Cyber-physical production systems have emerged with the rise of Industry 4.0
in different industrial fields. Especially the food sector, where inhomogeneous
input products like beer/yeast suspensions with different qualities and properties
have yet slowed down automation, has potential for this evolution. This contribution
presents optimization methods for a dynamical cross-flow filtration plant which
is driven by an advanced control concept in combination with data driven product
monitoring via inline near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) in order to improve energy
savings and filtration performance. Using a hierarchical control and optimization
structure, the non stationary batch process is steered towards a high production
rate with low energy consumption for a variety of different input products.

text: Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) play an essential role in today’s production
processes, leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance operations such
as optimization, anomaly detection, and predictive maintenance. This article reviews
a cognitive architecture for Artificial Intelligence, which has been developed
to establish a standard framework for integrating AI solutions into existing production
processes. Given that machines in these processes continuously generate large
streams of data, Online Machine Learning (OML) is identified as a crucial extension
to the existing architecture. To substantiate this claim, real-world experiments
using a slitting machine are conducted, to compare the performance of OML to traditional
Batch Machine Learning. The assessment of contemporary OML algorithms using a
real production system is a fundamental innovation in this research. The evaluations
clearly indicate that OML adds significant value to CPS, and it is strongly recommended
as an extension of related architectures, such as the cognitive architecture for
AI discussed in this article. Additionally, surrogate-model-based optimization
is employed, to determine the optimal hyperparameter settings for the corresponding
OML algorithms, aiming to achieve peak performance in their respective tasks.

text: The aim of the study is to provide an up-to date overall evaluation of visual
contamination occurring on the slaughter line in order to provide a basis for
implementing contamination control measures and to the hygienic quality of the
processes. For this purpose, 627 contaminated pig carcasses in an industrial slaughterhouse
in north western Germany were examined in 2021 for its distribution of type, areal
extent and localization of slaughter contamination. Prior to official meat inspection,
two persons visually scanned dorsal and ventral surfaces of the eviscerated but
not yet split pig carcasses from cranial to caudal and recorded types, areal extent
and localization of the contamination. The main contamination type were intestinal
contents, bile, stomach contents, tubular rail fat and “others”, which mostly
consisted of a reddish foam from the respiratory tract. 103 out of 627 contaminated
animals showed more than one contamination, which leads to a total number of 754
contaminations detected. Intestinal contents accounted for almost half of all
contaminations and “others” for 30%. Forelimb, back and ham together counted for
70% of the contaminated regions. The affected area was smaller than that of a
one euro coin (diameter about 23 mm) in 86% of the cases.

text: "Purpose: Industry 4.0 technologies influence how production is planned, scheduled,
and controlled. In literature, different classifications of the tasks and functions
of production planning and control (PPC) exist, of which one is the German Aachen
PPC model. This research aims to identify and classify current Industry 4.0 approaches
for planning and controlling production processes and to reveal researched and
unexplored areas of the model.\r\n\r\nDesign/methodology/approach: In an exploratory
literature review, we review and classify 48 publications on a full-text basis
with the Aachen PPC model's tasks and functions. Two cluster analyses reveal researched
and unexplored tasks and functions of the Aachen PPC model. Additionally, we give
a summary of each reviewed publication.\r\n\r\nFindings: We propose a cyber-physical
PPC architecture, which incorporates current Industry 4.0 technologies, current
optimization methods, optimization objectives, and disturbances relevant for realizing
a PPC system in a smart factory. Current approaches focus on the in-house PPC,
particularly on the control using real-time information from the shop floor. We
propose future research directions for the unexplored tasks and functions of the
Aachen PPC model.\r\n\r\nResearch limitations/implications: The selection of search
terms and the texts' interpretation is based on an individual assessment. The
revelation of unexplored tasks and functions of the Aachen PPC model might have
a different outcome if the search term combination is parameterized differently.\r\n\r\nOriginality/value:
Using the Aachen PPC model, which holistically models PPC, the findings give comprehensive
insights into the current advances of tools, methods, and challenges relevant
to planning and controlling production processes under Industry 4.0."

text: In Northwestern Europe, Germany, France, the Netherlands, the UK and Belgium
constitute the biggest five potato producers, with total potato crop production
around 60% of EU-28 production before Brexit. Soil and climate conditions are
highly favourable for potato growth in this region. Production is under driving
forces of (i) the potato processing industry, particularly in Belgium; (ii) the
innovation for fresh potato in the UK, France and Germany; (iii) the leadership
of Germany and the Netherlands for starch potato; and (iv) the dominance of the
Netherlands for seed production. Based on an industrial agri-food production system,
the region has the highest potato yield levels worldwide and developed relevant
trade networks for export of seed, fresh and processed potato products in and
outside Europe. Conventional and intensive potato production is widespread over
the region, whilst organic production started to develop in Germany and France.
Whether the coming decades will be as successful as the last ones for sustainable
potato production will depend on how the sector and stakeholders of the whole
potato value-chain will overcome new issues and challenges. These are mainly soil
quality and health conservation, consequences of climate change, increasing bans
on the use of plant protection products, tightening environmental standards, food
waste reduction and increasing trade tensions hampering the flow of potatoes around
the world. After a detailed description of the potato production in the region,
this paper contains a SWOT analysis aiming to identify potential solutions to
overcome environmental, technical, economic, political and societal issues in
the region for sustainable potato production in the coming years and decades.

text: n the last years, Additive Manufacturing, thanks to its capability of continuous
improvements in performance and cost-efficiency, was able to partly replace and
redefine well-established manufacturing processes. This research is based on the
idea to achieve great cost and operational benefits especially in the field of
tool making for injection molding by combining traditional and additive manufacturing
in one process chain. Special attention is given to the surface quality in terms
of surface roughness and its optimization directly in the Selective Laser Melting
process. This article presents the possibility for a remelting process of the
SLM parts as a way to optimize the surfaces of the produced parts. The influence
of laser remelting on the surface roughness of the parts is analyzed while varying
machine parameters like laser power and scan settings. Laser remelting with optimized
parameter settings considerably improves the surface quality of SLM parts and
is a great starting point for further post-processing techniques, which require
a low initial value of surface roughness.

text: Additive Manufacturing has arisen as a ground-breaking set of technologies
that, thanks to their capability of continuous improvements in performance and
cost-efficiency, was able in the last years to replace well-established manufacturing
processes. Proficiency in the fabrication of highly complex parts forced this
astonishing development. This research is based on the idea that through the integration
of additive and conventional manufacturing technologies it is possible to achieve
great cost and operational benefits especially in the field of tool making for
injection molding. Such an integrated manufacturing solution could overcome the
limitations of independent additive, subtractive, and post-processing procedures
by strengthening their potentialities. The present study highlights the opportunities
of a synergy between the above-mentioned manufacturing technologies for the optimized
fabrication of injection molds. An additive manufacturing process chain is presented,
and special attention is given to the surface quality and its optimization directly
in the Selective Laser Melting process. The potentialities of the Laser Surface
Re-melting technique are analyzed, and the process optimization leads to a reduction
of 45% of the average roughness directly in the SLM process. (C) 2019, IFAC (International

text: The genus Stachybotrys produces a broad diversity of secondary metabolites,
including macrocyclic trichothecenes, atranones, and phenylspirodrimanes. Although
the class of the phenylspirodrimanes is the major one and consists of a multitude
of metabolites bearing various structural modifications, few investigations have
been carried out. Thus, the presented study deals with the quantitative determination
of several secondary metabolites produced by distinct Stachybotrys species for
comparison of their metabolite profiles. For that purpose, 15 of the primarily
produced secondary metabolites were isolated from fungal cultures and structurally
characterized in order to be used as analytical standards for the development
of an LC-MS/MS multimethod. The developed method was applied to the analysis of
micro-scale extracts from 5 different Stachybotrys strains, which were cultured
on different media. In that process, spontaneous dialdehyde/lactone isomerization
was observed for some of the isolated secondary metabolites, and novel stachybotrychromenes
were quantitatively investigated for the first time. The metabolite profiles of
Stachybotrys species are considerably influenced by time of growth and substrate
availability, as well as the individual biosynthetic potential of the respective
species. Regarding the reported adverse effects associated with Stachybotrys growth
in building environments, combinatory effects of the investigated secondary metabolites
should be addressed and the role of the phenylspirodrimanes re-evaluated in future
    research.

text: The use of Assistive Technology (AT) plays a significant role in the advancement
of greater independence for individuals with disabilities in their work life.
In particular, digital step-by-step support can enable people to perform production
tasks that were formerly difficult to accomplish. In this paper, we focused on
finding a solution for a specific production process. To this end, we set up a
prototype assistive system for performing a cutting task which provides step-by-step
support for people with disabilities. In an evaluation study with impaired people,
we investigated how our assistive system affects the task efficiency as well as
participants’ subjective evaluation of perceived mental effort and system usability.
Results show advantages for step-by-step support with regard to users’ task efficiency
    and subjective evaluation.

text: Recent research has shown that computer-based Assistive Technology (AT) has
the potential to support individuals with disabilities in production environments.
At the same time, step-by-step instructions enable workers to be successful in
their performance of industrial tasks that were formerly difficult to accomplish.
We merged these two types of intervention and developed an application running
on a mobile device that can assist disabled workers working more independently.
In an evaluation study, we investigated how our assistive system affects the task
efficiency as well as participants’ subjective evaluation. Results show advantages
when using the assistive prototype with regard to users’ task efficiency and subjective
    evaluations.

text: Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies are increasingly used for final part
production. Especially technologies for processing of metal, like Selective LaserMelting
(SLM), arefocusedin this area. The shift from prototyping towards final part
production results in enhanced requirements for repeatability and predictability
of the part quality. Machine manufacturers offer process monitoring solutions
for different aspects of the production process, like the powder bed surface,
the melt pool, and the laser energy. Nevertheless, the significance of these systems
is not fully proven and threshold values for the monitored process parameters
have to be determined for each product individually. This impedes the development
of suitable process control systems. The paper gives an overview ofexistingresearch
approaches and available process monitoring systems for SLM and their applicability
for predicting certain part characteristics. The existing solutions are evaluated
based on own research results. Next, AM specific difficulties for the development
of process control tools and possible solutions are discussed.

text: A paradigm shift in the field of maintenance is essential for companies due
to a progressive digitalization of production processes. Therefore, the new paradigm
considersall phases of a system, from procurement, operation through to the recycling
of the machine. Initially, at the start of the cycle manufacturers of machines
and equipment have to focus on design, implementation and quality assurance in
compliance with the requirements for operation and maintenance to minimize lifecycle
cost. During operation,an efficient strategy for maintaining must be defined.
Based on the introduced paradigm a maintenance check is presented, able to provide
orientation to small and middle-sizedenterprises regarding their maintenance situation
and level. The respective level is described on basis of the degree of maturity.
Regarding further steps, it is the fundament for strategic decisions and activities.

text: Increasingly, production processes are enabled and controlled by Information
Technology (IT), a development being also referred to as “Industry 4.0”. IT thereby
contributes to flexible and adaptive production processes, and in this sense factories
become “smart factories”. In line with this, IT also more and more supports human
workers via various assistance systems. This support aims to both support workers
to better execute their tasks and to reduce the effort and time required when
working. However, due to the large spectrum of assistance systems, it is hard
to acquire an overview and to select an adequate system for a smart factory based
on meaningful criteria. We therefore synthesize a set of comparison criteria into
a consistent framework and demonstrate the application of our framework by classifying
    three examples.

text: A rising number of product variants together with decreasing lot sizes are
a result of the trend of individualization. Besides the upcoming organizational
issues, changes in the production technologies are required. Direct digital manufacturing
contributes to solve this problem by enabling the production of parts right from
the CAD data.Process capability analysis is applied in several industries to prove
the reliable compliance of products with quality requirements. As it is based
on statistical methods, new challenges arise in the context of single-part production. The
paper describes and compares different approaches for the adoption of process
capability analysis for single-part production with special focus on additive
manufacturing technologies. The statistical background and the applicability of
different capability parameters are discussed. An overview of existing research
work is given and supplemented by own approaches for the adoption of statistical
methods for single-part production. The aim of the research work is to establish
a first approach for the qualification of new technologies in single-part production.

text: "In this paper, concepts for an extended DC network for the main power
supply of components from various manufacturers in industrial production are presented.
In the first part, detailed requirements for such a network are given
\ from the viewpoint of a customer. Based on those, different concepts
for AC/DC conversion and energy management are discussed. As far as AC/DC conversion
\ is concerned, the advantages and drawbacks of several rectifier topologies
are listed, as they have a significant impact on the system behavior and
\ EMC properties. \r\nAn intelligent energy management can improve the
\ energy efficiency and reduce downtimes of a plant, which are major
    requirements from a customer’s viewpoint. "

text: Under the circumstance of advanced globalization, it is increasingly difficult
for production companies to remain competitiveness. Many of them are forced to
restrict budget and reduce production costs. In addition, the customization of
product increases continuously. This results in extension of product variation
and reduction of product life cycle. Therefore, the companies need a high flexibility
to respond quickly to changes in the market and to customer requirements. Lean
thinking, as a powerful tool, has been implemented by many companies in production
and manufacturing. In order to avoid waste in lean manufacturing, it is necessary
to manage efficiently the material flow. In this study, for a lean material handling
system in the lean manufacturing of a company, an in-plant milk-run distribution
system is taken into consideration. The system consistsof vehicles, which move
periodically in certain routes. The materials are delivered in short intervals
from a central storage area to several points of use in the production. By using
milk-run in plant, the material handling processes can be standardized and therefore
the waste can be eliminated. One additional aim of the study with milk-run distribution
for the material provision is to minimize the handling time, which determines
directly the personal costs. In order to realize the aim, the work has beendivided
into several steps. At first, the production processes, especially the material
provision for the production have been analyzed. Secondly, the technological solutions
have been analyzed in order to handle different loading units required by different
machines in the production. Thirdly, the milk-run distribution for lean production
is formulated as an optimization problem with the object of minimizing the number
of vehicles and the distance traveled under the constraints of specific time periods,
capacity of vehicle and related stations etc. Fourthly, two optimization methods
are developed in order to find the optimal solution for the milk-run problem and
the performance of different methods is also compared.

text: "The trend of increasing technological complexity of machines mainly correlates
with the integration of additional functions in machines. Increasing functionality
\ of the machines leads to an increased number of control \r\nelements,
which limits the clarity of the machine operation and leads to higher cognitive
demands in the machine operation. Due to the growing functional range of production
machines the demand of usability for the operating systems continues to
\ grow. The selection and design of icons for the identification of controls
\ contributes significantly to usability, especially for intuitive operation
of production machines. \r\nThe aim of this study is to investigate the
\ intuitive usability of production machines, to consider its use of graphical
\ elements (icons) and to derive recommendations for a demand-oriented
\ selection and design of icons. To achieve this goal, laboratory studies
at five modern production machines (laser sintering machine, CNC universal
\ lathe, plastic injection molding machine, laser processing machine, woodworking
\ machine) - each with different operating concept - were performed. The results
\ of the study show that the used symbols in the examined machines are
\ only limited self-explanatory and intuitive, and thus have significant
deficits for easy and intuitive operation. Especially the combination of screens
and electronic keys or switches was often criticized and leads to uncertainty
in the operation. As a result, recommendations for the design of icons on production
    machines are given. "

text: The term Industrie 4.0 carries the vision of smart factories, which automatically
adapt to changes and assist the human as much as possible during operation and
maintenance. This includes smart human machine interfaces, which reduce the chances
of errors and help to make the right decisions. This paper presents an approach
to equip the maintenance software running on a tablet PC with augmented reality
functionality to be able to place virtual sticky notes at production modules.
Additionally, these sticky notes are enriched with position information. The central
element of this approach is an ontology-based context-aware framework, which aggregates
and processes data from different sources. As a result, a tablet PC application
was implemented, which allows displaying maintenance information as well as live
plant process data in the form of augmented reality. More than 100 of those sticky
notes can be placed using this system, whereas each note requires a file size
of 12 to 16 kilo bytes. After placing a sticky note, the system recognizes it
even if the camera's position is not exactly the same as during the placing process.

text: "This paper is aimed to discuss current research using data mining techniques
and industry statistics in production environments. The general research approach
is based on the idea of using data mining processes and techniques of industry
statistics to find rare and hidden patterns behind failures of complex components.
A case study will be applied to illustrate how the technique is carried out and
where the limits of this approach occur. The case study deals with a component
supplier of printing machines, which received an increasing number of client complaints,
all related to one distinct problem. The observed failures seem to occur only
among clients with very high quality standards. The affected component undergoes
a very complex production process with several steps in different departments.
Every single production unit records data information from multiple process variables
and at different points in time. In the beginning there was no understanding of
the failure causes in production at all. Therefore a huge amount of production
data had to be analyzed to find the pattern that discloses the failure.\r\nThe
data mining process starts with a first step in which the given data sets are
prepared and then cleaned. Followed up by building a prediction model. The aim
is to detect the root causes for failures and to predict potential failures in
affected components. This paper shows how to use data mining to get the answer
    on pressing production failures.\r\n"

text: Sensor and information fusion is recently a major topic which becomes important
in machine diagnosis and conditioning for complex production machines and process
engineering. It is a known fact that distributed automation systems have a major
impact on signal processing and pattern recognition for machine diagnosis. Therefore,
it is necessary to research and develop smart diagnosis methods which are applicable
for distributed systems like resource-limited cyber-physical systems. In this
paper we propose an new approach for sensor and information fusion based on Evidence
Theory and socio-psychological decision-making. We show that context based condition
monitoring is instantiated even in conflict situations, oc-curing in real life
scenarios permanently. A simple but effective importance measure is proposed which
controls the significance of conditioning propositions in a system.

text: For the production of biopharmaceuticals a seed train is required to generate
an adequate number of cells for inoculation of the production bioreactor. This
seed train is time- and cost-intensive but offers potential for optimization.
A method and a protocol are described for the seed train mapping, directed modeling
without major effort, and its optimization regarding selected optimization criteria
such as optimal points in time for cell passaging. Furthermore, the method can
also be applied for the set-up of a new seed train, for example for a new cell
line. Although the chapter is directed towards suspension cell lines, the method
is also generally applicable, e.g. for adherent cell lines.

text: For the production of biopharmaceuticals a seed train is required to generate
an adequate number of cells for inoculation of the production bioreactor. This
seed train is time- and cost-intensive but offers potential for optimization.
A method and a protocol are described for the seed train mapping, directed modeling
without major effort, and its optimization regarding selected optimization criteria
such as optimal points in time for cell passaging. Furthermore, the method can
also be applied for the set-up of a new seed train, for example for a new cell
line. Although the chapter is directed towards suspension cell lines, the method
is also generally applicable, e.g. for adherent cell lines.

text: In this paper we propose a novel, extended perspective on evidential aggregation
rules in machine condition monitoring. First, aspects regarding the interconnections
between Dempster-Shafer, Fuzzy Set, and Possibility Theory are shown. Subsequently,
a novel approach for direct determination of basic probability assignments using
Fuzzy membership functions is proposed. Finally, it is applied to a pipe extrusion
line's condition monitoring system, considering and reducing pairwise conflicts.

text: In the context of the increasing use of new portable evices, the potential
of binaural recording techniques is being reconsidered. This kind of recording
technique simulates human hearing and provides a 3D recording space, bringing
in new mixing possibilities. For this paper, a song has been produced using inaural
recording techniques and tested on a group of average listeners. The results suggest
great potential for this technique for music production due to the 3D space that
it brings but also significant limitation for commercial broadcasting.

text: The need for multiple radio systems in overlapping regions of a factory plant
introduces a coexistence problem. The current research challenge is to design
and realize radio systems that should be able to achieve a desired quality of
service (QoS) in this coexisting environment. Currently transmission resources
of hyperspace are not properly exploited. The cognitive radio (CR), which can
adapt to the environmental changes by reconfiguring itself, can be used to implement
intelligent radio systems to exploit the orthogonal nature of multiple dimensions
of hyperspace to maintain the desired QoS in coexisting factory environments.
We present initial results of a coexistence optimized CR which can exploit frequency
and power, which are two of several dimensions of hyperspace, to improve its QoS
    in coexisting environments.

text: The production of printing goods is laborious. Furthermore, the print quality,
especially in banknotes, must be assured. It is accepted, that print defects are
generated because printing parameters, also machine parameters can change unnoticed.
Therefore, a combined concept for a multi-sensory learning and classification
model based on new adaptive fuzzy-pattern-classifiers for data inspection is proposed.
This inspection concept, which combines optical, acoustical and other machine
information, comes up with a large amount of data, which leads to multivariate
methods for data analysis. Multivariate methods are useful for analysis of large
and complex data sets that consist of many variables measured on large numbers
    of physical data.
