text: 'Daylight saving time (DST) affects millions of people in various everyday
situations and is a common topic of debate in legislative parliaments around the
world. This paper presents a literature review on the effects of the clock change
and DST on electricity usage, health, crime rates, road safety, and economic aspects.
This addresses a gap in current literature reviews, as there is a lack of linked
analyses considering these research fields. We show that there are partial positive
effects on crime rates and road safety generally that result from the delay in
ambient light availability. This contrasts with the clearly negative effects on
health and the economic aspects, which are mainly driven by the disturbed circadian
rhythm and the resulting sleep problems. Furthermore, we find that the initial
idea of DST to save electricity will probably no longer apply and may even lead
to increased usage. This literature review provides a basis for future research
and promotes interdisciplinary research by summarizing current findings in a cross-disciplinary
manner and identifying research gaps and opportunities. Furthermore, the findings
may guide policy-making discussions and decisions. '

  text: '
Abstract
Traditional work models often need
more flexibility and time autonomy for employees, especially in manufacturing.
Quantitative approaches and Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications offer the
potential to improve work design. However, current research does not entirely
focus on human-centric criteria that enable time autonomy. This paper addresses
this gap by developing a set of criteria to evaluate intelligent personnel planning
approaches based on their ability to enhance time autonomy for employees. Existing
quantitative approaches are not sufficient to fully integrate the developed criteria.
Consequently,
a novel model approach is proposed in an attempt to bridge the gap between current
practices and the newly developed criteria. This two-stage planning approach fosters
democratization of time autonomy on the shopfloor, moving beyond traditional top-down
scheduling. The paper concludes by outlining the implementation process and discusses
future developments with respect to AI for this model approach.
Practical
Relevance: In order to make working conditions on the shopfloor
in high-wage countries more attractive, an alternative organization of shift work
is needed. Intelligent planning approaches that combine traditional operations
research methods with artificial intelligence approaches can democratize shift
organization regarding time autonomy. Planning that takes both employee and employer
preferences into account in a balanced way will strengthen the long-term competitiveness
of manufacturing companies in high-wage countries and counteract the shortage
    of skilled labor.
'

text: Artificial light at night significantly alters the predictability of the natural
light cycles that most animals use as an essential Zeitgeber for daily activity.
Direct light has well-documented local impacts on activity patterns of diurnal
and nocturnal organisms. However, artificial light at night also contributes to
an indirect illumination of the night sky, called skyglow, which is rapidly increasing.
The consequences of this wide-spread form of artificial night light on the behaviour
of animals remain poorly understood, with only a few studies performed under controlled
(laboratory) conditions. Using animal-borne activity loggers, we investigated
daily and seasonal flight activity of a free-living crepuscular bird species in
response to nocturnal light conditions at sites differing dramatically in exposure
to skyglow. We find that flight activity of European Nightjars (Caprimulgus europaeus)
during moonless periods of the night is four times higher in Belgium (high skyglow
exposure) than in sub-tropical Africa and two times higher than in Mongolia (near-pristine
skies). Moreover, clouds darken the sky under natural conditions, but skyglow
can strongly increase local sky brightness on overcast nights. As a result, we
find that nightjars' response to cloud cover is reversed between Belgium and sub-tropical
Africa and between Belgium and Mongolia. This supports the hypothesis that cloudy
nights reduce individual flight activity in a pristine environment, but increase
it when the sky is artificially lit. Our study shows that in the absence of direct
light pollution, anthropogenic changes in sky brightness relieve nightjars from
visual constraints on being active. Individuals adapt daily activities to artificial
night-sky brightness, allowing them more time to fly than conspecifics living
under natural light cycles. This modification of the nocturnal timescape likely
affects behavioural processes of most crepuscular and nocturnal species, but its
implications for population dynamics and interspecific interactions remain to
    be investigated.

text: Continuous processes offer more environmentally friendlier beer production
compared to the batch production. However, the continuous production of mashing
has not become state-of-the-art in the brewing industry. The controllability and
flexibility of this process still has hurdles for practical implementation, but
which are necessary to react to changing raw materials. Once overcome, a continuous
mashing can be efficiently adapted to the raw materials. Both mean residence time
and temperature were investigated as key parameters to influence the extract and
fermentable sugar content of the wort. The continuous mashing process was implemented
as continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) cascade consisting of mashing in (20°C),
protein rest (50°C), β-amylase rest (62-64°C), saccharification rest (72°C) and
mashing out (78°C). Two different temperature settings for the β-amylase rest
were investigated with particular emphasis on fermentable sugars. Analysis of
Variance (ANOVA) and a post-hoc analysis showed that the mean residence time and
temperature settings were suitable control parameters for the fermentable sugars.
In the experimental conditions, the most pronounced effect was with the β-amylase
rest. These results broaden the understanding of heterogenous CSTR mashing systems
about assembly and selection of process parameters

text: Failure in time (FIT) is an important measure for the reliability of electrical
connectors. Due to the very long lifetime of connectors, the tests for the determination
of FIT rate are time and labour intensive. In this paper a data driven method
using a statistical process to estimate the FIT rate of electrical connectors
with data of electrical contact resistance development in short term tests is
proposed. The results of prediction are then compared with the results from long
term tests. The study shows a strong correlation between contact resistance development
in short term tests and the development of the number of failures in later stages
of tests. In order to predict the development of degradation precisely, the distribution
of resistance data in many different tests with different connectors is investigated.
The Generalized Extreme Value Distribution, which reveals an ideal fitting, has
been implemented for the prediction of the failure rates of connectors, thereby
enabling a remarkable time-lapse of lifetime tests. This method can also be employed
in the prognosis and management of system health through the forecast of health
of connectors in different systems in operation.

text: 'The real and effective ground of all new concepts dedicated to the current
advanced factories, as well as to the future digital ones, is close cooperativity
of scattered applications in highly heterogeneous systems. Communication is the
key enabling component, and all new approaches are inspired in practice to the
demanding characteristics of industrial networks. These kinds of computer networks,
together with new technologies derived from distant application fields, are the
main technological means to accelerate the fast evolution of modern factory systems.
Due to various communication requirements coming from the plurality of structures,
components and application contexts, communication subsystems must be increasingly
heterogeneous. Let us say clearly: this evolution cannot be stopped at this stage,
no special universal solution is possible, and thinking about monogamous networking
is a kind of dreamland. This paper is an analysis of the state of the art in the
matter of heterogeneous networking in industry. It deeply investigates both wired
and wireless technologies from the point of view of technological aspects and
relevant key performance indicators, such as those related to dependability, and
it contains a prospective estimation of future trends.'

text: Continuous mashing provides advantages compared to conventional batch-wise
mashing in terms of space time yield. The majority of fermentable sugars are generated
during the so-called “β-amylase rest” (62–64 ◦C). These low molecular sugars are
fermented later in the brewing process by yeasts and therefore determine the beer
attenuation degree. Biological malt variations complicate the application of a
continuous system in industrial scale particularly concerning targeted quality
parameters. The aim is the prediction of sugar formation from process parameters
for a real time control system. Therefore, a semi-empirical model for sugar formation
in a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) system was developed under incorporation
of the residence time distri- bution (RTD). The here presented model, which focuses
on the “β-amylase rest”, is able to predict fermentable sugar concentrations in
the continuous “β-amylase rest” with sufficient accuracy, in contrast to models
that only use the flow rate and the reactor volume to determine the reaction time.
However, the precision and trueness depend on the quality of the empirical data
acquired previously in laboratory experiments for the selected temperature and
    raw material quality.

text: Computer-aided assistance systems are entering the world of work and production.
Such systems utilize augmented- and virtual-reality for operator training and
live guidance as well as mobile maintenance and support. This is particularly
important in the modern production reality of ever-changing products and `lot
size one' customization of production. This paper focuses on the application of
machine learning approach to extend the functionality of assistance systems. Machine
learning provides tools to analyse large amounts of data and extract meaningful
information. The goal here is to recognize the movement of an operator which would
enable automatic display of instructions relevant to them.We present the challenges
facing machine learning applications in human-centered assistance systems and
a framework to assess machine learning approaches feasible for this scenario.
The approach is assessed on a historical data set and then deployed in a work
station for live testing. The post-hoc, or historical, analysis yields promising
results. The ad-hoc, or live, analysis is a complex task and the results are affected
by multiple factors, most of which are introduced by the human influence. The contribution
of this paper is an approach to adapt state- of-the-art machine learning to operator
movement recognition with a special focus on approaches to spatial time series
data pre-processing. Presented experiment results validate the approach and show
that it performs well in a real-world scenario.

text: In the context of Industry 4.0, extensive deployment and application of advanced
manufacturing equipment and various sensors is leading to a growing demand for
data exchange between different devices. In smart factories, network transmission
has multiprotocol features of wired/wireless communication, and different data
flows have different real-time requirements. In this article, a heterogeneous
network architecture based on software-defined network is proposed for realizing
cross-network flexible forwarding of multisource manufacturing data and optimized
utilization of network resources. Subsequently, the mechanism of cross-network
fusion and scheduling (CNFS) is analyzed from the perspective of high dynamic
characteristics and different delay requirements of data flows. Based on this
analysis, a route-aware data flow dynamic reconstruction algorithm is proposed.
The proposed algorithm improves the efficiency of manufacturing data cross-network
fusion, especially for multivariety and small-batch intelligent manufacturing
systems. Furthermore, for meeting the bandwidth requirements of different delay
flows, a delay-sensitive network bandwidth scheduling algorithm is proposed. Finally,
the effectiveness of the proposed CNFS mechanism is verified using a candy packaging
    intelligent production line prototype platform.

text: Wireless industrial environments are dominated by multipath propagation and
interference. In order to handle spatial diversity, a possible approach is dividing
the physical area into many small cells. The spatial diversity is turned into
FDMA by utilizing different frequency bands for neighboring cells. A challenging
use case with fast vehicles traveling over long distances in a short time is the
packaging industry. It would require many fast handoffs for each vehicle. Thus,
a small cell FDMA approach is not appropriate. Conversely, employing radiating
lines eliminates FDMA-based handoff issues, and reduces multipath delay spread
and signal attenuation compared to centralized approaches. Additionally, radiating
lines perform well in high-speed, low-power and long-range environments. In this
    paper, we realize a novel radiating-line-based, high-reliable, real-time transmission
system with near-field coupling. This wireless transmission method results in
a frequency-flat, time-invariant radio channel for the given requirements. Employing
antenna diversity results in significant improvements in the system's performance
    compared to single antenna solutions.

text: This dissertation proposes and investigates an isochronous wireless network
for industrial control applications with guaranteed latencies and jitter. Based
on a requirements analysis of real industrial applications and the characterisation
of the wireless channel, the solution approach is developed. It consists of a
TDMA-based medium access control, a dynamic resource allocation and the provision
of a global time base for the wired and the wireless network. Due to the global
time base, the solution approach allows a seamless and synchronous integration
into existing wired Real-time Ethernet systems.

text: In modern industrial applications driven by Cyber-physical systems (CPS) it
is a challenging task to model and optimize processes such as machine analysis
and diagnosis. Since the CPS have to act autonomously, a procedure for automated
decision making has to be designed. In our work we concentrate on the design of
a decision procedure by a fuzzy classifier approach. For our application on decision
making in an industrial environment, a fuzzy approach was picked as convenient
classification technique regarding balance between accuracy and computational
time. We present a supervised learning method called FUZZY-ComRef which combines
fuzzy classification and our combinatorial refinement method, called ComRef [1].
Due to the fact that fuzzy classification might behave inaccurately for some datasets,
the aim of our approach is to improve the results provided by the (stand-alone)
fuzzy classification. We show the performance of FUZZY-ComRef evaluated on the
samples from the UCI Repository and on our real-world dataset Motor Drive Diagnosis.
In addition, we discuss the quadratic computational time problem arising from
the combinatorial nature of ComRef. Furthermore, we show based on real-time evaluations
that within parallelisation the proposed FUZZY-ComRef is suitable to many applications
    in CPS.

text: Industrial wireless communication in license-free spectrum bands such as the
2.4-GHz-ISM band suffer from motion and multipath effects, which cause a high
time- and frequency-variant channel attenuation. Additionally, mutual interference
from heterogeneous wireless technologies limits real-time capabilities of industrial
wireless technologies. Therefore, performance validations of industrial wireless
technologies within appropriate industrial wireless environments are necessary.
In this paper, we present the first raw measurement data set publication of an
industrial wireless environment characterization in a data repository for free
public access to enable transparent industrial wireless technology validation
and to enhance their comparability. We characterize the whole license-free 2.4-GHz-ISM
band with a time resolution of 110 μs and a frequency resolution of 1MHz in a
coexistence scenario with four antennas obstructed by robot arm movements. Additionally,
the frequency and time variance of the measured channel attenuations are analyzed.

text: 'A major challenge in modern data-centric medicine is the increasing amount
of time-dependent data, which requires efficient user-friendly solutions for dealing
with such data. To create an effective and efficient knowledge discovery process,
it is important to support common data manipulation tasks by creating quick, responsive
and intuitive interaction methods. In this paper we describe some methods for
interactive longitudinal data visualization with focus on the usage of mobile
multi-touch devices as interaction medium, based on our design and development
experiences. We argue that when it comes to longitudinal data this device category
offers remarkable additional interaction benefits compared to standard point-and-click
desktop computer devices. An important advantage of multi-touch devices arises
when interacting with particularly large longitudinal data sets: Complex, coupled
interactions such as zooming into a region and scrolling around almost simultaneously
is more easily achieved with the possibilities of a multi-touch device than compared
to a regular mouse-based interaction device.'

text: "The use of mobile computing is expanding dramatically in recent years and
trends indicate that “the future is mobile”. Nowadays, mobile computing plays
an increasingly important role in the biomedical domain, and particularly in hospitals.
The benefits of using mobile devices in hospitals are no longer disputed and many
applications for medical care are already available. Many studies have proven
that mobile technologies can bring various benefits for enhancing information
management in the hospital. But is mobility a solution for every problem?\r\n\r\nIn
this paper, we will demonstrate that mobility is not always an advantage. On the
basis of a field study at the pediatric surgery of a large University Hospital,
we have learned within a two-year long mobile computing project, that mobile devices
have indeed many disadvantages, particularly in stressful and hectic situations
and we conclude that mobile computing is not always advantageous."

text: For the production of biopharmaceuticals a seed train is required to generate
an adequate number of cells for inoculation of the production bioreactor. This
seed train is time- and cost-intensive but offers potential for optimization.
A method and a protocol are described for the seed train mapping, directed modeling
without major effort, and its optimization regarding selected optimization criteria
such as optimal points in time for cell passaging. Furthermore, the method can
also be applied for the set-up of a new seed train, for example for a new cell
line. Although the chapter is directed towards suspension cell lines, the method
is also generally applicable, e.g. for adherent cell lines.
