In der vorliegenden Dissertation werden mögliche Auswirkungen von Komplexität auf die Performance von Produktionsgruppen untersucht. Es werden sechs Studien durchgeführt, die inhaltlich und methodisch aufeinander aufbauen und somit einen vollständigen Forschungsprozess von der initialen Begriffsbestimmung bis hin zur Ableitung von Gestaltungsempfehlungen für die betriebliche Praxis beschreiben.\r\nIn der Explorationsphase wird zunächst eine qualitative Interviewstudie durchgeführt, um konkrete Treiber für das Phänomen der Komplexität in digitalisierten Arbeitssystemen zu identifizieren. Basierend auf zwei systematischen Literaturstudien wird der Stand der Forschung zu (1) Komplexitätsmodellen und (2) Gruppenperformancemodellen im Kontext von Produktionssystemen strukturiert erarbeitet und das bestehende Forschungsdefizit offengelegt.\r\nAuf der Grundlage der Vorstudien wird ein hypothetisches Modell zur Erklärung der Performance von Produktionsgruppen entwickelt, das neben bekannten Einflussgrößen aus der Teamforschung verschiedene Komplexitätsdimensionen berücksichtigt. Die Operationalisierung der latenten Variablen erfolgt mit Hilfe einer weiteren qualitativen Interviewstudie. Das\r\nGruppenperformancemodell wird in einer Fragebogenstudie (n = 455) unter Anwendung der Methode der Strukturgleichungsmodellierung empirisch evaluiert. In der statistischen Auswertung wird u. a. festgestellt, dass ein positiver Zusammenhang zwischen der Aufgabenkomplexität und der Gruppenperformance besteht, der über die Qualität der Zusammenarbeit vermittelt wird. Dahingegen wird ein negativer Zusammenhang zwischen der Komplexität des Gruppendesigns und der Gruppenperformance identifiziert, der ebenfalls über die Qualität der Zusammenarbeit vermittelt wird. Aus den Ergebnissen werden konkrete Empfehlungen für die komplexitätsbezogene Gestaltung von Gruppenarbeit in der Produktion abgeleitet.\r\nDarüber hinaus wird eine Metrik zur Erfassung der Komplexität des Arbeitsprozesses von Produktionsgruppen entwickelt und in einer Simulationsstudie evaluiert. Die Metrik kann bereits in Planungsphasen von Produktionssystemen verwendet werden, um alternative arbeitsorganisatorische Gestaltungsoptionen anhand des resultierenden Komplexitätsniveaus für die Produktionsgruppe vergleichend zu analysieren. Zudem können die Auswirkungen unterschiedlicher Qualifikationsprofile auf das Komplexitätsniveau und die Performance einer Produktionsgruppe untersucht werden.","lang":"ger"},{"lang":"eng","text":"The increase in complexity in production systems represents one of the major challenges for manufacturing companies. In this dissertation, possible effects of complexity on the performance of production groups are examined. Six studies are carried out, which build on each other in terms of content and methodology and thus cover a complete research process from\r\nthe initial definition of key concepts up to the derivation of design recommendations for operational practice.\r\nWithin the exploratory phase, a qualitative interview study is conducted in order to identify drivers of the phenomenon of complexity in digitalized work systems. Based on two systematic literature studies, the state of research on (1) complexity models and (2) group performance models in the context of production systems is examined in a structured way and the existing research deficit is pointed out.\r\nOn the basis of the preliminary studies, a hypothetical model is developed to explain the performance of production groups. The model includes different complexity dimensions in addition to known influencing variables from team research. The operationalization of the latent variables is carried out with a further qualitative interview study. The group performance model is\r\nempirically evaluated in a questionnaire study (n = 455) using the method of structural equation modelling. On the one hand, the results of the statistical analysis show that there is a positive relationship between task complexity and group performance, which is mediated by the quality of teamwork. On the other hand, a negative relationship is identified between the complexity of group design and group performance, which is also mediated by the quality of teamwork. The findings are used to derive specific recommendations for the complexity-related design of group work in production.\r\nIn addition, a metric to capture the complexity of the work process of production groups is developed and evaluated in a simulation study. The metric is applicable in early planning phases of production systems. The resulting complexity level for the production group can be used for a comparative analysis of organizational design options.
