This study aims to examine the effects of an integrated urban intervention with NBS at its core, implemented in the Nantes Nord district on residents' physical activity, social activity, environmental quality of life and social network as well as self-rated health and mental health. Analysing 902 observations from 2 datasets, pre- and post-intervention, we categorized 802 participants within Nantes Nord as the treatment group and 100 from other districts as the control group. We used Propensity Score Matching to adjust for selection bias in the dataset and Difference-in-Differences analysis to evaluate changes in physical activity, socializing activities, social networks, environmental quality of life, as well as self-rated health and mental health outcomes. Our results indicate that the urban tranformation with NBS at its core was associated with a significant increase in physical activity levels and to some extent in social ties. However, no immediate improvements were noticeable in socializing activities, environmental quality of life, or health outcomes, suggesting a latency in the broader effects of such interventions. This study underscores the immediate effects of the integrated NBS intervention on physical activity as a precursor to potentially more significant health benefits, which should be followed up with a more mid-to-long-term evaluation of such NBS interventions. Our findings advocate for the integration of connected green space corridors in urban planning to facilitate active lifestyles as sustainable commitments by local authorities and stakeholders."}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"user_id":"83781","department":[{"_id":"DEP1055"},{"_id":"DEP1600"}],"page":"In Press, Journal Pre-proof","author":[{"full_name":"Cardinali, Marcel","id":"58462","orcid":"0000-0002-8841-9345","last_name":"Cardinali","first_name":"Marcel"},{"last_name":"Fleury-Bahi","first_name":"Ghozlane","full_name":"Fleury-Bahi, Ghozlane"},{"full_name":"Sapin, Arnaud","last_name":"Sapin","first_name":"Arnaud"},{"full_name":"Bodénan, Philippe","last_name":"Bodénan","first_name":"Philippe"},{"first_name":"Beatrice","last_name":"Bechet","full_name":"Bechet, Beatrice"},{"full_name":"Petrova, Milena Tasheva","last_name":"Petrova","first_name":"Milena Tasheva"},{"last_name":"Burov","first_name":"Angel","full_name":"Burov, Angel"},{"full_name":"Ferilli, Guido","first_name":"Guido","last_name":"Ferilli"}],"place":"[Amsterdam] "},{"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"As automation is progressively more present in buildings, it is important to understand its impact on people’s experience of urban environments. This case study investigated how one automated shading system with motorized venetian blinds affects sound perception of the acoustic environment in the immediate outdoor surroundings of a university campus building in Detmold, Germany. Procedures of ISO 12913 series for soundscape research were followed to conduct acoustic measurements and derive psychoacoustic indicators. Additionally, soundwalks involving 41 participants and a laboratory study using immersive virtual reality (VR) with 34 participants were conducted to assess how individuals perceive the acoustic environment. The results show that the operation of automated blinds increases sound levels above reference thresholds at short distances, and has a consistent effect on the soundscape, shifting it from pleasant and calm to annoying and chaotic. These trends are notable in both on-site and laboratory data. Additionally, when participants evaluated the soundscape in direct visual connection with the operating façade shading system, they perceived the sounds to be less chaotic than when they were not seeing the façade. These findings highlight that automated buildings and façades are active sound sources capable of influencing environmental quality through acoustic and non-acoustic effects; therefore, their influence on the soundscape should be considered within performance assessments, smart/automation policy, and sustainability frameworks."}],"title":"Influence of automated façades on the soundscape outside of buildings","doi":"10.1016/j.apacoust.2026.111498","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0003-682X"],"eissn":["1872-910X"]},"place":"Amsterdam [u.a.]","author":[{"id":"74171","full_name":"Balderrama, Alvaro","orcid":"0000-0002-4118-2838","first_name":"Alvaro","last_name":"Balderrama"},{"full_name":"Luna-Navarro, Alessandra","first_name":"Alessandra","last_name":"Luna-Navarro"},{"last_name":"Kang","first_name":"Jian","full_name":"Kang, Jian"},{"full_name":"Al Basha, Hussam","first_name":"Hussam","last_name":"Al Basha"},{"last_name":"Verschuur","first_name":"Eric","full_name":"Verschuur, Eric"},{"last_name":"Arztmann","first_name":"Daniel","full_name":"Arztmann, Daniel","id":"58805"},{"first_name":"Ulrich","last_name":"Knaack","full_name":"Knaack, Ulrich","id":"27160"}],"department":[{"_id":"DEP1634"}],"intvolume":" 254","user_id":"83781","publication":"Applied Acoustics","citation":{"chicago-de":"Balderrama, Alvaro, Alessandra Luna-Navarro, Jian Kang, Hussam Al Basha, Eric Verschuur, Daniel Arztmann und Ulrich Knaack. 2026. Currently, there is no agreed - upon strategy on how to transform historic parts of the city while maintaining their heritage values. Many cities today are characterised by modern 20th - century heritage, yet it poses a challenge to their liveability and to the adoption of less car - dependent lifestyles. The concept of 15 - minute cities can be used to improve urban liveability, which may positively affect the experience and functionality of modern historic urban landscapes (HUL). A review of the existing literature on the 15 - minute city concept was carried out with the aim of identifying its key indicators and proposing possible new ones. This research primarily explores how the 15 - minute city concept can be applied holistically and efficiently in modern heritage. Following the PRISMA guidelines, 20 articles published after the introduction of the concept and meeting the inclusion criteria in the Scopus and Web of Science (WoS) databases were reviewed. Selected examples and case studies are analysed to contextualise these variables and explore how they can be reflected in modern historic urban landscapes. As a result, the following variables are identified as central to the 15 - minute city concept: mobility, time, distance, speed, functions of the amenities each with their associated indicators. Moreover, spatial characteristics, human - centred factors and heritage values are proposed as variables. The results are expected to give insights into how to operationalise the concept of 15 - minute cities in modern sites of historic urban landscapes, in order to improve liveability while simultaneously preserving its values. This research contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting walkable, climate - resilient neighbourhoods. In particular, it aligns with SDG Target 11.4, which focuses on cultural and natural heritage."}],"department":[{"_id":"DEP1647"},{"_id":"DEP1620"}],"user_id":"83781","intvolume":" 2","place":"Kraków ","author":[{"last_name":"Erol","first_name":"Aylin","id":"87943","full_name":"Erol, Aylin"},{"first_name":"Marcel","last_name":"Cardinali","orcid":"0000-0002-8841-9345","full_name":"Cardinali, Marcel","id":"58462"},{"first_name":"Susanne","last_name":"Kost","id":"83142","full_name":"Kost, Susanne"},{"last_name":"Pottgiesser","first_name":"Uta","orcid":"0000-0002-8594-3168","id":"27166","full_name":"Pottgiesser, Uta"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["1640-4920"]},"page":"1-9"},{"date_created":"2024-03-22T18:54:29Z","type":"scientific_journal_article","year":"2023","issue":"69","date_updated":"2024-03-25T07:54:25Z","citation":{"bjps":"Altintas Kaptan M, Ünlü A and Pottgiesser U (2023) Connecting the Dots. Journal / DOCOMOMO, International Working Party for Documentation and Conservation of Buildings, Sites and Neighbourhoods of the Modern Movement 76–85.","ufg":"Altintas Kaptan, Meric/Ünlü, Aslıhan/Pottgiesser, Uta: Connecting the Dots, in: Journal / DOCOMOMO, International Working Party for Documentation and Conservation of Buildings, Sites and Neighbourhoods of the Modern Movement (2023), H. 69, S. 76–85.","din1505-2-1":"Altintas Kaptan, Meric ; Ünlü, Aslıhan ; Pottgiesser, Uta: Connecting the Dots. Docomomo has been playing a pivotal role in documenting and safeguarding significant architectural works of the 20th century. Its National and Regional Working Parties (WPs), spread across the globe, have diligently compiled archives of photographs, drawings, historical records, and research materials related to Modern Movement architecture, town planning and landscape design. However, the decentralized nature of these archives poses challenges in terms of accessibility, coordination, and attaining a more comprehensive record of the Modern Movement with a global perspective. Therefore, this study undertakes the explorative task of compiling data from these separate online-available archives of the WPs to attain a broader overview of the documented objects of Modern Movement architecture on a global-scale. The collected data is analyzed to identify patterns, trends, and influential architects and to elaborate on the potential factors contributing to the current status. The study involves analysis of the predominant format of building use/function among documented architectural works, examination of the geographical and chronological coverage of available lists, and the distribution of intervention status within the inventory. These aspects provide valuable insights into the functional diversity, geographic spread, and preservation status of architectural works documented in the dispersed archives. This study also facilitates comparative studies between different regions and countries, shedding light on the shared characteristics and unique contributions of the Modern Movement across diverse cultural contexts. The results help identify trends, gaps, and areas of focus for future research and documentation efforts, ensuring the holistic appreciation of architectural works, and contributing to the scholarly understanding and preservation of this modern heritage.","lang":"eng"}],"alternative_title":["A global exploration of local Docomomo Inventories"],"department":[{"_id":"DEP1620"}],"user_id":"83781","oa":"1","place":"Eindhoven","author":[{"full_name":"Altintas Kaptan, Meric","first_name":"Meric","last_name":"Altintas Kaptan"},{"full_name":"Ünlü, Aslıhan","first_name":"Aslıhan","last_name":"Ünlü"},{"full_name":"Pottgiesser, Uta","last_name":"Pottgiesser","first_name":"Uta"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["1380-3204"]},"page":"76-85"},{"publication_identifier":{"issn":["1380-3204"]},"page":"2-3","place":"Eindhoven","author":[{"last_name":"Pottgiesser","first_name":"Uta","orcid":"0000-0002-8594-3168","id":"27166","full_name":"Pottgiesser, Uta"},{"full_name":"Quist, Wido","last_name":"Quist","first_name":"Wido"}],"department":[{"_id":"DEP1620"}],"user_id":"83781","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"After the two 2022-issues of the Docomomo Journal, number 66 on ‘Modern Plastic Heritage’ and number 67 on ‘Multiple Modernisms in Ukraine,’ this issue reveals another chapter of an often and diversely described theme of Modern Movement and a pressing subject worldwide: Housing."}],"title":"Towards a Housing Preservation Culture","doi":"10.52200/docomomo.68.ed","status":"public","publisher":"University of Technology","publication_status":"published","keyword":["Urban Studies","Architecture"],"_id":"11275","publication":"Journal / DOCOMOMO, International Working Party for Documentation and Conservation of Buildings, Sites and Neighbourhoods of the Modern Movement","citation":{"ieee":"U. Considering that middle-class mass housing dominates most of our cities, the research translates into the study of the extensive development of cities in Europe after World War II. The breadth of the theme and the differences between the countries make it difficult to construct a systematic and unified criticism of middle-class mass housing, albeit concentrating on the post-war period. The COST-Action has the goal to build a network to gather research representing the pooled knowledge and experiences from the network of multidisciplinary researchers. So, transversally throughout the Working Groups, an inventory of case studies, a collection of articles, and studies on the policies were produced. This paper elaborates on the collected and produced material and data in order to trigger comparisons and reflections on the approaches and methodologies to face the complexity of middle-class mass housing topic. The comparison was built by using different methods intersecting multiple points of view and following specific thematic tracks that seek to deconstruct the complexity of the middle-class mass housing topic into singular aspects. This paper presents the results of data analyses, visualisation techniques and comparative studies to identify massification processes, morphological structures, demographic and policy developments. It shows a combination of several methods to build a cross-sectional and systematic approach to the diverse knowledge envisioned to develop a methodology for future research. This can be especially useful for future developments and insights towards joint or individual European guidelines, laws and policies to improve the dilapidated housing stock, current housing situation and to compete the housing crisis in general."}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.52200/docomomo.68.08","title":"Evaluation & Criticism : Transversal Comparative Approach to Middle-Class Mass Housing ","author":[{"full_name":"Benbernou, Ahmed","last_name":"Benbernou","first_name":"Ahmed"},{"first_name":"Alessandra","last_name":"Como","full_name":"Como, Alessandra"},{"full_name":"Harea, Olga","first_name":"Olga","last_name":"Harea"},{"last_name":"Pottgiesser","first_name":"Uta","orcid":"0000-0002-8594-3168","full_name":"Pottgiesser, Uta","id":"27166"},{"first_name":"Kritika","last_name":"Singhal","id":"76799","full_name":"Singhal, Kritika"},{"full_name":"Smeragliuolo Perrotta, Luisa","first_name":"Luisa","last_name":"Smeragliuolo Perrotta"}],"place":"Eindhoven","oa":"1","page":"76-88","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1380-3204"]},"user_id":"83781","department":[{"_id":"DEP1620"}]},{"title":"Historic development of policies and regulations concerning residential heritage in the Old City of Aleppo","doi":"10.1108/jchmsd-05-2022-0072","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"
Purpose
Housing interventions carried out in accordance with current regulations in the Old City of Aleppo, both before and after the Syrian war, are minor in comparison to those carried out without a license and illegally. This research identifies the concepts of self-management and social ownership of housing in the post-World War II period in Yugoslavia as an important legacy of Yugoslav urban planning and housing policies. Although they were subsequently neglected, these concepts can contribute to contemporary global discussions about housing affordability and the role of community in ensuring spatial and social equality. New Belgrade mass housing blocks—the main site for testing the new dwelling concepts, in terms of both policies and modernist design—are the object of this research. The article is mainly a theoretical analysis of the issues of common interest and engagement, common good, and common spaces which played a decisive role in its design. The study applies interpretative and correlational research methods in re-theorizing these concepts and their underlying narratives. It traces how the perspectives on the collective practices and spaces evolved over time, revealing a correlation between changed social practices and the spatial deterioration of the New Belgrade mass housing blocks. The study highlights the importance of both collective practices and common spaces for addressing housing issues, emphasizing their instrumentality, and potentiality for rearticulating the dialogue between public and private, engaging citizens in interactive and inclusive decision-making and co-creation of the urban reality."}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"isi":"1","doi":"10.17645/up.v7i1.4746","title":"Self-Management of Housing and Urban Commons: New Belgrade and Reflections on Commons Today","status":"public","volume":7,"publisher":"Cogitatio","publication_status":"published","keyword":["common spaces","community","dwelling concepts","New Belgrade","post-war housing","self-management","urban commons"],"_id":"7470","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://www.cogitatiopress.com/urbanplanning/article/view/4746"}],"publication":"Urban Planning","citation":{"ieee":"A. Noise pollution is one of the most concerning burdens for public health and wellbeing; however, façade acoustic performance is generally not considered in outdoor spaces, in contrast to indoor spaces. This study presents a systematic literature review examining 40 peer-reviewed papers regarding the effects of façades on the urban acoustic environment and the soundscape. Façades affect sound pressure levels and reverberation time in urban spaces and can affect people’s perception of the acoustic environment. The effects are classified into three groups: Effects of façades on the urban acoustic environment, including sound-reflecting, sound-absorbing and sound-producing effects; Effects of façades on the urban soundscape, including auditory and non-auditory effects; Effects of the context on the acoustic environment around façades, including boundary effects and atmospheric effects.\r\n"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"https://doi.org/10.3390/su14159670","title":"Effects of Façades on Urban Acoustic Environment and Soundscape: A Systematic Review","publication_identifier":{"issn":["2071-1050 "]},"author":[{"full_name":"Balderrama, Alvaro","id":"74171","first_name":"Alvaro","last_name":"Balderrama","orcid":"0000-0002-4118-2838"},{"full_name":"Kang, Jian","last_name":"Kang","first_name":"Jian"},{"first_name":"Alejandro","last_name":"Prieto","full_name":"Prieto, Alejandro"},{"first_name":"Alessandra","last_name":"Luna-Navarro","full_name":"Luna-Navarro, Alessandra"},{"id":"58805","full_name":"Arztmann, Daniel","last_name":"Arztmann","first_name":"Daniel"},{"full_name":"Knaack, Ulrich","id":"27160","last_name":"Knaack","first_name":"Ulrich"}],"place":"Basel","user_id":"83781","intvolume":" 15","department":[{"_id":"DEP1034"}],"publication":"Sustainability / Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI)","date_updated":"2024-08-06T12:04:03Z","citation":{"din1505-2-1":"Balderrama, Alvaro ; Kang, Jian ; Prieto, Alejandro ; Luna-Navarro, Alessandra ; Arztmann, Daniel ; Knaack, Ulrich: Effects of Façades on Urban Acoustic Environment and Soundscape: A Systematic Review. Due to different national conditions, the research progress and approaches in industrial heritage reuse in China are different from other countries. While industrial heritage sites in Europe have become part of urban redevelopment in several regions, China still focuses mostly on single objects, lacking systematic analysis, especially at the urban scale. Regarding the city of Nanjing, an operational approach to complex urban dynamics is proposed based on a simplified analysis of official statistics, maps and GIS technology. The influence mechanisms of Nanjing’s urban planning on industrial heritage regeneration and development after 1990 are analyzed. The results show that urban growth boundaries, traffic accessibility, eco-environmental policies, population distribution, industrial renovation investment and natural resource change all have a significant impact on the abandonment and regeneration of Nanjing industrial heritage. This study expands the research perspective of industrial heritage reuse in China and proposes a clearer systematic planning strategy for the future of industrial heritage in cities."}],"article_type":"review","keyword":["urban development","mechanism of influence","industrial heritage","reuse"],"publication_status":"published","_id":"9203","status":"public","publisher":"MDPI","volume":11,"issue":"6","year":"2022","article_number":"852","quality_controlled":"1","type":"scientific_journal_article","date_created":"2022-12-10T16:37:36Z","publication":"Land : open access journal","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://www.mdpi.com/2073-445X/11/6/852"}],"date_updated":"2024-08-05T07:16:33Z","citation":{"van":"Wu Y, Pottgiesser U, Quist W, Zhou Q. The project proposes a mixed-use transformation that reinterprets the building as a “city within the city,” inspired by Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation in Marseille. The existing structure is strategically reduced to its essential load-bearing concrete frame and floor slabs, preserving the structural skeleton while enabling radical spatial reconfiguration.\r\nPrefabricated timber modules are inserted and cantilevered between the reinforced-concrete columns, extending the usable floor area and introducing a warm, contemporary material contrast to the original façade. This intervention not only increases density and flexibility but also redefines the tower’s appearance, giving it a cosmopolitan and forward-looking architectural identity. The ground floor is conceived as an open and publicly accessible urban platform, activating the surrounding plaza and strengthening social interaction. Upper floors are redesigned as affordable and attractive living spaces for young residents, encouraging a diverse and vibrant community within the building.\r\nA newly designed park-like rooftop landscape provides recreational space and panoramic views over the city, enhancing environmental quality and urban connectivity. By combining structural preservation, modular timber construction, public programming, and residential reuse, the proposal demonstrates how high-rise retrofitting can generate social, ecological, and economic value simultaneously. The project positions adaptive reuse as a viable strategy for sustainable urban regeneration and architectural longevity."}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"title":"TreeTower","date_created":"2026-02-12T11:47:28Z","type":"bachelor_thesis","year":"2020","extern":"1"},{"date_created":"2021-01-15T10:49:20Z","type":"book_chapter","year":"2013","date_updated":"2026-07-07T08:34:07Z","citation":{"havard":"C. In a first step, existing application scenarios and prototype applications were analyzed to identify characteristic functionalities of future workplace systems. In the second step, it was tested whether potential end users are willing to employ the identified functionalities in different social situations. The results of the evaluation show, that the social work situation, in which a functionality is going to be used, has a highly significant influence on the participants’ usage intention."}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"extern":"1","title":"Acceptance of Future Workplace Systems: How the Social Situation Influences the Usage Intention of Ambient Intelligence Technologies in Work Environments","status":"public","conference":{"location":"Beijing, China","name":"17th World Congress on Ergonomics (WWCS '09)","start_date":"2009-08-09","end_date":"2009-08-14"},"keyword":["Ambient Intelligence","Ubiquitous Computing","Smart Spaces","Aesthetics","Design","Architecture","Urban Informatics"],"publication_status":"published","_id":"4675","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1"}],"publication":"Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Work With Computer Systems (WWCS'09), Beijing, China","related_material":{"link":[{"url":"https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Carsten_Roecker/publication/228774278_Acceptance_of_Future_Workplace_Systems_How_the_Social_Situation_Influences_the_Usage_Intention_of_Ambient_Intelligence_Technologies_in_Work_Environments/links/0f317535a247685b90000000/Acceptance-of-Future-Workplace-Systems-How-the-Social-Situation-Influences-the-Usage-Intention-of-Ambient-Intelligence-Technologies-in-Work-Environments.pdf","relation":"research_paper"}]},"citation":{"ieee":"C.
