text: Pasteurization of bottles and cans is an important technique for biological
stabilization of beer as well as mixed beer drinks, malt beer and non-alcoholic
beers. Despite recuperation, the heat requirement is very high and can be significantly
reduced by lowering the maximum temperature in the pasteurizer. The current practice
of calculating the lethal heat effect is based on the so-called beer formula using
a globalized z-value for the temperature dependence of the inactivation. The premise
experiments here is that for products containing sugar, such as malt beer, yeast
cells pose the greatest danger. Therefore, the D values at various temperatures
and the z values of three of the Krombacher Brewery's own yeasts (bottom-fermenting
and top-fermenting) were determined in the laboratory using the capillary method.
In a challenge test in the brewery, bottles with different products were inoculated
with these yeasts and samples were taken from the industrial pasteurizer every
two minutes and examined for viable cell counts. Accordingly, using specific D/z
values, precise pasteurization can be achieved, the treatment temperature can
be reduced to 55° C and 20-25% of energy can be saved.

text: In Northwestern Europe, Germany, France, the Netherlands, the UK and Belgium
constitute the biggest five potato producers, with total potato crop production
around 60% of EU-28 production before Brexit. Soil and climate conditions are
highly favourable for potato growth in this region. Production is under driving
forces of (i) the potato processing industry, particularly in Belgium; (ii) the
innovation for fresh potato in the UK, France and Germany; (iii) the leadership
of Germany and the Netherlands for starch potato; and (iv) the dominance of the
Netherlands for seed production. Based on an industrial agri-food production system,
the region has the highest potato yield levels worldwide and developed relevant
trade networks for export of seed, fresh and processed potato products in and
outside Europe. Conventional and intensive potato production is widespread over
the region, whilst organic production started to develop in Germany and France.
Whether the coming decades will be as successful as the last ones for sustainable
potato production will depend on how the sector and stakeholders of the whole
potato value-chain will overcome new issues and challenges. These are mainly soil
quality and health conservation, consequences of climate change, increasing bans
on the use of plant protection products, tightening environmental standards, food
waste reduction and increasing trade tensions hampering the flow of potatoes around
the world. After a detailed description of the potato production in the region,
this paper contains a SWOT analysis aiming to identify potential solutions to
overcome environmental, technical, economic, political and societal issues in
the region for sustainable potato production in the coming years and decades.

text: n the last years, Additive Manufacturing, thanks to its capability of continuous
improvements in performance and cost-efficiency, was able to partly replace and
redefine well-established manufacturing processes. This research is based on the
idea to achieve great cost and operational benefits especially in the field of
tool making for injection molding by combining traditional and additive manufacturing
in one process chain. Special attention is given to the surface quality in terms
of surface roughness and its optimization directly in the Selective Laser Melting
process. This article presents the possibility for a remelting process of the
SLM parts as a way to optimize the surfaces of the produced parts. The influence
of laser remelting on the surface roughness of the parts is analyzed while varying
machine parameters like laser power and scan settings. Laser remelting with optimized
parameter settings considerably improves the surface quality of SLM parts and
is a great starting point for further post-processing techniques, which require
a low initial value of surface roughness.

text: Additive Manufacturing has arisen as a ground-breaking set of technologies
that, thanks to their capability of continuous improvements in performance and
cost-efficiency, was able in the last years to replace well-established manufacturing
processes. Proficiency in the fabrication of highly complex parts forced this
astonishing development. This research is based on the idea that through the integration
of additive and conventional manufacturing technologies it is possible to achieve
great cost and operational benefits especially in the field of tool making for
injection molding. Such an integrated manufacturing solution could overcome the
limitations of independent additive, subtractive, and post-processing procedures
by strengthening their potentialities. The present study highlights the opportunities
of a synergy between the above-mentioned manufacturing technologies for the optimized
fabrication of injection molds. An additive manufacturing process chain is presented,
and special attention is given to the surface quality and its optimization directly
in the Selective Laser Melting process. The potentialities of the Laser Surface
Re-melting technique are analyzed, and the process optimization leads to a reduction
of 45% of the average roughness directly in the SLM process. (C) 2019, IFAC (International

text: The increasing amount of alarms and information for an operator in a modern
plant becomes a significant safety risk. Although the notifications are a valuable
support, they also lead to the curse of overloading with information for the operator.
Due to the huge amount of alarms it is almost impossible to separate the crucial
information from the insignificant ones. Therefore, new procedures are required
to reduce these alarm floods and support the operator to minimize the safety risk.
One approach is based on learning a causal model that represents the relationships
between the alarms. This allows alarm sequences that are causally implied to be
reduced to the root cause alarm. Fundamental element of this approach is the causal
model. Therefore in this work, different probabilistic graphical models are considered
and evaluated on the basis of appropriate criteria. A real use case of a bottle
filling module serves as a benchmark for how well they are suitable as a causal
model for the application in alarm flood reduction.

text: Most of today’s technical parts and components are made of monolithic materials.
These mono-material components produced in established production processes reach
their limits due to their respective material characteristics. Thus, a significant
increase in production quality and efficiency can only be achieved by combining
different materials in one part. Bulk forming of previously joined semi-finished
products to net shape hybrid components that consist of two different materials
is a promising method to produce parts with locally optimized characteristics.
This new production process chain offers a number of advantages compared to conventional
manufacturing technologies. Examples are the production of specific load-adapted
forged parts with a high level of material utilization and an impact on the joining
zone caused by the following forming process. This paper describes the production
process of serially arranged hybrid steel parts, produced by combining a laser
welding process with a subsequent cross wedge rolling process. The presented results
are only a first approach in order to get first insights in the forming behaviour
of laser welded and cross wedge rolled parts. The investigated material combination
is C22 (1.0402) and 20MnCr5 (1.7147). This innovative process chain enables the
production of hybrid parts. To evaluate the developed process chain, the weld
and the joining zone is analysed before and after cross wedge rolling. Main results
are that the joining process using laser welding enables a strong bonding between
the two materials with a higher hardness in the joining zone than for the individual
materials. After the forming process, the bonding of the joining zone is still
present, while the hardness decreased but remains higher than of the materials
    themselves.

text: Additive manufacturing technologies can provide cost and time advantages in
mold making, compared to traditional approaches. Nevertheless, their applicability
is not yet completely proven, especially in terms of surface finishing. The aim
of this research work is to create perfect mold inserts by Selective Laser Melting
(SLM) and to optimize surface quality. Therefore a process is developed to reduce
the effort of surface quality optimization including a high flexibility in design.
The tested process shows that simple and affordable methods can lead to usable
molds with only minor restrictions in terms of appearance. Due to the initial
reduction of layer thicknesses and distinct settings of laser melting parameters,
the surface smoothness is significantly enhanced during the SLM building process.
Subsequently blasting, manual grinding, as well as polishing operations, enable
a selective smoothening of the surface up to a polished finish. As a result, the
built tool parts can be used instantly for injection molding.

text: "Clustering remains a major topic in machine learning; it is used e.g. for
document categorization, for data mining, and for image analysis. In all these
application areas, clustering algorithms try to identify groups of related data
in large data sets.\r\n\r\nIn this paper, the established clustering algorithm
MajorClust ([12]) is improved; making it applicable to data sets with few structure
on the local scale—so called near-homogeneous graphs. This new algorithm MCProb
is verified empirically using the problem of image clustering. Furthermore, MCProb
is analyzed theoretically. For the applications examined so-far, MCProb outperforms
    other established clustering techniques."
