text: 'The following paper examines how gamification principles can expand citizen
engagement and participatory processes in the Smart City. Smart city data in particular
can be communicated excellently via digital media, regardless of location and
time, due to the way it is technologically generated, stored and processed. Consequently,
it makes sense to develop separate digital visualizations and tools for citizens,
which on the one hand explain relevant relationships in a generally understandable
way and on the other hand can reduce the high technological complexity. Especially
in recent times, new formats of digital citizen participation have been emerging,
some of which are specially developed between actors in urban development and
media agencies (i.e. ZebraLog, Decidim, etc.). It is not uncommon that also the
latest technologies such as VR glasses, digital twins, etc. come to use. But despite
all the technological innovation, one of the basic problems of classic participation
remains unsolved: The mix of participating citizens does not reflect the diversity
of society even remotely. Socioeconomically disadvantaged groups in particular
are not sufficiently reached and hence not included; instead, it tends to be the
educated middle class that participates "who may be passionate about certain issues
and ignore larger issues" (Ampatzidou et al. 2018; Akers 2022). Moreover, digital
platforms require the decision to actively access it online. Against the background
of this challenge, the two research teams of the Institute for Design Strategies
at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Ostwestfalen-Lippe are trying to
link digital Smart City techniques with the potential of gamification by building
and testing very simple and analog tools and methods. In these the linked digital
data tends to take place much more in the background while the joy of playing
with tangible elements could support citizen engagement and behavioural changes
in an easier way. This paper looks at a selection of six applied methods and formats
that the team has tested in the public spaces of the medium sized city Detmold,
Germany, in a completely or partially analog way in 2024. Topics such as urban
planning, data security, mobility, climate change and the Smart City itself were
discussed in the formats. The methods tested serve as supplementary elements to
online participation and as a further development of classic outreach. Categorizations
of gamification elements were reviewed for the analysis. In addition, the methods
were classified at different levels of participation according to Cardullo and
Kitchin based on Arnstein''s work. The paper also takes a critical look at the
statement that "Many believe that technological advancements in communication
will support a bright new era of political engagement and dialogue" (Green 2020)
and that digitalization is therefore the panacea for participation. Furthermore,
it has been examined how power imbalances can be countered and a more inviting
environment for participatory practices can be achieved.'

text: HUMAN 2023 is the 6th workshop of a series for the ACM Hypertext conferences.
The HUMAN workshop has a strong focus on the user and thus is complementary to
the strong machine analytics research direction that could be experienced in previous
conferences. The user-centric view on hypertext not only includes user interfaces
and interaction, but also discussions about hypertext application domains as well
as human-centered AI. Furthermore, the workshop raises the question of how original
hypertext ideas (e. g., Doug Engelbart’s "augmenting human intellect" [7] or Jeff
Conklin’s "hypertext as a computer-based medium for thinking and communication"
[6]) can improve today’s hypertext systems.

text: "Graduation Project: Understanding Climate Change, https://climatechange.infografia-design.de/\r\nClimate
change is happening now. Because of our dependence on fossil fuels, climate change
will continue into the future, with relatively unpredictable impacts on humans
and the environment. There are several psychological barriers and other challenges
that prevent people from committing themselves to the cause of mitigating climate
change through behavioral change. The complexity of the issue, its abstract nature
and the uncertainties associated with predictions and scientific research make
it difficult for non-experts to grasp. Interdisciplinary collaborations can overcome
the insular focus of climate change science. A shared methodology that combines
best practices from other disciplines like psychology, marketing and visual communication,
may help to better results when trying to communicate complex messages to the
mainstream public. This research explores the above points and then develops a
series of recommendations for climate change communication based on the gained
knowledge.\r\nThe graduation project (a Website) is based on these recommendations

  text: "Graduation Projekt Website: https://climatechange.infografia-design.de/\r\nClimate
change is happening now. Because of our dependence on fos-sil fuels, climate change
will continue into the future with relatively unpredictable impacts on humans
and the environment. There are several psychological barriers and other challenges
that prevent peo-ple from committing themselves to the cause of mitigating climate
change through behavioral change. The complexity of the issue, its abstract nature
and the uncertainties associated with predictions and scientific research make
it difficult for non-experts to grasp. Interdis-ciplinary collaborations can overcome
the insular focus of climate change science. A shared methodology that combines
best practic-es from other disciplines like psychology, marketing and visual com-munication,
may help to better results when trying to communicate complex messages to the
mainstream public. This research explores the above points and then develops a
series of recommendations for climate change communication based on the gained
knowledge.\r\nThe graduation project (a Website) is based on these recommenda-tions

text: Securing factory communication to protect corporate data is an important concern
in the context of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Various cryptographic
protocols can be used to establish secure communication channels. One of these
protocols is the Transport Layer Security 1.3 (TLS 1.3) protocol. A key component
of the TLS handshake protocol is the Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange
(ECDHKE), a public key cryptosystem used to exchange keys over insecure channels
which can be based on a number of standardized elliptic curves. A special form
of elliptic curves are Montgomery curves which are advantageous compared to more
traditional Weierstrass curves due to their fast arithmetic. This is especially
important when the ECDHKE is performed on embedded devices and in time-critical
situations. In this work, the performance of ECDHKE implementations using standardized
Montgomery curves Curve25519 and Curve448 included in the wolfSSL library are
evaluated on an embedded 32-bit STM32L476RG Nucleo development board designed
by STMicroelectronics. The benchmark results show that using Curve25519 with around
220ms for the key pair generation and the key agreement respectively is approximately
75% faster than using Curve448 with around 900ms for each of the algorithms, which
can be attributed to their differing security levels. These results suggest that
the algorithms might not be fast enough for time critical situations.

text: Stachybotrys chartarum is a toxigenic fungus that is frequently isolated from
damp building materials or improperly stored forage. Macrocyclic trichothecenes
and in particular satratoxins are the most potent mycotoxins known to be produced
by this fungus. Exposure of humans or animals to these secondary metabolites can
be associated with severe health problems. To assess the pathogenic potential
of S. chartarum isolates, it is essential to cultivate them under conditions that
reliably promote toxin production. Potato dextrose agar (PDA) was reported to
be the optimal nutrition medium for satratoxin production. In this study, the
growth of S. chartarum genotype S strains on PDA from two manufacturers led to
divergent results, namely, well-grown and sporulating cultures with high satratoxin
concentrations (20.8 ± 0.4 µg/cm2) versus cultures with sparse sporulation and
low satratoxin production (0.3 ± 0.1 µg/cm2). This finding is important for any
attempt to identify toxigenic S. chartarum isolates. Further experiments performed
with the two media provided strong evidence for a link between satratoxin production
and sporulation. A comparison of three-point and one-point cultures grown on the
two types of PDA, furthermore, demonstrated an inter-colony communication that
influences both sporulation and mycotoxin production of S. chartarum genotype
    S strains.

text: Additive manufacturing (AM) and rapid prototyping process (RPP) have revolutionized
the production of 3D objects in the last few decades. RPP has considerably increased
the rate of production and the possibility of manufacturing prototypes in the
fields of electrical, optical, and mechanical engineering. The manufacturing of
optical prototypes including spherical, aspheric, and special kinds of lenses
and lens arrays has reformed the fabrication of optical components. In this paper,
specifically designed lens array prototypes for application in visible light communication
(VLC) are introduced. These lens array prototypes are manufactured using the stereolithography
apparatus (SLA) process. These lens arrays are designed to achieve optimal transmission
of the light beam for VLC systems. One of the prototypes from the lens arrays
contains primarily four spherical lenses and one thicker convex lens and the other
contains one fresnel lens as a substitute for thicker convex lens. These lens
arrays are further post-processed to achieve the required transparency. These
lens array prototypes are tested using laser and LEDs. The ON-OFF keying modulated
light beam was transmitted through the lens array at the sender side and focused
on the photo-receiver using another lens array at the receiver side which is 200
cm apart. After evaluating these lens prototypes, it can be concluded that with
appropriate post-processing and high-resolution stereolithography based manufacturing,
a low data rate VLC link can be formed.

text: "Visible light communication (VLC) allows the dual use of lighting and wireless
communication systems by\r\nmodulation of illumination devices. However, to increase
the performance, typically, beam-forming measures are\r\ntaken creating pencil
beams, thus contradicting the illumination purpose. In order to optimize the performance\r\ntrade
o\v between e\x0Ecient illumination and communication, the switching capabilities
of illumination LEDs are\r\nexamined. Illumination LEDs with standard drivers
and without beam-forming show limited applicability for\r\ncommunication purposes
as they are not optimized for the necessary switching capability (f \x19 11 MHz)
and\r\ncoherence. Methods to enhance the electrical current by pre-equalisation,
biasing, carrier sweeping and current\r\nshaping are examined in respect to the
illumination LED's communication performance. A novel driver scheme\r\nis derived
which achieves considerably higher switching frequencies (f \x15 100 MHz) without
employing beamforming\r\nat the illumination LED. This driver is able to obtain
    a data rate of up to 200 Mbit/s at a distance of\r\n3.2 m, using on-o\v keying
(OOK) modulation technique. Therefore, it is feasible to apply the LED driver
by\r\nimplementing standardised illumination devices in VLC systems."

text: Due to the dynamic nature of the Industrie 4.0 developments, future production
systems will be reconfigured more frequently and new system configurations will
be deployed automatically. In order to keep pace with this development, it will
be required to observe and ensure the needed security functionalities and corresponding
certifications in an automated way. This implies an improvement of today's static
procedures and manual efforts as much as possible in favor of a dynamic standard
establishment. Therefore, this paper evaluates the state of the art of the industrial
security standardization landscape and proposes a concept for the automated support
of certification processes with information from industrial communication networks
in order to enhance the usability of the standards establishments and the certifications
within organizations and companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises.

text: The reduction of wires and connections is a fundamental necessity for upcoming
industrial 4.0 solutions, requiring a large amount of reconfigurability and flexibility.
Our research focuses on recent ways of combining energy and data transmission
in single contactless transducers, enabling easy installation, maintenance and
possible fulfilment of high protection classes. While this approach can typically
be solved by combining Wifi and inductive energy transfer, the Wifi aspect is
often limited by the available media access and channel occupation. Another issue
is the real time capability of Wifi or other wireless transmission protocols like
IEEE 802.15.4. While creating a new wireless or contactless standard is beyond
the focus of this work, we concentrate on combining existing technologies and
their interoperability. This includes powerline communication systems, near field
data transmission and inductive energy transfer mechanisms.

text: This dissertation proposes and investigates an isochronous wireless network
for industrial control applications with guaranteed latencies and jitter. Based
on a requirements analysis of real industrial applications and the characterisation
of the wireless channel, the solution approach is developed. It consists of a
TDMA-based medium access control, a dynamic resource allocation and the provision
of a global time base for the wired and the wireless network. Due to the global
time base, the solution approach allows a seamless and synchronous integration
into existing wired Real-time Ethernet systems.

text: Industrial wireless communication in license-free spectrum bands such as the
2.4-GHz-ISM band suffer from motion and multipath effects, which cause a high
time- and frequency-variant channel attenuation. Additionally, mutual interference
from heterogeneous wireless technologies limits real-time capabilities of industrial
wireless technologies. Therefore, performance validations of industrial wireless
technologies within appropriate industrial wireless environments are necessary.
In this paper, we present the first raw measurement data set publication of an
industrial wireless environment characterization in a data repository for free
public access to enable transparent industrial wireless technology validation
and to enhance their comparability. We characterize the whole license-free 2.4-GHz-ISM
band with a time resolution of 110 μs and a frequency resolution of 1MHz in a
coexistence scenario with four antennas obstructed by robot arm movements. Additionally,
the frequency and time variance of the measured channel attenuations are analyzed.

text: This paper discusses an alternative to common Powerline or Power-over-Ethernet
applications, combining a 100BASE-TX-equivalent full duplex communication and
simultaneous DC power transmission on one single twisted pair wire. The reduction
of wires and connections can potentially ease the modularity and reconfigurability
of industrial production installations, if the data communication offers a sufficiently
high robustness against influences from the DC power transmission. This part of
our research focuses on the necessary electrical adaptations between data and
power circuitry and evaluates interference scenarios that are common for industrial
    fieldbus installations.

text: This paper illustrates the development of the roomXT system, a mixed reality
communication system for the home domain. RoomXT virtually extends a user's physical
environment by providing a “life-like” communication channel for informal and
spontaneous interactions. We use a wall-sized display together with head-tracking
and 3D rendering to achieve visual contiguity between the real and a virtual environment.
As one possible application of this system, we set up a remote dining situation
for two users. The dinner table is visually extended into the virtual environment
in which a live video stream of the dining partner is shown. Great care was taken
in regard to the aesthetic and device-free integration into the living room. First
impressions of potential users support the validity of our design decisions.

text: This paper presents the evaluation of a mixed reality communication system
for the home domain, called roomXT. The system uses a wall-sized display that
is seamlessly integrated into a living lab, to create a 'life-like' video communication
experience. In order to demonstrate the potential of this approach, we conducted
a living lab study comparing the developed prototype with a desktop-based system.
A special video communication application, which enables spatially separated users
to have a joint dinner experience, served as a common basis for the different
test conditions. Results of the study show that the overall concept of roomXT
was well eceived by users of a wide age range and that the developed prototype
system seems to be preferred to commercially available video communication solutions
with respect to the tested quality dimensions.

by recurring usability problems identified in evaluations of state-of-the-art
awareness systems. Based on these findings, it is argued that the limited success
of existing systems is mostly caused by conceptual shortcomings, which can be
overcome by adhering to a set of design recommendations elaborated in this paper.
To demonstrate the validity of this argumentation, the development and evaluation
of an ambient awareness system is illustrated.

text: This paper deals with a performance evaluation of a Bluetooth based industrial
real-time sensor actuator interface for stationary and mobile applications. The
investigations were carried out in harsh industrial environments in the presence
of parasitic machine emissions, intentional and unintentional interferers. The
air paths were obstructed by moving machine parts and daily work traffic. As a
result we can conclude, that wireless automation systems based on Bluetooth technology
are extremely reliable due to their inherent system features like adaptive frequency
hopping at high operating frequencies, error detection and correction. Neither
parasitic machine emissions nor other radio systems or transceiver movements can
impair the transmission, as long as distances are below 30 m

text: 'The manifolds of spaces and places we are entering, populating, transiently
crossing and eventually leaving (only to immerse in another subsequent context)
as part of our daily activities in our personal, public and professional lives
are undergoing a dramatic change. Although this change is taking place we are
aware of it only in a limited fashion due to its unobtrusive character as illustrated
in the statement by Streitz and Nixon (2005): “It seems like a paradox but it
will soon become reality: The rate at which computers disappear will be matched
by the rate at which information technology will increasingly permeate our environment
    and our lives”.'

text: 'In this paper, we address three major issues, look at their interaction and
combination and present our results on how to arrive at solutions for these issues.
The issues are: 1) supporting informal communication and atmosphere in organisations,
    2) the role and potential of ambient displays in future work environments, and
    3) the combination of mostly static artefacts that are integrated in the architectural
environment with mobile devices carried by people. Our results can be considered
as steps towards the design and realization of what we call “social architectural
spaces” in the context of future work environments. These environments will be
populated with a range of different smart artefacts that are designed to facilitate
awareness and notification as well as informal communication. We address a range
of spaces in office buildings including public spaces, e.g., in the hallway, the
foyer, and the cafeteria that have not been the focus of research so far. In particular,
we present two artefacts: the Hello.Wall, a wall-size large ambient display, and
the ViewPort, a mobile handheld device. They are interacting with each other via
wireless networks and different types of sensing technology. The artefacts and
the software were developed in the EU-funded “Disappearing Computer”- project
“Ambient Agoras: Dynamic Information Clouds in a Hybrid Worlds”.'
