Building on earlier work that employed Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) to manage a stationary battery based on real-time electricity prices and CO2 intensity signals, two industrial machines and one electric vehicle (EV) are now incorporated as additional shiftable loads. These new elements introduce further operational constraints while enhancing energy management flexibility. The framework employs an adjustable weighting factor λ to balance environmental impact and cost, and comparative analyses across three scenarios—battery-only, load-shifting-only, and combined—demonstrate nearly additive CO2 reductions alongside non-additive cost improvements, underscoring the synergistic potential for environmental benefits despite diminishing cost returns. Moreover, validation against dynamic programming confirms the MILP approach’s accuracy and computational efficiency.","lang":"eng"}],"author":[{"last_name":"Mousavi","full_name":"Mousavi, Seyed Davood","id":"79148","first_name":"Seyed Davood"},{"id":"46242","last_name":"Schulte","full_name":"Schulte, Thomas","first_name":"Thomas"}],"publication":"2025 5th International Conference on Electrical, Computer and Energy Technologies (ICECET)","corporate_editor":["University of Buner, Pakistan; Altinbas University, Türkiye","ICECCE"],"keyword":["Feeds","Antennas","System-on-chip","Application specific integrated circuits","Life cycle assessment","Product lifecycle management","Radio access networks","Regional area networks","Smart devices","OWL"],"title":"Enhanced Dynamic Optimization for CO2 Reduction and Cost Savings through Load Shifting in Smart Factories","user_id":"83781","doi":"10.1109/icecet63943.2025.11472530","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"conference":{"start_date":"2025-07-03","location":"Paris, France ","end_date":"2025-07-06","name":"5th International Conference on Electrical, Computer and Energy Technologies (ICECET)"},"type":"conference_editor_article","publication_status":"published","status":"public","date_created":"2026-04-10T07:15:51Z","department":[{"_id":"DEP6020"},{"_id":"DEP5022"}],"year":"2026","publisher":"IEEE","_id":"13678"},{"publication_status":"published","status":"public","has_accepted_license":"1","date_created":"2026-04-24T10:43:03Z","abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Urban Nature-based Solutions (NBS) are hypothesized to play an important role in promoting health, but most of the evidence is cross-sectional. This study aims to examine the effects of an integrated urban intervention with NBS at its core, implemented in the Nantes Nord district on residents' physical activity, social activity, environmental quality of life and social network as well as self-rated health and mental health. Analysing 902 observations from 2 datasets, pre- and post-intervention, we categorized 802 participants within Nantes Nord as the treatment group and 100 from other districts as the control group. We used Propensity Score Matching to adjust for selection bias in the dataset and Difference-in-Differences analysis to evaluate changes in physical activity, socializing activities, social networks, environmental quality of life, as well as self-rated health and mental health outcomes. Our results indicate that the urban tranformation with NBS at its core was associated with a significant increase in physical activity levels and to some extent in social ties. However, no immediate improvements were noticeable in socializing activities, environmental quality of life, or health outcomes, suggesting a latency in the broader effects of such interventions. This study underscores the immediate effects of the integrated NBS intervention on physical activity as a precursor to potentially more significant health benefits, which should be followed up with a more mid-to-long-term evaluation of such NBS interventions. Our findings advocate for the integration of connected green space corridors in urban planning to facilitate active lifestyles as sustainable commitments by local authorities and stakeholders."}],"department":[{"_id":"DEP1055"},{"_id":"DEP1600"}],"author":[{"orcid":"0000-0002-8841-9345","first_name":"Marcel","last_name":"Cardinali","full_name":"Cardinali, Marcel","id":"58462"},{"last_name":"Fleury-Bahi","full_name":"Fleury-Bahi, Ghozlane","first_name":"Ghozlane"},{"first_name":"Arnaud","last_name":"Sapin","full_name":"Sapin, Arnaud"},{"first_name":"Philippe","last_name":"Bodénan","full_name":"Bodénan, Philippe"},{"last_name":"Bechet","full_name":"Bechet, Beatrice","first_name":"Beatrice"},{"first_name":"Milena Tasheva","last_name":"Petrova","full_name":"Petrova, Milena Tasheva"},{"first_name":"Angel","full_name":"Burov, Angel","last_name":"Burov"},{"first_name":"Guido","last_name":"Ferilli","full_name":"Ferilli, Guido"}],"publication":"Quick And Easy Journal Title","year":"2026","keyword":["NBS","green space","Health","urban transformation","Impact Assessment","Propensity","Score Matching"],"place":"[Amsterdam] ","citation":{"van":"Cardinali M, Fleury-Bahi G, Sapin A, Bodénan P, Bechet B, Petrova MT, et al. The linear „Take-Make-Dispose“ model contributes significantly to resource consumption, waste generation, and CO2 emissions, with the construction sector responsible for 35% of global waste. The EU‘s Circular Economy Action Plan emphasizes designing products to minimize waste and retain resources, highlighting the importance of end-of-life (EoL) considerations in construction. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is employed to evaluate the environmental impacts of design decisions, particularly for stick curtain wall systems, which are widely used in office buildings. The research adopts a mixed methodology, combining literature review and design process analysis, focusing on frame materials (aluminum, steel, wood) and glass options. Three EoL scenarios—reuse, recycling, and demolition—are assessed to determine their impact on embodied carbon. The study is limited to office buildings in Germany, with a case study in Stuttgart, due to the prevalence of stick systems in such structures. Preliminary findings indicate that reuse scenarios generally have the lowest environmental impact, though outcomes vary based on material combinations. By systematically analyzing EoL scenarios, this research provides a framework for optimizing façade designs to enhance sustainability, reduce waste, and promote circularity in real-world construction projects."}],"has_accepted_license":"1","date_updated":"2026-01-23T09:42:42Z","issue":"4","publication_identifier":{"eissn":["2943-4467"],"issn":["2943-4459"]},"place":"Detmold","citation":{"ama":"Badr AWSM, Arztmann D, Starz F, Herrmann C. With an increasing number of connectors being used in machines, factories and vehicles, ensuring their reliability is crucial for comfort and safety alike. One of the key indicators of reliability is the lifetime of connectors. To evaluate the lifetime of electrical connectors, a testing method and a model for calculating their lifetime based on the test data were developed. The results from these tests were compared to failure analysis data from long-term field operations. The findings indicate that the laboratory tests can accurately reproduce the main failures observed in the field. However, such lifetime tests can be time- and labor-intensive. To address this challenge, a data-driven method is proposed that predicts the lifetime of electrical connectors using statistical analysis of electrical contact resistance data collected from short-term tests. The predictions from this method were compared to actual results obtained from long-term tests. A strong correlation was observed between the contact resistance development in short-term tests and the number of failures in later stages of testing. Thus, apart from predicting the lifetime of connectors, this method can also be applied for failure prognosis in real-time operations.","lang":"eng"}],"issue":"12","date_updated":"2025-06-25T13:03:28Z","publication_identifier":{"eissn":["2075-1702 "]},"quality_controlled":"1","place":"Basel","citation":{"ama":"Song J, Shukla AR, Probst R. With their published recommendation on environmental footprint methods, the European Commission provides a framework to assess the PEF for every product in a company. Since there is a high probability that the PEF will be mandatory for companies shortly, it is crucial that this recommendation guides companies and mainly technical employees through all phases of the PEF and enables them to execute a PEF study correctly. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the process of calculating a PEF for a product critically. A PEF study is conducted on a smart luminaire with the software program OpenLCA. The use case concludes that many aspects of the PEF still need to be clarified. Especially the calculation methods behind every impact category need to be more transparent. Further, a comparison of the use case with a provided tutorial from OpenLCA is made. The comparison shows that no information is available on how to model the end-of-life and the use stages, which are mandatory in a PEF study. (c) 2023 The Authors. Security risk assessments play a major role to ensure a secure operation of Industrial Automation and Control Systems (IACSs) but are mostly neglected due to missing resources and a lack of human experts for the sophisticated manual tasks. Therefore, a method for information and process modelling regarding the automation of security risk assessments has been previously designed, but not yet evaluated. This work in progress begins the evaluation of the automated security risk assessment concept by investigating the related work and identifying the main deficits. The results include a requirements analysis for the verification and an outlook towards future evaluation aspects.","lang":"eng"}],"keyword":["Industry 4.0","Security","Risk Assessment","Automation","Requirements","Evaluation","Verification"],"publication":"2024 IEEE 20th International Conference on Factory Communication Systems (WFCS)","author":[{"last_name":"Ehrlich","full_name":"Ehrlich, Marco","id":"61562","first_name":"Marco"},{"full_name":"Lukas, Georg","last_name":"Lukas","first_name":"Georg"},{"id":"1486","last_name":"Trsek","full_name":"Trsek, Henning","first_name":"Henning","orcid":"0000-0002-0133-0656"},{"first_name":"Jürgen","id":"1899","full_name":"Jasperneite, Jürgen","last_name":"Jasperneite"},{"last_name":"Kastner","full_name":"Kastner, Wolfgang","first_name":"Wolfgang"},{"full_name":"Diedrich, Christian","last_name":"Diedrich","first_name":"Christian"}],"citation":{"van":"Ehrlich M, Lukas G, Trsek H, Jasperneite J, Kastner W, Diedrich C. Addressing the growing need for sustainable and economically viable energy solutions amidst the global urgency of climate change mitigation, the proposed approach is based on dynamic energy management techniques that minimize dependence on grid electricity, which can fluctuate between energy import and export. A flexible cost function is developed to simultaneously account for CO2 emissions and electricity prices, enabling a balance between environmental impact and operational costs. The optimization framework employs Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) to derive the optimal energy management strategy, showcasing significant potential for reducing both CO2 emissions and electricity costs. Although the methodology is demonstrated in a specific industrial setting, its flexible design ensures applicability across various energy profiles and operational scenarios, making it relevant for a wide range of industrial applications."}],"department":[{"_id":"DEP6020"},{"_id":"DEP5022"}],"author":[{"first_name":"Seyed Davood","id":"79148","full_name":"Mousavi, Seyed Davood","last_name":"Mousavi"},{"first_name":"Martin","id":"52308","last_name":"Griese","full_name":"Griese, Martin"},{"full_name":"Schulte, Thomas","last_name":"Schulte","id":"46242","first_name":"Thomas"}],"year":"2024","keyword":["CO2 Reduction","Electricity Cost Minimization","Life Cycle Assessment","MILP","Smart-E-Factory","Dynamic Energy Management"],"publication":"2024 International Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering Researches (ICECER)","place":"[Piscataway, NJ]","conference":{"start_date":"2024-12-04","end_date":"2024-12-06","location":"Gaborone, Botswana ","name":"2024 International Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering Researches (ICECER)"},"citation":{"ama":"Mousavi SD, Griese M, Schulte T. <i>Dynamic Optimization of CO2 Emissions and Electricity Costs in Smart Factories</i>. In our previous work, a correlation between the contact resistance developments in the early stages of lifetime tests of electrical connectors with the final results was established using a data driven statistical process based on probability distribution. Also, state of health indicators for prognosis of lifetime were introduced. In this work, the state of health indicators have been optimized. The sensitivity analysis is performed with regards to the selection of the appropriate amount of test data based on test duration for the reliable prognosis of the state of health and the characteristic lifetime. Through this the possibility of further reduction of test duration required for the reliable prognosis of state of health is investigated. Based on the results of analysis, a guideline for the determination of the duration of lifetime tests which lead to a reliable prediction of lifetime of connectors can be provided. Also, an assessment of the state of art in the prognosis of the lifetime of electrical connectors has been presented."}],"publisher":"IEEE","_id":"11360","page":"200-208","type":"conference_editor_article","conference":{"start_date":"2023-10-04","end_date":"2023-10-11","location":"Seattle","name":"68th Holm Conference on Electrical Contacts (HOLM)"},"year":"2023","status":"public","publication_status":"published","date_created":"2024-04-18T10:11:50Z"},{"type":"scientific_journal_article","department":[{"_id":"DEP4000"}],"year":"2023","intvolume":" 95","publication_status":"published","status":"public","volume":95,"date_created":"2024-04-26T06:52:48Z","external_id":{"isi":["001073579300001"]},"publisher":"Wiley","_id":"11385","page":"1960-1969","issue":"12","date_updated":"2025-06-26T07:50:29Z","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0009-286X"],"eissn":["1522-2640"]},"quality_controlled":"1","place":"Weinheim","citation":{"ieee":"P. Increasingly, the research community calls for future-oriented skills as well as attitudes and values as underlying implicit concepts in order to meet the needs of today’s complex demands. These skills and implicit concepts include responsibility, inclusiveness, reflexivity, anticipation, data literacy or digital and interdisciplinary working. Some of them are based on facts and are therefore teachable, while others seem to be a matter of personal attitude and socialization and are therefore difficult to convey. In this paper we suggest educators to change their specialized knowledge-teaching settings into transdisciplinary learning contexts [1] and thus enabling transformative, situated, experiential and informal learning. We provide theoretical examples in which these didactic methodologies seem to be effective in order to impart these skills and reinforce the underlying implicit concepts. We will dive deeper into these arguments during the conference, while participants are encouraged to discuss the various elements that influence the concepts in the context of transdisciplinary learning. This raises the need for new security engineering concepts that cover the increasing complexity and frequency of mandatory security risk assessments. In contrast, the current standardization landscape used for the assessment of these systems only offers abstract, static, manual, and resource-intensive procedures. Therefore, this work proposes a method that further specifies the IEC 62443 aiming to automate the security risk assessments in such a way that manual efforts can be reduced and a consistent quality can be achieved. The methodology is presented using network segmentation as a guiding example and consists of four main steps: Information collection based on a process analysis, information formalisation with a semi-formal model, information usage applying first order logic to extract expert knowledge, and information access using the concept of the digital twin. In addition, the applicability of the IEC 62443 standard to the risk assessment of modular manufacturing systems is evaluated.","lang":"eng"}],"author":[{"last_name":"Ehrlich","full_name":"Ehrlich, Marco","id":"61562","first_name":"Marco"},{"id":"65130","full_name":"Bröring, Andre","last_name":"Bröring","first_name":"Andre"},{"full_name":"Diedrich, Christian","last_name":"Diedrich","first_name":"Christian"},{"full_name":"Jasperneite, Jürgen","last_name":"Jasperneite","id":"1899","first_name":"Jürgen"}],"publication":"Automatisierungstechnik : AT ","keyword":["sasset administration shell","automation","information model","modular manufacturing system","risk assessment","security"]},{"year":"2023","department":[{"_id":"DEP1500"}],"volume":13,"date_created":"2026-03-25T13:36:10Z","status":"public","publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 13","type":"scientific_journal_article","extern":"1","_id":"13581","pmid":"1","publisher":"Wiley","external_id":{"pmid":["37559422"],"isi":["001044780200001"]},"publication":"Brain and Behavior","keyword":["eating disorders","physical activity","psychopathology","psychotherapy","symptom assessment"],"author":[{"first_name":"Lina","full_name":"Amin, Lina","last_name":"Amin"},{"first_name":"Georg","orcid":"0000-0002-9529-2215","id":"85780","full_name":"Halbeisen, Georg","last_name":"Halbeisen"},{"first_name":"Karsten","full_name":"Braks, Karsten","last_name":"Braks"},{"last_name":"Huber","full_name":"Huber, Thomas J.J.","first_name":"Thomas J.J."},{"first_name":"Georgios","last_name":"Paslakis","full_name":"Paslakis, Georgios"}],"article_number":"e3220","abstract":[{"text":"ObjectiveMany people, including patients with eating disorders (EDs), experience an increased urge for physical activity. \"Trait\"-like activity in patients with EDs is assessed by existing questionnaires, but there are few clinically validated assessments of a \"state\" urge to be physically active. Here, we developed and validated the State Urge to be Physically Active-Questionnaire (SUPA-Q). MethodsAfter developing and piloting the items, N = 126 patients with EDs (mostly anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa) took part in our mixed-longitudinal validation study with one primary assessment for all patients and a secondary assessment for a subsample of patients. Cronbach's & alpha; and split-half-methods served as measures of consistency and reliability. Correlations with other questionnaires were used to determine convergent and divergent validity, and confirmatory factor analysis was used for investigating factorial validity. We used paired-samples t-tests for repeated assessments to investigate change sensitivity. ResultsWe found the SUPA-Q to be highly consistent, and reliable and to demonstrate convergent, divergent, and factorial validity. The comparison of SUPA-Q scores from repeated assessments within a subsample of patients demonstrated the questionnaire's change sensitivity, Cohen's d = 0.48. Moreover, an increase in SUPA-Q scores was associated with a less positive mood, more anxiety, more body dissatisfaction, more tenseness, less feelings of control, and more stress. DiscussionThe newly developed SUPA-Q may help to accentuate the necessity to evaluate and address the acute urge to engage in physical activity in patients with EDs in clinical practice and ultimately support tailoring treatments to patients' unique symptom patterns. The key to this transformation is end-to-end digitalization. Our approach aims to achieve a new architectural quality by linking digitized design tools, ecological and environmentally friendly concepts, and serial production processes. Against this background, two research projects were advanced to enable adaptive prefabricated systems based on combined additive manufacturing. Two case studies illustrate the research results. In the first, a digital assessment tool is being developed to improve planning processes. With the tool, standardized yet adaptive constructions can be evaluated according to their sustainability impact in an early design phase. The second approach focuses on delivering a customized material composition realized with additive manufacturing methods. In an automated co-extrusion process, the dimensions and building-physical quality of story-high wall panels (floor-to-ceiling) can be adapted to individual requirements. The optimum balance of standardization vs individualized building solutions will introduce a novel flexibility for the architectural design process as well as a higher production efficiency. This strategy of individualized standardization is based on integrative collaboration and visionary research."}],"author":[{"last_name":"Albus","full_name":"Albus, Jutta","first_name":"Jutta"},{"id":"90080","last_name":"Hollmann-Schröter","full_name":"Hollmann-Schröter, Kirsten","first_name":"Kirsten","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2959-0211"}],"article_number":"012071","publication":"IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science","keyword":["Individualized standardization","case study","lightweight aerogel concrete technology","adaptability","sustainability assessment"]},{"language":[{"iso":"ger"}],"user_id":"83781","title":"Das Kriechende Netzblatt Goodyera repens (L.) This model enables the evaluation of failure rates gained in highly accelerated life tests (HALT) and considers thermal and vibrational loading. However, since the initial study only covered a small set of test parameters, further study of the model is required. Previous studies have sufficiently investigated the influence of the vibration test mode on the failure rate of electrical connectors. Therefore, this study now focuses on the influence of the thermal cycling test. A commonly used automotive connector is chosen and subjected to stresses in HALT covering various upper temperatures, test durations and thermal cycling frequencies. Additionally, the principles of determining the coefficient of temperature difference and the coefficient of the thermal cycling frequency are presented, since these coefficients are connector specific and required for the acceleration model. Based on the numbers of failures in test, the influence of the various thermal cycling tests is discussed, and the coefficients are calculated for the chosen connector. In conclusion a guideline to select an appropriate upper temperature and test duration in order to compare the reliability of different electrical connectors is provided.","lang":"eng"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0026-2714"]},"issue":"November 2022","date_updated":"2024-08-05T07:33:56Z","citation":{"van":"Krüger K, Song J. Advanced planning and scheduling (APS) systems provide these capabilities and are an extension for ERP systems. However, when integrating an APS and ERP system, the ERP data frequently lacks quality, hindering the APS system from working as required. This paper introduces a data quality (DQ) assessment framework that employs a Bayesian Network (BN) to perform quick DQ assessments based on expert interviews and DQ measurements with actual ERP data. We explain the BN’s functionality, design, and validation and show how using the perceived DQ of experts and a semi-supervised learning algorithm improves the BN’s predictions over time. We discuss applying our framework in an APS system implementation project involving an APS system provider and a medium-sized manufacturer of hydraulic cylinders. Despite considering the DQ assessment framework in such a specific context, it is not restricted to a particular domain. We close by discussing the framework’s limits, particularly the BN as a DQ assessment methodology and future works to improve its performance.","lang":"eng"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["1877-0509 "]},"date_updated":"2024-08-06T11:45:41Z","citation":{"ama":"Herrmann JP, Tackenberg S, Padoano E, et al. In this study, we develop and assess a one-dimensional lake model and apply it to 32 lakes from a global observatory network. The data set included lakes over broad ranges in latitude, climatic zones, size, residence time, mixing regime and trophic level. Model performance was evaluated using several error assessment metrics, and a sensitivity analysis was conducted for nine parameters that governed the surface heat exchange and mixing efficiency. There was low correlation between input data uncertainty and model performance and predictions of temperature were less sensitive to model parameters than prediction of thermocline depth and Schmidt stability. The study provides guidance to where the general model approach and associated assumptions work, and cases where adjustments to model parameterisations and/or structure are required."}],"author":[{"first_name":"Louise C.","full_name":"Bruce, Louise C.","last_name":"Bruce"},{"first_name":"Marieke A.","last_name":"Frassl","full_name":"Frassl, Marieke A."},{"full_name":"Arhonditsis, George B.","last_name":"Arhonditsis","first_name":"George B."},{"last_name":"Gal","full_name":"Gal, Gideon","first_name":"Gideon"},{"last_name":"Hamilton","full_name":"Hamilton, David P.","first_name":"David P."},{"first_name":"Paul C.","full_name":"Hanson, Paul C.","last_name":"Hanson"},{"last_name":"Hetherington","full_name":"Hetherington, Amy L.","first_name":"Amy L."},{"first_name":"John M.","full_name":"Melack, John M.","last_name":"Melack"},{"full_name":"Read, Jordan S.","last_name":"Read","first_name":"Jordan S."},{"first_name":"Karsten","full_name":"Rinke, Karsten","last_name":"Rinke"},{"last_name":"Rigosi","full_name":"Rigosi, Anna","first_name":"Anna"},{"first_name":"Dennis","full_name":"Trolle, Dennis","last_name":"Trolle"},{"last_name":"Winslow","full_name":"Winslow, Luke","first_name":"Luke"},{"full_name":"Adrian, Rita","last_name":"Adrian","first_name":"Rita"},{"first_name":"Ana I.","full_name":"Ayala, Ana I.","last_name":"Ayala"},{"full_name":"Bocaniov, Serghei A.","last_name":"Bocaniov","first_name":"Serghei A."},{"full_name":"Boehrer, Bertram","last_name":"Boehrer","first_name":"Bertram"},{"first_name":"Casper","full_name":"Boon, Casper","last_name":"Boon"},{"last_name":"Brookes","full_name":"Brookes, Justin D.","first_name":"Justin D."},{"last_name":"Bueche","full_name":"Bueche, Thomas","first_name":"Thomas"},{"first_name":"Brendan D.","last_name":"Busch","full_name":"Busch, Brendan D."},{"full_name":"Copetti, Diego","last_name":"Copetti","first_name":"Diego"},{"last_name":"Cortés","full_name":"Cortés, Alicia","first_name":"Alicia"},{"full_name":"de Eyto, Elvira","last_name":"de Eyto","first_name":"Elvira"},{"first_name":"J. Additive manufacturing is a technology that produces parts layer by layer and thus enables the manufacturing of any complex parts at nearly no extra costs. A topology optimization enhances the part’s\r\nperformance for their special purpose. The results are often complex bionic structures that cannot be produced with conventional manufacturing technologies. Dadurch wird die Konsolidierung der öffentlichen Finanzen nochmals erschwert, sodass kein Spielraum für Steuersenkungen best","lang":"eng"}]},{"_id":"8176","page":"239-249","publisher":"IWA","year":"2007","department":[{"_id":"DEP8010"}],"date_created":"2022-05-11T20:08:01Z","volume":56,"status":"public","publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 56","type":"scientific_journal_article","extern":"1","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":" https://doi.org/10.2166/wst.2007.577","user_id":"83781","title":"EU Demonstration project for separate discharge and treatment of urine, faeces and greywater - Part I: Results","keyword":["Cost calculation","fertiliser","gravity separation toilets","life-cycle-assessment","thermophile digester","urine treatment","vacuum separation toilets"],"publication":"Water Science & Technology ","author":[{"last_name":"Peter-Fröhlich","full_name":"Peter-Fröhlich, Anton","first_name":"Anton"},{"first_name":"Ludwig","last_name":"Pawlowski","full_name":"Pawlowski, Ludwig"},{"last_name":"Bonhomme","full_name":"Bonhomme, Andre","first_name":"Andre"},{"id":"11354","full_name":"Oldenburg, Martin","last_name":"Oldenburg","first_name":"Martin"}],"abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"The main aim of this EU demonstration project was to test two new sanitation concepts to determine if these concepts are more sustainable, compared with the conventional sanitation system, particularly with regard to nutrient recycling. Two different sanitation concepts were tested. One concept comprised the use of gravity separation toilets, the other used vacuum separation toilets. Results from a life-cycle-assessment investigation show that the new sanitation concepts are more sustainable. A cost analysis for an existing residential area did not prove lower costs for the new sanitation concepts in this special case. The experience from this demonstration project shows that prior to a widespread use of the new sanitation concepts, several improvements have to be made. One important issue is the improvement of separation toilets. Since nutrient recycling, water saving and reuse as well energy reduction become more and more important, further research should be undertaken in this field."}],"publication_identifier":{"eissn":["1996-9732"],"issn":["0273-1223"]},"date_updated":"2026-07-24T12:45:07Z","issue":"5","citation":{"chicago-de":"Peter-Fröhlich, Anton, Ludwig Pawlowski, Andre Bonhomme und Martin Oldenburg. 2007.
