As climate change continues to unfold, understanding the potential evaporative water losses from lakes becomes crucial for effective water management strategies. Here we investigate the impacts of climate change on the evaporation rates of 23 European lakes and reservoirs of varying size during the warm season (July–September). To assess the evaporation trends, we employ a 12-member ensemble of model projections, utilizing three one-dimensional process-based lake models. These lake models were driven by bias-corrected climate simulations from four General Circulation Models (GCMs), considering both a historical (1970–2005) and future (2006–2099) period. Our findings reveal a consistent projection of increased warm-season evaporation across all lakes this century, though the magnitude varies depending on specific factors. By the end of this century (2070–2099), we estimate a 21%, 30% and 42% average increase in evaporation rates in the studied European lakes under RCP (Representative Concentration Pathway) 2.6, 6.0 and 8.5, respectively. Moreover, future projections of the relationship between precipitation (P) and evaporation (E) in the studied lakes, suggest that P-E will decrease this century, likely leading to a deficit in the availability of surface water. The projected increases in evaporation rates underscore the significance of adapting strategic management approaches for European lakes to cope with the far-reaching consequences of climate change."}],"keyword":["Multi-model","Water availability","Europe","Ensemble","Lake evaporation","Latent heat flux"],"isi":"1","publication":"Climatic Change","doi":"10.1007/s10584-024-03830-2","issue":"12","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0165-0009"],"eissn":["1573-1480"]},"publication_status":"published","title":"Increasing warm-season evaporation rates across European lakes under climate change","department":[{"_id":"DEP8022"}],"intvolume":" 177","quality_controlled":"1","publisher":"Springer","citation":{"chicago-de":"La Fuente, Sofia, Eleanor Jennings, John D. We present a dual ensemble workflow coupling climate models with lake models. We used a large set of simulations across multiple domains, multi‐scenario, and multi GCM‐ RCM combinations from CORDEX data. We forced a set of multiple hydrodynamic lake models by these multiple climate simulations to explore climate change impacts on lakes. We also quantified the contributions from the different models to the overall uncertainty. We employed this workflow to investigate the effects of climate change on Lake Sevan (Armenia). We predicted for the end of the 21st century, under RCP 8.5, a sharp increase in surface temperature and substantial bottom warming , longer stratification periods (+55 days) and disappearance of ice cover leading to a shift in mixing regime. Increased insufficient cooling during warmer winters points to the vulnerability of Lake Sevan to climate change. Our workflow leverages the strengths of multiple models at several levels of the model chain to provide a more robust projection and at the same time a better uncertainty estimate that accounts for the contributions of the different model levels to overall uncertainty. Although for specific variables, for example, summer bottom temperature, single lake models may perform better, the full ensemble provides a robust estimate of thermal dynamics that has a high transferability so that our workflow can be a blueprint for climate impact studies in other systems."}],"pmid":"1","place":"New York, NY","author":[{"first_name":"Muhammed","last_name":"Shikhani","full_name":"Shikhani, Muhammed"},{"full_name":"Feldbauer, Johannes","last_name":"Feldbauer","first_name":"Johannes"},{"first_name":"Robert","full_name":"Ladwig, Robert","last_name":"Ladwig"},{"last_name":"Mercado‐Bettín","full_name":"Mercado‐Bettín, Daniel","first_name":"Daniel"},{"full_name":"Moore, Tadhg N.","last_name":"Moore","first_name":"Tadhg N."},{"first_name":"Artur","full_name":"Gevorgyan, Artur","last_name":"Gevorgyan"},{"last_name":"Misakyan","full_name":"Misakyan, Amalya","first_name":"Amalya"},{"full_name":"Mi, Chenxi","last_name":"Mi","first_name":"Chenxi"},{"first_name":"Martin","full_name":"Schultze, Martin","last_name":"Schultze"},{"full_name":"Boehrer, Bertram","last_name":"Boehrer","first_name":"Bertram"},{"last_name":"Shatwell","full_name":"Shatwell, Tom","id":"86424","orcid":"0000-0002-4520-7916","first_name":"Tom"},{"full_name":"Barfus, Klemens","last_name":"Barfus","first_name":"Klemens"},{"full_name":"Rinke, Karsten","last_name":"Rinke","first_name":"Karsten"}],"status":"public","date_created":"2025-04-24T06:41:06Z","external_id":{"isi":["001370328800001"],"pmid":["39582854"]},"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"date_updated":"2025-06-25T13:09:00Z","year":"2024","user_id":"83781","citation":{"ieee":"M. Efficient optimization of multiple objectives such as process time, viable cell density, number of operating steps & cultivation scales, required medium, amount of product as well as product quality depicts a promising approach. This contribution presents a workflow which couples uncertainty-based upstream simulation and Bayes optimization using Gaussian processes. Its application is demonstrated in a simulation case study for a relevant industrial task in process development, the design of a robust cell culture expansion process (seed train), meaning that despite uncertainties and variabilities concerning cell growth, low variations of viable cell density during the seed train are obtained. Compared to a non-optimized reference seed train, the optimized process showed much lower deviation rates regarding viable cell densities (<10% instead of 41.7%) using five or four shake flask scales and seed train duration could be reduced by 56 h from 576 h to 520 h. Overall, it is shown that applying Bayes optimization allows for optimization of a multi-objective optimization function with several optimizable input variables and under a considerable amount of constraints with a low computational effort. This approach provides the potential to be used in the form of a decision tool, e.g., for the choice of an optimal and robust seed train design or for further optimization tasks within process development.","lang":"eng"}],"type":"book_chapter","_id":"10193","page":"21-48","volume":"special issue","author":[{"last_name":"Hernández Rodriguez","full_name":"Hernández Rodriguez, Tanja","id":"52466","first_name":"Tanja"},{"first_name":"Anton","full_name":"Sekulic, Anton","last_name":"Sekulic"},{"id":"71761","full_name":"Lange-Hegermann, Markus","last_name":"Lange-Hegermann","first_name":"Markus"},{"first_name":"Björn","last_name":"Frahm","full_name":"Frahm, Björn","id":"45666"}],"status":"public","place":"Basel","publication_status":"published","publication_identifier":{"eisbn":["978-3-0365-5209-5"],"eissn":["2227-9717"],"isbn":["978-3-0365-5210-1"]},"department":[{"_id":"DEP4000"}],"title":"Designing robust biotechnological processes regarding variabilities using multi-objective optimization applied to a biopharmaceutical seed train design","doi":"https://doi.org/10.3390/pr10050883","publication":"Bioprocess Systems Engineering Applications in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing","keyword":["Gaussian processes","Bayes optimization","Pareto optimization","multi-objective","cell culture","seed train"],"citation":{"chicago-de":"Hernández Rodriguez, Tanja, Anton Sekulic, Markus Lange-Hegermann und Björn Frahm. 2022. It describes the fit between elements of a sociotechnical system which is a prerequisite to successfully cooperate towards a common goal. For at least three decades, cognitive compatibility is of increasing importance. It describes the fit of externally presented information, information processing, and the required motor action. However, with increasing system complexity, probability for incompatibility increases, too, leading to time losses, errors and overall degraded performance. The elimination of cognitive incompatibilities through ergonomic measures at the workplace requires a lot of creativity and effort. Using practical examples from mixed-model assembly, improved information management and the use of informational assistance systems are discussed as promising ergonomic approaches. The ultimate goal is to avoid cognitive overload, for example in part picking or assembly tools choosing. To find a fit between externally mediated work instructions via displays and the subjectively used internal models and competencies is a challenging task. Only if this fit is given the system is perceived as beneficial. To achieve this, the assistance system should be configurable to fit individual needs as far as possible. Successful system design requires early participation and comprehensive integration of the assistance systems into the existing IT infrastructure.\r\n\r\nPractical relevance: Varied manual assembly requires a high degree of cognitive work. A rise in complexity of the assembly task increases the risk that cognitive incompatibility and thus cognitive overload will occur more frequently. It is shown that such unhealthy conditions can be countered by better information presentation and by the use of individually adaptable informational assistance systems."}]},{"year":"2019","date_updated":"2023-08-14T13:16:56Z","user_id":"83781","corporate_editor":["Institut für Automation und Kommunikation e.V."],"date_created":"2021-06-22T09:34:20Z","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://tydirium.init.th-owl.de/s/ErCo2mjFdJQDoXN?dir=undefined&path=%2FKommA%202019%2FPaper%2FSession1_Funk&openfile=7286659"}],"language":[{"iso":"ger"}],"place":"Magdeburg","status":"public","author":[{"full_name":"Fliedner, Niels Hendrik","id":"57956","last_name":"Fliedner","first_name":"Niels Hendrik","orcid":"0000-0003-0484-1328"},{"first_name":"Roland","last_name":"Heß","full_name":"Heß, Roland"},{"last_name":"Witte","id":"1605","full_name":"Witte, Stefan","first_name":"Stefan"}],"extern":"1","type":"conference","_id":"6003","abstract":[{"lang":"ger","text":"In industriellen Szenarien wächst seit Längerem der Bedarf an drahtloser und zuverlässiger Kommunikation. In the so-called multi-product- or mixed-model-assembly, the employee has to constantly make choices between different alternatives. This concerns e. g. parts to be assembled, tools, fixing methods or materials that can be processed in very different combinations. From the perspective of a worker the assembly process becomes a continuous choice process, setting increasingly higher informational and cognitive demands and increasing mental strain. This has a negative impact on labor productivity. Information Assistance Systems are considered appropriate tools to take moderating influence on this development. However, it should be considered how complex demands are as well as how pronounced subjective resources and mental strain are. Based on these considerations, recommendations for the design of information assistance systems are derived.\r\n\r\nPractical Relevance: Manufacturing industry faces the demanding task of producing more and more product variants even in manual assembly. As a result, assembly workers have to process more information and are therefore exposed to greater stress. In order to avoid the resulting loss of labor productivity, assembly systems are increasingly integrating informational assistance systems that, on the one hand, support cognitive processing and, on the other hand, reduce stress. Various design recommendations are given for such informational assistance systems.","lang":"eng"}],"place":"Berlin Heidelberg","project":[{"name":"Montexas 4.0","_id":"FBB6D104-44D9-11E9-AA25-B54CDB794CE1"}],"status":"public","author":[{"first_name":"Manfred","last_name":"Bornewasser","full_name":"Bornewasser, Manfred"},{"id":"49010","full_name":"Hinrichsen, Sven","last_name":"Hinrichsen","first_name":"Sven"},{"first_name":"Dominic","full_name":"Bläsing, Dominic","last_name":"Bläsing"}],"date_created":"2018-11-06T13:25:05Z","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs41449-018-0123-x#Abs2"}],"language":[{"iso":"ger"}],"related_material":{"link":[{"url":"https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs41449-018-0123-x#Abs2","relation":"contains"}]},"date_updated":"2023-03-15T13:49:39Z","year":2018,"user_id":"49010"},{"publication":"8th International Conference on Production Engineering and Management","conference":{"name":"8th International Conference","end_date":"2018-10-05","start_date":"2018-10-04","location":"Lemgo"},"publication_identifier":{"isbn":["978-3-946856-03-0"]},"publication_status":"published","title":"Dissimilar Metal Joints - Laser Based Manufacturing Processes for Components of Tomorrow","department":[{"_id":"DEP1306"},{"_id":"DEP7037"}],"keyword":["Dissimilar metal joints","Laser processes","Multi-material components"],"citation":{"short":"A. It is the samefor the material flow system with automated guided vehicles (AGVs). To realize the flexibility and scalability, it is recommended to decentralized control the vehicles. As an attempt, a concept of swarm intelligence with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is proposed and introduced in this article. The concept is supposed to be used for automated guided vehicle systems in which objects have to be transported from place to place. Therefore the object has to be self-organized and has to manage its own transport. In this context the vehicles have to choose the most optimal transportation. Swarm intelligence is a topic which deserves a high level of attention as a method to realize high flexibility and scalability.","lang":"eng"}],"type":"conference","_id":"593","page":"133-143","user_id":"45673","year":2016,"date_updated":"2023-03-15T13:50:03Z","related_material":{"link":[{"url":"https://www.hs-owl.de/fileadmin/diman/Veroeffentlichungen/PEM_2016_Proceeding_2016_09_14_Inhaltsnavigation.pdf","relation":"contains"}]},"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"main_file_link":[{"url":"https://www.hs-owl.de/fileadmin/diman/Veroeffentlichungen/PEM_2016_Proceeding_2016_09_14_Inhaltsnavigation.pdf","open_access":"1"}],"date_created":"2019-02-18T15:32:10Z","corporate_editor":["Department of Production Engineering and Management","Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe"]},{"date_updated":"2023-07-12T09:23:15Z","year":"2016","user_id":"83781","date_created":"2023-06-30T06:30:28Z","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"place":"Cham","extern":"1","author":[{"first_name":"Stephan","last_name":"Lier","full_name":"Lier, Stephan"},{"first_name":"Maria","full_name":"Brenda, Maria","last_name":"Brenda"},{"full_name":"Cornel, Peter","last_name":"Cornel","first_name":"Peter"},{"full_name":"Deffner, Juta","last_name":"Deffner","first_name":"Juta"},{"first_name":"Jörg","last_name":"Felmeden","full_name":"Felmeden, Jörg","id":"81335"},{"last_name":"Jokisch","full_name":"Jokisch, Alexander","first_name":"Alexander"},{"last_name":"Kluge","full_name":"Kluge, Thomas","first_name":"Thomas"},{"first_name":"Katherina","last_name":"Müller","full_name":"Müller, Katherina"},{"last_name":"Röhrig","full_name":"Röhrig, Julian","first_name":"Julian"},{"first_name":"Vanessa","full_name":"Stibitz, Vanessa","last_name":"Stibitz"},{"first_name":"Wilhelm","last_name":"Urban","full_name":"Urban, Wilhelm"}],"status":"public","type":"book_chapter","_id":"10066","page":"683–717","abstract":[{"text":"Namibia is the most arid country in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Cuvelai-Etosha Basin (CEB) in central northern Namibia in particular is experiencing various ecological and social-ecological challenges such as high climate variability, saline groundwater, dependence on Angola for freshwater supply, high population growth and density, and increasing urbanisation. These challenges make water supply and management difficult and threaten the livelihood of the local population and the health of the ecosystem. Facing up to these challenges, the German-Namibian research project CuveWaters has developed, adapted and set up different technologies as pilot plant s. The Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) concept of CuveWaters is based on a multi-resource-mix in which water is obtained from different sources (rainwater, floodwater, groundwater and wastewater) and used for various purposes. High quality water is used as drinking water; water of a relatively low quality is used for irrigation. In cooperation with the residents of four villages and one small town, the project partners are implementing different technologies to collect and store, produce, treat and reuse water. The implemented technologies are rain- and floodwater harvesting, groundwater desalination, and the combination of sanitation, wastewater treatment and water reuse. The aim is to improve peoples’ livelihood through research on innovative and adapted solutions which contribute to a successful and adapted application of IWRM. To this end, the project integrates science, technology and societal aspects in a transdisciplinary research approach by linking scientific knowledge from natural, engineering and social sciences with the everyday practices and know-how of the stakeholders involved. Thus, the technical aspects are complemented by a wide range of societal and scientific components, such as capacity development, monitoring, participation or knowledge management. These ensure societal embedding of the technologies and knowledge transfer. This paper will illustrate the transdisciplinary approach, implemented technologies and accompanying measures as well as key results.","lang":"eng"}],"editor":[{"first_name":"Dietrich","full_name":"Borchardt, Dietrich","last_name":"Borchardt"}],"keyword":["Multi-resource-mix","Rainwater and floodwater harvesting","Solar-coupled groundwater desalination","Sanitation and water reuse","Transdisciplinarity"],"publication":"Integrated Water Resources Management: Concept, Research and Implementation","doi":"https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-25071-7_26","publication_status":"published","publication_identifier":{"eisbn":["978-3-319-25071-7"],"isbn":["978-3-319-79729-8","978-3-319-25069-4"]},"department":[{"_id":"DEP3021"}],"title":"From the Concept to the Tap - Integrated Water Resources Managment in Northern Namibia","publisher":"Springer ","citation":{"chicago":"Lier, Stephan, Maria Brenda, Peter Cornel, Juta Deffner, Jörg Felmeden, Alexander Jokisch, Thomas Kluge, et al. “From the Concept to the Tap - Integrated Water Resources Managment in Northern Namibia.” In Integrated Water Resources Management: Concept, Research and Implementation, edited by Dietrich Borchardt, 683–717. The general research approach is based on the idea of using data mining processes and techniques of industry statistics to find rare and hidden patterns behind failures of complex components. A case study will be applied to illustrate how the technique is carried out and where the limits of this approach occur. The case study deals with a component supplier of printing machines, which received an increasing number of client complaints, all related to one distinct problem. The observed failures seem to occur only among clients with very high quality standards. The affected component undergoes a very complex production process with several steps in different departments. Every single production unit records data information from multiple process variables and at different points in time. In the beginning there was no understanding of the failure causes in production at all. Therefore a huge amount of production data had to be analyzed to find the pattern that discloses the failure.\r\nThe data mining process starts with a first step in which the given data sets are prepared and then cleaned. Followed up by building a prediction model. The aim is to detect the root causes for failures and to predict potential failures in affected components. This paper shows how to use data mining to get the answer on pressing production failures.\r\n"}],"_id":"597","page":"163-174","type":"conference","status":"public","author":[{"first_name":"Eva","last_name":"Scheideler","id":"61522","full_name":"Scheideler, Eva"},{"first_name":"Andrea","full_name":"Ahlemeyer-Stubbe, Andrea","last_name":"Ahlemeyer-Stubbe"}],"place":"Lemgo"},{"citation":{"ieee":"A. To create an effective and efficient knowledge discovery process, it is important to support common data manipulation tasks by creating quick, responsive and intuitive interaction methods. In this paper we describe some methods for interactive longitudinal data visualization with focus on the usage of mobile multi-touch devices as interaction medium, based on our design and development experiences. We argue that when it comes to longitudinal data this device category offers remarkable additional interaction benefits compared to standard point-and-click desktop computer devices. An important advantage of multi-touch devices arises when interacting with particularly large longitudinal data sets: Complex, coupled interactions such as zooming into a region and scrolling around almost simultaneously is more easily achieved with the possibilities of a multi-touch device than compared to a regular mouse-based interaction device."}],"place":"Cham","status":"public","author":[{"last_name":"Holzinger","full_name":"Holzinger, Andreas","first_name":"Andreas"},{"last_name":"Schwarz","full_name":"Schwarz, Michael","first_name":"Michael"},{"full_name":"Ofner, Bernhard","last_name":"Ofner","first_name":"Bernhard"},{"last_name":"Jeanquartier","full_name":"Jeanquartier, Fleur","first_name":"Fleur"},{"last_name":"Calero-Valdez","full_name":"Calero-Valdez, Andre","first_name":"Andre"},{"first_name":"Carsten","full_name":"Röcker, Carsten","id":"61525","last_name":"Röcker"},{"first_name":"Martina","full_name":"Ziefle, Martina","last_name":"Ziefle"}],"main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1"}],"date_created":"2021-01-14T10:13:18Z","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"date_updated":"2023-03-15T13:49:52Z","year":2014,"user_id":"15514"},{"publisher":"Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe","citation":{"chicago":"Denninger, Fabian. Konzeption und Entwicklung eines multimedialen Informationssystems auf Basis von Multitouch-Technologie am Beispiel der interaktiven Flash-Anwendung “Ökotouch”. Lemgo: Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe, 2008.","short":"F.
