abstract = {{The pressing environmental challenges place significant constraints on resources, triggering the search for efficiency and performance characteristics in sustainable solutions. Mycelium-based composites (MBC) as biodegradable products and their diverse applications have the potential to replace conventional materials. Despite MBCs advantages, they remain not fully exploited in the construction sector due to their limited structural cap abilities. This research focuses on improving the structural performance of MBC by ing Mycelium and Natural Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (NFRP) as a material-efficient hybrid system. For reinforcement, a 2D wicker-lattice system is designed through custom robotic additive manufacturing processes guiding mycelium’s growth, improving its mechanical behavior, and eliminating the need for special formwork. A computationally optimized flow is used to inform material distribution, achieving efficient geometrical and structural formance. A slab panel is realized, showcasing the potential of this hybrid building system and expanding the use of bio-based composite materials in modular architecture applications.}},

abstract = {{Environmental noise is an important public health issue in cities worldwide and building facades play an essential role since they occupy a significant amount of vertical surfaces in the urban fabric. Facade acoustics deals with the interaction of sound and the building envelope, and specialists in the field use digital tools to perform calculations and predictive analysis required to fulfil project goals or meet construction regulations. This review aims to give an overview of the different commercial software tools that can be relevant in facade acoustics, pointing out their general information such as their developer, their type of software and license, and the categories within facade acoustics where these tools can be applied. The tools are classified in five categories: Environmental noise modelling, sound insulation, noise mapping, auralization and 3D geometry manipulation. Design tools for acoustics that cannot address any aspect of facades specifically are excluded. A total of 17 software tools are reviewed including 13 standalone programs, three plugins and one online tool.}},

abstract = {{Urban noise pollution is a major environmental health problem. International organizations are making efforts to prevent health damage due to high levels of noise in cities, but the design of the built environment typically neglects the acoustic impact of architectural projects. Building facades, covering a substantial part of the vertical surfaces of the urban fabric, have a significant effect on the wellbeing of the population and on the environmental impact of buildings. Facade geometries and materials interact with the diversity of sounds in the city composing soundscapes that influence the health, comfort, and productivity of people inside and outside of buildings. This study gives an overview of the elements involved in the composition of the urban soundscape and revises the potential effects of sound-reflective and sound-absorptive facades. With the purpose of exemplifying the integration of acoustic data into facade design processes, a parametric design workflow is developed to experiment with acoustic simulations of a street environment, alternating between sound-reflective and sound-absorptive facades.}},
