  text: Electrical and electronic systems have been getting raising importance for
    innovations in the automotive industry. Networking issues are a key factor in
    this process since they enable distributed control functions and user interaction
    bringing together nodes from different vendors. This paper analyses available
    and emerging network technologies for in-vehicle communication from a requirements
    driven perspective. It reviews successful network technologies from other application
    areas regarding a possible deployment in vehicular communication and distinguishes
    passenger car and commercial vehicle sectors as far as possible. This contribution
    is oriented to the OSI reference model showing the state of the art and future
    opportunities at the level of the several communication layers with a focus on
    physical layer issues and medium access protocols and including information modeling
    aspects.

  text: The reduction of wires and connections is a fundamental necessity for upcoming
    industrial 4.0 solutions, requiring a large amount of reconfigurability and flexibility.
    Our research focuses on recent ways of combining energy and data transmission
    in single contactless transducers, enabling easy installation, maintenance and
    possible fulfilment of high protection classes. While this approach can typically
    be solved by combining Wifi and inductive energy transfer, the Wifi aspect is
    often limited by the available media access and channel occupation. Another issue
    is the real time capability of Wifi or other wireless transmission protocols like
    IEEE 802.15.4. While creating a new wireless or contactless standard is beyond
    the focus of this work, we concentrate on combining existing technologies and
    their interoperability. This includes powerline communication systems, near field
    data transmission and inductive energy transfer mechanisms.

  text: This paper discusses an alternative to common Powerline or Power-over-Ethernet
    applications, combining a 100BASE-TX-equivalent full duplex communication and
    simultaneous DC power transmission on one single twisted pair wire. The reduction
    of wires and connections can potentially ease the modularity and reconfigurability
    of industrial production installations, if the data communication offers a sufficiently
    high robustness against influences from the DC power transmission. This part of
    our research focuses on the necessary electrical adaptations between data and
    power circuitry and evaluates interference scenarios that are common for industrial
    fieldbus installations.

  text: In this contribution we show enhancements of the safety of hazardous material
    stores by the usage of a condition monitoring system. Hazardous material stores
    function as a store for dangerous chemicals. We use fire simulations to simulate
    a fire and use the results of this simulation in our condition monitoring system
    in order to show the attainable gains. The used condition monitoring system utilises
    multiple sensors which are distributed inside and outside of the hazardous material
    store. The values of the sensors are combined over multiple levels into one state
    for the complete system. This allows us to significantly enhance the detection
    time of dangerous operating states, compared to the use of dedicated single sensors.

  text: 'Contactless interfaces are essential to different applications which rely
    on physical robustness and / or high modularity and movability. This work presents
    a solution for direct conversion of CAN signals for contactless capacitive coupling
    over an air gap. The coupling distances are short (in the range of less than 1
    mm), but can be extended by a supporting rail which contains coupling electrodes
    and conductors to deliver the signals also over larger distances. A modulation
    scheme is implemented to maintain the functionality of dominant and recessive
    bit status. No additional controller is needed; the transceiver module replaces
    the CAN transceiver typically added to any microcontroller. '

  text: This paper describes a method for automatically obtaining the order and position
    of contactless connected network participants in a linear physical topology. While
    the sequence of network devices can be determined with quite simple methods in
    networks with physical interconnections, these methods can not be applied in contactless
    networks. This work is based on a linear network topology using a backbone rail,
    which includes mechanisms for contactless energy and data transmission. The position
    estimation for each attached network device can be performed by determining a
    specific physical characteristic, which is altered along the rail extension. The
    proposed solution uses a capacitive resonant circuit to achieve a position detection.

  text: This paper describes an approach for a contactless, inductively coupled resonant
    energy supply system for multiple, independent endpoints. Typical contactless
    inductive energy supplies in industrial applications involve a combination of
    one primary inverter/coil and one secondary coil with a rectifier and a load.
    The work presented in this paper issues a one-to-many-approach instead, which
    can be used for creating a contactless automation network, having multiple secondary
    side loads driven by only one primary coil. The challenge is to run such a system
    in resonance, as every participant potentially affects the resonant frequency,
    and therefore the overall system efficiency. The effects of multiple participants
    on the resonant frequency are modeled, and the theoretical examinations are backed
    up by measurements run on a rail-based test system.
