abstract = {{This study, entitled “Housing-related open spaces as a health resource - requirements and design recommendations for health-promoting open space development. Using the example of cooperative housing”, examines how open spaces in housing cooperatives must be designed in order to offer a high quality of residence. In this context, it is examined whether the quality of residence promotes a more intensive use of the housing-related open spaces and thus increases the positive effects on the health of the residents.
Against this background, the work is divided into three main parts: In the first part, the scientific foundation is laid, whereby the research interest and methodological approaches are presented in the form of a multi-level mix of methods. Central terms such as urban nature, open space, urban ecosystem services, well-being, stress, recreation and health are defined and discussed in the context of the research questions.
The second part is dedicated to the conceptual framework and an in-depth theoretical examination of the role of urban open spaces in maintaining and promoting the health of city dwellers. By incorporating theoretical and empirical studies, it is shown that green urban open spaces have demonstrably positive effects on well-being and health. This study closes a research gap in this respect, as it focuses on qualitative factors of open spaces close to residential areas, which have received less attention in research to date. In addition, the contextualization addresses life in urban areas and highlights the importance of housing cooperatives for the development and maintenance of open spaces. It becomes clear that housing cooperatives play a central role in open space development as long-term property owners, as their open spaces are not only of aesthetic importance, but also of social and health significance. Therefore, the work deals with the design and functional requirements for housing-related open spaces, focusing on the needs of the residents and their use.
The third part serves the application-oriented implementation. Here, 16 open spaces of seven housing cooperatives are analysed using the mix of methods developed for this work, while the residents of 2,719 households were interviewed about their usage behaviour and needs. The data obtained is used to develop concrete design and maintenance criteria that can be used as guidelines for the sustainable development of housing-related open spaces. One focus is on practicable, cost-extensive recommendations for action that take into account both the needs of residents and the climatic challenges, particularly in the context of redensification, energy-efficient refurbishment and the redesign of open spaces.
Finally, the recommendations for action are transferred to other neighbourhoods and evaluated on the basis of student designs. The work concludes with extended recommendations for strategic and planning implementation, a summary of the findings and a critical reflection on the results and methods used.}},
