Based on combining a systematised building concept with a circular approach, it optimizes the construction and deconstruction processes of buildings through continuous digitalisation. The research therefore focuses on a systematised construction approach that allows for adaptive planning through combinations within the specific construction method and in the combination of components with each other. This results in the design of adaptive components that can be customized further as digital details via the digital description model, and ultimately manufactured in automated processes. The research examines and evaluates the relationship between materials, construction methods, flexibility, durability and efficiency to specify that individualized system constructions are essential for a circular building industry.","lang":"eng"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["1742-6588"],"eissn":["1742-6596"]},"date_updated":"2026-08-07T13:17:36Z","issue":"16","citation":{"ama":"Albus J, Hollmann-Schröter K, Hope G, Akca N. Project-specific adaptability can be ensured by a combination of automated machine technology and digital planning tools available today. In addition to achieving economic advantages, the focus is on improving sustainability factors, which concern both material consumption and functionality and improved use of resources and energy for building production and operation. The results of research into “lightweight aerogel concrete technology” has shown that an innovative liquid material mixture with insulating properties can be successfully implemented in an automated production process. An adaptive system for standardized wall, ceiling, and floor panels was developed, which can adapt to specific functionality needs and thus address the requirements of individual building tasks while keeping economic as well as architectural factors in mind. The advanced mono-material complies with current European regulations for insulated wall structures, considering the requirements for load-bearing capacity. Due to its homogeneous insulation effect across the entire element section, the aero lightweight concrete allows for intelligent detailing and connection principles and prevents the formation of thermal bridges. The relationship between material composition, material production, construction method, and building operation is essential for a circular planning process. Robotization as a multiple fabrication technology may facilitate these parameters in one cycle. The new technology allows for the crucial transition from research to an end-to-end construction workflow that maps the entire process chain, from concept planning to design and joining principles up to fabrication and assembly."}],"author":[{"last_name":"Albus","full_name":"Albus, Jutta","first_name":"Jutta"},{"first_name":"Kirsten","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2959-0211","id":"90080","last_name":"Hollmann-Schröter","full_name":"Hollmann-Schröter, Kirsten"}],"keyword":["Individualized standardization","Adaptability","Lightweight aerogel concrete technology","Resource optimization"],"publication":"Architecture, Structures and Construction"},{"title":"Individualized standardization as the overarching principle in the context of planetary boundaries","user_id":"83781","doi":"10.1088/1755-1315/1078/1/012071","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"citation":{"chicago":"Albus, Jutta, and Kirsten Hollmann-Schröter. “Individualized Standardization as the Overarching Principle in the Context of Planetary Boundaries.” IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science 1078, no. 1 (2022). https://doi.org/10.1088/1755-1315/1078/1/012071.","bjps":"Albus J and Hollmann-Schröter K (2022) Individualized Standardization as the Overarching Principle in the Context of Planetary Boundaries. IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science 1078.","chicago-de":"Albus, Jutta und Kirsten Hollmann-Schröter. 2022. The key to this transformation is end-to-end digitalization. Our approach aims to achieve a new architectural quality by linking digitized design tools, ecological and environmentally friendly concepts, and serial production processes. Against this background, two research projects were advanced to enable adaptive prefabricated systems based on combined additive manufacturing. Two case studies illustrate the research results. In the first, a digital assessment tool is being developed to improve planning processes. With the tool, standardized yet adaptive constructions can be evaluated according to their sustainability impact in an early design phase. The second approach focuses on delivering a customized material composition realized with additive manufacturing methods. In an automated co-extrusion process, the dimensions and building-physical quality of story-high wall panels (floor-to-ceiling) can be adapted to individual requirements. The optimum balance of standardization vs individualized building solutions will introduce a novel flexibility for the architectural design process as well as a higher production efficiency. This strategy of individualized standardization is based on integrative collaboration and visionary research.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science","keyword":["Individualized standardization","case study","lightweight aerogel concrete technology","adaptability","sustainability assessment"],"author":[{"first_name":"Jutta","full_name":"Albus, Jutta","last_name":"Albus"},{"first_name":"Kirsten","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2959-0211","full_name":"Hollmann-Schröter, Kirsten","last_name":"Hollmann-Schröter","id":"90080"}],"article_number":"012071","publisher":"IOP Publishing","_id":"13909","extern":"1","type":"scientific_journal_article","volume":1078,"date_created":"2026-08-06T16:23:36Z","status":"public","publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 1078","year":"2022","department":[{"_id":"DEP1022"}]}]
