  abstract     = {{System theories are closely connected to the development of individual branches of science. Thus, system-theoretical approaches can be found in numerous scientific fields like biology, ecology, pedagogy, business administration, organization theory, engineering science, and political science. System-theoretical realizations are integrated into the own scientific field - with the concept of the work system. The starting point of various system-theoretical developments was formed by the system-theoretical-cybernetic approach. This mathematical approach contributed, considerably, to the fact that the system idea is applied to a set of scientific subjects. Individual scientific fields, in turn, provided impulses for the advancement of system theories. Due to various system-theoretical realizations an overview of system theories and approaches - how it is given in the first part of this article - can, inevitably, be only one interpretation of the manifold literature. The depiction of individual system-theoretical approaches in the first part of this article orients itself primarily towards several branches of science. Thus, the socio-technical system approach originating from social psychology is introduced as it corresponds with its own conception of a work system. The theory of social systems - originating from sociology - provides several impulses for other scientific fields. As a result, the individual development stages of the theory of social systems are outlined. This theory and other branches of science like business administration in turn took up realizations from the evolution theory. For this reason, this theory -originating from biology - will also be explained. Furthermore, this part exemplifies how system-theoretical realizations were integrated into engineering science. The single system-theoretical approaches are constituted in conjunction with the appropriate idea of man in each case. This should help when comparing the individual approaches with the own normative requirement of designing work in a human and economic way. In another part of the article the work system concept is described in detail as an entry to the systematic analysis, common in ergonomic literature. This part deals with the term "work system", the components of a typical work system and its substantial reciprocal effects. The last part of the article is dedicated to the systematic design of work systems. First of all general strategies of work system design are explained. Subsequently, models and methods are presented, exemplarily, based on a level scheme for the systematical order of work-referred realizations. These models and methods are able to support a systematical proceeding with the anticipating and prospective work system design. These approaches and methods are the result of research projects which were accomplished by the Institute of Industrial Engineering and Ergonomics (IAW) and by the Research Institute for Operations Management (FIR) at the RWTH Aachen. The exemplarily cited research results are supposed to show that the use of the work system approach is possible and reasonable on different levels of ergonomic research.}},

As more and more print techniques and new security features will be established, total quality security, authenticity and bank note printing must be assured. Therefore, this factor necessitates amplification of a sensorial concept in general. We propose a concept for both authenticity checking and inspection methods for pattern recognition and classification for securities and banknotes, which is based on the concept of sensor fusion and fuzzy interpretation of data measures. In the approach different methods of authenticity analysis and print flaw detection are combined, which can be used for vending or sorting machines, as well as for printing machines. Usually only the existence or appearance of colours and their textures are checked by cameras. Our method combines the visible camera images with IR-spectral sensitive sensors, acoustical and other measurements like temperature and pressure of printing machines.}},

This paper describes the values and possibilities of a Hardware-ln-the-Loop (HIL) based Integration Lab, which enables a wide range of automatic tests to be performed on networked ECUs. The Integration Lab is the complex rebuild of a Scania truck/bus, containing the ECU superset, for connecting and testing networked ECUs. It involves more than 30 ECUs and eleven CAN networks. For a complete system, where the variant fauna is as extensive as the Scania vehicle, and continuously growing in size, the need for testing increases, especially regarding testing different variants and regression testing. Manual testing is then no longer an option, since the need for testing, concerning both quality and quantity, increases above the limit of where manual testing is applicable. A manual test lab is often a good way to start testing ECUs on an early stage of the development and is relatively easily and fast built. But in the long run the need for an automated lab becomes obvious. In the beginning the output of an automated lab is less than that of a manual lab. When the output level reaches that of a manual lab it continues to climb past this level since test scripts written earlier will continue to be run each test round. The Integration Lab demonstrates that dSPACE Simulator technology is capable of handling huge vehicle networks far in excess of that of passenger cars.}},

  abstract     = {{A new chronic treatment for inherited disorders of long-chain fatty acid oxidation involves administering up to one-third of dietary calories as triheptanoin, a medium-odd-chain triglyceride (Roe CR, Sweetman L, Roe DS, David F, and Brunengraber H. J Clin Invest 110: 259–269, 2002). Heptanoate and C5-ketone bodies derived from its partial oxidation in liver are precursors of anaplerotic propionyl-CoA in peripheral tissues. It was hypothesized that increasing anaplerosis in peripheral tissues would boost energy production. In the present study, we tested the potential of a triheptanoin emulsion as an intravenous nutrient. Normal rats were infused with triheptanoin intravenously or intraduodenally at up to 40% of caloric requirement. The blood concentration ratio (heptanoate/C5-ketone bodies) was high with intravenous and low with intraduodenal triheptanoin infusion. During intravenous infusion of triheptanoin, lipolysis was stimulated but appeared compensated by fatty acid reesterification. During intraduodenal infusion of triheptanoin, lipolysis was not stimulated. Our data support the hypothesis that intravenous triheptanoin could be used to treat decompensated patients with long-chain fatty acid oxidation disorders.}},

For the most part these are related to the industrial sector as well as to the health service, in particular hospitals. As far as the application of work sampling in the retail trade is concerned, only a very limited number of publications can be found. These usually focus on small retail companies or single sections of department stores. The authors of the article have carried out work sampling studies in three large-area stores of a German retail chain. In the first part of their article, the authors describe the goals and context of the study. In the second part, important resulting requirements from the goals and specific framework conditions of retail trade are transferred to the study. The procedure during the implementation of these requirements is then roughly described. In the third part of the article, selected results of the study including a correlation analysis are presented and interpreted.}},

  abstract     = {{Any academic conference requires the efforts of many people, from conference committee members to reviewers to authors to attendees. I would like to thank some of the people who helped organize ACM Hypertext 2006 here. Uffe K. Wiil did an excellent job as General Chair, taking care of the lion's share of the budgeting, planning, and organizing, from the hotel selection to the day-to-day logistics. Jessica Rubart was an extremely able and effective co-Program Chair. Niels Olof Bouvin, the Technical Services Chair, worked hard to set up, customize and maintain our review system. Publicity Chair David Millard ensured that word of the conference reached many people.The reviewers this year did an excellent job. We received 41 full paper submissions, of which 12 were accepted. We also received 29 short paper submissions, of which 10 were accepted. As these acceptance rates indicate, we were unable to accept every paper we would have liked. We were particularly pleased to see a large number of papers that spoke to this year's theme of social networks and networking. This pays tribute to the breadth and flexibility of the community, something that many people note as one of the true strengths of this conference series.ACM Hypertext, as a conference series, is at a crossroads. When Uffe Wiil and I agreed to organize this year's event, we generated a quick preliminary call for papers with the headline "Quo Vadimus?" Looking at the submissions and accepted papers at this year (and, indeed the past several years) conference gives us some idea of how the Hypertext community has changed since the initial workshops of the late 1980's. Understanding this change can help us answer our question about where we are going. I hope we can use this event not only to further our understanding of the research aspects of our community, but also to plot a sustainable course for the future.}},

The Smart Dice Cup is used in a similar way as a traditional leather dice cup to generate random numbers.   abstract     = {{Over the last years, a variety of pervasive games was developed. Although some of these applications were quite successful in bringing digital games back to the real world, very little is known about their successful integration into smart environments. When developing video games, developers can make use of abroad variety of heuristics. Using these heuristics to guide the development process of applications for intelligent environments could significantly increase their functional quality. This paper addresses the question, whether existing heuristics can be used by pervasive game developers, or if specific design guidelines for smart home environments are required. In order to give an answer, the transferability of video game heuristics was evaluated in a two-step process. In a first step, a set of validated heuristics was analyzed to identify platform-dependent elements. In a second step, the transferability of those elements was assessed in a focus group study.}},
