  abstract = {{Planning case report forms for data capture in clinical trials is a labor-insensitive and not formalized process. These CRFs are often neither standardized nor using defined data elements. Metadata registries as the NCI caDSR provide the capability to create forms based on common data elements. However, an exchange of these forms into clinical trial management systems through a standardized format like CDISC ODM is currently not offered. Thus, our objectives were to develop a mapping model between NCI forms and ODM. We analyzed 3012 NCI forms and included common data elements regarding their frequency and uniqueness. In this paper, we have created a mapping model between both formats and identified limitations in the conversion process: Semantic codes requested from the caDSR registry did not allow a proper mapping to ODM items and information like the number of module repetitions got lost. Summarized, it can be stated that our mapping model is feasible. However, mapping of semantic concepts in ODM needs to be specified more precisely.}},

  abstract = {{Background: Semantic interoperability between routine healthcare and clinical research is an unsolved issue, as information systems in the healthcare domain still use proprietary and site-specific data models. However, information exchange and data harmonization are essential for physicians and scientists if they want to collect and analyze data from different hospitals in order to build up registries and perform multicenter clinical trials. Consequently, there is a need for a standardized metadata exchange based on common data models. Currently this is mainly done by informatics experts instead of medical experts.
Objectives: We propose to enable physicians to exchange, rate, comment and discuss their own medical data models in a collaborative web-based repository of medical forms in a standardized format.
Methods: Based on a comprehensive requirement analysis, a web-based portal for medical data models was specified. In this context, a data model is the technical specification (attributes, data types, value lists) of a medical form without any layout information. The CDISC Operational Data Model (ODM) was chosen as the appropriate format for the standardized representation of data models. The system was implemented with Ruby on Rails and applies web 2.0 technologies to provide a community based solution. Forms from different source systems – both routine care and clinical research – were converted into ODM format and uploaded into the portal.
Results: A portal for medical data models based on ODM-files was implemented (http://www.medical-data-models.org). Physicians are able to upload, comment, rate and download medical data models. More than 250 forms with approximately 8000 items are provided in different views (overview and detailed presentation) and in multiple languages. For instance, the portal contains forms from clinical and research information systems.
Conclusion: The portal provides a system-independent repository for multilingual data models in ODM format which can be used by physicians. It serves as a platform for discussion and enables the exchange of multilingual medical data models in a standardized way.}},

  abstract = {{With a prevalence of 20%, chronic pruritus is a symptom of many diseases with major impact on healthcare costs. The lack of specific therapeutic measures makes the development of new drugs and their testing in clinical trials urgent. It is not possible to measure pruritus in an objective way. For these reasons, it is necessary to have a series of standardized measures to characterize pruritus in a reliable way. Intensity scales such as the visual analog scale (VAS) are most frequently used to document the course of the symptoms. However, for assessing pruritus intensity, VAS is not an optimal instrument, although it cannot be dispensed with. The VAS should be combined with other scales in clinical studies in order to internally test the consistency of data. Other instruments for assessing intensity and course of pruritus are in the process of development. Presently scratch activity and scratch-associated lesions can be documented in a descriptive fashion. There are some studies that have employed devices to document scratch activity; however, methodological studies are not yet available. The patient-benefit index is an indispensable tool in clinical trials. A questionnaire for gathering data on the history and some pruritus-specific parameters has been developed and published. Questionnaires on patient quality of life, anxiety and depression are helpful in obtaining data on other cost-relevant parameters. A questionnaire on the quality of life, for instance, can provide important help in the assessment of the burden of the disease. The results of these questionnaires can be correlated with data on pruritus intensity scales. The relevant questionnaires have been partially digitalized so that they are available immediately as part of patient care. Additional methodological developments and studies are required in order to define a robust set of instruments for measuring pruritus in daily practice and in clinical studies.}},

Fluctuating light regimes simulated regular vertical mixing in lakes with a ratio of euphotic to mixed depth (zeu : zmix) of 1 and 0.5 on a cloudless day. Light fluctuations at zeu : zmix = 1 decreased the growth rates of S. minutulus, N. acicularis, and L. redekei by 18%, 33%, and 29%, respectively, compared to constant light at the same daily light supply. Temperature had no effect on this decrease. Halving zeu : zmix (simulating deep mixing) had the same effect on growth as halving the photoperiod, demonstrating that these factors are cumulative. We introduce a simple empirical factor to adjust growth rates measured under constant light to account for fluctuating light. This factor is independent of temperature and photoperiod, applies over a range of zeu : zmix, and accurately describes present and published growth rates of several species. We show how to account for temporal variability of the light supply at different temperatures and photoperiods when predicting growth rates of phytoplankton.}},

One of the most debated topics in EC research is whether or not EC is dependent on contingency awareness. In this study, we go beyond this debate by examining whether contingency awareness mediates the impact of attentional resources and goal-directed attention on EC. Attentional resources were manipulated by presenting CSs and USs either within the same modality or in different modalities. Goal-directed attention was manipulated by asking participants to respond to the CSs or to the USs. Results indicate that the effect of goal-directed attention on EC is mediated by contingency awareness, whereas the effect of attentional resources on EC is not.}},

E.g. estimations say that the amount of digital information will grow about 50 percent in the year 2012 compared to the year 2011. Following the rising availability of digital data, there is also an inherent need for methods to transport these data, as the data is to be used and processed at some time. Many methods and channels are available for the transportation of these digital data. This research work presents the foundation work for the new microIDENT coding (2D-code) for document authentication. As a coding for document authentication it is one objective of microIDENT, to increase the difficulty of copying a document without the destruction of the coding. The new coding requires, in comparison to other 2D-codes, less space when printed. This is achieved by omitting some of the features that are used in standard 2D-codes for stabilisation and that are necessary in a mobile environment. In addition, we will also show that this new 2D-code delivers, under certain constraints, a better performance than other 2D-codes. }},

  abstract = {{In this paper, it is proposed a feature selection procedure based on Linear Discriminant Analysis. The aim behind this approach is to obtain a minimal set of features still enabling a separation between a number of different classes. Additionally, the reduced number of features implies faster computation and enables resource-limited hardware implementations for real-time signal processing applications. Also, incorporating only a small number of features retains the application's interpretability as a feature space of maximum three features can be visualised directly. Due to this, an expert can directly follow a decision system's answer. The proposed method has been evaluated in the context of an electric drive diagnosis application. In this scope, the LDA feature selection approach is at least as good as the benchmarked feature selection methods. When regarding only a minimal number of features, LDA outperforms the other approaches in terms of classification accuracy. As a secondary result. one can see how important a sensible choice of features is. While some arbitrary combinations produce completely inseparable feature spaces. Three are still combinations that can separate the classes even linearly such that no sophisticated classification concept (e.g. SVM) is needed. The authors are aware of the fact that the findings are shown only in the context of one specific application. Based on the work elaborated here, further research towards generalisation of the proposed approach is intended to be carried out. Additionally, the findings shall be examined using classifier concepts different from SVM, such as Fuzzy Pattern Classifiers.}},

In order to support this aim, the applied control strategy can be improved by testing and developing the electronic control units by means of Hardware-in-the-Loop simulation. For the simulation, a corresponding real-time model of the powertrain is required. The development of the model is a time-consuming task due to the high dynamics and switching frequencies in the electrical subsystem, comprising the electric drives, inverter and battery and due to the various configurations of the mechanical subsystem, comprising the transmissions. In this contribution, a method for an efficient modeling of different transmission configurations for power-split systems and different types of inverter is presented. Besides the required real-time capability, the models consider the correct power flows and power losses. The presented approach is proven by means of simulation results.}},

Power converters are used in hybrid electric vehicles but also in other vehicle applications like electric steering systems. For testing electronic equipment, hardware-in-the-loop simulation is a today's standard method in the automotive industry. It always requires a real-time simulation of the plant. For testing the electronic control units of power electronics, real-time capable models of power electronic circuits need to be developed, accordingly. This paper presents an approach for an automated generation of a FPGA-based oversampling model of power electronic circuits. Two types of modeling methods for considering the nonlinear switching behavior will be compared. For applying the oversampling approach a generator is presented, which automates a FPGA-based implementation of the circuit model. The approach is proven by simulation and measurement results.}},

RoomXT virtually extends a user's physical environment by providing a “life-like” communication channel for informal and spontaneous interactions. We use a wall-sized display together with head-tracking and 3D rendering to achieve visual contiguity between the real and a virtual environment. As one possible application of this system, we set up a remote dining situation for two users. The dinner table is visually extended into the virtual environment in which a live video stream of the dining partner is shown. Great care was taken in regard to the aesthetic and device-free integration into the living room. First impressions of potential users support the validity of our design decisions.}},

  abstract = {{Currently, cities are confronting a multitude of challenges including climate change, demographic change, urbanization and land subsidence. Resulting flooding, droughts and other disturbances could lead to water shortages, severe interruptions, hydraulic problems or underutilization of water infrastructure systems. One way that cities can become more resilient is by diversifying their water resources and reducing their dependency on central water infrastructures. Water infrastructure systems consisting of decentral or semi-central partial systems would be more resilient because a failure in these systems would only affect a small part of the urban area. Instead of an incremental improvement of the water infrastructure, there is a need for system innovations that will allow an adaptive development to changing conditions and which will ensure that future sustainability challenges are met. However, moving towards more resilient water technologies is seen as controversial for built-up areas. To answer the question if a transformation to a more resilient water infrastructure in built-up areas is feasible (technically and economically), a balancing and assessment of the corresponding effects have been done by way of comparing a “transformation” scenario with a reference scenario “business as usual”. If one takes a long-term period of observation (70 years), the costs balance of the scenarios “reference” and “transformation” both turn out to be on a comparative level. By contrast, the consumption of environmental resources in the scenario “transformation” is almost twice as low as in the “reference”.}},

  abstract = {{Contactless interfaces are essential to different applications which rely on physical robustness and / or high modularity and movability. This work presents a solution for direct conversion of CAN signals for contactless capacitive coupling over an air gap. The coupling distances are short (in the range of less than 1 mm), but can be extended by a supporting rail which contains coupling electrodes and conductors to deliver the signals also over larger distances. A modulation scheme is implemented to maintain the functionality of dominant and recessive bit status. No additional controller is needed; the transceiver module replaces the CAN transceiver typically added to any microcontroller. }},

It will be of particular interest for a CR system to apply predictive modeling in order to forecast the behavior of the coexisting environment. A secondary cognitive user shall use preemptive tuning of its operating parameters following the predictive model. However, a considerable challenge is to generate an accurate model and predict efficiently in order to meet strict time related requirements of industrial applications. Such predictive modeling has already gained some attention but real-time experimental results have never been reported to the best of our knowledge. In this contribution we investigate the performance of a Markov model based CR system using simulative and experimental environments for its application in industrial systems.}},

  abstract = {{This master thesis focuses on the problems that can occur at 3D stereoscopic productions with a student budget. It provides the reader with the basic knowledge about the human eye. Further the human perception of 3D stereoscopic content is described. The reader will learn about the basic techniques and the technical appliances used in the production and the presentation of 3D stereoscopic movies. The special focus of this work is the comparison of a low budget student spot that was produced in stereoscopic 3D to other well known blockbuster movies regarding the subjects of ghosting/crosstalk, disparity and asynchronous frames. The reader will know how he or she can prepare a 3D life action shooting with a low budget avoiding these three failure sources.}},

This kind of recording technique simulates human hearing and provides a 3D recording space, bringing in new mixing possibilities. After literature research three example projects get analysed and discussed regarding the factors of success. Crowdfunding was found to be a chance to finance student films with low budgets. abstract = {{In the last years, an ongoing trend of producing stereoscopic movies can be observed. While they hold some advantages like stronger immersion, also side effects like visual fatigue were reported. One of the reasons for this is the vergence-accomodation conflict, which describes the unnatural uncoupling of vergence and accomodation that audiences of stereoscopic films are forced to do. As this conflict only causes symptoms at excessive discrepancies, filmmakers should keep the stereoscopic disparity in their films below a certain level. However, there is no consensus on what level that limit should be, so a general guideline is needed. By investigating the findings of different authors and analysing the disparity values of five stereoscopic feature films, a recommendation to limit the disparity of theatrical films to a value of 3% in negative space and 2% in positive space is given.}},

Those effects are becoming more andmore realistic and especially for natural phenomena more and more challenging for artist and equipment. Nevertheless, films as "Hancock" and "The day after Tomorrow" set superb examples for a successful realisation. Inspired by those films this thesis intended to develop a computer generated tornado scenario. By means of FumeFX, a Autodesk 3D Studio Max plug-in used to calculate and control fluid simulations, a tornado was created. Using multilayer compositing in Adobe After Effects this tornado was integrated in an artificial environment. Flying bricks and planks as well as additional fluid elements were introduced to the scenes to enhance realism. By proceduralizing pipeline components, the workflow was mostly automated.}},

  abstract = {{This is a thesis concerning the making of a short documentary movie about the funeral ceremony of the late princess of Rindi, Tamu Rambu Yuliana, who was well known as a preserver of old weaving traditions. Her funeral on November 20, 2003 was a very big event on the island.
Even though the infra-structural development is quite poor, East Sumba is culturally rich. Most of cultural objects are related to the local Marapu religion, such as, the traditional houses, the megalithic tombstones and the funeral ceremony, which is the biggest ceremony of all the ritual ceremonies.
With regard to Tamu Rambu Yuliana, as a custodian of the arts and culture of Rindi, her name will remain attached to her defense of the Marapu religion in its struggle to maintain traditional arts and her artistic creativity in the production of high quality fabrics. With her imposing tomb and the memory of her, her great funeral left a great impression on the collective memory of the people of Rindi.

@misc{12983,
  abstract     = {{Background
A broad spectrum of pathogens is causative for respiratory tract infections, but symptoms are mostly similar. Therefore, the identification of the causative viruses and bacteria is only feasible using multiplex PCR or several monoplex PCR tests in parallel.
Methods
The analytical sensitivity of three multiplex PCR assays, RespiFinder-19, RespiFinder-SMART-22 and xTAG-Respiratory-Virus-Panel-Fast-Assay (RVP), were compared to monoplex real-time PCR with quantified standardized control material. All assays include the most common respiratory pathogens.
Results
To compare the analytical sensitivity of the multiplex assays, samples were inoculated with 13 different quantified viruses in the range of 101 to 105 copies/ml. Concordant results were received for rhinovirus, whereas the RVP detected influenzavirus, RSV and hMPV more frequently in low concentrations. The RespiFinder-19 and the RespiFinder-SMART-22 showed a higher analytical sensitivity for adenoviruses and coronaviruses, whereas the RVP was incapable to detect adenovirus and coronavirus in concentrations of 104 copies/ml. The RespiFinder-19 and RespiFinder-SMART-22A did not detect influenzaviruses (104 copies/ml) and RSV (103 copies/ml). The detection of all 13 viruses in one sample was only achieved using monoplex PCR. To analyze possible competitive amplification reactions between the different viruses, samples were further inoculated with only 4 different viruses in one sample. Compared to the detection of 13 viruses in parallel, only a few differences were found.
The incidence of respiratory viruses was compared in tracheal secretion (TS) samples (n = 100) of mechanically ventilated patients in winter (n = 50) and summer (n = 50). In winter, respiratory viruses were detected in 32 TS samples (64%) by RespiFinder-19, whereas the detection rate with RVP was only 22%. The most frequent viruses were adenovirus (32%) and PIV-2 (20%). Multiple infections were detected in 16 TS samples (32%) by RespiFinder-19. Fewer infections were found in summer (RespiFinder-19: 20%; RVP: 6%). All positive results were verified using monoplex PCR.
Conclusions
Multiplex PCR tests have a broad spectrum of pathogens to test at a time. Analysis of multiple inoculated samples revealed a different focus of the detected virus types by the three assays. Analysis of clinical samples showed a high concordance of detected viruses by the RespiFinder-19 compared to monoplex tests.}},
