In this paper we describe an image processing and pattern recognition approach which is based on the Sound-of-Intaglio principle for the usage in smart devices such as smartphones. Today, in many world regions smartphones are in use. These devices become more and more computing units, equipped with resource-limited, but effective CPUs, cameras with illumination, and flexible operating systems. Hence, it is obvious to apply smartphones for banknote authentication, especially for visually impaired persons. Our approach shows that those devices are capable of processing data under the constraints of image quality and processing power. Strictly a mobile device as such is not an industrial product for harsh environments, but it is possible to use mobile devices for banknote authentication. The concept is based on a new strategy for constructing adaptive Wavelets for the analysis of different print patterns on a banknote. Furthermore, a banknote specific feature vector is generated which describes an authentic banknote effectively under various illumination conditions. Based on experiment design we measured phase currents of a physical demonstrator device including mechanical defects and extracted signal features using proper orthogonal decomposition. The information technologies (IT) for this process chain are not well developed and established. To integrate IT and CAD-CAM-systems into the process chain of profiling firstly a product data model is needed, which is able to-store all relevant data for the production of the profile and to link the processes with consistent data. To link the processes it is important that a subsequent process in the chain is able to obtain all data about the process results of the previous processes to adapt to the profile geometry in this production stage. Therefore the CAM-modules, which also need to be developed individually for .each process type, must consi?er the corruption of the pr~file geometry and estimate the process result w1th the output geometry as 1nput data for the next process step. Due to the material behaviour of wood and wood based materials concerning the shrinking and swelling it is also necessary to calculate the geometry corruptions in case of a change in moisture content of the profile. Characteristics of the esthetical quality are rarely defined. For the quality management of furniture producers this is an unsatisfying situation, because there are minor possibilities to intervene early in the process and the surface quality in the multi-stage production process cannot be controlled. This obscure process system is the reason for a less continuous surface quality, rising process and reclamation costs, particularly with regard to prepared wood or wood-based substrates. The development of a complete quality concept of high gloss surfaces is the subject matter in the current research project at the University of Applied Sciences Ostwestfalen-Lippe. The precise research approaches are based on an exact definition of each characteristics and their physical behaviour to disturb the appearance quality. This chain is still not consistently connected by means of information technologies. The design and the setup for each process in the chain are mostly done manually, using the experience of the operator. Computer aided systems (CAD/CAM) as widely used in the furniture industry are not in this field. The procedures are more complex and could not be automatized by the state of the art feature based algorithms. One attempt to solve the problem is the creation of a product data model that contains all information for the whole production process - not only geometrical data and tolerances but also semantic information (e.g. material, coating, batch size, etc.). Every process in the chain is now transforming the profile in a systematic and stochastic way. Both can be computed by the use of rules of artificial intelligence and tolerance calculations by means of statistical methods. Special CAM modules, which generate the specific process data, give also back the transformed profile and other necessary information to the superordinate product data model. The actual specific process data, for example for the process of profiling (e.g. setting parameters, pitch) can then be computed by a post processer using actual inputs as the geometry of the specified machine. The whole process chain can so be simulated before the real setup. The tools and processes can so be designed simultaneously in advance. The time for the production process can be reduced. This systematic is generating the same potentials as feature based CAD/CAM systems in the carcase furniture industry. Model learning and anomaly detection for this approach are considered. The proposed approach is further evaluated in a small model factory. In the second study, we additionally applied new developed questionnaires and analyzed participants’ data (n=24 participants between 19-76 years of age) regarding relations of user factors, users’ knowledge about technical processes and attitudes such as privacy and security of technology-enhanced environments. In contrast to existing assumptions, the results showed that general structural knowledge about technical processes was not related with attitudes such as privacy and security. But the potential for the optimization of the amount of alloy element is limited. The modification of the gold plating by means ofnanoscale particles seems to have a larger potential. Natural resources as well in India are limited, but particularly the growing middle class with increasing incomes wants to improve their quality of life. This contradiction can only be solved with a strategic energy efficiency scheme in India. This chapter deals with the threats and opportunities of the building development in the next decades. Today, 40 % of the total energy consumption worldwide is covered by residential and nonresidential buildings. Energy- and cost-efficient design, material use, and maintenance of old and new buildings interwoven with higher user mobility are crucial points of smart cities in the future. Therefore, education, particularly higher education; R&D; and climate-related innovations are the main drivers for a better quality of life and for the more participation in fighting against the climate change. Furthermore, the method can also be applied for the set-up of a new seed train, for example for a new cell line. The additional high nutrient availability in highly decomposed peat soils of these newly formed ecosystems favours the fast establishment of a small number of helophytes while the return of lost target species like low sedges and brown mosses could be delayed for decades. We hypothesise that the phosphorus (P) uptake of the newly developed vegetation substantially influences the P cycle in rewetted fens. Therefore, we investigated how much of the P released in upper degraded peat soils is pumped across the redox-interface between the soil and surface water (=‘P barrier’) during the growing season (∼150 days) by six helophytes (Phragmites australis, Typha latifolia, Glyceria maxima, Carex acutiformis, Carex riparia, and Phalaris arundinacea) in five rewetted fens. We then assessed how this would affect the different plant-available P fractions in the rooted degraded peat layers. The highest P uptake during the growing season (duration 150 days from May to September) was recorded for T. latifolia and G. maxima (3.0 and 2.8 g m−2, respectively). Overall, the P uptake was in the range of the P mobilisation rates we measured in highly decomposed peat soils (range: 0.8–15.6 g P m−2, n = 30), but four to 10-fold higher than diffusive net P fluxes at the interface between soil and surface water. Accordingly, helophytes are able to compensate for the high P mobilisation in degraded peat soils during the growing season, by incorporating this P into biomass. On the other hand a large part of the plant-P stock is released after die back through leaching and mineralisation, which increases the P load of these newly formed shallow lakes and possibly also of adjacent water courses. We estimated that it would still take 20–50 years to exhaust the large pool of plant-available P in highly decomposed peat soils if aboveground biomass was removed. Since interactions between these factors may be important, we cultivated Stephanodiscus minutulus and Nitzschia acicularis (freshwater diatoms) under silicon limitation at different temperatures and photoperiods in continuous and batch culture. The Monod parameters of Si-limited growth indicated that S. minutulus should be superior under Si limitation. The type of interaction between silicate, temperature and photoperiod differed between species and indicated that the advantage of S. minutulus increases under low temperatures and photoperiods. Competition experiments in semicontinuous culture confirmed these predictions and were described accurately with a model of factor interactions. Multiple regression analysis of field data from a shallow eutrophic lake showed that dissolved silicate (DSi), temperature, photoperiod and total phosphorus (TP) were the most important predictors of spring centric diatom biovolume, where lower temperatures and photoperiods favour this group and higher biovolumes coincide with DSi depletion and higher TP. Pennate diatoms depended more on light, winter population size and grazer abundance. Conditions in situ suggested that factor interactions play a role during spring under strong Si limitation. We propose that the type of interaction reflects specific niche adaptation. For this purpose, we used the lake model FLake and analyzed 50 years of temperature data from Lake Stechlin, Germany, which served as the cooling water reservoir for the Rheinsberg NPP from 1966 until 1990. Both modeling and statistical data analysis revealed a strong influence of the NPP cooling water discharge on the lake water temperatures and the vertical stability of the water column. A remarkable effect of thermal pollution consisted of strong vertical mixing in winter produced by the discharge of warm water into the lake when ambient water temperatures were below 4 °C. This effect caused a significant increase in the deep hypolimnion temperatures and a corresponding decrease of the vertical stability in the summer. In turn, climate warming had the opposite effect on the summer stability by increasing lake surface temperatures. Both the thermal pollution and climate change increased the duration of the summer stratification period. Our results suggest that industrial thermal pollution in temperate lakes during winter is stored in the deep water column until the next winter, whereas heat added in the summer dissipates relatively rapidly into the atmosphere.
