A model application monitoring a knitting process was developed, where the take-off of the produced fabric is controlled by an electric motor. The idea is to equip a synchronous motor with a smart camera and appropriate image processing hard- and software components. Subsequently, the characteristics of knitted fabric are analysed by machine-learning (ML) methods. Our concept includes motor-current analysis and image processing. The aim is to implement an assistance system for the industrial large circular knitting process. An assistance system will help to shorten the retrofitting process. The concept is based on a low cost hardware approach for a smart camera, and stems from the recent development of image processing applications for mobile devices [1–4].}},

abstract = {{In modern industrial applications driven by Cyber-physical systems (CPS) it is a challenging task to model and optimize processes such as machine analysis and diagnosis. Since the CPS have to act autonomously, a procedure for automated decision making has to be designed. In our work we concentrate on the design of a decision procedure by a fuzzy classifier approach. For our application on decision making in an industrial environment, a fuzzy approach was picked as convenient classification technique regarding balance between accuracy and computational time. We present a supervised learning method called FUZZY-ComRef which combines fuzzy classification and our combinatorial refinement method, called ComRef [1]. Due to the fact that fuzzy classification might behave inaccurately for some datasets, the aim of our approach is to improve the results provided by the (stand-alone) fuzzy classification. We show the performance of FUZZY-ComRef evaluated on the samples from the UCI Repository and on our real-world dataset Motor Drive Diagnosis. In addition, we discuss the quadratic computational time problem arising from the combinatorial nature of ComRef. Furthermore, we show based on real-time evaluations that within parallelisation the proposed FUZZY-ComRef is suitable to many applications in CPS.}},

abstract = {{Recent industrial applications are implemented in a modular way, resulting in flexibility during the whole life cycle, i.e., setup, operation, and maintenance. This applies especially to larger applications like logistic, production, and printing processes. Their modular character is resulting from the constantly increasing complexity of such installations, which makes their supervision for securing reliable operation a difficult task: the data of hundreds (if not thousands) of signal sources must be acquired, communicated, and evaluated for system diagnosis. In this contribution we summarize the challenges arising in such applications and show that distributed sensor and information fusion for modular self-diagnosis tackles these challenges. Here, we propose an innovative distributed architecture encompassing intelligent sensor nodes, self-configuring real-time communication networks, and a suitable sensor and information fusion system for condition monitoring. New challenges arise in the context of distributed information fusion systems, which are identified and to which an outlook on future solutions is provided. A number of these solutions have already been discovered, implemented, and are evaluated in the context of a demonstrator, which resembles a real-world printing application.}},

abstract = {{Today, mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, etc.) are widespread and of high importance for their users. Their performance as well as versatility increases over time. This leads to the opportunity to use such devices for more specific tasks like image processing in an industrial context. For the analysis of images requirements like image quality (blur, illumination, etc.) as well as a defined relative position of the object to be inspected are crucial. Since mobile devices are handheld and used in constantly changing environments the challenge is to fulfill these requirements. We present an approach to overcome the obstacles and stabilize the image capturing process such that image analysis becomes significantly improved on mobile devices. Therefore, image processing methods are combined with sensor fusion concepts. The approach consists of three main parts. First, pose estimation methods are used to guide a user moving the device to a defined position. Second, the sensors data and the pose information are combined for relative motion estimation. Finally, the image capturing process is automated. It is triggered depending on the alignment of the device and the object as well as the image quality that can be achieved under consideration of motion and environmental effects.}},

We characterize the whole license-free 2.4-GHz-ISM band with a time resolution of 110 μs and a frequency resolution of 1MHz in a coexistence scenario with four antennas obstructed by robot arm movements. Additionally, the frequency and time variance of the measured channel attenuations are analyzed.}},

abstract = {{Hybrid electric powertrains are developed for reducing the fuel consumption and consequently the emission of carbon dioxide. The fuel consumption of those systems depends significantly on the topology of the powertrain and the applied control strategy. For testing and improving the control strategy in terms of the overall system efficiency, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation can be applied. In order to operate the corresponding electronic control units in a virtual environment, it emulates the behavior of the actuator and sensor signals by a real-time simulation of the powertrain. Developing those powertrain models is a time-consuming task, due to high dynamics and high switching frequencies of the electrical subsystem and due to the large diversity of powertrain configurations. The electrical subsystem comprises the electric motor, inverter and battery whereas the different powertrain configurations are composed of the transmission, the combustion engine, the electric drives, etc.. Additionally, the correct power flow and losses within the powertrains components must be considered when HIL simulation is intended to be used for improving the control strategy. In this contribution a method for modeling arbitrary combinations of clutches and various types of gears is presented which enables an efficient modeling of transmission systems. The obtained models are real-time capable and the correct power flows and losses are considered. The method is applied to a powertrain with a two mode power-split transmission, which is a typical example comprising electric drives as well as shifting clutches. Finally simulation results will be presented.}},

This method is an adapted variant of the so called Hardware-in-the-Loop simulation where virtual energy components are combined with geographically distributed real energy components. In order to integrate the real components with minimal instrumentation efforts, measured quantities are included as information flows, only, while the physical power flows are connected to local available grid structures. The virtual energy components are represented by real-time capable models describing their physical behaviour. In this contribution, a CHP unit is described as a virtual energy component. The modelling approach is based on a time domain approach using state variables of the multiple domains to describe the dynamic behaviour. Afterwards, the model is parameterized by datasheet specifications and measurement data of several CHP units with different power ratings. Based on these results, a method for scaling the proposed CHP model is presented. Especially for parameter studies, this method allows a simple adaption of a general parameterized CHP model. Moreover, a method for scaling such models with respect to the modelling depth is proposed and exemplarily applied to the electrical generator of the CHP model. This scaling method enables the model adaptations for different simulation purposes like detailed investigations of single structures and holistic investigations of large combined grid systems.}},

For testing electronic equipment, hardware-in-the-loop simulation is a today's standard method in the automotive industry. Hardware-in-the-loop simulation requires a real-time capable model of the plant but the development of those models of power electronic circuits is still an ambitious task due to the switching of the semiconductors devices. In this contribution, a FPGA-based hardware-in-the-loop simulation of a rectifier with power factor correction will be presented. First a short introduction on modelling methods for real-time simulation of power electronics and the rectifier with power factor correction is given. Furthermore, the modeling of the rectifier and the power factor correction stage and the simulation algorithm are described. Finally, the implementation of the hardware-in-the-loop simulation and measurement results from the real plant are presented and compared to the simulation results.}},

In this contribution, a novel approach for real-time simulation of power electronic circuits comprising fast FPGA-based output models is presented. Two types of modeling circuits are described and compared to each other. Both methods do not fulfill the requirements of the novel approach to combine the advantages of the processor- and FPGA-based simulation. Hence, parts of both methods were combined. Additionally, the switching event detection was improved for low latency reaction and a correction method based on average control is described. The simulation results matches to the reference very well. Therefore the novel approach Is an interesting alternative for hardware-in-the-loop simulation when the algorithm of the electronic control unit requires a very fast reaction on switching events.}},

The following is excluded from the scope:
- Requirements for the design, development or further functionality of active infeed applications.
- Probability of interactions or influences of the AIC with other equipment caused by parasitic elements in an installation or caused by poor electronic design as well as their mitigations.
- 'Overhead line' power supply networks because of lack of information (measurements) of their three phase impedances. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
a) IEC TS 62578, in its revised version includes observed values out of practical applications for emission values below 150 kHz.
b) Therefore the document has been extended compared to the first edition, several detailed analysis results are given in the extended Annexes.
c) Design recommendations have been derived from the international working group by an assessment of the power supply impedances between 2 kHz and 9 kHz, a comprehensive analysis of the withstand capability of power capacitors against harmonic currents injected by AIC, immunity tests of equipment and considerations about shifted resonances in the power supply network with increased population of undamped filter capacitors. }},

elements, which limits the clarity of the machine operation and leads to higher cognitive demands in the machine operation. Due to the growing functional range of production machines the demand of usability for the operating systems continues to grow. The selection and design of icons for the identification of controls contributes significantly to usability, especially for intuitive operation of production machines.
The aim of this study is to investigate the intuitive usability of production machines, to consider its use of graphical elements (icons) and to derive recommendations for a demand-oriented selection and design of icons. To achieve this goal, laboratory studies at five modern production machines (laser sintering machine, CNC universal lathe, plastic injection molding machine, laser processing machine, woodworking machine) - each with different operating concept - were performed. The results of the study show that the used symbols in the examined machines are only limited self-explanatory and intuitive, and thus have significant deficits for easy and intuitive operation. Especially the combination of screens and electronic keys or switches was often criticized and leads to uncertainty in the operation. As a result, recommendations for the design of icons on production machines are given. }},

This includes smart human machine interfaces, which reduce the chances of errors and help to make the right decisions. This paper presents an approach to equip the maintenance software running on a tablet PC with augmented reality functionality to be able to place virtual sticky notes at production modules. Additionally, these sticky notes are enriched with position information. The central element of this approach is an ontology-based context-aware framework, which aggregates and processes data from different sources. As a result, a tablet PC application was implemented, which allows displaying maintenance information as well as live plant process data in the form of augmented reality. More than 100 of those sticky notes can be placed using this system, whereas each note requires a file size of 12 to 16 kilo bytes. After placing a sticky note, the system recognizes it even if the camera's position is not exactly the same as during the placing process.}},

This paper focuses on how to coach a user so that his/her motion gets closer to the good template of a target motion. It is important to efficiently advise the user to emulate the crucial features that define the good template. The proposed system (1) automatically mines the crucial features of any kind of motion from a set of motion features and (2) gives the user feedback about how to modify the motion through an intuitive interface. The crucial features are mined by feature sparsification through binary classification between the samples of good and other motions. An interface for motion coaching is designed to give feedback via different channels (e.g., visually, aurally), depending on the type of error. To use the total system, all the user must do is just move and then get feedback on the motion. Following experimental results, open problems for future work are discussed.}},

However, due to financial reasons it is not feasible to exchange existing industrial production lines with the new I4.0 ready technologies at once. Therefore this paper will propose a retrofitting approach for the gradual migration to I4.0 by providing a defined schedule with milestones and showing different problems which can occur during retrofitting. In addition to that a new business model called Retrofitting as a Service (RaaS) for future companies will be introduced to show a possible usage of retrofitting. }},

abstract = {{The University of Trieste (Università degli Studi di Trieste) and the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences introduced the International Double Degree Master Program ‘Production Engineering and Management’ in 2011. Its aim is to give students in Italy and Germany, along with other countries, the chance to learn the necessary abilities from lecturers and each other. This Master Program has been accompanied by the International Conference ‘Production Engineering and Management’ from the very beginning. The annual International Conference on Production Engineering and Management took place for the fifth time this year, and can therefore be considered a well-established event originating from the partnership between the University of Trieste (Italy) and the Ostwestfalen-Lippe
University of Applied Sciences (Germany). The main aim of the five conferences has been to bridge the gap between production engineering and management theory and practice, by offering a platform where academia and industry could discuss practical and pressing questions. In this respect, the fifth conference (PEM 2015) continues along the same path of the first four successful conferences, which were held in Pordenone (2011), Lemgo (2012), Trieste (2013) and again in Lemgo (2014). PEM 2015 benefited further from contributions from other universities and from research and industry projects. Especially the contributions of successful graduates of the double degree Master’s program Production Engineering and Management and those of other postgraduate researchers from several European count ries have been enforced in this year. The title ‘An active interaction between university and industry’ introduced two years ago to emphasize lively cooperation proved to be more than appropriate in the conference’s main orientation:

•	To present current research projects and their results at a highly sophisticated scientific level
•	To discuss recent developments in industry and society
•	To bring professionals, specialists and students together
•	To enable professionals, lecturers and professors to exchange experiences
•	To familiarize young professionals and students with scientific conference procedures
•	To give postgraduate and Ph.D. students the chance to present a paper
•	To show the two partner regions’ uniqueness and performance
•	To attract students for an international career in the industry
•	To encourage students to be open-minded about different cultures, mentalities and manners

PEM 2015 took place between October 1 and 2, 2015 at the University of
Trieste. The program was defined by the Organizing and Scientific Committees and clustered into five scientific sessions. Both universities and their partner organizations debated on these topics by reporting their research, experiences and success stories. The scientific sessions dealt with technical and engineering issues, as well as management topics, and included contributions by researchers from academia and industry. The extended abstracts and full papers of the
contributions underwent a double-blind review process. The 35 accepted presentations were assigned, according to their subject, to one of the following sessions:, ‘Industrial Engineering and Lean Management’, ‘Technology and Supporting Services for Manufacturing’, ‘Product Lifecycle, from Concept to Market and Use’, ‘Supply Chain Design and Management’ and ‘Management Practices and Methodologies’. These sessions have been carefully selected by the organizing and scientific committees and are aimed at highlighting some of the current production industry’s most discussed topics. Therefore, the articles sustainability and revolutionary developments in modern industry and cover not only production in a narrower sense, but also new aspects of: innovation and
product development, of supply chains, of quality improvement. The proceedings have been drawn together to form 35 full papers of the scientific contributions. The articles were reviewed by the Scientific Committee before being accepted.
As the editors of the proceedings, we would like to thank all contributors, the
referees who accepted the burden of reviewing the abstracts as well as the full papers and the members of the Organizing Committee and Scientific Committee for planning such an effective conference.}},

abstract = {{Many low-cost 3D printers have been brought to market over the last couple of years. Most of them apply a Fused Layer Manufacturing (FLM) process, and have made 3D printing a great success amongst hobbyists, the maker community and students. One drawback of such inexpensive equipment is a limited build envelope, which prevents this from becoming a significant contributor to industrial production. To overcome these limits, it is not sufficient to simply upscale dimensions, but the overall concept of such machines must be completely re-thought, as well as the concepts behind several building blocks, components and the process software system.
Problems such as shrinkage of build material, support material and machine parts in combination with long printer head travels, temperature distribution and moisture effects all have to be solved. In addition, larger parts need longer process times. Therefore, reduction of process times and an increase in productivity are necessary in order to enable economic production.
Some of these problems can be solved by using more than one printer head for production, by using new materials and inventing new nozzle systems as distinct solutions for big printers. Nevertheless, to solve all these problems, the development of special machines for large parts is necessary: not component-wise but as a whole system. Large parts could then be successfully produced in several industries, using large, inexpensive FLMmachines.

Topography based approaches achieve higher correlation to human perception but are often based on linear measurement which cannot be applied for an overall assessment of larger surfaces. Thus an algorithm was developed to calculate a specific value based on topographic features, such as orange peel, within the research project ‘Development of a comprehensive quality concept for furniture high gloss surfaces’, funded by the federal Ministry of Education and Research. For the evaluation of short waved structures on furniture high gloss surfaces the ratio of hill height to hill area was chosen. This parameter proves to be applicable for an evaluation of the extent of a single.

abstract = {{This paper is aimed to discuss current research using data mining techniques and industry statistics in production environments. The general research approach is based on the idea of using data mining processes and techniques of industry statistics to find rare and hidden patterns behind failures of complex components. A case study will be applied to illustrate how the technique is carried out and where the limits of this approach occur. The case study deals with a component supplier of printing machines, which received an increasing number of client complaints, all related to one distinct problem. The observed failures seem to occur only among clients with very high quality standards. The affected component undergoes a very complex production process with several steps in different departments. Every single production unit records data information from multiple process variables and at different points in time. In the beginning there was no understanding of the failure causes in production at all. Therefore a huge amount of production data had to be analyzed to find the pattern that discloses the failure.
The data mining process starts with a first step in which the given data sets are prepared and then cleaned. Followed up by building a prediction model. The aim is to detect the root causes for failures and to predict potential failures in affected components. This paper shows how to use data mining to get the answer on pressing production failures.

abstract = {{Order picking has long been identified as the most labor costly and intensively activity in warehouse management. The orders from the customers need to be fulfilled tightly and timely. In order to keep the required high service level, the warehouse has to increase the picking productivity under the constraints of limited capacity. This paper concerns a man-togoods order picking system, in which the order pickers have to drive with a pallet jack to the storage locations. Considering that the orders are mostly small orders which consist of less lines, it is efficient to combine severalsingle customer orders into one picking order. Under this circumstance, this paper intends to answer the question of how customer orders should be grouped into picking orders with the aim of minimizing the total travel length through the warehouse. Consequently the productivity of the order picking system can be improved. An optimization problem for order batching is introduced. The optimization method of order batching is then proposed. Based on the simulation of different scenarios of incoming orders, it can be concluded that the developed method is effective in improving the productivity of the concerned order picking system.

abstract = {{Optical interconnects on printed circuit board level are a promising choice to support high bandwidth for short distance interconnects. These interconnects consists of highly multimode step index waveguides with rectangular core cross sections. Therefore ray tracing is an excellent method to determine the optical path parameters, e.g. optical power, ray path lengths and local ray directions. Based on these parameters the step response, the transient transfer function and the coupling behavior can be calculated. Classical ray tracing methods calculates the optical path parameters of each ray by successively computing internal reflections until a termination condition is reached. Therefore the computing time depends on the number of internal reflections. If the optical waveguide consists of cascaded straight and curved segments, e. g. point-to-point interconnects, one can use the analytic ray tracing method to determine the optical path parameters. The whole path parameters of each ray are determined by one analytical computation. The computing time depends on the number of segments. The analytic ray tracing method is unusable to determine ray path parameters of segments with varying core cross sections, e.g. tapers, crossings, splitters and combiners.}},

abstract = {{Coagulation is an essential process for the removal of suspended and colloidal material from water and wastewater. However, no comprehensive or universally accepted mathematical description of the process has been developed so far. Therefore, process optimization and control is usually based on data from jar tests and simple flow-proportional dosing concepts, while more accurate concepts based on water quality parameters that can be measured online are emerging. In addition, there have been attempts to develop software sensors and control schemes that involve advanced mathematical analyses of these parameters. The paper presents an overview of the parameters and physical sensors that are used for feed-forward and feed-backward control schemes and the experiences that have been made with their implementation. abstract = {{Many workspaces in open-plan offices suffer from high noise levels and undesired transmissions of speech noise between the users. These are leading to increased distraction by irrelevant speech information. This acoustical overall situation has serious consequences for the working environment: concentration- and performance loss as well as impairments of mood and well-being. Surveys on disturbing sounds have proven that human language distracts much more than sounds that are generated by natural sources or technical devices. Especially in times of changing working structures, when flexible spaces promoting interaction gain an increasing importance, room acoustics have to ensure that all negative impairments caused by noise and speech sound are prevented. Different measures and concepts come into question for acoustical optimization: absorption, shielding and sound-masking. Absorption can be achieved by means of acoustically-effective ceilings, floorings or furniture although these singular measures are often not sufficient. Sophisticated sound-absorbing systems are in the market. To reduce disturbing speech information sufficiently, advanced sound-shielding measures between the working areas are required. To efficiently prevent speech-like noise an adaptive sound-masking system in combination with visually adapted shielding elements should be developed, tested and implemented for open-plan offices in the presented research. The studies have shown that the design of these absorbing and shielding elements is a relevant factor as any conformity between spatial design and sound helps to improve the user acceptance. It was further verified by tests that permanent movements in the peripheral field of vision of the test persons were perceived as distracting and annoying. Thus the sound-masking was placed outside the field of vision. In general the user acceptance of masking sounds was assessed more positively when combined with a visualisation (e.g. covering with „leaves“) compared to the variant without any covering. But the whole system has to be further developed.}},

abstract = {{Diet change and fatness are supposed to challenge the immune system of the cow. Therefore, immunological and haematological consequences of adaptation to and continued feeding of a high-energy diet were studied in eight non-pregnant, non-lactating Holstein cows over 16 weeks. Blood haptoglobin concentration remained unaltered, suggesting that an acute phase reaction was not induced. Stimulation ability of peripheral blood mononuclear cells and stimulated oxidative burst capacity of granulocytes increased significantly in the course of the experiment after an initial drop. While total leucocyte counts increased, the proportion of granulocytes increased and that of lymphocytes decreased at the same time as the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ lymphocytes did. Capability of rumen microbes to detoxify the immune-modulating mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON) was not compromised as indicated by the exclusive presence of de-DON as the detoxified DON metabolite in blood. In conclusion, both diet change and prolonged positive energy balance influenced the bovine immune system.}},
