The trend of increasing technological complexity of machines mainly correlates with the integration of additional functions in machines. Increasing functionality of the machines leads to a cumulative number of control elements, which limits the clarity of the machine Operation and leads to higher cognitive demands in the machine operation. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate technological trends of the design of production machines. Based on this, the importance of ergonomics for production machines and concrete design recommendations with reference to study results of investigations on production machines are presented. Dazu zählen unter anderem Markierungs- bzw. abstract = {{The requirements for the configuration of assembly systems are changing. With innovation times and product life cycles constantly being shortened, as well as an increasing number of variants and small batches contributing to this phenomenon, industries are faced with the challenge to create efficient processes with high process capability. In particular, assembly errors happen because of activities with larger work content and fluctuating demands. In addition, under these conditions often quantity or rather productivity targets are missed. The reasons for this are the insufficient support of learning processes for new employees as well as the missing preparation of assembly information, which should be designed to be spotted quickly and implemented intuitively correct. In a study at the Laboratory of Industrial Engineering of the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences, a prototype of a projection based assistance system for manual assembly has been developed and tested. The system contains functionalities for ergonomic display of work instructions. These include, markers and precise positioning representations corresponding with these, a pick-to-light function and other features. By adapting the representation to the context-sensitive information, the complexity of large work contents can be made manageable.}},

From the perspective of sellers and buyers of goods and services in Germany, Google can be seen as a gatekeeper to the Internet and thus as an essential facility. It is shown that Google Shopping represents a typical club good. Therefore, welfare-optimal rules must be adhered. In this context, it should be noted that in the current Google Shopping search results, artificial rivalry is created among the sellers to get the maximum willingness to pay for a top listing. The proposed solution in this paper provides a summary score list of all sellers of a particular product for which a quantitative independent contribution should be required instead of a fee.
}},

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is strongly associated with coronary artery disease (CAD). We established a prospective observational nationwide multicenter registry to evaluate current treatment and outcomes in patients with both CKD and angiographically documented CAD.

Methods: In 32 cardiological centers 3,352 CAD patients with ≥50% stenosis in at least one coronary artery were enrolled and classified according to their estimated glomerular filtration rate and proteinuria into one of five stages of CKD or as a control group.

Results: 2,723 (81.2%) consecutively enrolled patients suffered from CKD. Compared to controls, CKD patients had a higher prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, peripheral artery diseases, heart failure, and valvular heart disease (each p<0.001). Myocardial infarctions (p = 0.02), coronary bypass grafting, valve replacements and pacemaker implantations had been recorded more frequently (each p<0.001). With advanced CKD, the number of diseased coronary vessels and the proportion of patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) increased significantly (both p<0.001). Percutaneous coronary interventions were performed less frequently (p<0.001) while coronary bypass grafting was recommended more often (p = 0.04) with advanced CKD. With regard to standard drugs in CAD treatment, prescriptions were higher in our registry than in previous reports, but beta-blockers (p = 0.008), and angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors and/or angiotensin-receptor blockers (p<0.001) were given less often in higher CKD stages. In contrast, in the subgroup of patients with moderately to severely reduced LVEF the prescription rates did not differ between CKD stages. In-hospital mortality increased stepwise with each CKD stage (p = 0.02).

Conclusions: In line with other studies comprising CKD cohorts, patients' morbidity and in-hospital mortality increased with the degree of renal impairment. Although cardiologists' drug prescription rates in CAD-REF were higher than in previous studies, they were still lower especially in advanced CKD stages compared to cohorts treated by nephrologists.}},

abstract = {{Background: Data capture is one of the most expensive phases during the conduct of a clinical trial and the increasing use of electronic health records (EHR) offers significant savings to clinical research. To facilitate these secondary uses of routinely collected patient data, it is beneficial to know what data elements are captured in clinical trials. Therefore our aim here is to determine the most commonly used data elements in clinical trials and their availability in hospital EHR systems.

Methods: Case report forms for 23 clinical trials in differing disease areas were analyzed. Through an iterative and consensus-based process of medical informatics professionals from academia and trial experts from the European pharmaceutical industry, data elements were compiled for all disease areas and with special focus on the reporting of adverse events. Afterwards, data elements were identified and statistics acquired from hospital sites providing data to the EHR4CR project.

Results: The analysis identified 133 unique data elements. Fifty elements were congruent with a published data inventory for patient recruitment and 83 new elements were identified for clinical trial execution, including adverse event reporting. Demographic and laboratory elements lead the list of available elements in hospitals EHR systems. For the reporting of serious adverse events only very few elements could be identified in the patient records.

Conclusions: Common data elements in clinical trials have been identified and their availability in hospital systems elucidated. Several elements, often those related to reimbursement, are frequently available whereas more specialized elements are ranked at the bottom of the data inventory list. Hospitals that want to obtain the benefits of reusing data for research from their EHR are now able to prioritize their efforts based on this common data element list.}},

abstract = {{Hutchinson and Löffler's (1956) classification of lakes based on the seasonal thermal mixing regime has become a cornerstone of any analysis of lakes as elements of the earth surface. Until now however the lake classification has lacked a physically sound quantitative criterion distinguishing between two fundamental lake types: thermally stratified during a large portion of the year (mono- and dimictic) and predominantly mixed to the bottom (polymictic). Using the mechanistic balance between potential and kinetic energy we review the different formulations of the Richardson number to derive a generalized scaling for seasonal stratification in a closed lake basin. The scaling parameter is the critical mean basin depth, Hcrit, that delineates lakes that mix regularly from those that stratify seasonally based on lake water transparency, lake length, and an annual mean estimate for the Monin-Obukhov length. We validate the scaling on available data of lakes worldwide using logistic regression. The scaling criterion consistently described the mixing regime significantly better than either the conventional unbounded basin scaling or a simple depth threshold. Thus, the generalized scaling is universal for freshwater lakes and allows the seasonal mixing regime to be estimated without numerically solving the heat transport equations.}},

abstract = {{Water transparency affects the thermal structure of lakes and within certain lake depth ranges, it can determine whether a lake mixes regularly (polymictic regime) or stratifies continuously (dimictic regime) from spring through summer. Phytoplankton biomass can influence transparency but the effect of its seasonal pattern on stratification is unknown. Therefore we analysed long term field data from two lakes of similar depth, transparency and climate but one polymictic and one dimictic and simulated a conceptual lake with a hydrodynamic model. Transparency in the study lakes was typically low during spring and summer blooms and high in between during the clear water phase (CWP), caused when zooplankton graze the spring bloom. The effect of variability of transparency on thermal structure was stronger at intermediate transparency and stronger during a critical window in spring when the rate of lake warming is highest. Whereas the spring bloom strengthened stratification in spring, the CWP weakened it in summer. The presence or absence of the CWP influenced stratification duration and under some conditions determined the mixing regime. Therefore seasonal plankton dynamics, including biotic interactions that suppress the CWP, can influence lake temperatures, stratification duration and potentially also the mixing regime.}},

Two experiments were therefore conducted with 153 German kindergarten children aged 3–6 years that provide first evidence for childhood attitude formation in terms of evaluative conditioning. Specifically, it was found that children preferred novel stimuli previously paired with liked stimuli over novel stimuli previously paired with disliked stimuli. This effect occurred independently of age, generalized toward similar novel stimuli, and did not depend on children's recollection of how stimuli were paired. The findings are discussed in terms of the processes underlying childhood attitude formation, and implications for related research areas are highlighted.
}},

Its general idea is to create an Internet of Things consisting of communicating machines, which implement concepts for self-configuration, -diagnosis, and -optimisation. The realisation of these functionalities is in focus of current research and gains in importance not only in the industrial sector. The overall goal is to equip technical systems with intelligence to enable for autonomous behaviour. Therefore, tasks like information processing, extensive networking, or system monitoring using sensor and information fusion systems have to be reconsidered. This contribution focuses on the design and maintenance of sensor and information fusion systems and presents a preliminary evaluation of a design concept for such applications. The concept is developed to automatically configure sensor and information fusion systems, which is a time-consuming and complex task when carried out manually. It reduces the perceived complexity of the application and supports the designer during design and maintenance of the sensor and information fusion system.}},

In this paper, we propose an approach to detect anomalies and attacks on ATMs via motif discovery. Motifs are frequently unknown occurring sequences or events in a time series signal. State of the ATM is captured by innovative piezoelectric sensor networks to analyse the occurring vibrations. The captured signals are inspected by the Complex Quad-Tree Wavelet Packet transform which provides broad frequency analysis of a signal in various scales. abstract = {{In industrial processes a vast variety of different sensors is increasingly used to measure and control processes, machines, and logistics. One way to handle the resulting large amount of data created by hundreds or even thousands of different sensors in an application is to employ information fusion systems. Information fusion systems, e.g. for condition monitoring, combine different sources of information, like sensors, to generate the state of a complex system. The result of such an information fusion process is regarded as a health indicator of a complex system. Therefore, information fusion approaches are applied to, e.g., automatically inform one about a reduction in production quality, or detect possibly dangerous situations. Considering the importance of sensors in the previously described information fusion systems and in industrial processes in general, a defective sensor has several negative consequences. It may lead to machine failure, e.g. when wear and tear of a machine is not detected sufficiently in advance. In this contribution we present a method to detect faulty sensors by computing the consistency between sensor values. The proposed sensor defect detection algorithm exemplarily utilises the structure of a multilayered group-based sensor fusion algorithm. Defect detection results of the proposed method for different test cases and the method's capability to detect a number of typical sensor defects are shown.}},

New paradigms arise in the context of the fourth industrial revolution by bringing together mechatronic systems and information technologies. Tasks like information processing, extensive networking, or system monitoring using sensor and information fusion systems are incorporated with the aim to design applications that are capable for self-configuration, -diagnosis, and -optimisation. This contribution focuses on the design of sensor and information fusion systems. A methodology for the design process of such systems is proposed that serves as tool for auto-configuration to facilitate self-diagnosis and -optimisation.}},

abstract = {{Sensors, and also actuators or external sources such as databases, serve as data sources in order to realise condition monitoring of industrial applications or the acquisition of characteristic parameters like production speed or reject rate. Modern facilities create such a large amount of complex data that a machine operator is unable to comprehend and process the information contained in the data. Thus, information fusion mechanisms gain increasing importance. Besides the management of large amounts of data, further challenges towards the fusion algorithms arise from epistemic uncertainties (incomplete knowledge) in the input signals as well as conflicts between them. These aspects must be considered during information processing to obtain reliable results, which are in accordance with the real world. The analysis of the scientific state of the art shows that current solutions fulfil said requirements at most only partly. This article proposes the multilayered information fusion system MACRO (multilayer attribute-based conflict-reducing observation) employing the μBalTLCS (fuzzified balanced two-layer conflict solving) fusion algorithm to reduce the impact of conflicts on the fusion result. The performance of the contribution is shown by its evaluation in the scope of a machine condition monitoring application under laboratory conditions. Here, the MACRO system yields the best results compared to state-of-the-art fusion mechanisms. The utilised data is published and freely accessible.}},

abstract = {{Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are developed to reduce the fuel consumption and the emission of carbon dioxide. Besides the series, parallel and power split configurations as commonly used for conventional hybrid electric vehicles, multimode transmissions are in particular used for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, which enable to switch between different modes like parallel or series operation of combustion engine and electric motor. Based on cost efficient configurations of multimode transmissions, improved concepts have already been discussed and presented. These concepts comprise novel structures and multi-speed operation for the combustion engine or the electric motor, respectively. For improving the fuel and energy consumption, a simulation based optimization of a multimode transmission is applied. Since the development of corresponding transmission models is a time-consuming and error-prone task, a method for an automated generation of transmission models is present in this contribution. The generated transmission models are integrated into an overall stationary powertrain model, which is used to optimize an operating strategy and the gear ratios of a multimode transmission with respect to fuel and energy consumption. The optimization is applied to a two and a three speed transmission for the internal combustion engine and to a two speed transmission for the electric motor. Afterwards, the optimization results as well as the fuel and energy saving results are presented.}},

A model based approach can be used for validating the thermal design of those systems in any suitable modular configuration. This contribution is focused on an equivalent lumped thermal network model for a modular inverter system on a given heat sink concept. The proposed network representation is based on spatial splitting of the heat sink geometry whereby the lumped network elements are parametrized by means of the heat sink geometry. Since the proposed network is easy and straightforward, a minimum of variables are introduced to adjust the temperature results empirically with FEM results on certain reference operation points. Furthermore, modularity is considered due to the coolant and therefore, customer specific placement of modules can be investigated. Finally, the proposed model is compared with FEM results of a worst case system configuration, the influence of the introduced adjustment variables is shown and further validation results with thermal measurements and FEM results of different system configurations are given.}},

abstract = {{This paper introduces an efficient modular solution kit for intralogistic drives, which reduces the total energy consumption of all drives in an automated warehouse by more than 15%. The reduction of energy consumption results from the interaction of optimized components (motors, control techniques and regeneration units), which are described in detail in this paper. Different motor concepts like the induction motor, the synchronous reluctance motor and the permanent magnet synchronous machine are compared according to the special requirements for intralogistics applications. Different control techniques are presented in order to achieve sensorless and efficient-optimal operation of these motors. The sensorless control technique uses signal injection to detect the rotor position sufficiently exact also in case of speed near standstill. Efficient-optimal operation is achieved by reducing the motor current with regard to the torque (MTPA-control). Furthermore this paper introduces a regeneration unit that can be connected between the DC link of frequency inverters and the mains to feed back regenerative energy. The regeneration unit consisting of a buck converter, a synchronous inverter and a line-filter can work in parallel to commonly used uncontrolled rectifiers. Its functioning is shown with the help of measurement results of a 1kW laboratory prototype. The last section shows a demonstrator in which a conventional conveyer system (with induction motor and braking resistor) is compared with an optimized one using the presented components. Power versus time measurements show specific energy savings resulting from the interaction of the optimized components.}},

Both humans and computers have specific strengths and weaknesses and integrating humans into machine learning processes might be a very efficient way for tackling problems. However, application areas of such systems are rarely discussed within the Industry 4.0 community. Most assistive systems that have been presented have been developed for specific task, such as assembly support or warehouse picking, but there might be a huge uncovered design space to be explored. With this work, we want to step back from existing systems and analyze the design opportunities of assistive systems especially for small and medium-size enterprises (SME). To achieve this goal we conducted a study in four SME, consisting of observations and interviews. Here we present our findings about the potential future application areas of human-centered assistive systems.}},

Together with a medium-sized manufacturer of industrial laundry machines we applied the human-centered design process in an industrial context. Assistive systems providing instructions at the workplace have been proposed to overcome increasing cognitive demand during assembly tasks. Commercially available assistive systems provide spatially registered instructions, either by using in-situ projections or head-mounted displays (HMDs). As there is little empirical knowledge about the individual advantages and disadvantages of both approaches, we are interested in comparing both types of systems. Through a user study at a manual assembly workplace, we compare both approaches to a paper baseline. Our results reveal that both in-situ instructions and paper instructions lead to significantly faster task completion times and significantly fewer errors than HMDs. Using additional questionnaires and interviews, we are able to identify the shortcomings of HMD-based instructions and discuss the possibilities of using flexible in-situ instructions for worker assistance.}},

abstract = {{Additive Manufacturing (AM) increasingly enables the realization of structures, which have a much greater freedom of design und can therefore better use nature as a design ideal. Bionic design principles have already been introduced into general design approaches, and several topology optimization systems (TO) are available today to increase structural stiffness and to enable lightweight design. AM and TO, used in synergy, promise completely new application areas. However, staircase effects resulting from a layer-by-layer build process and unavoidable support structures which must be mechanically removed afterwards are disadvantageous with respect to surface texture and strength properties.
The present article addresses the question of how far the notches resulting from the staircase effect of Additive Manufacturing and the support structures removed decrease the strength of components. Most engineers try to follow the inner flow of forces in a part’s design by smoothening surfaces in notched areas. Considering this, a elected component is investigated with finite element analysis (FEA) with special regard for the concentration of tress arising from surface notch effects. An outlook is given as regards how a reduction of the notch effect from the taircase effect can be achieved effectively.}},

The objective is to shorten the time between quoting for individually designed products and their production and delivery. Therefore, reliable automated and fast evaluation procedures are needed to ensure the quality of the individually designed products in terms of product safety and reliability. This paper aims
to demonstrate how a metamodel, generated on simulated data, adapts to the type of product and delivers the required quality and evaluation procedure. The metamodel guarantees the requested characteristics of the final product without the consultation of human expert knowledge. As proof of concept, a simple, well-documented task from the field of construction has been chosen. The estimation from of the metamodel will meet all safety requirements, is based on the individual input variables and is confirmed without expert interaction. Fast, reliable prediction models deriving from complex simulation models are indispensable conditions for direct digital manufacturing. abstract = {{Additive Manufacturing (AM) describes a number of technologies that generate three-dimensional objects directly from CAD data by joining volume elements. Dental technology is one sector in which the benefits of AM come into effect, as parts such as frameworks or implants are unique objects often with freeform shapes. These objects are difficult and expensive to produce with subtractive or formative technology.
During the last decades, the application of digital technologies in the dental industry has increased. Therefore AM has also evolved to become a standard dental framework manufacturing process. While previously the dental laboratory did the complete manufacturing of dental frameworks, AM parts are usually produced by service providers, thus increasing the number of process participants. Under these circumstances, a reliable high quality production must be ensured. This requires a comprehensive Quality Management (QM) concept for the whole process chain. A first step in the evelopment of this QM concept is the definition of the product requirements, from which process specifications can be determined. These specifications build the basis for evaluating the process capability of the Additive Manufacturing process.}},

@inproceedings{273,
abstract = {{This paper introduces an efficient modular solution kit for intralogistic drives, which reduces the total energy consumption of all drives in an automated warehouse by more than 15%. Power versus time measurements show specific energy savings resulting from the interaction of the optimized components.}},

abstract = {{The invention relates to a circuit and to a method for operating an electrical machine (M) connected to at least three phases (L1, L2, L3) of a power supply network by means of a frequency converter (1) that has a DC link (3), wherein, by means of a synchronous inverter (7) that is actuated by a DC chopper (6) and comprises two bridge halves switching the positive and the negative half-waves respectively, the energy generated by said machine (M) is fed back into the power supply network. According to the invention, the synchronous inverter (7) has an asymmetrical design such that, to switch the potential tapped from the DC link (3) by the DC chopper (6), switching is carried out by a first bridge half (8) that consists of thyristors (S1, S3, S5) as electronic switches, and such that the second bridge half (9) comprises reverse-blocking electronic switches (S2, S4, S6) able to be switched off.}},

abstract = {{The annual International Conference on Production Engineering and Management takes place for the sixth time his year, and can therefore be considered a well - established event that is the result of the joint effort of the OWL University of Applied Sciences and the University of Trieste. The conference has been established as an annual meeting under the Double Degree Master Program ‘Production Engineering and Management’ by the two partner universities.
The main goal of the conference is to provide an opportunity for students, researchers and professionals from Germany, Italy and abroad, to meet and exchange information, discuss experiences, specific practices and technical solutions used in planning, design and management of production and service systems. In addition, the conference is a platform aimed at presenting research projects, introducing young academics to the tradition of
Symposiums and promoting the exchange of ideas between the industry and the academy. Especially the contributions of successful graduates of the Double Degree Master Program ‘Production Engineering and Management’ and those of other postgraduate researchers from several European countries have been enforced.

This year’s special focus is on Direct Digital Manufacturing in the context of Industry 4.0, a topic of great interest for the global industry. The concept is spreading, but the actual solutions must be presented in order to highlight
the practical benefits to industry and customers. Indeed, as Henning Banthien, Secretary General of the German
‘Plattform Industrie 4.0’ project office, has recently remarked, “Industry 4.0 requires a close alliance amongst the private sector, academia, politics and trade unions” in order to be “translated into practice and be implemented now”.
PEM 2016 takes place between September 29 and 30, 2016 at the OWL University of Applied Sciences in Lemgo. The program is defined by the Organizing and Scientific Committees and clustered into scientific sessions
covering topics of main interest and importance to the participants of the conference. The scientific sessions deal
with technical and engineering issues, as well as management topics, and include contributions by researchers from academia and industry. The extended abstracts and full papers of the contributions underwent a double -
blind review process. The 24 accepted presentations are assigned, according to their subject, to one of the following sessions: ‘Direct Digital Manufacturing in the Context of Industry 4.0’, ‘Industrial Engineering and Lean Management’, ‘Management Techniques and Methodologies’, ‘Wood Processing Technologies and Furniture Production’ and ‘Innovation Techniques and Methodologies.}},

abstract = {{In offices and most other working environments a high speech privacy and a low noise level is desired to allow for concentrated work and calm work conditions. Hence a low Speech Transmission Index (STI) is required, as even irrelevant speech information at lower volumes can be extremly disturbing and performance reducing. At the same time working environments demand for other - often conflicting - requirements such as transparency to ensure visual connections and daylight transmission, functional flexibility for diverse activities in the same space and for hygienic, environmental or security aspects. These requirements have to be balanced by a sensible and intelligent design and layout of absorbers and partition elements and partition. Three research projects investigated an optimised design of low and mid frequency absorbers for working environments to improve the acoustic and design quality of different products. Acoustically optimised indoor spaces may become more important in the future due to an increase of hearing impairments in the aging population as well as in the younger generations. This is seen not only as a technical but as a design challenge to balance optimised sound pressure levels, reverberation times and Speech Transmission Indices. © 2016, German Acoustical Society (DEGA). An outsourcing or relocation of assembly function abroad is not suitable in most cases. Therefore, it is increasingly important to reduce process variations and waste in manual assembly processes. Assistance systems have the potential, depending on the situation, to assist the worker in his work, to reduce error rate and to increase productivity. In a first part of the paper an overview will be given to different types of assembly assistance systems. Then a morphological chart is developed, which can provide assistance in selecting or comparing assembly assistance systems. With the help of this chart an assembly assistant system is presented. Finally a quick look is taken at further research being done in this area.}},

abstract = {{This paper provides information about an in-house research project for shadow box design. During this research project, several mockups with sensors for heat and relative humidity were produced and tested under two different laboratory conditions: one with artificial sunlight and one in an outdoor temperate climate.
The outdoor test provided information about temperature changes in the shadow box due to air infiltration and exfiltration. Further, it also provided information about the conservation of solar energy in the air cavity behind the spandrel glass and adjacent materials. Temperature sensors on the interior surfaces of the façade produced data that was used to draw conclusions about the heat flow from inside the shadow box to the interior ambient air via the façade profiles. It was also used to develop a two-dimensional simulation tool to show heat development and heat flow in the shadow box.
The test under laboratory conditions with artificial sunlight showed that the correct choice of glass type and color of the opaque back layer highly influences heat development in the shadow box cavity. The test results also illustrate that the size of ventilation openings and the depth of the air layer only slightly influence heat built-up in this cavity.
The shadow box is a very complex system that should be designed and manufactured so as not to have a detrimental effect on the thermal performance of the facade. To maintain precise and consistent reproduction and to improve the thermal performance, a new PVC shadow box profile was developed. PVC is a poor thermal conductor and, therefore, the heat flow from the shadow box construction into the interior becomes interrupted, consequently improving the heat transfer coefficients of the façade and the panel construction. Furthermore, the PVC profile has been designed as a four sided mitered and sealed frame insert to enable easy attachment of the opaque back layer, thus creating a weather tight assembly within the curtain wall day light opening. }},

abstract = {{Under the circumstance of advanced globalization, it is increasingly difficult for production companies to remain competitiveness. Many of them are forced to restrict budget and reduce production costs. In addition, the customization of product increases continuously. This results in extension of product variation and reduction of product life cycle. Therefore, the companies need a high flexibility to respond quickly to changes in the market and to customer requirements. Lean thinking, as a powerful tool, has been implemented by many companies in production and manufacturing. In order to avoid waste in lean manufacturing, it is necessary to manage efficiently the material flow. In this study, for a lean material handling system in the lean manufacturing of a company, an in-plant milk-run distribution system is taken into consideration. The system consistsof vehicles, which move periodically in certain routes. The materials are delivered in short intervals from a central storage area to several points of use in the production. By using milk-run in plant, the material handling processes can be standardized and therefore the waste can be eliminated. One additional aim of the study with milk-run distribution for the material provision is to minimize the handling time, which determines directly the personal costs. In order to realize the aim, the work has beendivided into several steps. At first, the production processes, especially the material provision for the production have been analyzed. Secondly, the technological solutions have been analyzed in order to handle different loading units required by different machines in the production. Thirdly, the milk-run distribution for lean production is formulated as an optimization problem with the object of minimizing the number of vehicles and the distance traveled under the constraints of specific time periods, capacity of vehicle and related stations etc. Fourthly, two optimization methods are developed in order to find the optimal solution for the milk-run problem and the performance of different methods is also compared.}},

abstract = {{Development engineers are most valued for their excellence in physical product development, but on the flipside, project managers face problems when trying to fit them into effectively running development processes. Because of the advantages of Lean Management in production (Lean Production), process managers often try to transfer lean principles directly to development processes, not considering that major differences exist between well-described production processes and new product development processes which include much more uncertainty and risk. Nevertheless, several lean principals are applicable in product development. This paper describes five lean development insights (LDIs) which were found when optimizing an entire product realization process. Lean principles have been examined and then translated to collaboration between product development and tool manufacturing at a globally operating German family-run company. These LDIs are meant to help project and process managers, consultants and developers to rethink their ways of organizing product development. The application of these insights will result in increased transparency, intensified collaboration, improved processes and quality, shortened lead times, and also eliminate waste.}},

abstract = {{Against the background of rising overhead costs in manufacturing companies the application of methods of overhead cost management is of increasing importance. Within this article existing approaches of cost management are explained in principle. Based on these approaches a new complementary approach of managing costs with the help of costs elasticity ratios is described by a case study. The method is based on the hypothesis that there are no fixed personnel costs, but personnel costs with different elasticity with respect to the volume of orders. Personnel costs elasticity (ε) is derived from the quotient of the relative change in personnel costs (k) and the relative change of the order volume (q) of a billing month (i). The method aims to increase the flexibility of overhead costs, but can also be applied with respect to so-called direct costs. In this case, the question arises as to what extent the direct costs actually develop proportional elastic over time.}},

It is the samefor the material flow system with automated guided vehicles (AGVs). To realize the flexibility and scalability, it is recommended to decentralized control the vehicles. As an attempt, a concept of swarm intelligence with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is proposed and introduced in this article. The concept is supposed to be used for automated guided vehicle systems in which objects have to be transported from place to place. Therefore the object has to be self-organized and has to manage its own transport. In this context the vehicles have to choose the most optimal transportation. Swarm intelligence is a topic which deserves a high level of attention as a method to realize high flexibility and scalability.}},

abstract = {{Due to steadily increased demand for customized products, as well as their enhanced complexity and shorter product lifecycles, companies in all industries require a reliable prediction of the expected product development costs from the very start of product realization. Incorrectly estimated project costs may lead to serious consequences in the course of a development project. For example, offers are most often based on such early cost estimations and consequently, a major safety margin has to be added, which may result in the refusal of an order. A too low estimation of the costs of aproduct development project, on the other hand, may result in a loss for the project. In this paper, a software tool is presented for the prediction of product development costs which offers the user the ability to create a more accurate prediction of project costs on the basis of a minimum of retrograde project information. By combining a parametric cost model and cost result with stochastic character, based on the Monte Carlo method, in one software system, it is possible to significantly improve projectcost estimations.}},

abstract = {{Namibia is the most arid country in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Cuvelai-Etosha Basin (CEB) in central northern Namibia in particular is experiencing various ecological and social-ecological challenges such as high climate variability, saline groundwater, dependence on Angola for freshwater supply, high population growth and density, and increasing urbanisation. These challenges make water supply and management difficult and threaten the livelihood of the local population and the health of the ecosystem. Facing up to these challenges, the German-Namibian research project CuveWaters has developed, adapted and set up different technologies as pilot plant s. The Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) concept of CuveWaters is based on a multi-resource-mix in which water is obtained from different sources (rainwater, floodwater, groundwater and wastewater) and used for various purposes. High quality water is used as drinking water; water of a relatively low quality is used for irrigation. In cooperation with the residents of four villages and one small town, the project partners are implementing different technologies to collect and store, produce, treat and reuse water. The implemented technologies are rain- and floodwater harvesting, groundwater desalination, and the combination of sanitation, wastewater treatment and water reuse. The aim is to improve peoples’ livelihood through research on innovative and adapted solutions which contribute to a successful and adapted application of IWRM. To this end, the project integrates science, technology and societal aspects in a transdisciplinary research approach by linking scientific knowledge from natural, engineering and social sciences with the everyday practices and know-how of the stakeholders involved. Thus, the technical aspects are complemented by a wide range of societal and scientific components, such as capacity development, monitoring, participation or knowledge management. These ensure societal embedding of the technologies and knowledge transfer. This paper will illustrate the transdisciplinary approach, implemented technologies and accompanying measures as well as key results.}},

Our research focuses on recent ways of combining energy and data transmission in single contactless transducers, enabling easy installation, maintenance and possible fulfilment of high protection classes. While this approach can typically be solved by combining Wifi and inductive energy transfer, the Wifi aspect is often limited by the available media access and channel occupation. Another issue is the real time capability of Wifi or other wireless transmission protocols like IEEE 802.15.4. While creating a new wireless or contactless standard is beyond the focus of this work, we concentrate on combining existing technologies and their interoperability. This includes powerline communication systems, near field data transmission and inductive energy transfer mechanisms.}},

After pre-treatment by the tannery that included batch-coagulation and sedimentation, the wastewater was treated by dissolved air flotation, a membrane bioreactor (MBR) and granular activated carbon (GAC) for polishing the MBR effluent. The average removal efficiency for organic substances in the MBR was 81% while total nitrogen could only be removed by 36%. The performance of the GAC column could be successfully predicted using adsorption parameters determined in laboratory experiments. A larger proportion of the organics in the MBR effluent was only weakly adsorbable, therefore the usable carbon capacity was limited as confirmed by the modelling approach. The results were used to outline the size of a technical plant with a volumetric loading rate of 3 kg COD/(m3*d) for the MBR and a specific carbon demand of about 1.8 kg/m3.
}},

  abstract     = {{
The service–profit chain (SPC) has served as a prominent guidepost for service managers and researchers alike. This meta-analysis provides the first comprehensive test of the SPC, showing that all the proposed links are statistically significant and substantial. However, the effect sizes vary considerably, partly according to the type of service provided. Meta-analytic structural equation models show that internal service quality translates into service performance through various mechanisms beyond employee satisfaction, and they highlight the importance of the service encounter and customer relationship characteristics for customer responses. The findings not only indicate the need to integrate complementary paths in the SPC framework but also challenge the implicit SPC rationale that firms should always maximize employee satisfaction and external service quality to optimize firm performance.
}},

  abstract     = {{
In this article, we examine corporate architecture as an effective signal to knowledge workers in the recruiting process. Two types of corporate architecture that are common in the knowledge economy are distinguished: traditional functionalist and new functionalist architecture. New functionalist architecture combines a flat, transparent facade with semi-open office layouts including areas for social interaction. Holistically these functional elements signal and symbolize a non-bureaucratic, non-hierarchical organization. A conjoint analysis provides a first attempt to quantify how much students care for new functionalist architecture. Students’ stated preferences imply that they would forgo on average 10% of their starting salary in order to work in the new functionalist rather than the traditional functionalist workplace. The magnitude of this effect supports the view that architecture matters for job choice. Limitations of our study and directions for future research are discussed.
}},

abstract = {{In offices and most other working environments a high speech privacy and a low noise level is desired to allow for concentrated work and calm work conditions. © 2016, German Acoustical Society (DEGA). abstract = {{Stachybotrys (S.) spp. are omnipresent cellulolytic molds. Some species are highly toxic owing to their ability to synthesize various secondary metabolites such as macrocyclic trichothecenes or hemolysins. The reliable identification of Stachybotrys at species level is currently limited to genome-based identification. This study aimed to establish a fast and reliable MALDI-TOF MS identification method by optimizing the pre-analytical steps for protein extraction for subsequent generation of high-quality fingerprint mass spectra. Eight reference strains of the American Type Culture Collection and the Technical University of Denmark were cultivated in triplicate (biological repetitions) for 2 days in malt extract broth. The mycelia (1.5 ml) were first washed with 75 % ethanol and an additional washing step with dimethyl sulfoxide (10 %) was added to remove unspecific low weight masses. Furthermore, mycelia were broken with roughened glass beads in formic acid (70 %) and acetonitrile. The method was successfully applied to a total of 45 isolates of Stachybotrys originating from three different habitats (indoor, feed, and food samples; n = 15 each): Twenty-seven isolates of S. chartarum and 18 isolates of S. chlorohalonata could be identified by MALDI-TOF MS. The data obtained exactly matched those obtained by genome-based identification. The mean score values for S. chartarum ranged from 2.509 to 2.739 and from 2.148 to 2.622 for S. chlorohalonata with a very good reproducibility: the relative standard deviations were between 0.3 % and 6.8 %. Thus, MALDI-TOF MS proved to be a fast and reliable alternative to identification of Stachybotrys spp. by nucleotide amplification and sequencing.}},
