  abstract = {{In Germany, there is much academic discourse on and scientific inquiry into pedagogical issues of science teaching and learning at the school level. Concepts like ‘Bildung’ (inquiry-based self-formation) or ‘Didaktik’ (instruction-based reflections on teaching) are almost directly associated with institutions or actors rooted in pedagogical departments. Unfortunately, those departments rarely focus on issues of science teaching and learning at the University level – and if they do so, they most often try to apply conceptions and models borrowed from upper or post-secondary education. The few research-based institutions that address specific issues of higher education are commonly fitted out so that they are nowhere near the impacts of research institutions covering teaching methodology in primary or secondary education, for example. Yet from an international perspective, the university as an institution does hold a great potential to improve educational practice in a systematic, cross-disciplinary and research-based way. Around the globe, more and more institutions rely on the notion of scholarship in this context: ‘The improvement of learning and teaching is dependent upon the development of scholarship and research in teaching’ (Prosser & Trigwell, 1999, p. 8). If incorporated at the heart of tertiary education, scholarship could contribute to develop new faculty in the German higher-educational sector.

Die Lösung liegt vor allem in einem grundsätzlichen Umdenken der bisherigen Herangehensweisen. abstract = {{Strategic environmental assessment (SEA) emerged from Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and was developed based on the procedural steps and understanding thereof, but with the goal to fulfil a more ‘strategic’ function. Federal level plans and programmes constitute the highest planning levels in Germany subject to SEA, as SEA for policies is not compulsory. In this article, we analyse the quality and procedural effectiveness of federal level SEA in Germany with the underlying hypothesis that federal level SEA might be more strategic than SEA at other planning levels, as it represents the highest tier. Therefore, we analysed three federal level SEA case studies in Germany according to a set of criteria and indicators based on international research outcomes, including SEA integration into decision-making, tiering, scoping, selection and assessment of alternatives, cumulative effects assessment, public participation, and monitoring. Results demonstrate that the procedural effectiveness of SEA practice at the federal level is limited in Germany, and the making of SEAs proved not to be as ‘strategic’ as its important role prior to subsequent planning processes and outcomes would suggest. Reasons include an alternatives assessment restricted to macro-siting instead of assessing scenarios of demand or system alternatives, tiering limited to general advice without specific guidance for subsequent planning levels, cumulative effects assessment limited to intra-plan effects, a lack of monitoring, and public participation limited to consultation on the environmental report. These findings support results from a variety of international studies. Reasons for limitations have been identified in current SEA regulations, prior policy-making, institutional settings, the institutions’ willingness to learn and limited quality management by the German Federal Environmental Agency. Thus, our recommendations aim to improve quality management and learning by initiating a federal level SEA forum to discuss federal level planning and SEA practice and related issues, expanding the federal EIA portal to SEAs, quality management by the German Federal Environmental Agency in every federal level SEA scoping process and for every federal level environmental report, and further research and development to improve SEA practice. However, the general question for SEA research might be whether SEA contributes to long-term institutional learning processes beyond individual SEA processes, and how those learning processes can be supported, for instance by quality management and capacity building.}},

  abstract = {{Existing urban water infrastructures need to be modified if they are to cope with such challenges as demographic change, energy sufficiency and resource efficiency. It is believed that less centralised and hence more flexible systems adapt better to changing conditions. The main goal of this paper is to compare conventional and novel urban water infrastructures in five model areas in two German cities with regard to their sustainability. The novel technical options comprise modules such as blackwater and greywater separation, treatment and reuse as well as heat recovery, which are believed to be much more resource efficient than conventional systems. An assessment framework was developed which is able to comprehend corresponding transformation processes. An integrated assessment was conducted using multi-criteria decision analysis. The assessment results show that no particular technical option prevails over all the others and that the performance of the various options in the assessment is influenced by the general conditions found in the model areas. However, it can be concluded that novel water infrastructures can compete with or even perform better than conventional ones, especially when ecological and social criteria are emphasized.}},

@article{10660,
  abstract = {{Digitalization changes the way people work to a considerable extent. It alters business models and process organizations of whole industries. The ensuing market dynamics and faster innovation cycles cause an increase in complexity. In this article, the interconnection of digitalization and complexity in work systems is analyzed. For this purpose, a framework for comparing relevant complexity definitions is developed. Moreover, complexity drivers in digitalized labor systems in six different organizational dimensions (process organization, organizational structure, technology, working conditions, product and personnel) are explored. 23 experts from the academic and industrial sector were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. The results of a qualitative content analysis show that the consideration of complexity and digitalization has extensive impact what becomes evident in interdependent relations amongst the organizational dimensions. Furthermore, complexity drivers in digitalized work systems are determined as a result of the analysis procedure. Finally, the implications of the expert interviews for cooperative forms of work are discussed. The concept of a “task complexity mountain range” is presented to explain the effect of task complexity on performance and motivation in the context of work groups.}},

This paper examines how digitalization relates to complexity in work systems with respect to relevant organizational fields of work organization. 23 semi-structured interviews with experts from science and economy were conducted and analyzed. Key findings are that digitalization has far-reaching, interrelated implications for all organizational fields. Moreover, digitalization-related aspects were identified which have the potential to increase complexity in work systems.}},

  abstract = {{The 2nd RMB Conference 2018 will be held in Coimbra, within the framework of the Colloquium ´Teaching through Design´ that is organised by the Department of Architecture and the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra, since 2012.
The RMB Conference is an activity of the European Erasmus Project “Reuse of Modernist Buildings – Design tools for sustainable transformations”, coordinated by Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe (Detmold, Germany), with the University of Coimbra, the University of Antwerp, the Instituto Superior Técnico Lisboa, the Technical University of Istanbul and Docomomo.
The conference will be organized in four sessions – tools, methods, interdisciplinarity, research – focusing on the fundaments and on the advanced issues of the design process related to the Reuse of Modernist Buildings (RMB).
Architecture education is facing new challenges due to crises of the globalisation and climate change, that has strong impacts on the role of the architect today. The profession is changing and therefore different ways of training architects are demanded. This question is especially relevant for the renovation of those urban areas where modernist buildings from the second part of the 20th century are waiting for strategic interventions – to be repaired, to be renewed, to be reconstructed or to be demolished.
The architect needs new tools because just drawing is not enough anymore to understand neither the building nor the people who live there. The methodologies are more complex because they have to integrate not only the technical and spatial dimension but also the social one. This inclusive approach demands not only for new tools but also needs the dialogue with other disciplines, promoting an effective interdisciplinarity. Considering these topics, the architecture classroom is becoming more lab than a workshop, where new tools and methods are researched and explored, developing hypotheses that are tested in the design studios.}},

  abstract = {{It is our pleasure to introduce the 8th edition of the International Conference on Production Engineering and anagement (PEM), an event that is the result of the joint effort of the OWL University of Applied Sciences and the University of Trieste. The conference has been established as an annual meeting under the Double Degree Master Program “Production Engineering and Management” by the two partner universities. This year the conference is hosted at the university campus in Lemgo, Germany.

The main goal of the conference is to offer students, researchers and professionals in Germany, Italy and abroad, an opportunity to meet and exchange information, discuss experiences, specific practices and technical solutions for planning, design, and management of manufacturing and service systems and processes. As always, the conference is a platform aimed at presenting research projects, introducing young academics to the tradition of symposiums and promoting the exchange of ideas between the industry and the academy.

This year’s special focus is on Supply Chain Design and Management in the context of Industry 4.0, which are currently major topics of discussion among experts and professionals. In fact, the features and problems of Industry 4.0 have been widely discussed in the last editions of the PEM conference, in which sustainability and efficiency also emerged as key factors. With the further study and development of Direct Digital Manufacturing
technologies in connection with new Management Practices and Supply Chain Designs, the 8th edition of the PEM conference aims to offer new and interesting scientific contributions.

The conference program includes 25 speeches organized in seven sessions. Two are specifically dedicated to “Direct Digital Manufacturing in the context of Industry 4.0”. The other sessions are covering areas of great interest and importance to the participants of the conference, which are related to the main focus: “Supply Chai n Design and Management”, “Industrial Engineering and Lean Management”, “Wood Processing Technologies and Furniture Production”, and “Management Practices and Methodologies”. The proceedings of the conference include the articles submitted and accepted after a careful double-blind refereeing process.}},

  abstract = {{Today radio based wireless communication technologies offer limited performance, whereas optical wireless com- munication systems (OWC) propose potentially a high performant, scalable communication system conforming to real time conditions. However, current studies imply, that OWCs still lack the necessary performance and robustness level for most wireless applications in industrial production environments. In this approach several types of noises for free-space optical communication systems are empirically analysed in an accredited, exemplary industrial production environment. While the channel noise is usually modelled by the signal to noise ratio it is found that real environments cannot be approximated by the usual static additive white gaussian noise. In this approach the accumulated measurement data represents the spectrum variation of different locations and times relating to different types of noise sources. The implementation in a total channel model allows the optimization of OWC designs like the channel access scheme or the modulation type concerning performance and robustness. Furthermore an additional measurement setup is proposed, capable of measuring and classifying existing noise sources in order to serve the design of OWC systems in industrial production environments.}},

Especially technologies for processing of metal, like Selective LaserMelting (SLM), arefocusedin this area. The shift from prototyping towards final part production results in enhanced requirements for repeatability and predictability of the part quality. Machine manufacturers offer process monitoring solutions for different aspects of the production process, like the powder bed surface, the melt pool, and the laser energy. Nevertheless, the significance of these systems is not fully proven and threshold values for the monitored process parameters have to be determined for each product individually. This impedes the development of suitable process control systems. The paper gives an overview ofexistingresearch approaches and available process monitoring systems for SLM and their applicability for predicting certain part characteristics. The existing solutions are evaluated based on own research results. Next, AM specific difficulties for the development of process control tools and possible solutions are discussed.}},

The paper discusses an experimental approach for the identification of influencing parameters in Selective Laser Melting; this consists of an evaluation of the mechanical and physical properties of final parts, depending on the chosen process parameters. The Design of Experiments is used to get valid results from a limited number of experiments. The research work focuses on the application of a Definitive Screening Design to identify the most important influencing parameters: Several parameters of the hatch and the contour exposure are varied, as well as the position and orientation of the samples in the build chamber. A maraging steel and a CoCr alloy are used, and the mechanical and physical properties of the samples are evaluated. The interdependencies between the variation of the factors and the observed properties are analyzed.}},

  abstract = {{Although it is recommended to store goods in a warehouse based on the principle of first in first out, it is still unavoidable to use block storage of storing, for example, long andbulky goods. If the major advantage of block storage in area saving is themost important, the companyhas to accept the removal principle of last in first out or in other words, first in last out. The last goods to be stocked are the first goods to be removed and the first stocked goods are the last to be removed. There are some special observations in the block storage concerned in this paper. The first one is that the goods in the storage ordered by the customers can often not be removed directly from the storage without any stock movement. Theaim is to not only benefit fromthe high-density storage solution but also decrease the negative influence of block storage, especially when pre-stocked goods must be removed at first. The second observation is that during one concerned time period, forexample, one day, there may be several operations of put-away and several operations of order picking for shipment preparation. The third observation is that before goods are put away to storage, which goods to be removed are not always predictable. The preplanned removal dates are quite often unexpected changed. In this paper, scenarios with different dynamic properties and stochastic probabilities have been concerned and defined. Strategies for the three main stages of put-away, i.e. stacking, pre-marshalingand retrieval are defined and examined developed. Simulations have been conducted to examine the strategies based on different scenarios. The aimis to select the right strategy which may reduce the overall relocation operations. It is expected that the sum of blocks movement during put-away i.e. stacking, pre-marshaling, and block retrieval is optimally minimized.}},

  abstract = {{The navigation technique has been always an important issue for guiding an automated guided vehicle (AGV). With the development of sensor technology, software engineering, andalgorithms, there is a spectrum of different navigation methods for AGVs. Inorder to avoid the additional environmental installation,so as to increase the flexibility of route planning, but to keep the positioning precision, more sensors, such as light detection and ranging (LIDAR), wheel encoders and gyroscope are installed on the vehicles to be automated. Some intelligent algorithms such as simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms and Monte Carlo localization have been developed for the navigation of vehicles, including position and orientation. The interesting question, especially for the AGVmanufacturers, is: which algorithm is more suitable for which kind of applications. The suitabilityof an algorithm for the navigation of AGVs with facilities of Light Detection and Ranging(LIDAR), encoders and gyroscope ismainly determined by four properties. They are the positioning precision, computational costs, execution time and positioning repeatability. This paper intends to investigate the suitability of an algorithm or a navigation method for AGVs with LIDAR, wheel encoders,and gyroscope. The two aspects of positioningaccuracy and repeatability are especially concerned. A general comparison of different navigation methods and algorithms is given. An experimental platform with a basic vehicle, controlling system and sensors is then developed to further evaluate the algorithms. The hardware components and software components are compatible to robot operating system (ROS). This open-source robotics middleware provides services and tools for creating robot applications. As ROS SLAM nodes, open-source SLAM algorithms can be evaluated relatively easily without any rewriting or modification of the algorithms. As a new research field, there is not jet a SLAM algorithm, which is predominant absolutely.}},

These factors determine the ultimate choice of a particular alternative from a wide range of solution alternatives.On the one hand, the warehouse planning process is very complex and takes into account all different aspects of decision-making. On the other hand, it is expected that the planning period is shorter and shorter. To balance out the competing interests of accuracy and time, it is a promising approach to make use of computer-based planning tools. They can be used to find the most cost-efficientalternative and to visualize its layout.In addition, at the end of the planning process not only technologies and layout dimensions are specified, the warehouse layout with the rack configuration, the conveyors and the buildings should be visualized in three dimensions.It is a promising approach to integrate the detailed layout drawing through computer-aideddesign tools such as AutoCAD Inventor into warehouse planning process. Softwareis developed for detailed warehouse planning. The core modules of the software can generate a favorable warehouse alternative and an AutoCAD-Add-On for the visualization of the outcomes.With the planning tool,the planning period can be significantly shortened while simultaneously the planning quality, especially during the period of rough planning, increases.To balance out the competing interests of accuracy and time, it is a promising approach to make use ofcomputer-basedplanning tools. abstract = {{A paradigm shift in the field of maintenance is essential for companies due to a progressive digitalization of production processes. Therefore, the new paradigm considersall phases of a system, from procurement, operation through to the recycling of the machine. Initially, at the start of the cycle manufacturers of machines and equipment have to focus on design, implementation and quality assurance in compliance with the requirements for operation and maintenance to minimize lifecycle cost. During operation,an efficient strategy for maintaining must be defined. Based on the introduced paradigm a maintenance check is presented, able to provide orientation to small and middle-sizedenterprises regarding their maintenance situation and level. The respective level is described on basis of the degree of maturity. Regarding further steps, it is the fundament for strategic decisions and activities.}},

  abstract = {{The digitization of the industry requires smart products and services. Smart products are mechatronic products with an increasing amount of software. To get high quality smart products to the market quickly, manufacturers need to reshape their product lifecycle processes. They need to apply system engineering-based methods to enable smooth cross-domain developments with a special focus on the software domain. One significant challenge faced by manufacturers is the harmonization of product lifecycle management (PLM), which addresses the hardware lifecycle, with application lifecycle management (ALM), which addresses the software lifecycle.

To support manufacturers in this challenging activity, this paper demonstrates a proven process for developing use cases and requirements associated with a PLM/ALM integration. This process has been elicited during an industrial case study in a manufacturing company. This paper explains this process in detail. A generally applicable approach for developing the requirements of a PLM/ALM integration is extracted by removing the company-specific factors. }},

They were identified to species level using MALDI-TOF MS, sequence and phylogeny analysis of the 16S rRNA and species specific multiplex qPCR. The results of all three methods were concordant. The majority of isolates were identified as C. tagluense-like Group I (n = 34) and Group II (n = 42). Thirty-five isolates could be identified to species level as follows: C. estertheticum (n = 15), C. frigoriphilum (n = 13), C. frigidicarnis (n = 1) and C. bowmanii (n = 5). This is the first report of detection and identification of C. frigoriphilum and C. tagluense-like Group II as causative agents of blown pack spoilage of beef. The species specific multiplex qPCR developed in this study could be applied to identify and to quantify the Clostridium species described above in suspicious meat juice samples.}},

Fruits and vegetables have increasingly been related to foodborne outbreaks. Besides surface contamination, a possible internalization of microorganisms into edible parts of plants during growth has already been observed. To examine an actual risk for the consumer, microbial contamination of the rind and pulp of 147 muskmelons from international trade was assessed using cultural and biochemical methods, polymerase chain reaction and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry.
RESULTS
One hundred percent of the rind samples [3.69–8.92 log colony forming units (CFU) g−1] and 89.8% of the pulp samples (maximum load 3.66 log CFU g−1) were microbiologically contaminated. Among the 432 pulp isolates, opportunistic and potentially pathogenic bacteria were identified, mainly Staphylococcus spp. (48.9%), Clostridium spp. (42.9%) and Enterobacteriaceae (27.9%). Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli and isolates of the Bacillus cereus group were found on the rind (1.4%, 0.7% and 42.9%, respectively) and in the pulp (0.7%, 1.4% and 4.7%). Clostridium perfringens was isolated from the rind of seven melons.
CONCLUSION
The present study revealed a regularly occurring internal contamination of melons. Possible health risks for consumers because of an occurrence of microorganisms in melon pulp should be considered in future food safety assessments. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.}},

  abstract     = {{BACKGROUND
Bacterial contamination of platelet concentrates (PCs) is still a major challenge in transfusion medicine. Different methodologic concepts and screening strategies have been developed and investigated concerning their usability. We evaluated the feasibility of BacT/ALERT automated culture (BacT/A, bioMérieux) with late sampling after 3 days at the earliest.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS
Twenty-four bacterial strains isolated from PCs and six relevant strains from reference stocks were spiked into apheresis-derived PCs (10-60 colony-forming units [CFU]/bag). Sampling was performed after 3 days, and bacterial detection was investigated using the two detection methods (BacT/A and BactiFlow [BF], bioMérieux). The maximum time-to-result of BacT/A was set to less than 12 hours.
RESULTS
All medium- or high-pathogenic strains are capable of proliferating to high titers, and 100% of contaminated samples were detected by BF and BacT/A (6 to ≤12 h incubation); lower detection rates of BacT/A were obtained within 6 hours of incubation (≤6 h: 76.2-93.4%). The majority of low-pathogenic isolates are also capable of growing in PCs (89.7%), showing a detection rate of 74.3% for BF versus 54.3% for BacT/A (6 to ≤12 h incubation). BacT/A failed to detect bacteria within 6 hours of incubation. Certainly, a small number of strains did not grow under PC storage conditions and were detectable by BacT/A only with increased detection times.
CONCLUSIONS
Late sampling after 3 days at the earliest, combined with reduced BacT/A incubation following the negative-to-date concept, offer an alternative opportunity to extend the shelf life of PCs from 4 to 5 days in Germany. The sensitivity of BacT/A with late sampling is nearly comparable to BF; the time-to-result is considerably longer.
