  abstract = {{The Old City of Aleppo, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, has been inscribed on UNESCO{\textquoteright}s World Heritage List in 1986. In the early 1990s the Aleppo municipality initiated the project for the Rehabilitation of the Old City with the German Technical Cooperation Agency (GTZ) as a partner. As part of the process, a Development Plan was issued as a general framework including ten strategies for upgrading the historical urban fabric in line with the sustainable development. Despite implementation of these strategies, the physical fabric of the Old City has continued to deteriorate, and the demographic transition has continued to increase until the escalation of the Syrian Civil War in 2011. The paper analyses the development plan{\textquoteright}s strategies in the Old City of Aleppo, mainly those related to housing aspects. It evaluates the effectiveness of these strategies based on the concept of good urban governance that intersects with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aiming to overcome the administrative gaps to rebuild the Old City more sustainably after the Syrian Civil War.}},

Yet, the discourse around AI has long been by experts and for experts. In this paper, we argue for a participatory approach towards designing human-AI interactions. We outline how we used design methodology to organise an interdisciplinary workshop with a diverse group of students – a workbook sprint with 45 participants from four different programs and 13 countries – to develop speculative design futures in five focus areas. We then provide insights into our findings and share our lessons learned regarding our workshop topic – AI and Space – our process, and our research. We learned that involving non-experts in complex technical discourses – such as AI – through the structural rigour of design methodology is a viable approach. We then conclude by laying out how others might use our findings and initiate their own workbook sprint to explore complex technologies in a human-centred way.}},

  abstract = {{The use of augmented reality (AR) guidance is seen as an opportunity to address the growing complexity of industrial tasks. Previous research showed benefits of AR for different industrial tasks especially for novice users, while other research suggests that AR was not superior to other means for novices. However, there is not much work that looks at the relation between initial exposure of users to AR (that is, if users have never used AR before) and different types of tasks. In this paper, addressing the field of car maintenance and repair, we look into the question of how AR support impacts the performance in familiar and unfamiliar task if the AR user has never used AR before. By running an experiment under field conditions, we investigate whether the familiarity of a specific repair task has an impact on the performance under AR guidance compared to a traditional repair guideline. Our experiment reveals interesting insights. First, we show that familiarity and routine have an important impact on adherence to (all) repair guidelines, which should be regarded in future studies. Second, despite its novelty and the corresponding added time to deal with AR, we found that guidance via AR worked better for unfamiliar tasks. This shows the potential of AR for guidance of industrial tasks in practice, and it brings up design suggestions for the implementation of this guidance in practice.}},

B. Previous research work investigated how people can be supported with such systems. However, there has been little work on the question on how to generate and author sequential instructions for assitive systems. In this paper, we present a new concept and a prototypical implementation of an assitive system that can be taught by demonstrating an assembly process. By using a combination of RGB and depth cameras, we can generate an assembly instruction of Lego Duplo bricks based on the demonstration of a user. This generated manual can later on be used for assisting other users in the assembly process. By our prototype system, we show the technological feasibility of assistive systems that can learn from users.}},

One possibility could be the use of one-hand controllers. Here, we present an exploration of using a 3-D mouse as a controller for human-drone interaction. We ran a pre-study that investigated the users’ natural spatial mapping between controller and drone dimensions. Based on these results we developed our prototype that shows the feasibility of our concept. A series of flight tests were conducted and the mapping between controller and flight movements were iteratively improved. In this paper, we present our development process and the implementation of our prototype.}},

While existing studies have investigated various aspects of these systems, little research has been conducted regarding the way in which the user accesses the provided instructions. In this paper we analyze the eye movements of users during the repeated execution of an assembly task at a projection-based assistive system in order to gain insights into the utilization of the presented instructions. For this purpose, we analyzed eye tracking recordings from a user study with 15 participants to investigate the sequences in which the respective instructions are observed by the users. The results show a significantly lower number of nonlinear gaze sequences as well as a significantly higher number of steps without observing the instructions during the repeated use of the assistive system. In addition, there was a significantly lower task completion time during repeated use of the assistive system.}},

Even though the use of object detection algorithms is facilitated through frameworks and publications, a big issue is the creation of the necessary training data. To tackle this issue, this work shows the design and evaluation of a prototype, which allows users to create synthetic datasets for object detection in images. The prototype is evaluated using YOLOv3 as the underlying detector and shows that the generated datasets are equally good in quality as manually created data. This encourages a wide adoption of object detection algorithms in different areas, since image creation and labeling is often the most time consuming step.}},

Previous studies showed advantages of the systems in permanent-use scenarios, such as faster assembly times. In this paper, we investigate whether such systems are suitable for training purposes. Within an experiment, we observed the training with a projection-based AR system over multiple sessions and compared it with a personal training and a paper manual training. Our study shows that projection-based AR systems offer only small benefits in the training scenario. While a systematic mislearning of content is prevented through immediate feedback, our results show that the AR training does not reach the personal training in terms of speed and recall precision after 24 hours. Furthermore, we show that once an assembly task is properly trained, there are no differences in the long-term recall precision, regardless of the training method.}},

As brand representatives, service employees play a critical role in these recollections. Their behaviour might inform job seekers’ understanding of the employer brand, thereby affecting their application decision. The impact of the service employee’s behaviour might be even more impactful if this behaviour is branded, meaning that the employee’s appearance and manner are representative of the brand values. In this paper, we analyse whether and how branded service employee behaviour affects job seekers’ application intentions. We argue that branded service employee behaviour provides two opposing signals: it contributes to consistent evaluations of the brand, leading to more brand trustworthiness and enhancing job seekers’ application intentions. However, it may also be perceived as inauthentic, reducing job seekers’ application intentions. Findings from a scenario experiment provide evidence of both effects.}},

For a gentle dimensioning of a pasteurization plant the knowledge of the kinetic figures is important. Activation energy, reaction order and pre-exponential factor of the L-ascorbic acid degradation in a model solution, apple, orange and black currant juice were determined. Lines of equal effects, which indicate different time-temperature combinations for the degradation, could be derived and compared with the lethal effect on microorganisms. The activation energies were located in the area of 25 to 44 kJ/mol for all samples except of orange juice (74 kJ/mol) in the range of 40-90 ?C with a zeroth reaction order. Based on these values, the lines of equal effects showed a lesser degradation at higher temperatures and shorter holding times even in the typical setting range of pasteurization plants.}},

  abstract = {{Continuous mashing provides advantages compared to conventional batch-wise mashing in terms of space time yield. The majority of fermentable sugars are generated during the so-called “β-amylase rest” (62–64 ◦C). These low molecular sugars are fermented later in the brewing process by yeasts and therefore determine the beer attenuation degree. Biological malt variations complicate the application of a continuous system in industrial scale particularly concerning targeted quality parameters. The aim is the prediction of sugar formation from process parameters for a real time control system. Therefore, a semi-empirical model for sugar formation in a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) system was developed under incorporation of the residence time distri- bution (RTD). The here presented model, which focuses on the “β-amylase rest”, is able to predict fermentable sugar concentrations in the continuous “β-amylase rest” with sufficient accuracy, in contrast to models that only use the flow rate and the reactor volume to determine the reaction time. However, the precision and trueness depend on the quality of the empirical data acquired previously in laboratory experiments for the selected temperature and raw material quality.}},

  abstract = {{Near infrared spectroscopy in combination with a transflection probe was investigated as inline measurement in a continuous flash pasteurizer system with a sugar-water model solution. Robustness and reproducibility of fluctuations of recorded spectra as well as trueness of the chemometric analysis were compared under different process parameter settings. Variable parameters were the flow rate (from laminar flow at 30 L/h to turbulent flow at 90 L/h), temperature (20 to 100 degrees C) and the path length of the transflection probe (2 and 4 mm) while the pressure was kept constant at 2.5 bar. Temperature and path length were identified as the most affecting parameters, in case of homogenous test medium. In case of particle containing systems, the flow rate could have an impact as well. However, the application of a PLS model, which includes a broad temperature range, and the correction of prediction results by applying a polynomial regression function for prediction errors, was able to compensate these effects. Also, a path length of 2 mm leads to a higher accuracy. The applied strategy shows that by the identification of relevant process parameters and settings as well as the establishment of a compensation strategy, near infrared spectroscopy is a powerful process analytical tool for continuous flash pasteurization systems.}},

  abstract = {{This paper introduces CAAI, a novel cognitive architecture for artificial intelligence in cyber-physical production systems. The goal of the architecture is to reduce the implementation effort for the usage of artificial intelligence algorithms. The core of the CAAI is a cognitive module that processes the user's declarative goals, selects suitable models and algorithms, and creates a configuration for the execution of a processing pipeline on a big data platform. Constant observation and evaluation against performance criteria assess the performance of pipelines for many and different use cases. Based on these evaluations, the pipelines are automatically adapted if necessary. The modular design with well-defined interfaces enables the reusability and extensibility of pipeline components. A big data platform implements this modular design supported by technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and Kafka for virtualization and orchestration of the individual components and their communication. The implementation of the architecture is evaluated using a real-world use case. The prototypic implementation is accessible on GitHub and contains a demonstration.}},

  abstract     = {{Die Gleichstromfabrik

@misc{8439,
  abstract = {{The Paper presents the concept of an experimental plant, which is to be built within the framework of the research project DC-INDUSTRIE2. This system consists of a multitude of electrical drives, various uni- and bidirectional rectifiers, several decentralized energy suppliers and several energy storage units. All devices in this system are coupled via a common DC Grid. DC Grids allow a very simple bidirectional energy exchange between the connected devices. Therefore, braking energy in electric drives, for example, can be used without additional effort and the integration of decentralized energy supplier systems such as photovoltaic (PV) or combined heat and power plants (CHP) as well as energy storage systems is much easier than in AC Grids. The purpose of the experimental plant is to electrically emulate a typical production machine or process and to investigate the real occurring currents and energy flows in the DC Grid. A total of 11 drive sets are available for this purpose, each consisting of a test machine and a load machine. The modeling of the actual production machine is done in MATLAB/Simulink. Speed and torque curves are calculated here and transmitted to the drive inverters via fieldbus. Thus, not only real mechanical quantities are obtained at the shaft, but also the currents in the DC Grid correspond to those of a real plant. Therefore it can be investigated, for example, how a production machine converted from AC to DC power would behave without having to build it. Furthermore, the effects of storage connections and grid disturbances can be realistically investigated.}},
