Our work emphasizes human-centered control rooms in the context of production plants. Increased automation does not have to come with less human control. Therefore, we report on multimodal collaborative interaction techniques to augment industrial control rooms. In particular, we include mobile workers who use the control room while being in the production hall using tablets or specifically mixed reality glasses. Collaborative annotation dashboards support discussions and a shared understanding among analysts. Manufacturing-related data can be integrated into business analytics environments so that holistic analyses can be performed. Multimodal interaction techniques can support effective interaction with the control room based on the users’ preferences. Immersive experience through mixed reality-based three-dimensional visualizations and interaction possibilities support users in obtaining a clear understanding of the underlying data.}},

HUMAN'22 takes place on June 28th---the conference's workshop day.

After two years of pandemic-caused virtual workshops, HUMAN'22 is organized as a hybrid event, which is in line with the organization of the main conference. We see this as a chance to allow in-presence meetings while providing remote participants the opportunity to get in touch by low registration costs and a reduced carbon footprint. Today's digital media enables us to communicate over distance or even attend larger meetings online and the Corona pandemic has taught us to use these tools in our daily life. @phdthesis{9175,
abstract = {{Multiple impinging jets are widely used for their enhanced heat and mass transfer characteristics, especially for drying of material such as paper and textiles. Efficient transport characteristics between a drying medium and the material being dried as well as the jet impingement force acting on the force sensitive products (i.e. paper, fabrics) or force sensitive surfaces (i.e. painted, coated) are very critical in the industrial drying applications for the overall performance of the operation. Many variables and influencing factors and parameters need to be considered for the proper design of such multiple impinging jet systems. At present, a complete understanding of the effect of all the design and operating parameters is lacking. Designers should optimize the design parameters of industrial drying equipment to achieve the minimum capital costs (size of the apparatus) and running costs (energy consumption). In the framework of this thesis, the heat and mass transfer rates and pressure force between the multiple impinging round jets and moving surface are investigated numerically. Numerical simulations have been conducted to characterize the impinging jet heat and mass transfer and pressure force on a moving surface with an array of impinging round jets varying the following parameters: jet Reynolds number, nozzle-to-surface distance, jet-to-jet spacing, jet exit angle, relative surface curvature and relative surface velocity. Then, the key controlling design variables such as the nozzle-to-surface distance and the jet-to-jet spacing both normalized by the jet exit diameter (i.e., H/d and S/d), the jet exit velocity, the surface velocity and the jet exit angle have been considered for a design optimization. Correlations describing the average Nusselt number and pressure force coefficient for single row jet configurations impinging on the flat and curved surfaces have been developed. The present work illustrates that it is possible to address the effects of the complex flow phenomena as encountered in industrial drying process using generic CFD codes with good results. Thus complex and extensive computations based on elaborate and time consuming turbulence modelling (i.e. RSM or LES) may be avoided as well the expensive measurements of jet arrays impinging on moving surfaces. Using the correlation equations derived from the computations the dependencies for the main parameters over a wide range may be easily be determined. The analysis of the flow fields showed many different phenomena interacting, leading to different flow regimes. In order to assess these phenomena further investigations, preferably based on LES and DNS modelling and flow measurements are needed. abstract = {{The paper studies local community centres (Serbian: centar mesne zajednice – CMZ) of post–war mass housing neighbourhoods in New Belgrade. Those were designed and built in 1970s as multifunctional centres with facilities and programmes complementary to the housing blocks: socio–cultural, commercial (grocery stores), daily services (post office, bank, crafts, etc.) spaces for socio–political activities and office spaces for the local community. The local community centres significantly increased quality of life of the residents, liveability and socialisation in the neighbourhoods. Furthermore, one of the main aims of these spaces was to enable actual realisation of the self–management in local communities. This paper reflects on the ideological and theoretical basis for their conceptualisation, referring to Edvard Kardelj, one of the main ideologues of self–management and originator of the local community concept in Yugoslavia. Moreover, the paper investigates: how the local community centres were planned, designed and programmed, and how they were spatially integrated in the existing residential blocks; how their organisational and governing role has been neglected over time, and their main purpose altered; and what are potentials and socio–spatial capacities for their future reuse. Reaffirmation of local community centres as utilitarian, governing and social space is recognized as key for promoting participation and collaborative governance in New Belgrade blocks, as well as for improving social connections, solidarity and sense of belonging in these neighbourhoods. As such, the local community centres could be one of the main factors of revitalisation of the blocks, increasing vitality and improving quality of life of the residents. Furthermore, the local community centres could have a major role in unlocking the potential of institutions and individuals towards new effective urban governance structures, as well as institutionalising citizens{\textquoteright} participation and bottom-up governance as direct democracy in the city today.}},

Sebastian Wittland

abstract = {{Industrial heritage is among the products of modern urban development, and the influencing factors of its regeneration and development are often complex. Due to different national conditions, the research progress and approaches in industrial heritage reuse in China are different from other countries. While industrial heritage sites in Europe have become part of urban redevelopment in several regions, China still focuses mostly on single objects, lacking systematic analysis, especially at the urban scale. Regarding the city of Nanjing, an operational approach to complex urban dynamics is proposed based on a simplified analysis of official statistics, maps and GIS technology. The influence mechanisms of Nanjing’s urban planning on industrial heritage regeneration and development after 1990 are analyzed. The results show that urban growth boundaries, traffic accessibility, eco-environmental policies, population distribution, industrial renovation investment and natural resource change all have a significant impact on the abandonment and regeneration of Nanjing industrial heritage. This study expands the research perspective of industrial heritage reuse in China and proposes a clearer systematic planning strategy for the future of industrial heritage in cities.}},

Electrical connectors are a crucial component in an electrical on-board system. They are exposed to a wide variety of influences by the environment and operating conditions. Thus, the degradation of electrical connectors can occur. Material and surface analysis methods are the tools used to analyze the degradation mechanisms in connectors after lifetime tests, as well as in field operations. Within the framework of this study, a wide variety of methods from the analytical scope are presented and discussed. The connector surfaces degraded by different failure mechanisms are analyzed using various material and surface analysis methods. The quality and the nature of the analyses results obtained from various analysis methods are compared. abstract = {{Failure in time (FIT) is an important measure for the reliability of electrical connectors. Due to the very long lifetime of connectors, the tests for the determination of FIT rate are time and labour intensive. In this paper a data driven method using a statistical process to estimate the FIT rate of electrical connectors with data of electrical contact resistance development in short term tests is proposed. The results of prediction are then compared with the results from long term tests. The study shows a strong correlation between contact resistance development in short term tests and the development of the number of failures in later stages of tests. In order to predict the development of degradation precisely, the distribution of resistance data in many different tests with different connectors is investigated. The Generalized Extreme Value Distribution, which reveals an ideal fitting, has been implemented for the prediction of the failure rates of connectors, thereby enabling a remarkable time-lapse of lifetime tests. This method can also be employed in the prognosis and management of system health through the forecast of health of connectors in different systems in operation.}},

abstract = {{A new acceleration model for the reliability prediction of electrical connectors has recently been published. This model enables the evaluation of failure rates gained in highly accelerated life tests (HALT) and considers thermal and vibrational loading. However, since the initial study only covered a small set of test parameters, further study of the model is required. Previous studies have sufficiently investigated the influence of the vibration test mode on the failure rate of electrical connectors. Therefore, this study now focuses on the influence of the thermal cycling test. A commonly used automotive connector is chosen and subjected to stresses in HALT covering various upper temperatures, test durations and thermal cycling frequencies. Additionally, the principles of determining the coefficient of temperature difference and the coefficient of the thermal cycling frequency are presented, since these coefficients are connector specific and required for the acceleration model. Based on the numbers of failures in test, the influence of the various thermal cycling tests is discussed, and the coefficients are calculated for the chosen connector. In conclusion a guideline to select an appropriate upper temperature and test duration in order to compare the reliability of different electrical connectors is provided.}},

Silver is a promising plating material because of a good balance between performance and costs. The conventional silver plating is soft; therefore, a thick silver plating should be used to prevent the wear through during the operation. In order to enhance the wear resistance and prolong the lifetime of the silver plating, silver platings are modified by co-depositing nanoparticles with a core/shell structure into the silver matrix. A novel method to prepare the Ag (shell)@Al 2 O 3 (core) nanoparticles by galvanic process is introduced in this paper. The influence of fabrication parameters in the galvanic process such as the concentration of silver nitrate solution and the plating voltage on the silver content in the Ag@Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles is investigated. Afterwards, different concentrations of core/shell nanoparticles are co-deposited into the silver plating to study the effect of nanoparticles on the microhardness, microstructure and the lifetime of the silver plating. As a result, the microhardness and the lifetime of the silver plating are significantly improved and a favorable nanoparticle concentration exists for the longest lifetime. Moreover, the mechanism of the lifetime improvement is determined.}},

For this reason, electrical connectors are being developed for long-term use applications. However, a small amount of function failures are still being observed in long-term use field vehicles. In this study all electrical connectors of five long-term driven vehicles from various car manufacturers are disassembled and analyzed. The same analysis procedure is followed for every vehicle and the electrical resistance of the connectors is measured to determine electrical failures. The contacts of failed connectors are further analyzed using optical microscopy, XRF spectroscopy, EDS and detailed contact resistance mapping. By comparing the connectors with electrical failures to the same types of connectors with a proper electrical resistance, failure mechanisms can be detected and analyzed. The frequency of various failure mechanisms is statistically evaluated. The results of the analysis provide valuable indications with respect to improvement of the reliability of connectors.}},

abstract = {{In order to increase mobility in rural areas and to support public transport, an autonomous monorail vehicle (MonoCab [1]) is developed, which is able to use old unused railroad tracks. A narrow design makes it possible for two vehicles to pass each other on one track in two-way traffic. A fully automated driving mode allows the vehicle to be ordered on demand via app.
Due to the design on only two wheels, monorail vehicles must be able to react quickly to environmental influences, such as wind, in order to prevent overturning. To avoid critical tilt angles during travel and ensure ride comfort, gyroscopic stabilizers and linear masses are used to hold the vehicle in the desired position in real time.

In this study, the vehicle behavior is investigated by determining flow coefficients when crosswind occurs. For this purpose, a guideline from the German railroad standard DIN EN 14067-6 is applied. This standard specifies a flow around the vehicle in 5-degree increments from 0 degrees to 50 degrees, followed by 10-degree increments to 90 degrees, to simulate crosswinds from different directions. The flow vector is calculated from the vehicle speed and the wind speed, taking into account the wind angle. In order to better detect occurring instabilities at the vehicle geometry, the simulation series is calculated with the transient solver pimpleFoam. These simulations are used to generate characteristic curves using calculated moment coefficients.

In addition, the pressure surge is examined, which occurs when two vehicles pass each other in oncoming traffic. This is achieved using the dynamic mesh solver overPimpleDyMFoam for overlaid meshes. Two opposing vehicles with projected track gauge spacing are defined with a linear motion function of maximum vehicle speed magnitude. During the passing of both vehicles at maximum speed, the forces and moments around the point of contact on the rail are recorded.}},

As the artistic installations featured in this visual essay — The Ethics of Dust (2014–2016) and Watershed Moment (2020) — demonstrate, Jorge Otero-Pailos combines various elusive elements, such as water sounds and dust, to conceive meditative and contemplative spaces. His installations invite visitors to pause and reflect on the memories, both personal, social, and environmental, that define each of us; they probe deep into the past and deep into the future.

Since these are some of the issues we wanted to explore in this special issue, ‘Embodiment and Meaning-making: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Heritage Architecture’, we invited various artists and scholars to write a very short caption in reaction to the images provided by the author through one of these three ‘lenses’:

- affect, embodied experience, atmosphere;

- politics of heritage;

- processes of meaning-making.

The results reveal the power of images to provoke imagination through atmospheric and embodied experiences, and the power of experimental heritage work to convey (political) meaning across distance and different analogue or digital media.

Advanced planning and scheduling (APS) systems provide these capabilities and are an extension for ERP systems. However, when integrating an APS and ERP system, the ERP data frequently lacks quality, hindering the APS system from working as required. This paper introduces a data quality (DQ) assessment framework that employs a Bayesian Network (BN) to perform quick DQ assessments based on expert interviews and DQ measurements with actual ERP data. We explain the BN’s functionality, design, and validation and show how using the perceived DQ of experts and a semi-supervised learning algorithm improves the BN’s predictions over time. We discuss applying our framework in an APS system implementation project involving an APS system provider and a medium-sized manufacturer of hydraulic cylinders. Despite considering the DQ assessment framework in such a specific context, it is not restricted to a particular domain. We close by discussing the framework’s limits, particularly the BN as a DQ assessment methodology and future works to improve its performance.}},

  abstract     = {{Background:
Errors can have dangerous consequences, resulting in a preventive strategy in most company-based technical vocational education and training (TVET). On the contrary, errors provide a useful opportunity for learning due to mismatches of mental models and reality and especially to improve occupational safety and health (OSH).
Objective:
This article presents a didactic concept for developing a learning system based on learning from errors. Learners shall directly experience the consequences of erroneous actions through presenting error consequences in augmented reality to avoid negative, dangerous, or cost-intensive outcomes.
Methods:
Empirical data prove errors to be particularly effective in TVET. A formal description of a work system is systematically adopted to outline a connection between work, errors concerning OSH, and a didactic concept. A proof-of-concept systematically performs a use case for the developed learning system. It supports critical reflections from a technical, safety, and didactical perspective, naming implications and limitations.
Results:
By learning from errors, a work-based didactic concept supports OSH competencies relying on a learning system. The latter integrates digital twins of the work system to simulate and visualise dangerous error consequences for identified erroneous actions in a technical proof-of-concept. Results demonstrate the ability to detect action errors in work processes and simulations of error consequences in augmented reality.
Conclusion:
The technical learning system for OSH education extends existing learning approaches by showcasing virtual consequences. However, capabilities are limited regarding prepared learning scenarios with predefined critical errors. Future studies should assess learning effectiveness in an industrial scenario and investigate its usability.}},

abstract = {{Larger processing equipment to produce minced meat could affect its structure due to intensive processing and a high energy intake in the meat mass. To assess if this would result in alterations in the minced meat quality, finely chopped meat (FCM) was added in different concentrations (15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, and 100%) to minced meat and quality parameters were analyzed. FCM was used to simulate different intensity of an unintended destruction of meat cells due to various processes. The amount of non-intact cells (ANIC) was determined histologically and furthermore, soluble protein content, water holding capacity, mechanical and sensory texture, and scanning electron and confocal laser scanning microscopy was applied to analyze the meat structure and quality. ANIC indicated that even adding 15% FCM was statistically (p < 0.05) distinguishable from 100% minced meat and 30% FCM had already 50 Vol.-% ANIC. In contrast, the addition of 15% or 30% FCM did not result in significant differences in drip loss of raw and cooked meat as well as mechanical and sensory texture analysis. This study showed that intensive processing might be detectable via ANIC, but that the minced meat quality was not affected.}},

abstract = {{Pellet production is a multi-step manufacturing process comprising granulation, extrusion and spheronisation. The first step represents a critical control point, since the quality of the granule mass highly influences subsequent process steps and, consequently, the quality of final pellets. The most important parameter of wet granulation is the liquid requirement, which can often only be quantitatively evaluated after further process steps. To identify an alternative for optimal liquid requirements, experiments were conducted with a formulation based on lactose and microcrystalline cellulose. Granules were analyzed with a Powder Vertical Shear Rig. We identified the compression density (ρpress) as the said alternative, linking information from the powder material and the moisture content (R2 = 0.995). We used ρpress to successfully predict liquid requirements for unknown formulation compositions. By means of this prediction, pellets with high quality, regarding shape and size distribution, were produced by carrying out a multi-step manufacturing process. Furthermore, the applicability of ρpress as an alternative quality parameter to other placebo formulations and to formulations containing active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) was demonstrated.}},

abstract = {{In mechanical engineering, individual functional units of a machine are often assembled by one operator at single workstations or at one-piece flow lines. Based on the order information, the required parts are taken from flow racks and assembled step by step to build a functional unit. The existing assembly concepts have two decisive disadvantages in operational practice. First, a large number of components to be provided leads to long walking distances at the work station or line. Second, as the complexity of the assembly task increases, the informational portion of the work increases, so that paper-based information provision can lead to unnecessary assembly errors and additional times. For these reasons, a compacted assembly system has been developed in which, firstly, material is supplied via driven carousels and, secondly, the necessary information is provided to the operator via a cognitive assistance system. The article shows that this concept can reduce walking distances while avoiding assembly errors and additional times.}},

It assesses sensor sets for driverless and unattended train operation. It lists functionally justified ranges of technical specifications for sensors of different types, which will generate input for AI perception algorithms (i.e. for signal and obstacle detection). Since an optimal sensor set is the subject of research, this paper provides the specification of a generic data acquisition platform as a crucial step. Some particular results are recommendations for the minimal resolution and shutter type for image sensors, as well as beam steering methods and resolutions for LiDARs.}},

abstract = {{Development and optimization of biopharmaceutical production processes with cell cultures is cost- and time-consuming and often performed rather empirically. Efficient optimization of multiple objectives such as process time, viable cell density, number of operating steps & cultivation scales, required medium, amount of product as well as product quality depicts a promising approach. This contribution presents a workflow which couples uncertainty-based upstream simulation and Bayes optimization using Gaussian processes. Its application is demonstrated in a simulation case study for a relevant industrial task in process development, the design of a robust cell culture expansion process (seed train), meaning that despite uncertainties and variabilities concerning cell growth, low variations of viable cell density during the seed train are obtained. Compared to a non-optimized reference seed train, the optimized process showed much lower deviation rates regarding viable cell densities (<10% instead of 41.7%) using five or four shake flask scales and seed train duration could be reduced by 56 h from 576 h to 520 h. Overall, it is shown that applying Bayes optimization allows for optimization of a multi-objective optimization function with several optimizable input variables and under a considerable amount of constraints with a low computational effort. This approach provides the potential to be used in the form of a decision tool, e.g., for the choice of an optimal and robust seed train design or for further optimization tasks within process development.}},

In the field of energy supply, the use of DC technology is also growing and is state of the art in offshore, high-voltage, vehicle and data center applications. The spread of industrial open DC grids is currently starting and is completely different due to the requirements: The industrial DC grid is highly dynamic. This means that power varies greatly over time and therefore there is a large amount of capacitance with little damping. The paper describes possibilities of reduction and changing of DC link capacitors from devices and the resulting influences on the lifetime for both electrolytic and film capacitors.}},

abstract = {{The construction industry is one of the greatest sources of pollution, where 39% of global energy-related carbon emissions are attributed to buildings’ direct and indirect emissions (UNEP-SBCI 2017). Facades have a high influence on energy consumption during the building life cycle and, consequently, contribute to buildings' CO2 equivalent emissions (CO2e). This paper examines the influence of varying design parameters to enhance the environmental performance of stick curtain wall systems. The environmental performance is determined by measuring the curtain wall system's contribution to the building's operational energy consumption and assessing its global warming potential throughout its whole life cycle. The curtain wall contribution to building operational energy consumption in terms of heating and cooling demands (kWh/year) was calculated through an energetic analysis using EVEBI Pro software. A whole life cycle assessment (WLCA) from cradle to cradle was carried out to define the global warming potential (KgCO2e) using OneClick LCA software. The first design parameter is the glass type and thickness, including the existing 56mm TGU and three other variants, 44mm TGU, 27mm DGU, and 24mm DGU. The second design parameter is the profile material and system, including the existing profile VISS 60 steel and two variants, FWS 60 aluminium and AOC 60 timber. The results indicate that reducing the curtain wall glass thickness from 56mm to 44mm would reduce the embodied carbon emissions almost by half and slightly impact the operational energy consumption related to heating and cooling demands. Also, using 27mm DGU instead of 24mm DGU would significantly reduce the curtain wall’s WLCA. Regarding the other parameter, the comparison shows that the baseline VISS 60 steel profile system has the lowest global warming potential, followed by the AOC 60 timber and FWS 60 Alu systems.}},

The moisture content varies, reversely to the density, with the highest values of up to 600% at the trunk core, especially at the top of the palm trunk. Kiln drying material with such low density, very high moisture content and high sugar and starch content is difficult and often produces drying defects such as cell collapse, cracks, and mold. Mechanical dewatering of wet oil palm lumber in an unheated double roller press reduces the water content and generates sugar-containing pressed water (sap) that could be used as a source for biochemicals. The share of mechanically removed water varied from 1 to >54% of the total water removed from wet to dry state (at 20 °C, 65% rh). Center boards from the top of the trunk had the highest dewatering rates while boards from the periphery at the bottom of the trunk (high density, low water content) showed the lowest.}},

However, an isolated consideration of the technical system is not sufficient for the design. Rather, it is necessary to design the entire work system taking into account the socio-technical system approach. This enables the combination of the strengths of people and intelligent systems. This paper presents an approach for a socio-technical requirements elicitation in the design of AI-based systems by adapting the HTO-analysis. First, a mission statement is developed. Based on a detailed process modelling, existing data and systems are recorded. In addition, all relevant stakeholder groups are included by conducting interviews and surveys. Thus, the procedure enables the derivation of a comprehensive catalogue of requirements. The application of the approach is illustrated by using an example from industrial practice, the design of an intelligent workforce planning system.}},

abstract = {{Technologies such as TSN and OPC UA are enablers for converged networks in industrial applications. TSN enables the coexistence of network traffic with real-time requirements and best-effort requirements. On the other hand, OPC UA defines a common information model in addition to secure communication, scalability, and platform independence. The new specification of OPC UA PubSub enables the possibility of implementing OPC UA on the lower levels of the automation pyramid, the field level. Therefore, combining these two technologies can in principle be implemented for every vertical and horizontal communication. This document analyzes the state of the art of OPC UA over TSN and explains the first steps towards an easy to use proof-of-concept for a converged network that is also designed to be a testbed. The testbed will be used to evaluate the interoperability of TSN-capable devices from different vendors. In addition to that, different OPC UA PubSub implementations will be used and benchmarked. These future results will present an overview of the currently available products and provides hands-on experiences for practical implementations of converged networks.}},

abstract = {{The feasibility of inline classification and characterization of seven fruit juice varieties was investigated by the application of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) combined with chemometrics. The findings are intended to be used to optimize the flash pasteurization of liquid foods. More precise information of the kind of product in real time had to be achieved to enable a more product-specific process. Using the method of partial least squares discriminant analysis, the fruit juice varieties were classified, showing a classification rate of 100% regarding an internal and 69% regarding an external test sets. A characterization by the extract content, pH value, turbidity, and viscosity was made by fitting a partial least squares regression model. The percentage prediction error of the pH value was <3% for internal and external test sets, and for the Brix value prediction errors were about 4% (internal) and 20% (external). The parameters viscosity and turbidity were found to be unsuitable. Despite this, the strategy applied to gain more product-specific information in real time showed to be feasible. By linking the results to a database containing potentially harmful microorganisms for various types of fruit juices, a more product-specific calculation of the necessary heat input can be performed. To demonstrate the practical relevance, a comparison between conventional and product-adapted process control was performed using two fruit varieties as examples in case of Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris. Thus, with more accurate product information, achieved through the use of NIRS with chemometrics, a more precise calculation of the heat input can be achieved.}},

abstract = {{Securing factory communication to protect corporate data is an important concern in the context of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Various cryptographic protocols can be used to establish secure communication channels. One of these protocols is the Transport Layer Security 1.3 (TLS 1.3) protocol. A key component of the TLS handshake protocol is the Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange (ECDHKE), a public key cryptosystem used to exchange keys over insecure channels which can be based on a number of standardized elliptic curves. A special form of elliptic curves are Montgomery curves which are advantageous compared to more traditional Weierstrass curves due to their fast arithmetic. This is especially important when the ECDHKE is performed on embedded devices and in time-critical situations. In this work, the performance of ECDHKE implementations using standardized Montgomery curves Curve25519 and Curve448 included in the wolfSSL library are evaluated on an embedded 32-bit STM32L476RG Nucleo development board designed by STMicroelectronics. The benchmark results show that using Curve25519 with around 220ms for the key pair generation and the key agreement respectively is approximately 75% faster than using Curve448 with around 900ms for each of the algorithms, which can be attributed to their differing security levels. These results suggest that the algorithms might not be fast enough for time critical situations.}},

abstract = {{This Design-Based Research (DBR) project aims to develop an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) for higher education. The system will collect teaching and learning materials in audio and video formats (e.g., podcasts, lecture recordings, screencasts, and explainer videos), and store them on a learning experience platform (LXP). Then, the ITS will process them with the help of speech recognition to gain data which, in turn, will be used to power further applications: Using artificial intelligence (AI), the platform will allow users to search the materials, automatically compiling them according to criteria like lesson subject, language, medium, or required prior knowledge. By the end of the last DBR cycle, the ITS will also provide a more active form of support: It will automatically generate exercises based on predefined patterns and teaching materials, thus allowing learners to check up on their learning progress autonomously. In order to closely match the ITS's features to the needs and learning habits of students in higher education, the development of this AI-based tutoring system is accompanied by an interdisciplinary team which will continuously re-evaluate and adapt the concept over the course of several DBR cycles. Our goal is to derive implications for the system's technical development by collecting and evaluating educational research data (mixed methods design; primary and secondary research methods).}},

Principally, the predefined geometrical dimensionality is enforced locally on the components of the optimized structures. These constraints are defined using the principal values (singular values) from a singular value decomposition of points clouds represented by elemental centroids and the corresponding relative density design variables. The proposed approach is numerically implemented for demonstrating the designing of lattice or membrane-like structures. This paper presents a novel algorithmic and symbolic construction for covariance functions of Gaussian Processes (GPs) with realizations strictly following a system of linear homogeneous ODEs with constant coefficients, which we call LODE-GPs. Introducing this strong inductive bias into a GP improves modelling of such data. Using smith normal form algorithms, a symbolic technique, we overcome two current restrictions in the state of the art: (1) the need for certain uniqueness conditions in the set of solutions, typically assumed in classical ODE solvers and their probabilistic counterparts, and (2) the restriction to controllable systems, typically assumed when encoding differential equations in covariance functions. We show the effectiveness of LODE-GPs in a number of experiments, for example learning physically interpretable parameters by maximizing the likelihood.}},

Developers of assistance systems are therefore faced with the challenge of designing various dimensions of adaptivity in such a way that they are conducive to acceptance and support. In this paper, we consider the different dimensions and options for the adaptation of assembly assistance and present the results of a first survey to investigate users' expectations regarding the adaptability of assembly assistance systems. Our evaluation shows that users have clear preferences concerning the control over adaptation and adaptation goals, while other aspects of adaptation assistance do not indicate a clear tendency. abstract = {{Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are developed to reduce fuel consumption and the emission of carbon dioxide. Common powertrain configurations of PHEVs (i.e., the configuration of the combustion engine, electric motor, and transmission) can be operated either in series, parallel, or power split hybrid mode, whereas powertrain configurations with multimode transmissions enable switching between those modes during vehicle operation. Hence, depending on the current operation state of the vehicle, the most appropriate mode in terms efficiency can be selected. This, however, requires an operating strategy, which controls the mode selection as well as the torque distribution between the combustion engine and electric motor with the aim of optimal battery depletion and minimal fuel consumption. A well-known approach is the equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS). It can be applied by using optimizations based on a prediction of the future driving behavior. Since the outcome of the ECMS depends on the quality of this prediction, it is crucial to know how accurate the predictions must be in order to obtain acceptable results. In this contribution, various prediction methods and real-time capable ECMS implementations are analyzed and compared in terms of the achievable fuel economy. The basis for the analysis is a holistic model of a state-of-the-art PHEV powertrain configuration, comprising the multimode transmission, corresponding powertrain components, and representative real-world driving data.}},

Reinforcement learning (RL) for traffic signal control is a promising approach to design better control policies and has attracted considerable research interest in recent years. However, most work done in this area used simplified simulation environments of traffic scenarios to train RL-based TSC. To deploy RL in real-world traffic systems, the gap between simplified simulation environments and real-world applications has to be closed. Therefore, we propose LemgoRL, a benchmark tool to train RL agents as TSC in a realistic simulation environment of Lemgo, a medium-sized town in Germany. In addition to the realistic simulation model, LemgoRL encompasses a traffic signal logic unit that ensures compliance with all regulatory and safety requirements. LemgoRL offers the same interface as the well-known OpenAI gym toolkit to enable easy deployment in existing research work. To demonstrate the functionality and applicability of LemgoRL, we train a state-of-the-art Deep RL algorithm on a CPU cluster utilizing a framework for distributed and parallel RL and compare its performance with other methods. Our benchmark tool drives the development of RL algorithms towards real-world applications.}},

abstract = {{Agriculture is a major contributor to nitrate groundwater contamination. Hence, farmers are demanded to reduce the environmental impact but simultaneously must provide sufficient food products. One important building block for this "sustainable intensification" are appropriate cropping strategies. The potential of modified crop rotations was evaluated in a high-yielding environment in Northern Germany. Therefore, in five consecutive growing seasons (2016/2017 - 2020/2021) three crop rotations were grown in a field trial and compared with respect to agronomic (cereal unit), economic (gross margin) and environmental (N surplus) parameters. A standard crop rotation, typical for the region of the study, was compared with rearranged and augmented crop rotations. Therefore, crops with a high autumnal N uptake (winter oilseed rape and catch crops) were grown after crops with typically high soil mineral N (SMN) amounts after harvest (faba bean and winter oilseed rape). Due to the change of preceding and subsequent crops, an increased N transfer was supposed to prevent N from leaching and a lower N fertilizer demand of the subsequent crop was expected. On average, the modified crop rotations achieved significantly higher cereal units (9.3 and 10.8 t center dot ha -1) compared to the local crop rotation (8.5 t center dot ha -1). The gross margin of the local crop rotation was 1474 euro center dot ha- 1 and the other crop rotations maintained (1443 euro center dot ha -1) or significantly increased (1572 euro center dot ha -1) this value, respectively. The local crop rotation had a N surplus of 47 kg N center dot ha -1. In contrast, the N surplus of the modified crop rotations was significantly lower (10 and 28 kg N center dot ha -1). In summary, the results showed that a thoughtful rearrangement of crop rotations is an appropriate measure to simultaneously improve yields and gross margins with less unfavorable environmental impacts.}},

Soil and climate conditions are highly favourable for potato growth in this region. Production is under driving forces of (i) the potato processing industry, particularly in Belgium; (ii) the innovation for fresh potato in the UK, France and Germany; (iii) the leadership of Germany and the Netherlands for starch potato; and (iv) the dominance of the Netherlands for seed production. Based on an industrial agri-food production system, the region has the highest potato yield levels worldwide and developed relevant trade networks for export of seed, fresh and processed potato products in and outside Europe. Conventional and intensive potato production is widespread over the region, whilst organic production started to develop in Germany and France. Whether the coming decades will be as successful as the last ones for sustainable potato production will depend on how the sector and stakeholders of the whole potato value-chain will overcome new issues and challenges. These are mainly soil quality and health conservation, consequences of climate change, increasing bans on the use of plant protection products, tightening environmental standards, food waste reduction and increasing trade tensions hampering the flow of potatoes around the world. After a detailed description of the potato production in the region, this paper contains a SWOT analysis aiming to identify potential solutions to overcome environmental, technical, economic, political and societal issues in the region for sustainable potato production in the coming years and decades.}},

The possible transmission of Bbsl from companion animals to humans via ticks makes this disease important in terms of One Health approaches. Thus, early and accurate diagnosis and treatment are of utmost importance. Today’s standard for the detection of specific antibodies against Bbsl is a two-tiered test system based on an ELISA for screening combined with a line immunoassay (LIA) for confirmation. In this study, 200 canine and 200 equine serum samples with known antibody status were tested with two different LIAs (A and B). Results were compared regarding sensitivity, specificity, the diagnostic outcome for dogs and horses, as well as operability of the test. The results for canine serum samples corresponded to 94.0%, making both LIAs a good choice for LB diagnostic in dogs. For equine serum samples, the agreement of both tests was 65.5%, displaying the challenge equine samples still provide in LB diagnostic. Major concerns were the interpretation of the OspA antigen (AG) signal and the use of unspecific (i.e., p100/p83) or too sensitive signals on the LIA. The operability of both LIAs was equally user-friendly. Regarding the tests’ evaluation, the scanning process provided by LIA A was a major advantage considering the comparability of the tests.}},

abstract = {{Stachybotrys chartarum is a toxigenic fungus that is frequently isolated from damp building materials or improperly stored forage. Macrocyclic trichothecenes and in particular satratoxins are the most potent mycotoxins known to be produced by this fungus. Exposure of humans or animals to these secondary metabolites can be associated with severe health problems. To assess the pathogenic potential of S. chartarum isolates, it is essential to cultivate them under conditions that reliably promote toxin production. Potato dextrose agar (PDA) was reported to be the optimal nutrition medium for satratoxin production. In this study, the growth of S. chartarum genotype S strains on PDA from two manufacturers led to divergent results, namely, well-grown and sporulating cultures with high satratoxin concentrations (20.8 ± 0.4 µg/cm2) versus cultures with sparse sporulation and low satratoxin production (0.3 ± 0.1 µg/cm2). This finding is important for any attempt to identify toxigenic S. chartarum isolates. Further experiments performed with the two media provided strong evidence for a link between satratoxin production and sporulation. A comparison of three-point and one-point cultures grown on the two types of PDA, furthermore, demonstrated an inter-colony communication that influences both sporulation and mycotoxin production of S. chartarum genotype S strains.}},

abstract = {{Ostrich meat is characterized by high nutritional value; however, it remains an exotic product in most countries worldwide. In Europe, only few data are available regarding its microbial contamination, prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, and safety. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the microbiological quality and safety of ostrich meat samples (n = 55), each from one animal, produced in Bavaria, Germany. The provided microbiological status of ostrich meat included mesophilic aerobic bacteria, Enterobacteria, and mesophilic yeast and molds. In terms of food safety, all meat samples were negative for Salmonella spp. and Trichinella spp. Additionally, meat samples and a further 30 stool samples from 30 individuals were investigated for Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli genes, with two meat samples that were qPCR-positive. Antimicrobial-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, Enterococcus faecalis, and Enterococcus faecium strains were from meat and stool samples also analyzed; 13 potentially resistant Enterobacteriaceae (meat samples) and 4 Enterococcus faecium (stool samples) were isolated, and their susceptibility against 29 and 14 antimicrobials, respectively, was characterized. The results of this study provide an overview of microbial loads and food safety aspects that may be used as baseline data for the ostrich meat industry to improve their hygienic quality. However, the implementation of monitoring programs is recommended, and microbiological standards for ostrich meat production should be established.}},

abstract = {{Stachybotrys chartarum is frequently isolated from damp building materials or improperly stored animal forage. Human and animal exposure to the secondary metabolites of this mold is linked to severe health effects. The mutually exclusive production of either satratoxins or atranones defines the chemotypes A and S. Based upon the genes (satratoxin cluster, SC1-3, sat or atranone cluster, AC1, atr) that are supposed to be essential for satratoxin and atranone production, S. chartarum can furthermore be divided into three genotypes: the S-type possessing all sat- but no atr-genes, the A-type lacking the sat- but harboring all atr-genes, and the H-type having only certain sat- and all atr-genes. We analyzed the above-mentioned gene clusters and their flanking regions to shed light on the evolutionary relationship. Furthermore, we performed a deep re-sequencing and LC-MS/MS (Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry) analysis. We propose a first model for the evolution of the S. chartarum genotypes. We assume that genotype H represents the most ancient form. A loss of the AC1 and the concomitant acquisition of the SC2 led to the emergence of the genotype S. According to our model, the genotype H also developed towards genotype A, a process that was accompanied by a loss of SC1 and SC3.}},

abstract = {{Diet processing impacts on starch properties, such as the degree of starch gelatinization. This affects digestibility, as shown in laboratory mice fed either a pelleted or an extruded diet. In the present study, the morphology of starch particles throughout the digestive tract of mice was visualized. Thirty-two female C57BL/6J mice were used for a feeding trial. They were fed a commercial maintenance diet for laboratory mice, which was available in pelleted and extruded form, for seven weeks. The mice were sacrificed after the feeding period, and chyme samples were collected from five sites (stomach, anterior and posterior small intestine, caecum, colon). Samples of diets, chyme and faeces were analyzed via stereomicroscopy (stained with Lugol’s iodine) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The starch granules appeared more compact in the pelleted diet, showing first signs of degradation only in the small intestine. The caecum content of both diets group was intensively stained, particles as well as fluid phase, indicating that it contained mainly starch. The SEM pictures of caecum content showed abundant bacteria near starch particles. This suggests selective retention of prae-caecally undigested starch in the murine caecum, likely the site of microbial fermentation.}},
