abstract = {{The COST-Action (CA 18137) on Middle Class Mass Housing in Europe (MCMH-EU) has established a transnational scientific network to document the productions of middle-class mass housing built in Europe since the 1950s in order to investigate this specific topic and share knowledge. Considering that middle-class mass housing dominates most of our cities, the research translates into the study of the extensive development of cities in Europe after World War II. The breadth of the theme and the differences between the countries make it difficult to construct a systematic and unified criticism of middle-class mass housing, albeit concentrating on the post-war period. The COST-Action has the goal to build a network to gather research representing the pooled knowledge and experiences from the network of multidisciplinary researchers. So, transversally throughout the Working Groups, an inventory of case studies, a collection of articles, and studies on the policies were produced. This paper elaborates on the collected and produced material and data in order to trigger comparisons and reflections on the approaches and methodologies to face the complexity of middle-class mass housing topic. The comparison was built by using different methods intersecting multiple points of view and following specific thematic tracks that seek to deconstruct the complexity of the middle-class mass housing topic into singular aspects. This paper presents the results of data analyses, visualisation techniques and comparative studies to identify massification processes, morphological structures, demographic and policy developments. It shows a combination of several methods to build a cross-sectional and systematic approach to the diverse knowledge envisioned to develop a methodology for future research. This can be especially useful for future developments and insights towards joint or individual European guidelines, laws and policies to improve the dilapidated housing stock, current housing situation and to compete the housing crisis in general.}},

abstract = {{Introduction: Non-communicable diseases are the global disease burden of our time, with physical inactivity identified as one major risk factor. Green spaces are associated with increased physical activity of nearby residents. But there are still gaps in understanding which proximity and what characteristics of green spaces can trigger physical activity. This study aims to unveil these differences with a rigorous sensitivity analysis. Methods: We gathered data on self-reported health and physical activity from 1365 participants in selected neighbourhoods in Porto, Nantes, Sofia, and Hoje-Taastrup. Spatial data were retrieved from OpenStreetMap. We followed the PRIGSHARE guidelines to control for bias. Around the residential addresses, we generated seven different green space indicators for 15 distances (100-1500 m) using the AID-PRIGSHARE tool. We then analysed each of these 105 green space indicators together with physical activity and health in 105 adjusted structural equation models. Results: Green space accessibility and green space uses indicators showed a pattern of significant positive associations to physical activity and indirect to health at distances of 1100 m or less, with a peak at 600 m for most indicators. Greenness in close proximity (100 m) had significant positive effects on physical activity and indirect effects on health. Surrounding greenness showed positive direct effects on health at 500-1100 m and so do green corridors in 800 m network distance. In contrast, a high quantity of green space uses, and surrounding greenness measured in a larger radius (1100-1500 m) showed a negative relationship with physical activity and indirect health effects. Conclusions: Our results provide insight into how green space characteristics can influence health at different scales, with important implications for urban planners on how to integrate accessible green spaces into urban structures and public health decision-makers on the ability of green spaces to combat physical inactivity.}},

One of the techniques used to achieve a seamless outer appearance is the shadow box system, which is composed of two layers of glazing with an air cavity in between. It has gained widespread popularity in markets worldwide due to its potential for creative design and flexibility. However, it is prone to issues such as condensation, contamination, and overheating. This research utilized a mockup test approach to study the issue of overheating in shadow box systems and analyze the main causes of this problem. The findings have significant implications for the design of shadow box systems. The results of the mockup test indicate sun altitude in relation to the geolocation and facade orientation plays a major role in overheating the shadow box. Additionally, careful consideration should be given to the design of ventilation openings to mitigate the overheating issue. This ongoing analysis aims to develop strategies to mitigate the issues found in shadow box systems and future research will involve a comprehensive analysis of various types of shadow box systems.}},

abstract = {{Wet granulation is a frequent process in the pharmaceutical industry. As a starting point for numerous dosage forms, the quality of the granulation not only affects subsequent production steps but also impacts the quality of the final product. It is thus crucial and economical to monitor this operation thoroughly. Here, we report on identifying different phases of a granulation process using a machine learning approach. The phases reflect the water content which, in turn, influences the processability and quality of the granule mass. We used two kinds of microphones and an acceleration sensor to capture acoustic emissions and vibrations. We trained convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to classify the different phases using transformed sound recordings as the input. We achieved a classification accuracy of up to 90% using vibrational data and an accuracy of up to 97% using the audible microphone data. Our results indicate the suitability of using audible sound and machine learning to monitor pharmaceutical processes. Moreover, since recording acoustic emissions is contactless, it readily complies with legal regulations and presents Good Manufacturing Practices.}},

abstract = {{In the food industry, and especially in wines as products thereof, ethanol and sulfur dioxide play an equally important role. Both substances are important wine quality characteristics as they influence the taste and odor. As both substances comprise volatile matter, electronic noses should be applicable to discriminate the different qualities of wines. Our study investigates the influence of alcohol and sulfur dioxide on the discrimination ability of wines (especially those of the same grape variety) using two different electronic nose systems. One system is equipped with metal oxide sensors and the other with quartz crystal microbalance sensors. Contrary to indications in literature, where the alcohol content is discussed to have a large influence on e-nose results, it was shown that a difference of 1 % ethanol was not sufficient to allow accurate discrimination using Linear Discriminant Analysis by any system. On the positive side, the analyzed concentrations of ethanol (about 12 %) did not superimpose other volatile information. So difference in sulfur dioxide content gave an accuracy for sample discrimination of up to 90.6 % with MOS nose. Thus, we are so far partially able to discriminate wines with electronic noses based on their volatile imprint.}},

abstract = {{Wound infections are a major problem worldwide, both for the healthcare system and for patients affected. Currently available diagnostic methods to determine the responsible germs are time-consuming and costly. Wound infections are mostly caused by various bacteria, which in turn produce volatile organic compounds. From clinical experience, we know that depending on the bacteria involved, a specific odor impression can be expected. For this reason, we hypothesized that electronic noses, i.e., non-invasive electronic sensors for the detection of volatile organic compounds, are applicable for diagnostic purposes. By providing a comprehensive overview of the state-of-research, we tested our hypothesis. In particular, we addressed three overarching questions: 1) which sensor technologies are suitable for the diagnosis of wound infections and why? 2) how must the (biological) sample be prepared and presented to the measurement system? 3) which machine learning methods and algorithms have already proven successful for the classification of microorganisms? The corresponding articles have critically been reviewed and are discussed particularly in the context of their potential for clinical diagnostics. In summary, it can already be stated today that the use of electronic noses for the detection of bacteria in wound infections is a very interesting, fast and non-invasive method. However, reliable clinical studies are still missing and further research is necessary.}},

abstract = {{The wood from oil palm trunks exhibits significant variations in distribution of structural tissue, density and elastomechanical properties across and along the trunk. Its reliable, safe, and economic usage for load-bearing purposes, such as glued laminated timber (GLT), requires a precise definition of its elastomechanical properties through appropriate strength grading procedures. Oil palm lumber is strength graded according to its density using an X-ray technique in which 50 % of the lamellas are ripped, graded, edge glued and therefore density homogenized, and 50 % are cut only according to their geometry. Lamellas are tested in tension parallel to the vascular bundles; combined GLT is produced from strength-graded lamellas and tested in bending parallel and compression parallel and perpendicular to the vascular bundles. The characteristic strength values for C10 and C14 according to EN 338 are achieved. A correlation between density and elastomechanical properties is estab-lished. GLT from density-homogenized lamellas achieve higher bending properties than from lamellas with a “natural” density gradient across the width.}},

This research aimed to study how the acoustic environment of a university campus is perceived by people. The procedures for soundscape data collection and analysis were based on the ISO 12913 series. 30 volunteers divided into four groups participated in a “soundwalk” at the campus of the architecture school in Detmold, Germany, filling out questionnaires while sound
measurements and recordings were being taken. After the soundwalk, the data from the questionnaires, sound measurements, recordings, pictures and videos were analyzed. The findings suggest that people’s perception of sound is susceptible to the context, as participants seemed to shift their preference according to the ongoing
activities that drew attention, such as a construction site, sounds from children playing, music and groups of people. The results provide new evidence and insights about the acoustic environment and the soundscape of the university campus and can inform stakeholders to improve environmental quality.}},

abstract = {{The construction of climate-friendly new buildings is not enough to enable greenhouse gas neutrality by the second half of this century. To achieve it, the existing building stock needs to be renovated or retrofitted step by step. This study investigates the impact of a low-investment greenhouse gas emission reduction measure based on intelligent room heat management (IRHM) which is being tested to date on the main administrative building of district Lippe, built in 1979-80, in Germany. This system intends to reduce the energy consumption of further districts’ buildings that, due to the high costs, cannot be intensively renovated in the medium term. IRHM consist in the installation of an intelligent controller that, based on dynamic usage profiles, optimise the operation of the existing heating system. Through presence sensors in the office rooms, the employee’s worktime routine is continually registered to enable the creation of heating patterns that maximize heat comfort during worktime while energy is saved by reducing room temperature when the office is unoccupied. The analysis is based on collected data of heat energy consumption, room climate and user behaviour in five corridors: three with IRHM and two control corridors without it. In both control corridors and two of the IRHM corridors the façade was completely refurbished in 2021 while the remaining one still preserves the original façade to date. Heating demand calculations were conducted to enable a wider exploration of usage scenarios. The results obtained so far, show significantly lower heat consumption in the corridors with IRHM, reaching a maximum of 90% energy consumption reduction compared to the control corridors. An optimized operation of the radiators is clearly recognizable as the system anticipates the employee’s presence and reach the comfort room temperature (set-up temperature) before the beginning of the working time, keeping it while the room in use. It also reacts properly switching down to set-back temperature so far, no presence is detected. According to the heating demand calculations, the implementation of a set-back temperature out of worktime can reduce the energy consumption up to a 48%. Combined with the refurbishment of the façade, the heating demand sinks up to an 87%. Field data shows an even more optimistic perspective, as energy consumption was in average even lower than the calculated demand. The on-site implementation of the IRHM is accompanied by social science research aiming at getting feedback on thermal comfort as well as on employees’ experience with the handling of the intelligent room heat management device. Up to now three online surveys were conducted during heat periods between 2021 and 2023 with 18 to 21 participants from two-person offices. First analyses show that occupants’ satisfaction with temperature changed from a neutral ranking to a slightly positive voting. Room temperature was found to be comfortable as soon as entering the office in the morning. Preferred room temperature shifted over the survey time points from 21°C- 22°C to under 21°C. Further analyses will focus on general energy-relevant attitudes and habits such as windows-door opening.}},

This puts it in contrast to previous generations of programming languages. The advantages of low-code development are manifold, including the increase of software development capacities through a partial decentralization of the development process, speeding up software development through the low-code approach, and designing software with a strong user-centric focus. Using a low-code development platform can help companies adapt their own business processes to changing requirements more quickly and to make complexity resulting, for example, from heterogeneous customer wishes, manageable. Since many low-code development platforms are available, it is not easy for companies to select and successfully introduce a platform that meets their requirements. For this reason, this article presents a procedure model that assists in the process of selecting and implementing a platform.}},

abstract = {{Abstract In this contribution, a method for goal-oriented reanalysis is presented. The process allows predicting the change in a quantity of interest due to structural modifications (design changes), for example, the shape, the topology, material properties, and so forth. The approach is based on a goal-oriented method using primal and dual problems. Furthermore, the procedure is easy to implement in existing finite element programs because no derivatives with respect to the design variables are necessary. The proposed method can be used in classical applications with successive design steps, such as structural optimization, reliability, or structural damage analysis. The repeated structural analysis and calculating quantities of interest involve significant computational effort. Goal-oriented reanalysis methods can reduce the overall computational cost in the numerical simulation.}},

abstract = {{The process of thermal preservation of liquid foods is a safety-relevant process step in the processing of products such as fruit juices and is associated with a high-energy expenditure and safety margin. There are already various approaches to improve this conventionally managed process step in terms of product and resource preservation. Compared to these novel technologies, the use of real-time process analytics offers great potential to improve already existing process plants by implementing inline capable process analytical tools. This allows direct control of the reactions taking place and changes during the running process. Instead of post process, random product control, quality control during the process can be made rendered. The chemical and pharmaceutical industry serves as a reference industry for the use of process analytical tools, although the reactions and product matrices are less complex. In the food industry, on the other hand, there is a greater variation in raw materials and intermediate products. In addition, a large number of reactions can take place in parallel within a process, and the physical states and properties of the individual components can vary. A uniform set of rules for the use of process analytical tools does not exist here. Each product, each process provides its own research potential, so that a large research gap opens up in the area of the food industry.
In order to contribute to closing this gap, this thesis presents a novel approach to improve the process of pasteurization of liquid food. For fruit juices as an application, near infrared spectroscopy in combination with chemometric methods was applied to make the process more product specific. Based on known weaknesses of the process, the relevant aspects for a product-specific treatment were identified. In the further course, the suitability of near infrared spectroscopy as a process analytical tool in the process of pasteurization was verified. Moreover, it was investigated whether a sufficiently accurate identification of the product type as well as the microbiologically relevant properties can be achieved by the application of chemometric methods. In the course of this, the suitability of the measurement methodology was confirmed and solutions were established for any process influences. The product classification and description of the microbiologically relevant parameters extract content and pH value were also implemented with sufficient accuracy. Knowing the destruction kinetics of relevant microorganisms, the product-specific determination of target values for the necessary lethal heat input could be realized. In addition, an analysis of the actual values was carried out on the basis of a chemometric regression method by inferring the microbiological pasteurization effect through the chemical reaction of acid hydrolytic sucrose degradation by means of the indirect approach. This required knowledge of the chemical reaction kinetics and mahematical modeling of the degradation behavior. The novel approach could be confirmed by calculations using results from off-line analysis, whereas the use of near infrared spectroscopy as an inline method still revealed potential for optimization with respect to measurement accuracies.
In summary, the results of this work provide a promising opportunity to make conventional processes for the preservation of liquid foods more product-specific by using near-infrared spectroscopy as an inline-capable and multimodal sensor technique, leading to an increase in process efficiency and product quality.}},

abstract = {{This master thesis, Forte das Velas, investigates the architectural potential of revitalizing a historic coastal fortress through a contemporary program that balances preservation, public accessibility, and spatial reinterpretation. Situated within a sensitive maritime landscape, the project explores how heritage structures can be transformed into culturally active spaces without compromising their historical identity.
The design approach is based on minimal and reversible interventions that respect the existing masonry, proportions, and defensive morphology of the fort. New architectural elements are introduced as clearly legible additions, creating a dialogue between past and present rather than imitation. Programmatically, the proposal combines cultural, educational, and public functions, allowing the fortress to operate as an open civic landmark rather than a closed monument.
Spatial strategies emphasize views, thresholds, and sequences between interior and exterior, reinforcing the relationship between architecture, horizon, and terrain. Material choices and construction methods are guided by durability, adaptability, and low environmental impact, positioning the project within a broader discourse on sustainable heritage reuse.
Forte das Velas ultimately demonstrates how historical military architecture can be reimagined as an inclusive and future-oriented public infrastructure, merging cultural continuity with contemporary spatial needs.}},

"Trait"-like activity in patients with EDs is assessed by existing questionnaires, but there are few clinically validated assessments of a "state" urge to be physically active. Here, we developed and validated the State Urge to be Physically Active-Questionnaire (SUPA-Q). MethodsAfter developing and piloting the items, N = 126 patients with EDs (mostly anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa) took part in our mixed-longitudinal validation study with one primary assessment for all patients and a secondary assessment for a subsample of patients. Cronbach's & alpha; and split-half-methods served as measures of consistency and reliability. Correlations with other questionnaires were used to determine convergent and divergent validity, and confirmatory factor analysis was used for investigating factorial validity. We used paired-samples t-tests for repeated assessments to investigate change sensitivity. ResultsWe found the SUPA-Q to be highly consistent, and reliable and to demonstrate convergent, divergent, and factorial validity. The comparison of SUPA-Q scores from repeated assessments within a subsample of patients demonstrated the questionnaire's change sensitivity, Cohen's d = 0.48. Moreover, an increase in SUPA-Q scores was associated with a less positive mood, more anxiety, more body dissatisfaction, more tenseness, less feelings of control, and more stress. DiscussionThe newly developed SUPA-Q may help to accentuate the necessity to evaluate and address the acute urge to engage in physical activity in patients with EDs in clinical practice and ultimately support tailoring treatments to patients' unique symptom patterns. At the same time, differences between men and women with EDs remain poorly explored. MethodsIn this study, we compared 104 men to 104 diagnosis-matched women with EDs regarding sociodemographic and clinical features. Using latent class mixture modelling, we identified four distinct patient subgroups based on their sociodemographic features. ResultsMen with EDs had significantly higher odds than women to belong to a "single-childfree-working" class. Moreover, while there were few overall differences in ED-related symptoms and general psychopathology between men and women, single-childfree-working men with EDs presented with higher general psychopathology symptoms than men in the other classes. DiscussionWe discuss how considering sex and gender along with further sociodemographic differences in EDs may help to improve ED diagnosis and treatment.}},

  abstract     = {{Background
Previous investigations on the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q) factor structures in men have been restricted to non-clinical settings, limiting conclusions about the factorial validity in men with eating disorders (ED). This study aimed to examine the factor structure of the German EDE-Q in a clinical group of adult men with diagnosed ED.
Methods
ED symptoms were assessed using the validated German version of the EDE-Q. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) using principal-axis factoring based on polychoric correlations was conducted for the full sample (N = 188) using Varimax-Rotation with Kaiser-Normalization.
Results
Horn’s parallel analysis suggested a five-factor solution with an explained variance of 68%. The EFA factors were labeled “Restraint” (items 1, 3–6), “Body Dissatisfaction” (items 25–28), “Weight Concern” (items 10–12, 20), “Preoccupation” (items 7 and 8), and “Importance” (items 22 and 23). Items 2, 9, 19, 21, and 24 were excluded due to low communalities.
Conclusions
Factors associated with body concerns and body dissatisfaction in adult men with ED are not fully represented in the EDE-Q. This could be due to differences in body ideals in men, e.g., the underestimation of the role of concerns about musculature. Consequently, it may be useful to apply the 17-item five-factor structure of the EDE-Q presented here to adult men with diagnosed ED.}},

abstract = {{Vaseline, also referred to as petrolatum, is a colloidal dispersion of liquid-crystalline structures of hydrocarbons derived from petroleum. It has long been recognized for its versatile applications in the pharmaceutical industry, with its use in the formulation of various topical medications, wound care products, and drug delivery systems. For pharmaceutical use, petrolatum has to meet the quality standards described in its Pharmacopoeia monograph. The comprised test ranges allow for a broad range of Vaseline qualities on the market, while the tests themselves only poorly discriminate between grades. The only differentiating properties are related to the melting behavior, which is tested via drop point analysis, and the consistency, addressed in the functionality-related characteristics section. In this study, we propose the hypothesis that Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) could be a comparably simple method to evaluate the crystalline behavior of Vaseline qualities. We expect such information to provide additional details for Vaseline quality discrimination. This discrimination would allow the most suitable petroleum jelly to be selected for an existing formulation when the previous one needs to be replaced; for example, due to a manufacturer change. We demonstrate that NIRS in transmission and reflectance mode obtained by traditional continuous spectra acquisition and fragmented NIR spectra acquisition through multi-optical, multi-modal excitation, respectively, can both serve as a basis for detecting Vaseline quality differences, which we have further proven by thermal analysis and tests with semisolid formulations. Additionally, we demonstrate that a lower-cost multi-optical spectrometer in reflectance mode can detect Vaseline quality differences in rotated samples.}},

abstract = {{The article examines the existing infrastructure of open common spaces within two New Belgrade mass housing blocks (Blocks 23 and 70a) through a typo-morphological analysis. These spaces between the buildings, although the most neglected, underused, and deteriorated components of mass housing neighbourhoods, are at the same time crucial to the quality, vitality and integrated governance of these neighbourhoods. They represent the primary tangible commons in cities and neighbourhoods. The question of urban commons is increasingly present in scientific literature, urban and architectural discourse. Nevertheless, approaches exploring the spatiality of the urban commons are scarce, leading to insufficient understanding of the spatial aspect and potentials of the already existing commons. Therefore, this study includes (1) identification, typological decoding and classification of the common spaces, focusing on the case of New Belgrade blocks, followed by (2) analysis of the spatial patterns and integration of the identified spaces within the blocks. The study confirms the complexity and diverse typology of the common spaces. It finds that the in-between, common spaces contribute to higher integration of different segments of the blocks. The open common spaces have an essential role in humanisation of the blocks, and thus the quality of life in the blocks as integrated neighbourhoods. The findings indicate that the spatial setting of the open common spaces in New Belgrade blocks allows for (re)emergence of collective practices, leading to inclusive and integrated rehabilitation of the neighbourhoods.}},

abstract = {{Real-time human-centered assistance in industrial processes depends on the individual history of the work person’s activities in the work system and requires adequate methods for tracking the person’s actions. Most research in human activity recognition is based on recognizing actions from video data using computer vision methods. Digital equipment, standardized machine data interfaces, and smart wearable devices extend the possibilities to describe the current state of the work system. Petri nets have already been applied to human activity recognition, however, without the requirement of detecting actions in real-time. This paper proposes a Petri net architecture that enables hierarchical description-based human activity recognition in industrial work processes. We present an extension, a Partitioned Colored Petri Net, based on the colored Petri net formalism that infers activities from state transitions of the work system in real-time. In a case study, we demonstrate the Petri net’s application for an error-based learning system that visualizes error consequences in augmented reality using experimentable digital twins.}},

abstract = {{Continuous processes offer more environmentally friendlier beer production compared to the batch production. However, the continuous production of mashing has not become state-of-the-art in the brewing industry. The controllability and flexibility of this process still has hurdles for practical implementation, but which are necessary to react to changing raw materials. Once overcome, a continuous mashing can be efficiently adapted to the raw materials. Both mean residence time and temperature were investigated as key parameters to influence the extract and fermentable sugar content of the wort. The continuous mashing process was implemented as continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) cascade consisting of mashing in (20°C), protein rest (50°C), β-amylase rest (62-64°C), saccharification rest (72°C) and mashing out (78°C). Two different temperature settings for the β-amylase rest were investigated with particular emphasis on fermentable sugars. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and a post-hoc analysis showed that the mean residence time and temperature settings were suitable control parameters for the fermentable sugars. In the experimental conditions, the most pronounced effect was with the β-amylase rest. These results broaden the understanding of heterogenous CSTR mashing systems about assembly and selection of process parameters}},
