abstract = {{Introduction: In recent decades, there has been a rise in mental illnesses. Community infrastructures are increasingly acknowledged as important for sustaining good mental health. Moreover, green spaces are anticipated to offer advantages for both mental health and social cohesion. However, the mediating pathway between green space, social cohesion and mental health and especially the proximity and characteristics of green spaces that trigger these potential effects remain of interest. Methods: We gathered data from 1365 individuals on self-reported social cohesion and mental health across four satellite districts in European cities: Nantes (France), Porto (Portugal), Sofia (Bulgaria), and Hoje-Taastrup (Denmark). Green space data from OpenStreetMap was manually adjusted using the PRIGSHARE guidelines. We used the AID-PRIGSHARE tool to generate 7 indicators about green space characteristics measured in distances from 100-1500 m, every 100 m. This resulted in 105 different green space variables that we tested in a single mediation model with structural equation modelling. Results: Accessible greenness (900-1400 m), accessible green spaces (900-1500 m), accessible green space corridors (300-800 m), accessible total green space (300-800), and mix of green space uses (700-1100 m) were significantly associated with social cohesion and indirectly with mental health. Green corridors also showed negative indirect and direct associations with mental health in larger distances. Surrounding greenness and the quantity of green space uses were not associated with social cohesion nor indirectly with mental health. We also observed no positive direct associations between any green space variable in any distance to mental health. Conclusions: Our results suggest that accessibility, connectivity, mix of use and proximity are key characteristics that drive the relationship between green spaces, social cohesion and mental health. This gives further guidance to urban planners and decision-makers on how to design urban green spaces to foster social cohesion and improve mental health.}},

abstract = {{With the increasing complexity in manual assembly and a demographic decline in skilled workforce, the importance of well-documented processes through assembly instructions has grown. Creating these instructions is a time-consuming and knowledge-intensive task that typically relies on experienced employees. Although various automation solutions have been proposed to assist in generating assembly instructions, they often fall short in providing detailed textual guidance. With the rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI), new potentials arise in this domain. Therefore, this paper explores these potentials by employing various large language models (LLMs), prompting techniques and input data in an experimental setup for generating detailed assembly instructions, including the planning of assembly sequences as well as textual guidance on tools, assembly activities, and quality assurance measures. The findings reveal promising opportunities in leveraging LLMs but also substantial challenges, particularly in assembly sequence planning. To improve the reliability of generating assembly instructions, we propose a multi-agent concept that decomposes the complex task into simpler subtasks, each managed by specialized agents.}},

This article explains why this is the case and what universities can do to address this issue. It describes in detail the PLM course of the OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts located in Lemgo, Germany. In addition, suggestions are made on how to improve the course content, based on many years of experience. One way they could be reactivated for bidirectional on demand traffic is by small cabin-like vehicles, lateral stabilized by a system of control moment gyroscopes and a moveable mass. Regarding such a vehicle, there is currently no reference in comparison with other vehicles and no experimental experience or the like. To ensure the functionality and safety of the vehicle even before its realization, a model-based design is carried out for development, analysis, optimization and testing. This paper is focused on the co-simulation of such a vehicle that is controlled by a longitudinal control. In order to take into account the complex interaction between the longitudinal dynamics and the running gear, the entire system must be considered here including the wheel/rail interaction. Co-simulations are performed considering both the mechanical model of the vehicle and the control of the longitudinal dynamics of the overall system. The simulation results show that functionality and safe operation can be ensured by the vehicle longitudinal controls. As a result, the simulation and the measurement of the real system show a good match. By means of HIL and co-simulations, function tests could be shifted to earlier development stages, in order to accelerate the overall development.}},

Many architecture and interior architecture students struggle with the challenge of harmonizing the learned principles of building physics with their individual creative design processes. As a result, face-to-face correction discussions offered are often used ineffectively or even avoided by students due to insecurity. To counteract this, "As U know" provides students individual support independent of time and location, helping them prepare effectively for correction discussions.
In a survey conducted as part of the project, all users stated that the test version had supported or had rather supported them in applying the required building physics content. Forty six percent reported feeling less or tendentially less inhibited in taking advantage of the face-to-face corrections.}},

The authors, therefore, critically evaluated the performance of e-tongues regarding their qualification to assess peroral formulations containing bitter active pharmaceutical ingredients. A literature search using the keywords ‘electronic’, ‘tongue’, ‘bitter’, and ‘drug’ in a Web of Science search was therefore initially conducted. Reviewing the publications of the past decade, and further literature where necessary, allowed the authors to discuss whether and how e-tongues perform as expected and whether they have the potential to become a standard tool in drug development. Specifically highlighted are the expectations an e-tongue should meet. Further, a brief insight into the technologies of the utilized e-tongues is given. Reliable protocols were found that enable (i) the qualified performance of e-tongue instruments from an analytical perspective, (ii) proper taste-masking assessments, and (iii) under certain circumstances, the evaluation of bitterness.}},

However, as the definitions k nown in the literature are mostly applicable to one signal per sample, estimating the LOD for substances with instruments yielding multidimensional results like electronic noses (eNoses) is still challenging. In this paper, we will compare and present different approaches to estimate the LOD for eNoses by employing commonly used multivariate data analysis and regression techniques, including principal component analysis (PCA), principal component regression (PCR), as well as partial least squares regression (PLSR). These methods could subsequently be used to assess the suitability of eNoses to help control and steer processes where volatiles are key process parameters. As a use case, we determined the LODs for key compounds involved in beer maturation, namely acetaldehyde, diacetyl, dimethyl sulfide, ethyl acetate, isobutanol, and 2-phenylethanol, and discussed the suitability of our eNose for that dertermination process. The results of the methods performed demonstrated differences of up to a factor of eight. For diacetyl, the LOD and the LOQ were sufficiently low to suggest potential for monitoring via eNose. }},

Moreover, it portrays as a bridging technology to connect different scientific and industrial fields, e.g. Engineering, Medicine, etc. Consequently, additive manufacturing finds its applications in the production of patient-specific orthoses. This paper discusses the development of a pressure sensor based on an optical waveguide principle manufactured using stereolithography apparatus process to embed into a below-knee orthosis. For Orthopedic patients, the below-knee orthosis must be adjusted to the lower leg at regular intervals due to anthropometric changes in patient’s body to achieve proper mobility and correct load. Currently, this alteration relies on the patient’s estimation of support load which is only sub-optimal. Hence, the concept of developing an intelligent orthosis with a novel embedded optical system to monitor the exact support load at the neuralgic is proposed.}},

abstract = {{The recovery of beer from surplus yeast is to date an economical business case only for large breweries. In this work, a here novel process with rotating ceramic microfiltration membranes is used. This allows a very high lift force to be achieved while still maintaining a small transmembrane pressure to reduce the formation of a fouling layer. The results show that long running times (between cleanings) are possible, limited only by the change in the rheological properties of the suspension due to thickening. From a so-called "Inflexion Point" (IF), the filtration behavior changes abruptly. The aim of the work was therefore to use machine learning aided modeling to predict the IF from experimental data in order to optimize the process and to achieve the most economical conditions. The economic efficiency depends on the space-time yields. The results show that a significant improvement in economic efficiency could be possible with the help of modeling and this special kind of filtration technology. However, the economic efficiency depends finally on the conditions in each individual brewery.}},

Despite recuperation, the heat requirement is very high and can be significantly reduced by lowering the maximum temperature in the pasteurizer. The current practice of calculating the lethal heat effect is based on the so-called beer formula using a globalized z-value for the temperature dependence of the inactivation. The premise experiments here is that for products containing sugar, such as malt beer, yeast cells pose the greatest danger. Therefore, the D values at various temperatures and the z values of three of the Krombacher Brewery's own yeasts (bottom-fermenting and top-fermenting) were determined in the laboratory using the capillary method. In a challenge test in the brewery, bottles with different products were inoculated with these yeasts and samples were taken from the industrial pasteurizer every two minutes and examined for viable cell counts. Accordingly, using specific D/z values, precise pasteurization can be achieved, the treatment temperature can be reduced to 55° C and 20-25% of energy can be saved.}},

abstract = {{The handling of beer-yeast suspensions (BYS) occurs in several brewery processes , as in pitching, propagation or beer recovery. Highly concentrated BYS do not behave like a shear thinning fluid but like a dilatant fluid. Above a solid content >18% shear stress, as generated turbulences or wall friction increases the dynamic viscosity of the fluid. It is precisely here that influencing factors that have received little attention as the effect of different cell sizes to date can make themselves felt. Even if there is only one yeast strain used in a brewery different cell sizes can occur when there are different osmotic pressures, induced by sugar and alcohol concentration. In this work, the cell size distributions of a Saccharomyces strain were artificially varied and measured. Rheological studies were then carried out on these BYS. Results show that increasing mean cell diameters (sauter diameter) lead to a change in the rheological behavior. It is assumed that cell sizes are also relevant to processing in practice, especially where high concentrations are achieved. Especially for handling these highly concentrated BYS with high shear pumps or agitators it is therefore important to know the relationship between the mean cell diameter and the either shear thinning or shear thickening rheological behavior, because even with the same yeast concentration both rheological behaviors can occur.}},

abstract = {{Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCL) are widely used in sealing applications throughout the world. In applications with constant water heads - such as artificial ponds, rivers, canals, etc. - the permeation rate through the GCL is of vital importance to the performance of the whole structure and the allocated function. A proper design must consider all potential sources of water loss in the designed application. This includes also the performance of overlaps or the combined effect of multiple sealing layers. Some factors are sometimes misinterpreted, underestimated or not considered.
The presented paper will focus on two major topics, each affecting the performance of geosynthetic sealing systems with special focus on geosynthetic clay liners (GCL). The impact of these effect is to be illustrated on exemplary calculations for virtual projects. The quantification of these effects will result in recommendations that shall help to anticipate unfavorable situations for the operational phase of a project already in the design stage. This shall contribute to a better overall understanding of GCL and help to avoid preventable design errors. An outlook shall summarize the further efforts envisaged by the authors to provide a simple tool to allow calculation of permeation rates for GCL or complete barrier systems.}},

The thickness of the boards was reduced with compression ratios of 40%, 60% and 75%. Since densified wood tends to recover from compression, especially under humid conditions, this study examined the set-recovery and the hygroscopic behavior of THM densified oil palm wood. The equilibrium moisture content (EMC), differential swelling and swelling coefficient, linear swelling and shrinkage as well as the differential swelling anisotropy were determined under climate conditions with different relative humidity (RH) (20°C/35% RH, 20°C/65% RH and 20°C/85% RH). The maximum swelling was measured after water soaking and the remaining set-recovery was evaluated after re-drying at 103°C. The EMC was reduced by the THM process by around 20%. In the direction of compression (thickness), the densified specimens show higher values for all analyzed swelling and shrinkage parameters than the undensified specimens from the equivalent position within the trunk. The maximum swelling in thickness of 22–38% during water soaking is mostly reversed by shrinkage during re-drying and a comparably low remaining set-recovery of 3–8% is measured at oven dry condition.}},

abstract = {{One obstacle to the industrial processing of oil palm wood is its nearly water-saturated state in green condition and its high tendency to develop cell collapse during kiln drying. This study analyzed mechanical dewatering by flat compression as an alternative pre-drying method for wet oil palm sawn timber. In the process, boards 700 mm long were compressed at ratios of 40% and 60% using a laboratory press, which resulted in water extraction of the free water varying between 38–52% and 60–73%, respectively. Since unperforated press plates were used, the water could only escape over the crosscut and long edges. The extent to which the crosscut and long edges were involved in dewatering was examined, and found to depend on the position of the board in the trunk due to the different water permeability conditions at the different heights. Permeability measurements, therefore, were carried out on cylindrical specimens using a specifically designed testing device. For the analysis of the hydrostatic pressure development in the boards, three pressure transducers were installed at different distances to the crosscut at half board thickness. The analysis of the recovery of compression showed, that the boards recovered to a large extend immediately after compression.}},

abstract = {{The application of hydrogen for energy storage and as a vehicle fuel necessitates efficient and effective storage technologies. In addition to traditional cryogenic and high-pressure tanks, an alternative approach involves utilizing porous materials such as activated carbons within the storage tank. The adsorption behaviour of hydrogen in porous structures is described using the Dubinin-Astakhov isotherm. To model the flow of hydrogen within the tank, we rely on the equations of mass conservation, the Navier-Stokes equations, and the equation of energy conservation, which are implemented in a computational fluid dynamics code and additional terms account for the amount of hydrogen involved in sorption and the corresponding heat release. While physical models are valuable, data-driven models often offer computational advantages. Based on the data from the physical adsorption model, a data-driven model is derived using various machine learning techniques. This model is then incorporated as source terms in the governing conservation equations, resulting in a novel hybrid formulation which is computationally more efficient. Consequently, a new method is presented to compute the temperature and concentration distribution during the charging and discharging of hydrogen tanks and identifying any limiting phenomena more easily.}},

All properties tested show a much higher exponential increase with the density, following power law relationships with exponents > 1, than common wood species and a significant gradient over both trunk height and cross section. Oil palm wood can be seen as a unidirectional long-fiber-reinforced bio-composite, if vascular bundles are considered as reinforcements (fibers) and parenchymatous ground tissue as matrix. The adapted rule-of-mixture based on the number of vascular bundles per unit area can be confirmed for the density, but not for the tensile properties, because the number of vascular bundles per unit area and share of fibers within the bundles is greater in the periphery than in the trunk central tissue. Furthermore, cell wall thickening over time is more pronounced in the peripheral than in the central tissue and more at the bottom than near the top. Different from small test specimens from common wood species, the compression strength exceeds the tensile strength: fc,0 : fm : ft,0 is 1.4 : 2.2–1.2 : 1. The performance indices for minimum weight design by Ashby and coworkers are comparable to that for coconut and date palm wood.}},

abstract = {{Deployment of Level 3 and Level 4 autonomous vehicles (AVs) in urban environments is significantly constrained by adverse weather conditions, limiting their operation to clear weather due to safety concerns. Ensuring that AVs remain within their designated Operational Design Domain (ODD) is a formidable challenge, making boundary monitoring strategies essential for safe navigation. This study explores the critical role of an ODD monitoring system (OMS) in addressing these challenges. It reviews various methodologies for designing an OMS and presents a comprehensive visualization framework incorporating trigger points for ODD exits. These trigger points serve as essential references for effective OMS design. The study also delves into a specific use case concerning ODD exits: the reduction in road friction due to adverse weather conditions. It emphasizes the importance of contactless computer vision-based methods for road condition estimation (RCE), particularly using vision sensors such as cameras. The study details a timeline of methods involving classical machine learning and deep learning feature extraction techniques, identifying contemporary challenges such as class imbalance, lack of comprehensive datasets, annotation methods, and the scarcity of generalization techniques. Furthermore, it provides a factual comparison of two state-of-the-art RCE datasets. In essence, the study aims to address and explore ODD exits due to weather-induced road conditions, decoding the practical solutions and directions for future research in the realm of AVs.}},

abstract = {{The aim of the present study was to texturise protein from sunflower press cake (SPC) for being consumed as dry snack or, in its hydrated state, as a meat analogue. In preliminary experiments, feed moisture (15–25 g 100 g−1) and extrusion temperature (180 °C–200 °C) were varied when processing commercial sunflower protein flour with a protein content of 51.8 g per 100 g dry matter using low moisture single-screw extrusion. The extrudates were analysed with regard to specific mechanical energy needs, texture properties in dry and hydrated state, colour, expansion ratio and water binding capacity. Extrusion parameters for achieving maximum expansion, textural force and minimal product moisture were found to be 180 °C and 15 g 100 g−1. Consequently, texturised protein was derived from deoiled SPC using these extrusion parameters. Initial deoiling of the press cake was necessary as it improved texturisation; a higher SME input reached led to increased cross-linking of the protein matrix. The light coloured and significantly expanded extrudates with high water binding capacity and could serve as basis for further development of snack products or meat analogues.}},

abstract = {{The application of hydrogen in order to store energy and as a vehicle fuel requires efficient and effective storage technologies. An alternative solution to cryogenic and high pressure tanks is the use of porous material and physisorption (carbons, metal organic frameworks) or chemisorption (hydrides) in the tank. Due to the heat of sorption the temperature and its distribution in the tank might vary significantly during charging and discharging, affecting the storage capacity. The flow of the hydrogen in the tank is described by the equation of mass conservation, the Navier-Stokes equations and the equation of energy conservation as implemented in a CFD code. In the conservation equation additional terms are implemented in order to account for the amount of hydrogen involved in the sorption and the corresponding heat of sorption. These result from the mass and energy balance for the hydrogen in a finite volume whereat the equilibrium is described by an appropriate sorption isotherm. The use of data driven models is often computationally more advantageous then physical models. Based on the physical adsorption model a data driven model is derived using different machine learning techniques. This model is implemented as source terms in the governing equations, leading to a computationally more advantageous formulation. Thus the distribution of temperature and concentration during charging and discharging of the tanks is computed and limiting phenomena are identified.}},

These gaps often result in redundant task execution across incompatible systems. Robotic Process Automation (RPA) emerges as a solution by automating such tasks. However, selecting the right processes that will be subjected to RPA is crucial to avoid failures and resource waste. Therefore, this paper introduces a four-stage method to evaluate processes for RPA suitability, grounded on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). By systematically analyzing scientific literature and incorporating weights from RPA experts, this paper sheds light on the complex nature of process selection criteria for RPA. Tested in a company, the method facilitates the process selection, indicating its practical applicability.}},

abstract = {{In Germany, individuals unable or not yet able to return to the general labor market due to disabilities are employed in sheltered workshops which are called WfbM (“Werkstätten für behinderte Menschen”). These organizations are required to earn the wages for the aforementioned group of people by offering market services. These services include, in particular, assembly activities. However, WfbM face the challenge that customer orders tend to become more complex, especially as a result of an increased number of product variants. This development not only has an impact on the work in WfbM, but also makes it much more difficult to achieve the desired inclusion of people with disabilities in the general labor market. Bearing this in mind, the research question addressed in this article can be stated as such: How far can the use of an informational assistance system compensate for performance deficits of people with disabilities in the context of assembly? The results of the conducted laboratory study show that the implementation of an assistance system can help to reduce existing barriers and challenges resulting from the mismatch between requirements of the general labor market and the performance characteristics of people with cognitive impairments.
Practical Relevance: For people with disabilities, the use of assistance systems opens up new opportunities for participation in the general labor market and thus makes an important contribution to implementing the requirements of the “Bundesteilhabegesetz” (a law to strengthen participation of people with disabilities in Germany).}},

SPACH) and Noble fir (Abies procera REHD.) for Christmas trees, intending to convert them into high forests. Climate-related damage, especially since 2018, has significantly reduced spruce populations, requirering a shift towards climate-adaptable tree species in future forests. Additionally, to reduce CO2 emissions from construction, there's a push for expanding timber construction, requiring non-spruce species for load-bearing products and applications. Although Nordmann and Noble fir are potential alternatives to spruce, they are not yet integrated into European standardization for load-bearing construction. Therefore, an assessment of German-origin Nordmann and Noble fir for use in glued laminated building products (GLT and CLT) is underway. Kiln-dried lamellas are graded visually and by machine using longitudinal vibration, with selected lamellas tested for tensile strength. Various mechanical properties are determined using non-destructive and destructive methods to establish input parameters for Finite Element Analysis (FEA). }},

Such comics are already used in our Gekonnt hanDeln web platform. The AI assistance provides suggestions for the overall story outline as well as how to design and write individual story frames. abstract = {{Aim:
Food loss and waste are significant challenges to the sustainability of food systems. This study aims to explore innovative approaches for reducing food waste and valorizing side-streams, focusing specifically on oat okara, a by-product of oat milk production. The aim is to extract and purify proteins from oat okara through enzymatic processes, with the ultimate goal of creating a sustainable protein source for various applications.
Method:
Oat okara was subjected to enzymatic treatment and hydrolysis using a pressure filter press. Enzymatic processes were optimized to achieve high protein yields with purity exceeding 80%. The hydrolysate was then concentrated using a rotary evaporator and purified through membrane filtration to remove impurities and smaller molecules.
Additionally, a chromatography system was employed to further purify the protein fractions and isolate individual peptides. This comprehensive approach ensures the extraction of high-quality proteins suitable for various applications.
Results:
The enzymatic extraction and purification process yielded proteins with high purity (>80%) from oat okara. The pressure filter press efficiently facilitated enzymatic hydrolysis, resulting in a hydrolysate rich in protein content. Subsequent concentration and purification steps effectively removed impurities, enhancing the quality of the protein extract.
Furthermore, chromatography enabled the isolation of individual peptides, further enhancing the value-added potential of the extracted proteins.
Conclusion:
This study demonstrates the feasibility of enzymatic extraction and purification of proteins from oat okara, a by-product of oat milk production. The extracted proteins hold promise as sustainable alternatives for various applications, including food and cosmetic industries. By valorizing side-streams and reducing food waste, this approach contributes to the development of more sustainable food systems.

In this study, we focus on gender differences in expectations and gender specific stereotypic mindsets in a dictator game, building on Blanckenburg, Tebbe, & Iseke (2023). We add to prior work by differentiating between stereotypical behavior and stereotypical expectations. Accordingly, we extended the classic dictator game by three steps in order to study whether recipients develop stereotypical beliefs regarding the dictator’s gender based on the amount of money the dictator has allocated to them. First, we asked recipients to estimate the amount. We then revealed the amount the dictator actually allocated to the recipient and finally, we asked the recipient to assess the dictator’s gender. In contrast to and building on previous results which show no gender differences regarding the amount the dictators allocate, we find evidence for stereotypical expectations of the recipients based on the amount the dictator allocates to them.}},

abstract = {{Deployment of Level 3 and Level 4 autonomous vehicles (AVs) in urban environments is significantly constrained by adverse weather conditions, limiting their operation to clear weather due to safety concerns. In essence, the study aims to address and explore ODD exits due to weather-induced road conditions, decoding the practical solutions and directions for future research in the realm of AVs.}},

abstract = {{Lakes represent a vital source of freshwater, accounting for 87% of the Earth’s accessible surface freshwater resources and providing a range of ecosystem services, including water for human consumption. As climate change continues to unfold, understanding the potential evaporative water losses from lakes becomes crucial for effective water management strategies. Here we investigate the impacts of climate change on the evaporation rates of 23 European lakes and reservoirs of varying size during the warm season (July–September). To assess the evaporation trends, we employ a 12-member ensemble of model projections, utilizing three one-dimensional process-based lake models. These lake models were driven by bias-corrected climate simulations from four General Circulation Models (GCMs), considering both a historical (1970–2005) and future (2006–2099) period. Our findings reveal a consistent projection of increased warm-season evaporation across all lakes this century, though the magnitude varies depending on specific factors. By the end of this century (2070–2099), we estimate a 21%, 30% and 42% average increase in evaporation rates in the studied European lakes under RCP (Representative Concentration Pathway) 2.6, 6.0 and 8.5, respectively. Moreover, future projections of the relationship between precipitation (P) and evaporation (E) in the studied lakes, suggest that P-E will decrease this century, likely leading to a deficit in the availability of surface water. The projected increases in evaporation rates underscore the significance of adapting strategic management approaches for European lakes to cope with the far-reaching consequences of climate change.}},

abstract = {{Net ecosystem production (NEP) is an important indicator of lake ecosystem function and integrity. An earlier study, restricted to one geographical region, indicated that oxygen saturation levels (DO%) might be used to predict daily NEP in shallow lakes. To test the generality of the method, we used DO% data collected in a standardised pan-European mesocosm experiment with contrasting trophic states and water levels covering a large climate gradient (from Sweden to Turkey). We corroborated these data with process-based DO simulations. The NEP ~ DO% relation depended on factors influencing gas transfer: water depth and wind. The NEP ~ DO% relation per volume became weaker with increasing depth (1–2 m) but was independent of depth when area based. Simulations indicated that the marginalisation of the depth was sensitive to wind conditions. Trophic status, temperature and light showed no or only marginal (climate zone) effects (experimental data), while the simulations indicated influence of those factors under particular wind–depth conditions. We confirmed that when considering also wind and depth effects, midday DO% potentially provides reliable estimates of daily NEP. Therefore, historical monitoring data of DO% might be used to estimate NEP, and process-based oxygen models may be valuable tool therein. We encourage further tests.}},

abstract = {{Aquatic ecosystems are threatened by eutrophication from nutrient pollution. In lakes, eutrophication causes a plethora of deleterious effects, such as harmful algal blooms, fish kills and increased methane emissions. However, lake-specific responses to nutrient changes are highly variable, complicating eutrophication management. These lake-specific responses could result from short-term stochastic drivers overshadowing lake-independent, long-term relationships between phytoplankton and nutrients. Here, we show that strong stoichiometric long-term relationships exist between nutrients and chlorophyll a (Chla) for 5-year simple moving averages (SMA, median R² = 0.87) along a gradient of total nitrogen to total phosphorus (TN:TP) ratios. These stoichiometric relationships are consistent across 159 shallow lakes (defined as average depth < 6 m) from a cross-continental, open-access database. We calculate 5-year SMA residuals to assess short-term variability and find substantial short-term Chla variation which is weakly related to nutrient concentrations (median R² = 0.12). With shallow lakes representing 89% of the world’s lakes, the identified stoichiometric long-term relationships can globally improve quantitative nutrient management in both lakes and their catchments through a nutrient-ratio-based strategy.}},

abstract = {{Water quality and hypoxia in lakes and reservoirs are strongly associated with water renewal. Yet vertical water exchange is still not fully understood and challenging to evaluate in highly dynamic systems. Here, we applied a scaling approach using the vertical timescale, vertical water age (VWA), defined as time since a water parcel last touched the water surface. We established a 3D hydrodynamic-based age model to quantify the vertical water renewal in Xiangxi Bay, a tributary bay of the Three Gorges Dam. The integrated effects of hydrodynamic processes like stratification, intruding density currents from the mainstream, and upstream inflow on the vertical renewal were accounted for. Results indicated that the spatial–temporal distribution of VWA in Xiangxi Bay depended on stratification and forms of intruding density currents. Age was large in spring and summer, and small in autumn and winter, reaching a maximum of 25 days in April. The vertical water renewal was faster during bottom intrusions from the mainstream than during middle and surface intrusions. At times, the epilimnion contained old water due to circulations, and the hypolimnion contained young water due to upstream flushing. In contrast to natural lakes, the bottom water was often younger than overlying intermediate waters. This demonstrated that mixed layer depth was insufficient to fully capture the vertical exchange in riverine systems with significant surface/bottom intrusion. The findings suggested VWA as a quantitative measure of vertical water transport in highly dynamic systems and its usability for environmental water management.}},

abstract = {{Within freshwater networks, lakes and reservoirs are reactors that modify nutrient dynamics. Their functioning is based on an interplay of hydrological and biogeochemical processes, rendering them vulnerable to climate change. Future changes in catchment characteristics are likely to alter the timing and magnitude of nutrient concentrations in discharge. This study investigated the impact of changing variability of nutrient concentrations on lake and reservoir dynamics. We examined intraannual nutrient retention and analyzed the role of reservoirs in reconfiguring the variability of nutrients. Utilizing the 1D lake model GOTM-WET, we simulated nutrient processing in a mesotrophic reservoir. Further, we performed scenario simulations by modifying the variability of inflow nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations. Our findings indicate that the reservoir removed ∼4% and ∼12% of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP), respectively. Particulate fractions were retained efficiently, but there was a net export of dissolved organic fractions. Regarding mixing and stratification periods, however, we observed net nitrogen export during stratification in certain years. During stratification, outflow concentration variability remained relatively unchanged for TN and TP compared to inflow concentrations. Conversely, phosphate and nitrate concentration variability increased in the outflow because of in-lake assimilation and the influence of hydrological events. With increasing inflow concentration variability during stratification, there was decreased removal of TN and TP by the reservoir, but increased variability of concentration. By evaluating the lake's capacity to attenuate variability of nutrient inflows under altered conditions, there are opportunities to improve monitoring of nutrient export and evaluate the potential impact of nutrient peaks on downstream drinking water resources and ecosystems.}},

abstract = {{Water-level reduction frequently occurs in deep reservoirs, but its effect on dissolved oxygen concentration is not well understood. In this study we used a well-established water quality model to illustrate effects of water level dynamics on oxygen concentration in Rappbode Reservoir, Germany. We then systematically elucidated the potential of selective withdrawal to control hypoxia under changing water levels. Our results documented a gradual decrease of hypolimnetic oxygen concentration under decreasing water level, and hypoxia occurred when the initial level was lower than 410 m a.s.l (71 m relative to the reservoir bottom). We also suggested that changes of hypoxic region, under increasing hypolimnetic withdrawal discharge, followed a unimodal trajectory with the maximum hypoxic area projected under the discharge between 3 m3/sec and 4 m3/sec. Besides, our results illustrated the extent of hypoxia was most effectively inhibited if the withdrawal strategy was applied at the end of stratification with the outlet elevation at the deepest part of the reservoir. Moreover, hypoxia can be totally avoided under a hybrid elevation withdrawal strategy using surface withdrawal during early and mid stratification, and deep withdrawal at the end of stratification. We further confirmed the decisive role of thermal structure in the formation of hypoxia under water-level reduction and withdrawal strategies. We believe the conclusions from this study can be applied to many deep waters in the temperate zone, and the results should guide stakeholders to mitigate negative impacts of hypoxia on aquatic ecosystems.}},
