  abstract     = {{This paper extends a previously developed biobjective Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) methodology for reducing electricity costs and CO2 emissions in Smart-E-Factory applications. While the earlier approach assumed fixed photovoltaic (PV) and battery capacities, we now propose a cascaded optimization framework to determine the optimal sizing (power rating and orientation of the PV system, battery capacity) while simultaneously optimizing battery dispatch. The cost function combines operational costs with amortized investment costs of both PV and battery systems, embedded in a dynamic scheduling optimization that addresses real-time electricity price and CO2 signals. Numerical results indicate that intermediate capacities and balanced east/west orientation maximize cost-effectiveness and emission reductions. This study underscores the value of coupling parametric design and dispatch optimization to achieve scalable, sustainable solutions for industrial energy systems.}},

  abstract     = {{German consumers have high expectations for the freshness of bakery products. When products like burger buns or toast are not sufficiently soft, significant food waste results. In traditional recipes, sucrose plays several important roles, including extending the shelf life of bread, but it also adds undesirable calories. Allulose is a promising sugar alternative with several technological advantages, such as enhanced browning and improved freshness. This study investigated the effect of allulose on the freshness of yeast-based bakery products compared to sucrose and fructose. Regardless of grain type or flour, the use of allulose led to earlier starch gelatinization, which slowed down starch retrogradation. Storage tests of burger buns at 20 °C and 4 °C showed that buns made with allulose had a softer crumb, higher moisture content, and lower water activity (aw-value) over the entire storage period. The improved freshness was also confirmed by descriptive sensory analysis. These results suggest that using allulose can enhance the freshness of yeast-based bakery products and help reduce food waste caused by excessively dry crumbs. Allulose not only improves texture but also contributes to reducing the environmental impact of food waste by prolonging product freshness.}},

  abstract     = {{The paper explores the correlation between the concepts of territoriality and social practices in the context of urban and rural (re-)production of space. It traces the degree of “habitualisation” of certain actions and the behaviour of stakeholders, identifying those defined as practices, and revealing their role in the (dis-)continuation of territoriality of a region. It takes a German region Ostwestfalen-Lippe (OWL) as a case study. The research methodology is based on the practice theory of Andreas Reckwitz and his “praxeological quadrat of cultural analysis”, which is applied in this study. The research process includes (a) semi-structured interviews with the representatives of several institutions from the region, (b) narrative analysis and thematic content structuring of the interviews and (c) synthesis analysis. The study clarifies relations between the artefacts and discourses mentioned by the interviewees, and their impact on the practices of the institutions and others contributing to the (dis-)continuation of territoriality and identity of the region. The main findings are related to the (1) methodological contribution—operationalisation of the “praxeological quadrat of cultural analysis”, and (2) substantive contribution—revealing the role of social practices on the continuation of territoriality of the region. The article presents cultural patterns in the perception of and orientation towards long-past territorialities by the interviewees and makes clear what significance these historical and historicising spatial references have for the spatial planning of the present.</jats:p>}},

  abstract     = {{Daylight saving time (DST) affects millions of people in various everyday situations and is a common topic of debate in legislative parliaments around the world. This paper presents a literature review on the effects of the clock change and DST on electricity usage, health, crime rates, road safety, and economic aspects. This addresses a gap in current literature reviews, as there is a lack of linked analyses considering these research fields. We show that there are partial positive effects on crime rates and road safety generally that result from the delay in ambient light availability. This contrasts with the clearly negative effects on health and the economic aspects, which are mainly driven by the disturbed circadian rhythm and the resulting sleep problems. Furthermore, we find that the initial idea of DST to save electricity will probably no longer apply and may even lead to increased usage. This literature review provides a basis for future research and promotes interdisciplinary research by summarizing current findings in a cross-disciplinary manner and identifying research gaps and opportunities. Furthermore, the findings may guide policy-making discussions and decisions. }},

  abstract     = {{Die vorliegende Bachelorarbeit untersucht die zentrale Forschungsfrage, ob der Einsatz von Künstlicher Intelligenz heute und in der Zukunft maßgebliche Auswirkungen auf die kreativen und produktiven Prozesse in der Musikproduktion der E-Musik hat. Ausgehend von einer historischen Einordnung, die bis in die 1950er Jahre zurückreicht, analysiert die Arbeit aktuelle Entwicklungen und Anwendungsmöglichkeiten von KI in diesem spezifischen musikalischen Bereich. Dabei werden sowohl technische Grundlagen als auch die enge Verbindung zwischen Musik und Mathematik beleuchtet, die den Einsatz von KI in der Musikproduktion ermöglichen.
Ein besonderer Fokus liegt auf der empirischen Untersuchung mittels qualitativer Interviews mit Experten aus dem Bereich der E-Musik. Diese offenbaren, dass KI gegenwärtig primär als unterstützendes Werkzeug wahrgenommen und eingesetzt wird, wobei sich deutliche Unterschiede zwischen kommerzieller Musik und E-Musik abzeichnen. Während für den kommerziellen Bereich tiefgreifende Veränderungen erwartet werden, prognostizieren die Experten für die E-Musik eine stabilere Entwicklung.
Die Arbeit identifiziert zentrale Herausforderungen bei der Integration von KI, insbesondere bei der Übersetzung künstlerischer Ideen in maschinenverständliche Anweisungen sowie der Wahrung künstlerischer Authentizität. Gleichzeitig werden neue Möglichkeiten der Produktionsunterstützung und kreativen Inspiration aufgezeigt. Die Untersuchung schließt mit einem Ausblick auf zukünftige Entwicklungen und Forschungsrichtungen, wobei sowohl technologische als auch kulturelle und rechtliche Aspekte berücksichtigt werden.}},

  abstract     = {{Additive manufacturing of optical, electrical, and mechanical components is a beneficial approach for the rapid prototyping of components and error elimination, with short turnaround times. However, additively manufactured components usually have rough surfaces that need post-processing, particularly for optical components, where the surface roughness must be a small fraction of the wavelength. We demonstrate an innovative and economical approach by dip-coating with the same resin used for printing in a simple post-processing step, providing high transparency to the 3D-printed optical components and reducing surface roughness while achieving perfect index matching of the coating layer. The surface roughness of the 3D-printed optical components drops to 5 nm (arithmetic average) after the dip-coating process. We observed significant performance enhancements after comparing the unprocessed optical components and the dip-coated optical components, including optical transparency and a shiny surface finish for previously rough surfaces.}},

  abstract     = {{In dieser Arbeit wurde die Funktion des Sounddesigns untersucht, mit Blick auf Narration, Atmosphäre und Emotionen. Die theoretische Grundlage wurde anhand der historischen Entwicklung, der Gegenwart sowie zukünftiger Entwicklungen betrachtet und in verschiedene Kategorien unterteilt, die das Sounddesign strukturieren. Dazu gehören unter anderem Geräusche, Musik und virtuelle Räume. Die zentrale Theorie dieser Arbeit lautet, dass diese Elemente gezielt eingesetzt werden können, um die Narration zu steuern, Stimmungen zu erzeugen und emotionale Reaktionen der Zuhörenden zu beeinflussen.
Diese Theorie wurde anhand verschiedener konkreter Hörspiele überprüft, darunter das eigens erstellte „Lost in the Blind Sea – Eine Reise ins Unbekannte“. Die Hörspiele wurden innerhalb der festgelegten Kategorien beschrieben und analysiert. Dabei ließ sich feststellen, dass Sounddesign gezielt genutzt wird, um akustische Räume zu gestalten, Stimmungen zu erzeugen und die Narration zu strukturieren. Besonders die Kombination aus Einzelgeräuschen, Atmos und Musik erwies sich als wesentliches Element zur Unterstützung der Hörspielinszenierung.}},

  abstract     = {{Die präzise und kosteneffiziente 3D-Rekonstruktion industrieller Umgebungen gewinnt zu-nehmend an Bedeutung, insbesondere für digitale Zwillinge und automatisierte Inspektions-prozesse. Diese Arbeit untersucht die Entwicklung und Evaluierung eines multisensorischen Kamera-Setups, das mit Gaussian Splatting eine speichereffiziente und schnelle Modellierung von Produktionsumgebungen ermöglicht. Dafür wurde ein mobiles, autonomes System auf Basis eines MiR-Roboters entwickelt, das Bilddaten von verschiedenen USB-Kameras (Lo-gitech Brio, Anker C200), einer DSLR und iPhone Kamera sowie Raspberry Pi Kameras er-fasst und verarbeitet. 
Die zentrale Forschungsfrage adressiert die Effizienz, Bildqualität und Wirtschaftlichkeit von Gaussian Splatting im Vergleich zu etablierten Verfahren wie Photogrammetrie und LiDAR. Erste Testläufe mit DSLR-Aufnahmen und einer manuell rekonstruierten Pipeline zeigen, dass Gaussian Splatting hochdetaillierte Punktwolken generieren kann, jedoch mit Herausfor-derungen hinsichtlich Kameraausrichtung, Überlappung der Bilder und automatisierter Missi-onsplanung des Roboters konfrontiert ist. 
Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass das System eine schnelle und speichereffiziente 3D-Rekonstruk-tion ermöglicht, jedoch in seiner aktuellen Form noch Optimierungspotenzial aufweist. Be-sonders die genaue Kalibrierung der Kameras, eine verbesserte Synchronisation der Bilder so-wie eine präzisere Steuerung des Roboters sind entscheidend für die Qualität der Punktwol-ken. Während Gaussian Splatting eine überzeugende Alternative zu klassischen Verfahren darstellt, ist die Systemstabilität derzeit noch abhängig von manuellen Eingriffen und Justie-rungen. 
Zukünftige Arbeiten sollten sich darauf konzentrieren, die Automatisierung des gesamten Workflows weiter voranzutreiben, insbesondere durch den Einsatz verbesserter Kamera-A-lignment-Algorithmen, Hardware-Trigger für synchrone Bildaufnahme und Machine-Learn-ing-gestützte Bildoptimierung. Zudem könnte eine Erweiterung des Systems um zusätzliche Sensortechnologien wie Time-of-Flight-Sensoren oder LiDAR-Module helfen, die Detailge-nauigkeit weiter zu verbessern und eine robuste Echtzeit-Rekonstruktion zu ermöglichen. }},

Daraus ergab sich, dass der vorgeschlagene Workﬂow über zahlreiche Vorteile, wie die Steigerung von Kreativität, sowie die Verbesserung der teaminternen Kommunikation, verfügt und dadurch das Potential hat Zeit und Geld in Produktionen einzusparen. Jedoch hängt die Wahl des passenden Character-Modeling-Workﬂows nach wie vor von den Anforderungen des jeweiligen Projekts ab und lässt sich somit nicht pauschalisieren. }},

Ziel der Studie war es, die Frage zu beantworten, inwiefern Lichtgestaltung einen Ausstellungsraum für unterschiedliche Besucher:innen, insbesondere für Menschen mit Seheinschränkungen, zugänglicher und inklusiver machen kann.
Die Studie wurde von einem Team aus Expert:innen der Raumwahrnehmung und Lichtgestaltung durchgeführt, darunter Paula Longato (Buro Happold), Prof. Ulrich Nether (IDS) und Kristina Herrmann (IDS), Justin Groot (Sentistic), sowie Studierende der Innenarchitektur in Kooperation mit der Deutschen Arbeitswelt Ausstellung (DASA) und unterstützt durch die Lichttechnik des Unternehmens Zumtobel.
Die Sonderausstellung „Respekt“ in Dortmund diente als Forschungsplattform. Durch die partizipative Einbeziehung von Menschen mit Seheinschränkungen wurde ein Forschungsdesign entwickelt, das spezifische Erkenntnisse über die Rolle der Lichtwahrnehmung und deren Bedeutung für die inklusive Gestaltung von Ausstellungsräumen generieren sollte.}},

  abstract     = {{A human digital twin (HDT) is a virtual representation of a worker in cyberspace. Nevertheless, current research focusses mainly on HDTs for motoric work types, such as assembly. To fully integrate an HDT for workers in production, it is necessary that an HDT also displays cognitive processes like memorizing, thinking or reasoning. Such a concept can be used in information-based work, for example monitoring highly automated production systems, and contribute to the planning and control of production. Due to the high proportion of planning and decision-making processes, the efficiency of information-based work is determined in particular by the inner processes of the worker. An HDT can therefore help to describe current and future states of socio-technical work systems. Therefore, this paper presents a systematic literature review to explicitly derive the relevant components of an HDT for information-based work types. The elements of such an HDT and its environment are defined. Further, the current gaps in literature are identified. There are currently no real-world applications of such an HDT. Additionally, the value of multi-HDT systems must be evaluated more extensively.}},

It is crucial to gain an in-depth understanding of the failure mechanisms and their interactions, as well as to systematically analyze the failure mechanisms of connectors, assess their state of health, and predict the probability of failure in the future. This work provides a comprehensive overview of degradation mechanisms in electrical connectors, including fretting corrosion, oxidation, delamination, wear through of the protective coating, stress relaxation and plastic deformation. It focuses on mechanisms that contribute to increased contact resistance over time and proposes a unified model to explain their interactions. The study introduces a structured methodology for assessing connector health by outlining key measurement techniques and presenting an efficient approach to failure and state analysis that minimizes both testing time and sample size. This methodology is supported by analyses of connectors from long-term life tests and field-used, field-tested vehicles. Additionally, the study explores new aspects of the state analysis for accelerated testing of connectors, supported by examples from field-tested vehicles and various test methods, to predict connectors lifetime and evaluate the effectiveness of existing testing approaches.}},

  abstract     = {{In a previous paper, the correlation between the wear resistance of coatings and the lifetime of electrical connectors under fretting load was discovered. Based on this knowledge, various modifications of silver-based coatings with markedly increased wear resistance have been developed, and a calculation model for predicting connector lifetime has been formulated. Investigations on silver-coated electrical contacts with increased wear resistance show extended lifetimes in fretting wear and fretting corrosion tests, and the calculation model with various modified coating materials can be validated. However, contacts with very high wear-resistant coatings fail earlier than the specific wear coefficient and the calculation model prediction suggest.
The in-depth investigation of the coating material and the wear scar revealed the reasons for this unexpectedly shorter lifetime. The high wear resistance of modified silver coatings is achieved by increased micro-hardness. Both coatings with coating materials of high hardness and high thickness can lead to longer lifetimes under fretting load. However, increased fretting cycles can also cause fatigue and electrical contacts can fail due to delamination of the surface coating caused by fretting fatigue, and this delamination can lead to a sudden exposure of the base material, thus enabling its corrosion.
Therefore, both wear resistance and fatigue resistance should be increased in order to achieve a long lifetime of electrical contacts under fretting load.}},

  abstract     = {{Roller compaction/dry granulation (RC/DG) is a key process in pharmaceutical manufacturing for improving powder flowability, density, and segregation resistance. Advanced statistical modeling was used to optimize RC/DG process parameters and subsequently binder compositions by employing process and mixture design experiments. The authors used microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), silicified MCC (SMCC), and dicalcium phosphate (DCP) as filler-binder examples in RC/DG experiments. Granule and tablet properties, including flowability, bulk and tapped densities, as well as resistance to crushing, were analyzed using compendial methods. The process design experiments confirmed that RC/DG reduces manufacturability compared to direct compression. Optimal processing conditions, balancing sufficient tablet strengths and granule formation, were identified to be between 20 (SCF * ϑ) [kN/cm] and ∼ 60 (SCF * ϑ) [kN/cm]. Thereby (ϑ) is defined as the screw-to-roll speed ratio and (SFC) as the specific compaction force. Mixture design experiments revealed optimal mixtures balancing SMCC, MCC, and DCP to achieve desired properties like low angle of repose, high bulk density, and strong tablets. These findings provide guidance for selecting formulations and process parameters in RC/DG applications. The derived ‘SCF * ϑ’- factor was found to effectively describe the granulation intensity. A superimposed mixture design model based on precise target values of the parameters bulk density, flow properties, and breaking force allowed identification of the best formulation.}},

Spracherkennung auf das Spielerlebnis und die Immersion in virtuellen Umgebungen. Dabei 
wird analysiert, inwiefern eine dynamische Interaktion zwischen Spieler und NPC zur 
emotionalen Bindung beiträgt und das Eintauchen in die Spielwelt verstärkt. 
Zur Untersuchung wurde ein VR-Spielprototyp („Ward13“) entwickelt, in dem Spieler durch 
Spracherkennung frei mit einem NPC interagieren können. Theoretische Grundlagen aus den 
Bereichen Spieleentwicklung, Künstliche Intelligenz, Virtual Reality und interaktive Narration 
bilden die Basis der Analyse. Die praktische Implementierung erfolgte mittels der Convai
Plattform in Unreal Engine, ergänzt durch Sentiment-Analyse zur Anpassung des NPC
Verhaltens. 
Die Arbeit zeigt zudem, wie KI-Integration auch für Entwickler ohne KI-Erfahrung umsetzbar 
ist. Dabei wird die Zugänglichkeit bestehender Tools sowie die Herausforderungen bei der 
Implementierung und Anpassung von NPC-Verhalten analysiert. 
Die Evaluation des Prototyps wurde durch Nutzerstudien und Befragungen durchgeführt. Die 
Ergebnisse zeigen das Potenzial von Spracherkennung zur Verbesserung der Immersion und 
verdeutlichen gleichzeitig Optimierungsmöglichkeiten sowie die praktischen Anforderungen für 
Entwickler. Die Arbeit gibt einen Überblick über die technischen Möglichkeiten der KI
Integration und deren Bedeutung für zukünftige Entwicklungen im Bereich immersiver VR
Spiele. }},

  abstract     = {{Solketal and oxymethylene ether (OME) are two promising blending candidates for regenerative fuels (e-fuels), which could contribute to a holistic solution to the energy crisis. In this study the thermo-oxidative aging of these two e-fuels in their pure form as well as in binary mixtures with different ratios (3:1, 1:1, and 1:3) (vol%) is investigated. Herein, the reaction networks of the thermo-oxidative aging process of both e-fuels and mixtures thereof is elucidated based on intermediates and decomposition products determined via GC-MS. Furthermore, changes of important fuel-specific parameters like kinematic viscosity and density as well as total acid number during aging have been determined. The 3:1 solketal:OME (vol%) mixture exhibits a higher stability to thermo-oxidative aging than the pure fuel components or mixtures with other ratios. The viscosity value of this mixture is within the DIN EN 590 norm after accelerated aging of 72 h (viscosity (72 h) = 4.25 mm(2)/s)) unlike other blends. The maximum value of the total acid number of this aged mixture reaches only similar to 29 % of the maximum value of aged pure OME and has the lowest value of all mixtures. Furthermore, the formation of a precipitate could be successfully suppressed in the 3:1 solketal:OME (vol%) mixture different from other mixtures. With these findings, this study contributes to the design of new sustainable fuels for the transport sector.}},

  abstract     = {{Forest succession alters soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics by changing litter quality of litter entering the soil and affecting microbial communities. However, few studies have explored how litter quality interacts with soil fungal communities to regulate SOC mineralization during successional changes in forest succession. We studied the relationship between litter quality, SOC mineralization, and associated fungal composition by conducting an in-situ decomposition experiment in a natural broadleaf forest and a pure Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) forest, where the succession in former forest arrested by structurally inferior bamboo grasses. On average, topsoil organic carbon mineralization increased by 73 % and subsoil by 233 % (only during autumn) following the broadleaf forest transitions to bamboo dominance. More decomposable litterfall in the bamboo forests increased the abundance of saprophytic fungi (e.g., Mortierellales and Chaetothyriales orders) and enhanced topsoil degradation functions, promoting SOC mineralization compared to the broadleaf forest. Higher water-soluble organic carbon content increased subsoil organic carbon mineralization by increasing the abundance of Mortierellales order. Our results emphasized the importance of interaction between litter quality and fungal composition (especially saprophytic fungi) regulated SOC mineralization in arrested succession. The enhanced SOC mineralization after the broadleaf forest transition to bamboo forest suggested that the traits of Moso bamboo, such as fast litterfall decomposition, can accelerate SOC mineralization to reinforce its dominance. By examining the role of microbial decomposition in regulating soil nutrient dynamics in the context of arrested succession, our study offered a unique mechanistic perspective on the belowground drivers of bamboo dominance, with important implications for forest structure and function.}},

  abstract     = {{Trophic interactions determine food web structure and influence biodiversity, community structure, ecosystem functioning, and food web responses to global change. These interactions are highly flexible, changing on temporal scales from diurnal to evolutionary times due to phenotypic plasticity, rapid evolution and species sorting. Small-scale experimental and theoretical studies of plankton interactions have demonstrated a high relevance of this flexibility for community dynamics and ecosystem processes in small, simplified communities. However, the extent to which this flexibility affects larger-scale systems, for example, global ocean dynamics and their responses to global change, is still poorly understood. Differences in methodology, focus and terminology between research disciplines limit our ability to project established effects of flexible trophic interactions onto larger spatial and temporal scales. We propose to bridge this gap with a general framework for upscaling knowledge from small-scale research to large-scale models. Building on examples from plankton communities, we use this framework to show how mechanisms demonstrated in small-scale studies can be linked to ecosystem functions relevant at large scales. We argue for incorporating flexibility in large-scale process-based models to improve their realism and predictive power, and discuss challenges and ways forward for achieving this. Finally, we suggest several concrete ways for upscaling small-scale studies to make their findings more relevant for large-scale research, to close existing knowledge gaps and to improve our understanding of how flexible trophic interactions affect dynamics and processes across scales.}},

  abstract     = {{Winter cover crops (CCs) provide substantial agronomic and environmental benefits, yet their influence on nitrogen (N) fertilization requirements and yield outcomes for subsequent crops remains underexplored. This study investigates the economic optimal nitrogen rates (EONRs) and corresponding yield effects for first (silage maize or sugar beet) and second (winter wheat) succeeding crops following CCs. Four CC species from different functional groups were compared to a bare fallow control on contrasting sandy and loamy soils across four German field sites over two consecutive cropping sequences. Results revealed opposing effects: reduced EONR and increased N use efficiency on sandy soils in silage maize sequences, particularly following oil radish and rye CCs, but increased EONR on loamy soils for sugar beet sequences, with vetch CC showing the most favourable outcomes. Yield impacts varied by CC type and soil, with oil radish consistently enhancing yields across sites. However, CC effects on EONR were not correlated with pre-winter N uptake in CC biomass, challenging simple N budgeting practices. Environmental analysis highlighted potential greenhouse gas savings via reduced fertilizer inputs on sandy soils but increased upstream emissions on loamy sites. These findings emphasize the need for site-specific CC selection to balance economic and environmental benefits, with oil radish and vetch emerging as optimal choices in our trials for sandy and loamy soils, respectively.}},

  abstract     = {{Lentic waters integrate atmosphere and catchment processes, and thus ultimately capture climate signals. However, studies of climate warming effects on lentic waters usually do not sufficiently account for a change in heat flux from the catchment through altered inflow temperature and discharge under climate change. This is particularly relevant for reservoirs, which are highly impacted by catchment hydrology and may be affected by upstream reservoirs or pre‐dams. This study explicitly quantified how the catchment and pre‐dams modify the thermal response of Rappbode Reservoir, Germany's largest drinking water reservoir system, to climate change. We established a catchment‐lake modeling chain in the main reservoir and its two pre‐dams utilizing the lake model GOTM, the catchment model mHM, and the stream temperature model Air2stream, forced by an ensemble of climate projections under RCP2.6 and 8.5 warming scenarios. Results exhibited a warming of 0.27/0.15°C decade<jats:sup>−1</jats:sup> for the surface/bottom temperatures of the main reservoir, with approximately 8%/24% of this warming attributed to the catchment warming, respectively. The catchment warming amplified the deep water warming more than at the surface, contrary to the atmospheric warming effect, and advanced stratification by about 1 week, while having a minor impact on stratification intensity. On the other hand, pre‐dams reduced the inflow temperature into the main reservoir in spring, and consequently lowered the hypolimnetic temperature and postponed stratification onset. This shielded the main reservoir from climate warming, although overall the contribution of pre‐dams was minimal. Altogether, our study highlights the importance of catchment alterations and seasonality when projecting reservoir warming, and provides insights into catchment‐reservoir coupling under climate change.}},

  abstract     = {{One of the greatest challenges facing environmental science is to better understand the impacts of predicted future changes in the terrestrial hydrological cycle. It has been recognized that human activities play a key role and must therefore be considered in future climate simulations. The representation of anthropization in land surface schemes within global earth system models is at a relatively nascent stage and must be improved for more accurate future projections of water resources. The understanding of the impact of anthropogenic processes has been hampered by the lack of consistent and extensive observations. Here, we present the Land surface Interactions with the Atmosphere over the Iberian Semi-arid Environment (LIAISE) project field campaign which brought together ground-based (surface energy budget estimated at 7 sites, 269 radio soundings made at 2 sites and multiple remote sensing instruments for profiling the lower atmosphere), airborne measurements (3 airplanes and numerous drones measuring surface and atmospheric properties) and satellite data (to derive estimates of irrigation timing, soil moisture, evapotranspiration and surface temperature) to improve our understanding of key natural and anthropogenic land processes and boundary layer feedbacks. The study area is in the Ebro basin of northeastern Spain in a hot, dry Mediterranean climate, with a sharp demarcation between a vast intensively irrigated region and a much drier rainfed zone to the east. Analysis of the observations reveal strong surface heterogeneities of evapotranspiration within the irrigated zone (differences upwards of approximately 7 mm day-1 between fields), linked to the crop type, vegetation phenology and soil moisture, all of which were modulated by irrigation. The significant surface flux differences between the irrigated and rainfed zones were found to result in strongly contrasting atmospheric boundary layer properties (between 2 supersites​ separated by 14 km) extending upwards through the lowest several km of the atmosphere.}},

  abstract     = {{Sustainability in the food chain and the prevention of food losses is an issue of increasing importance. There is a large number of processing by-products where innovative strategies are helpful for transferring these losses into a consumable state. In a step-by-step approach, this current study focused on the sensory properties of blends of sunflower press cake and whey, fermented with different consortia of microorganisms and intended for being used as a basis for a savory spread. In the first part of the work, blends fermented with six co-cultures from lactic acid bacteria and yeasts were characterized by free choice profiling and quantitative descriptive analysis. The respective results were used to modify the formulation and to select the fermentation cultures that were promising from a sensory point of view. Subsequent investigations allowed reducing sample dimensionality further, and the study was concluded by affective hedonic tests and a check-all-that-apply set-up performed by consumers. The final experiment also comprised a just-about-right approach performed for specifically evaluating spreadability. The outcome of the entire study indicates that it is possible to tailor attractive foods from by-products, provided that the need for final optimizations regarding palatability is considered.}},

  abstract     = {{Carrot juice is valued for its high vitamin and antioxidant content, necessitating gentle thermal processing
to preserve these nutrients. Its slightly acidic pH value requires a two-step heating process, warranting
optimization to enhance product quality and resource efficiency. This study investigated the impact of
varying the first heating step between 100 and 130 °C on chemical, sensory, and microbiological parameters.
While other chemical parameters remained stable, lactic acid content increased significantly from 55 to 1405
mg/L over downtimes, highlighting the influence of external factors that could not be influenced within the
investigations. Lower heating temperatures compromised microbiological stability, with spore-forming
bacteria (5 colony forming units per 20 mL) detected at just a 10 °C reduction. Sensory quality showed
minimal change, with descriptive analysis identifying only 3 respectively 4 significantly different attributes
out of 19 across the factors experimental parameter setting and technical repetition. The quality of raw
materials had a more pronounced impact on sensory outcomes than the heating temperature. This study
concludes that adjusting the first heating temperature has limited benefits for sensory quality but risks
microbiological safety. Emphasis should therefore be placed on ensuring high-quality raw materials and
consistent raw juice properties to maintain product quality.}},

  abstract     = {{Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (P3HB) is a promising alternative to persistent conventional plastics, capable of biodegrading within months. However, its microbial-driven degradation raises concerns about nutrient immobilization and impacts on plant growth. The biodegradation process occurs in multiple stages, during which shifts in the microbial community can alter soil properties and influence utilization of both intrinsic and polymer-derived organic matter. This study employs a novel approach to investigate how nutrient dynamics during the late stage of P3HB biodegradation affect lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. capitata cv. Brilliant) growth. Soil-to-sand mixtures (100_0, 80_20, 60_40, 40_60, 20_80, and 0_100 ratios) were spiked with P3HB, allowed to biodegrade for eight weeks, and then planted with sprouted lettuce seeds, which were cultivated for another eight weeks. P3HB addition inhibited plant growth and root development in all soil-sand mixtures. However, increasing the sand proportion enhanced plants' nitrogen content by 13-45 % compared to 100 % soil + P3HB. Depending on the sand-to-soil ratio, P3HB stimulated most enzymes involved in carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus acquisition. Basal and substrate-induced respirations were 9-209 % higher under P3HB addition compared to P3HB-free soil, likely due to an increase in the stabilized soil organic matter fraction. Residual P3HB analysis revealed that diluting soil with 20 % sand accelerated biodegradation, despite a decrease in bacterial abundance. In the 80_20 variant, the microbial community shifted toward higher fungal abundance, 19 % more than in 100_0 soil. While microbial proliferation was observed, it effect was outweighed by negative impacts on dry aboveground and root biomass. The highest P3HB biodegradation rate occurred in the 80_20 variant, underscoring soil texture as a critical factor in P3HB biodegradation. While microbial communities can degrade bioplastics, this process may compromise plant nutrient availability and hinder plant growth. }},
