Studying or completing a practical semester abroad offers—in addition to personal enrichment—an opportunity to distinguish yourself. This allows you to demonstrate to your future employer how open-minded and flexible you are. Furthermore, studying abroad often complements your professional qualifications and serves as optimal preparation for a future career that is, at least in part, internationally oriented. This is complemented by the opportunity to deepen your foreign language skills.
There are many options for studying abroad during your degree program: You can spend an entire semester abroad, or you can complete your practical training phase or an internship abroad during the semester break. You can spend a semester abroad at one of the department’s partner universities, or you can apply on your own for a spot at a university with which the department does not have a partnership.
A stay abroad must always be well planned and requires a certain amount of lead time. Depending on the destination country, planning should begin approximately six to twelve months before the planned stay. For general questions about studying abroad (funding options, information about the destination country, preparation, etc.), the university’s International Office is available to assist. For academic questions, such as those regarding the transfer of credits or inquiries about partner universities, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jan Visscher, the International Coordinator for the Department of Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences, is the contact person.
Information for Incomings
Are you interested in spending a semester abroad or conducting research at the Department of Civil Engineering? To ensure that both sides benefit from your stay, you should first consider whether your German language skills are sufficient. Of course, you don’t need to speak German perfectly, but you should at least have a basic understanding of the language and be able to communicate in everyday situations.
