FAQ
On this page, we have listed the answers to the most frequently asked questions on our core topics of transition from study to working life, scholarships and study methodology courses. If you have any further questions that are not answered here, please contact us and make an appointment for an individual consultation.
Transition from your studies to working life
In addition to the learning opportunities offered by TH OWL, there are also opportunities to get involved on a voluntary basis. This is also possible directly at the university, e.g. by joining the student council or AstA, Radio Triquency and other university groups and institutions. Student part-time jobs, e.g. as a tutor, also offer you the opportunity to think outside the box and expand your personal, social and methodological skills. Such commitment or a part-time job will be welcomed by future employers on your CV - provided, of course, that your studies do not suffer as a result! The Career Service also offers workshops on soft skills that are important for your career. Please register via the Career Center.
You must find a suitable internship yourself. The teaching staff in your department and the Career Service will support you with information, advice and the publication of interesting job advertisements in the Career Center.
You can start by finding companies that may be of interest to you:
- Make a list of companies via trade associations, exhibitor registers at trade fairs, chambers of commerce or other business associations.
- Most companies have a special careers section on their websites where you can also find internships.
- Attend Career Services events where companies provide information about their career opportunities.
- Talk to fellow students from higher semesters and ask them where they completed their internship and benefit from their experience.
Last but not least, make use of your networks. Internships are often filled through personal relationships. So if you know someone who knows someone...
You should apply to your dream companies at least 3 months before completing your studies. The application for internships should start even earlier, in this case 6 months before the start of the internship period is recommended.
In both cases, it is important to start preparing your application (how do I put together my application documents, how can I convincingly express my (personal) strengths in writing, etc.) earlier. In particular, you should gather initial information about what jobs are available and what requirements the companies have about a month before you start applying.
To get in touch with companies, we recommend visiting a career and job fair or participating in other events where company representatives are present (conferences, lectures, career service events with companies, networking events, etc.).
- Cover sheet (optional)
- Cover letter or letter of motivation
- CV
- Current transcript of records
- University transcripts and an overview of courses takeN
- Work references, if available
- Certificates of relevant further training
It is important that you read the job advertisements carefully and match your own application with them as far as possible. It is also important to take into account the company's wishes regarding the application documents. For example, it is not alwaysthe case that an application photo is requested, sometimes this is even expressly not desired; a photo is no longer a mandatory part of applications.
You can download resources (templates, guidelines) on the individual elements of an application from the Career Center. The Career Service also offers workshops on writing applications throughout the semester.
There is no general answer to this question. It depends on what career goals and personal objectives you are pursuing.
It is usually easy to structure your inclinations, wishes and goals in a personal discussion. The Career Service or the Graduate Center will be happy to help you with these questions.
Career Center
First of all, you have access to the university's job board, where our partner companies publish job offers exclusively for TH OWL students and graduates. In addition, you have access to many job offers that are published via the JobTeaser network. You have many options to filter according to your individual and current needs.
In the Career Center, you also have the option of booking consultation appointments with Career Service advisors and uploading documents if required.
You can also easily and conveniently register for all our workshops and events organized by/with our partner companies.
You can also use the Career Center like a professional social network: you can upload your CV, specify what you are currently looking for and make your profile visible for recruiters to find you. You can also share experiences about jobs and internships with other students and find out about companies. You can also do this via the company profiles that you can find via the Career Center, where companies present themselves and their entry opportunities in more detail.
To ensure that you can continue to access the Career Center after your graduation, it is important that you change your e-mail address in your account settings:
- To do this, before you graduate, click on "Account Settings" in the Career Center.
- Replace your university e-mail address with your private e-mail address. This must be your main e-mail address.
- Click on "Save" and log out.
- Open the alumni link: "https://th-owl.jobteaser.com/users/sign_in.
- Reset your password. You are then ready to log in.
The Career Center offers a wide range of functions that we cannot develop and support on our own. That is why we have decided - like over 500 other universities in Europe - to work together with JobTeaser in order to offer you the best possible service.
JobTeaser is subject to the DSGVO. Details on use can be found in the terms of use and privacy policy. The data protection and data security department of TH OWL was closely involved in the selection of JobTeaser and in the drafting of the cooperation agreement and we are still in contact with the employees.
We are aware that you have urgent concerns and therefore aim to offer you an appointment as soon as possible. Experience has shown that finding an appointment by e-mail is very time-consuming. We therefore ask you to book one of the available appointments directly in the consultation appointment module. If you are unable to make an appointment during our office hours, please give us a call and we will be happy to find an appointment outside of office hours. This also applies to topics that concern you but are not listed as an appointment type in the Career Center. Please contact us.
We would also ask you to cancel appointments that you are unable to keep so that others can make use of them.
In order to better plan our free events, especially in cooperation with companies and other external speakers, we make use of a registration process that gives us an overview of the number of participants.
A minimum number of participants is required for certain events. This applies, for example, when event formats are based on forms of cooperative work. Our speakers invest time and a great deal of commitment in the events they offer free of charge and have a legitimate interest in knowing how many participants would like to take advantage of the offer, as the resources they invest in planning and running the event are not otherwise available during this time.
We are aware that there is a great desire to spontaneously decide to attend events, and we endeavor to give you as much leeway as possible. However, we also need to give our speakers planning security. You can therefore register up to one week before the event. As long as there are enough registrations or places are still available for events with limited participation, you can still register after the registration deadline.
However, we would ask you to unsubscribe from events at the Career Center if you cannot or no longer wish to attend, which gives us the opportunity to offer your place to other interested parties. It is also not unimportant for our speakers whether you come or not, because they plan their event for the number of people who are registered.
Scholarships
There is a scholarship officer in your department who is available to answer general questions. The Career Service will also be happy to advise you.
Since there exists a large number of scholarship programs and they differ not only in the type of funding, it is best to ask your questions directly via the contact of the funding organization/foundation. You can always find these contact details on the websites of the funding organizations/foundations.
Financing your studies or PhD studies with a scholarship has the great advantage that you do not have to pay the money back, as would be the case with BAföG or a student loan, for example.
Most foundations also support their scholarship holders by networking with other scholarship holders.
In addition, most foundations also offer non-material support, e.g. in the form of conferences, seminars and further training or mentoring programs in which scholarship holders can participate. This is very valuable for your future career.
There are a large number of different donors. There are foundations from political parties, religious organizations, but also from companies, private individuals and various institutions.
The e-fellows scholarship database, for example, is a good place to start. There you will find numerous suggestions for scholarship providers and can tailor your search even more precisely using various parameters.
You can find an overview of scholarships for students who would like to go abroad or students who are coming from abroad to study at TH OWL here.
It is not possible to define a standard amount or minimum amount here, as whether and how much money you will receive varies from funding organization to funding organization. The best way to find out is to contact the respective funding organization directly.
This varies greatly, but can take up to 6 months. You should always take a look at the respective website and contact the respective funding organization directly for more information.
This depends on the scholarship you receive. In the case of a scholarship for your studies, the funding can only apply to individual semesters, but can also extend to funding for the entire course of study. It is always best to obtain information directly from the respective funding organization.
Absolutely!
There are now a large number of scholarships that are no longer only awarded to highly gifted students: Partial and full scholarships, those for stays abroad or conference participation, scholarships to support special target groups or specific phases in studies and doctorates.
There are often far fewer applications than there are scholarships to award, so the chances are often not as small as expected.
The criteria include various aspects depending on the funding program and are usually combined with each other. Grades, talent, economic situation, social/societal commitment, major field of study and family situation are just a few examples of the criteria.
For PhD students, the academic quality of the doctoral project can also be a selection criterion.
You should always obtain information on this directly from the respective funding organization. Most of the larger funding organizations also list their criteria on their websites.
The application process for scholarships also varies. As a rule, applications are first submitted in writing. With most funding organizations, this can also be done online, i.e. via an application portal or by email.
In addition to a letter of motivation, a letter of reference or letter of recommendation is often required. This letter of recommendation serves as a positive reference for the applicant. This can be issued by professors or private lecturers, full-time teachers or research assistants from the applicant's own degree program or, in the case of first-year students, also by teachers.
You should always contact the respective funding organization directly for information about the process, as most funding organizations also provide very detailed information about the application process on their website.
The Career Service regularly (1-2 times a year) offers an intensive scholarship application workshop. In addition, you are welcome to have your application documents checked by our Career Service staff before submitting them to a funding organization. Please send us your documents by e-mail and indicate which funding organization you would like to apply to.
