Technologies of Digital Transformation

In digitalization, the focus is on optimizing the interaction between people, machines, and products through the creation of a Cyber-Physical System (CPS). In the CPS, physical objects, each of which also has a digital representation, should be able to interact with each other independent of location, in an interoperable and flexible manner. Digitalization aims to, among other things, make products more affordable, faster, and produced sustainably, meet customer requirements better and in a more personalized way, and support people in critical decision-making processes or manual tasks. Due to the increasing complexity of production systems and the ever-shortening lifecycles of products, progress in digitalization is no longer a matter of prestige but a necessity to remain competitive.

The greatest challenges in creating customer value and developing a unique selling proposition often do not stem from a lack of technologies or methods, but rather from the highly individual requirements of use cases and the necessary blend of technological solutions, accompanying business models, and pricing. This is precisely where the core of the applied research of this working group lies, namely in the development of competitive digital solutions for the industry.

Our main areas of focus include:

  • Digital industrial services (such as "control as a service") using suitable IoT technologies.
  • Quality of Service communication for heterogeneous industrial systems, considering aspects such as latency, reliability, security, energy, etc.
  • Management of complex IoT systems.
  • Utilization of digital twins (administration shells) and the development of new business models.
  • Potential analyses of new IoT technologies and their applicability in the industry.
