Anyone who is interested in subjects from the world of computer science and information technology as well as of pharmaceutical technology, microbiology, biopharmaceutical and biomedical engineering and would later like to work in the field of medical and health technology is in exactly the right place with us.
Social changes are increasingly shaping the medical treatment and care of people. Individual needs lead to new, digital approaches in medical technology and health research. This results in completely new concepts and methods in the interaction of pharmacological, microbiological and biotechnological areas with the subject-specific topics of data science and computer science. On the one hand, this has an impact on individualized medicine, in which tailor-made prevention and therapy procedures are developed while taking into account active substances, pharmaceuticals and nutritional aspects. On the other hand, medical and health technology is opening up to new data-driven analysis and diagnostic tools, mobile applications, human-machine interactions and assistance systems.
Owing to the cooperation between the Department of Life Science Technologies and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, these topics can be optimally addressed at TH OWL in the research master "Smart Health Sciences": While the Department of Life Science Technologies is characterized by expertise in the areas of microbiology, biotechnology, pharmaceutical technology as well as cosmetics and detergents in its research cluster “Applied Health Sciences”, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science prepares for the challenges of digitalization in areas of data science, big data, artificial intelligence, Industry 4.0, information fusion and human-machine interaction in its Institute Industrial IT (inIT). The program is supported by teaching physicians from Clinic Lippe and by the Detmold School of Architecture and Interior Architecture, which contributes profound experiences in the fields of environmental medicine, product design and ergonomics.
As the study contents address current and future tasks in business, science and the public, the graduates of the degree program have excellent career prospects. Possible fields of professional activity are located in the medical and health industry, in research and development, production, assembly, service and sales. Other employment opportunities can be found in hospitals, clinics and other medical facilities such as laboratories, as well as in engineering, consulting, software or even insurance companies.
