Intelligent Systems for an Automated and Sustainable Future

The Faculty of Computer Science and Automation is distinguished by its strong research profile at the intersection of computer science, artificial intelligence, and automation. Our projects focus on AI-driven industrial automation, for example through cognitive robotics, on autonomous and sustainable mobility, and on resource-efficient systems.
Research activities are consolidated within our institutes, the Institute for Industrial Information Technology (inIT) and the Institute for Energy Research (iFE).
A distinctive feature of the faculty is its close and long-standing collaboration with Fraunhofer IOSB-INA, which significantly strengthens the practice-oriented transfer of research results into industrial applications.
The Institute for Energy Research (iFE) develops efficient, networked, and innovative solutions for sustainable energy systems in the areas of districts, mobility, and industry.
The Institute for Industrial Information Technology (inIT) is a leading research institution in industrial information technology and automation, developing technologies for intelligent technical systems. Its core areas include industrial communication, image processing, computer intelligence, and human-technology interaction, realized through numerous publicly funded research projects and industry collaborations.
The Fraunhofer IOSB-INA (Institute of Industrial Automation, part of Fraunhofer IOSB) is a leading research partner in intelligent automation and digital transformation, supporting companies and cities in developing and applying innovative automation solutions. Its core focus lies on networking, analysis and user-centered design of technical systems.
SmartFactoryOWL is a vendor-independent research and demonstration platform for intelligent, networked, and adaptable production systems. It enables the practical validation of AI, automation, and Industry 4.0 solutions in real industrial environments.
The UrbanLand Mobility Center is a regional platform for innovative and sustainable mobility solutions. It connects universities, research institutions, municipalities, and companies to develop and test autonomous, digital, and future-oriented mobility concepts in real-world settings.
OWITA is based in Lemgo, in the heart of East Westphalia-Lippe. From its humble beginnings in a simple construction container, the company has grown enormously and now has its place in the CENTRUM INDUSTRIAL IT (CIIT), the first science-to-business center for industrial automation in Germany. Here, we are part of a vibrant network with a vision of linking industry with research. This gives us access to the brightest minds and leading experts, as well as insight into the latest trends and topics in digitalization and automation technology.
