Research is also conducted on an ongoing basis through doctoral dissertations at the Institute for Design Strategies. Theses can be registered and supervised within the NRW Doctoral College, where the defense and conferral of the doctoral degree also take place. Cooperative doctoral programs can also be conducted at German and European universities, in which the primary supervision, defense, and conferral of the doctoral degree take place at the respective department, while further thematic supervision is provided by a faculty member of the IDS.
