Through its three research clusters — Data Driven Design, Regenerative Design, and Human Centered Design — the IDS aims to identify synergies between the various scales of our living environment and the diverse aspects and values of sustainability. The goal is to explore and discuss sustainable design strategies for future development dynamics.

Research at the Intersection of Digitalization and Design - The potential of digital technologies is transforming the value chain in urban development, construction, and planning. AR/VR, the Internet of Things (IoT), and various facets of Artificial Intelligence (AI) promise more efficient processes, greater participation, and a deeper understanding of how spatial environments influence people.

Research at the Intersection of Environment and Design - The global challenges of climate change and the energy transition demand a radical transformation of the built environment. An additional key issue is how to deal with 20th-century buildings, which make up around 80% of the existing stock and currently fall short of meeting the requirements for climate protection, energy efficiency, and circular economy principles.

Research at the Intersection of Health and Design - Ensuring the highest possible quality of life with inclusive participation is a key driver for society. However, knowledge about the connections between the architectural and urban systems we interact with daily and their impact on behavior and lifestyle is still underdeveloped.
