Typha Insulation Material
Product Chains from Lowland Peat Biomass

Project: Restoration and Development of Management Methods in Lowland Peatlands
Drained peatlands, often used as pasture, emit more greenhouse gases than “wet” peatlands.
- Development of different utilisation options for the restored peatlands for plant cultivation
- Use of the plant material for various purposes: horticultural substrate and construction material
- Development of different insulation materials based on Typha angustifolia (cattail): loose-fill insulation, rigid insulation, and insulation boards
- Development and construction of an experimental production facility by project participants in cooperation with TH OWL
- Construction of a test rig and experimental building for insulation materials by Jade University in Oldenburg in cooperation with TH OWL
Building Regulation Approval:
- Material building law is governed by state law
- Model Building Code (MBO)
- MVV TB
- DIBt (MBO, MVV TB, abZ, abP, aBG)
Non-regulated construction products require a usability verification and a conformity confirmation according to §§ 17–25 MBO:
- General building authority approval (abZ)
- General building authority test certificate (abP)
- Individual case approval (ZiE)
If a construction product is intended to contribute significantly to structural load-bearing, it is considered a construction type.
Non-regulated construction types require an applicability verification and a conformity confirmation according to § 16a MBO:
- General construction type approval (aBG)
- General building authority test certificate (abP)
- Or project-specific construction type approval
