RoNNi

Pioneering research project on the sustainable production and use of cattails

Project:
The project focuses on research into the sustainable cultivation and utilization of cattails on rewetted peatland sites in Lower Saxony (short title: “RoNNi”). Cattails can serve as an alternative construction or insulation material and become a climate-friendly factor in the building industry. However, extensive tasks lie ahead, in which TH OWL plays a central role. These include determining the legal foundations for building applications, developing construction concepts, and analyzing environmental impacts. Further work involves the analysis of standards, the execution of fire tests, and the development of design concepts for construction types. In addition, the environmental impacts during the cultivation, harvesting, and processing of plant materials are being thoroughly investigated. Based on these studies, templates and product-specific Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for Typha-based building materials can be developed.
