Transfer

Research cannot stop where empirical knowledge has emerged; rather, for feasibility and sustainable urban renewal, it is dependent on transferring this knowledge and engaging in exchange with business, politics and society about it.

In addition to various events during the year, theIDS Conference (former Detmold Conference Week) is a focal point of our work. Furthermore, we publish discussion contributions from research in our journal Design Strategies - Magazine for the Built Environment, as well as in our Impulses. You can always keep up to date with the newsletter.

Overview of Current Events

27. November 2025 – IDS Conference

Cities and municipalities face the urgent task of adapting to the impacts of climate change. But how can the leap from understanding to implementation be achieved? While research develops innovative methods and indicators, local administrations struggle with limited resources and complex coordination processes. Planning offices must constantly stay informed about the latest technologies and changing legal frameworks. Universities need to consider which skills future urban designers will require to address the climate crisis.

This year's IDS Conference brings these different perspectives together and discusses concrete design strategies in thematic panels that accelerate and ensure successful municipal climate adaptation. Drawing on proven practical experiences from North Rhine Westphalia and beyond, practice oriented solutions emerge at the intersection of scientific evidence, administrative feasibility, economic viability, social engagement and educational conveyance. The panel results will be consolidated and reflected upon at the conclusion.

Design Strategies

Professional Journal for the Built Environment

Since 2016, the urbanLab magazine has been published annually as a specialist journal for urban and regional planning with the aim of linking research, teaching and practice in the planning disciplines of the field of tension between city and neighborhood on the basis of specific topic clusters. In the future, the magazine will appear under the name Design Strategies as a professional journal for the built environment. It will focus on contributions to regenerative and human-centered design of the environment and the opportunities of digitalization. We give a platform to forward-looking ideas, specialist articles, publications and controversial discussions, and bring them to the point supported by findings from our research.
