Delignification of lignocellulose by electrochemical activation, lignocellulose analytics and fermentation

Aim: Lignocellulose is in the focus of strategies for future biomass utilization. There are still no economical large-scale processes for its digestion, so that the utilization of residual materials such as straw, bark and forest residues has not played a role so far, e.g. in ethanol production. This technical gap is to be closed in the project.

The company Aquagroup AG specializes in the construction of plants for the electrochemical activation of brine for the production of oxidative sodium hypochlorite solutions.

The HS OWL (now TH OWL) has tested a method for the digestion of fermentable carbohydrates from lignocellulose with the help of this process.

In the course of the project, the method is to be optimized and further developed. Two different reactor types will be tested and a pilot reactor will be built.
