"Effectively addressing the challenges of climate change"

From November 10 to 13, students from the Landscape Planning and Nature Conservation degree program at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) visited Ostwestfalen-Lippe and met with fellow students in the Landscape Architecture degree program at TH OWL for a workshop and field trip.

The meeting first took the students to the forest of the Lippe Regional Association, where Susanne Hoffmann, head of the forestry department, discussed the consequences of climate change for regional forest development with the students. Another excursion took them to Hiddeser Bent, the last remaining raised bog in the Teutoburg Forest. There, they discussed the climate protection function of moors and wetlands – accompanied by the expertise of Fabian Fester, Lippe Biological Station. 

On the second day, the focus was on the adaptation of urban spaces to climate change. Together with Susanne Hoffjann, head of the Department of Open Space Planning, the students discussed the implementation of the sponge city principle in Detmold's city center.

At the concluding World Café, the students developed initial ideas for climate-friendly landscape development under the motto "Detmold 2050." Based on their impressions from the excursion and a specialization in landscape analysis, scenarios and concrete recommendations for action will be developed by the end of the semester and presented in the planning region.

The event is part of a collaboration between the section of Landscape Planning, Landscape Ecology, and Nature Conservation at TH OWL and the Chair of Strategy and Management of Landscape Development at TUM, and is supervised by Natalie Koch and Jana Igl, landscape planner and philosopher at TUM, as well as Professors Christian Jolk and Werner Rolf from TH OWL.

"Not only does this create a lively exchange between theory and practice, but students also work together to develop solutions to specific social challenges posed by climate change. The participants' commitment was particularly impressive—that's exactly what we need to effectively address the challenges of climate change."
