Last Friday, October 24, students from TH OWL visited HI-SCORE Hannover—an interactive video game museum with an impressive collection of game consoles, handhelds, and arcade machines from the past 50 years.
The excursion, organized by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the Institute for Science in Dialog as part of the transfer year, was very popular, with around 100 registrations. "I think the number of registrations speaks for itself. We are delighted that the topic has been so well received," notes Jan Pilgrim, Institute for Science in Dialog.
Students from the Faculty of Media Production and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science traveled to Hanover to spend half a day immersing themselves in the history, technology, and culture of video games. After an informative tour of the exhibition, the participants were given the opportunity to get hands-on and try out classic consoles as well as modern systems.
"Gaming is an important key component in generating enthusiasm for STEM subjects in the future," reports Dean Professor Dr. Rainer Rasche. "In the end, we almost had to pry the controllers out of the students' hands – that's how enthusiastic they were," adds Professor Dr. Josef Löffl from the Institute for Science in Dialog with a wink. Of course, the two doctoral/academic supervisors didn't miss the opportunity to join in the fun themselves.
In addition to gaming fun and nostalgia, the focus was primarily on scientific exchange: video games offer numerous points of contact – both technically and culturally. In discussions with the museum team, ideas for Theses and joint projects have already been developed, laying the foundation for future collaborations.
