Now available in German: UNESCO Learning Goals for Sustainable Development

Sustainable development requires new knowledge and action. What specifically should be taught? A guide is now available in German.

"TH OWL is guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)" – this is stated in our sustainability mission statement, which was developed in 2024 in a participatory process involving over 100 university members.

How can this orientation be integrated into teaching in concrete terms? A UNESCO document from 2017 provides very helpful guidance, but until now it has only been available in English. TH OWL Sustainability Management has now machine-translatedkey sections. 

In order to make this available not only internally but also across universities, the translation has been published in the wiki of the German Society for Sustainability at Universities (DG HochN) for general access.

The document offers a wealth of inspiration for education for sustainable development (ESD). It presents:

  1. Eight general key competencies that should be promoted with the help of ESD
  2. Five cognitive, socio-emotional, and behavioral learning objectives for each SDG
  3. Possible teaching topics and methods for each SDG
