Ninth international design award

Extraordinary success story: 52 GRAD has once again been recognized for its outstanding design quality. This time, the magazine has received the International Creative Media Award of Excellence 2025 in the category “Cover and Cover-Story”.

“This renewed international design award is an incredible honor for us,” explains Professor Dr. Martin Ludwig Hofmann, who founded the magazine of the Detmold School of Design at TH OWL 16 years ago and has since been resurrecting it year after year with changing student editorial teams.

“This is now the ninth international design award that we have received. The fact that we are constantly succeeding in designing at such a high level makes us very proud,” emphasizes Professor Hofmann.

What is special about this award is that the International Creative Media Award, which is presented annually for outstanding and innovative forms of design, is not a student competition. The students of the TH OWL, together with their professor, are competing with international competitors from professional agencies, publishers and companies.

This year, the international jury of design and communication experts had to evaluate 407 works from 21 countries. Submissions came from the USA, Brazil, China, Japan, India, Australia, France, Great Britain and Germany, among others.

52 GRAD is designed as an innovative teaching transfer project. What makes it special is that the students take on all the tasks themselves – from ad acquisition to editorial work to editorial design.

More than 310 students have worked on it so far, many of them several times. They are supported by Professor Hofmann, the Berlin designer Markus Tiggemann and Florian Zander, the press officer of the Detmolder School of Design department.
