Rainbow flags symbolize respectful coexistence in diversity at TH OWL

TH OWL sees itself as a place of freedom of art, culture, science, and expression. To allow the so-called ‚free spirit‘ to thrive, we do not follow any preconceived worldview. Rather, we aspire to convey a scientific approach to the world while remaining ideologically neutral. This naturally includes individual freedom to shape one's own life and the right to disagree.

Our self-conception is based on the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany, in which the German flag is a visual expression of our values. The Basic Law is the unshakeable foundation of our respectful and tolerant coexistence of people from diverse backgrounds, with different needs for inclusion, religions, worldviews, and lifestyles.

To welcome the new semester, we fly the German flag for a week, with its direct and exclusive reference to the Basic Law. We emphasize this clear stance by also flying the rainbow flag prominently on all campuses.

Living diversity encompasses tolerance of identity and opinion, as well as the willingness to always treat each other with respect and openness, even when worldviews and lifestyles differ or are even discursively opposed.

Against this backdrop, education (Bildung) means not only acquiring specialist knowledge, but also learning the ability to live together in diversity with mutual respect.

With this in mind, please take the time at the start of the semester to read the first 19 articles of the Basic Law:  www.gesetze-im-internet.de/englisch_gg/  or https://www.bpb.de/shop/buecher/grundgesetz/

Information and activities on diversity and inclusion can be found on our website.
