Water Technology Center in Münster: Field trip offers valuable insights into real-world applications

Last week, students from the bachelor’s programs in Environmental Science and Environmental Engineering, as well as the master’s program in Environmental Engineering and Modeling, visited the Water Technology Center in Steinfurt, which is affiliated with Professor Dr. Helmut Grüning at Münster University of Applied Sciences.

The group was accompanied by tour guides Alexandra Schaefer and Katharina Pilar von Pilchau from the Faculty of Construction and Environment.

The laboratory offered participants the opportunity to experience drinking water supply, wastewater treatment, and sewer systems. Highlights of the field trip included:

• the visualization of sewer lines with various flow conditions, materials, and damaged sections,

• a small drinking water treatment plant with various treatment techniques,

• sedimentation tests in rainwater settling basins,

• the demonstration of energy losses in channels, and

• the construction of tree trenches.

The students were particularly impressed by the Plexiglas channels, which clearly illustrated flow processes and technical procedures.

Positive Feedback

The young researchers were enthusiastic about the practical insights and the clear presentation by the team at Münster University of Applied Sciences. Among other comments, they said:

“The field trip gave us valuable insights into how sewer systems work, the treatment of drinking water, and the construction of tree trenches.”

“It was exciting to see how theoretical concepts are put into practice—the visualizations in particular made the processes very easy to understand.”

“The field trip was not only a lot of fun, but also led to specialization in the area of complex systems.”

Summary: The field trip gave students the opportunity to connect their theoretical knowledge from lectures with practical applications and to strengthen networks with fellow students and experts.
