International Women's Day 2026

The TH OWL equality team would like to draw attention to a special date: International Women's Day has been celebrated worldwide on March 8 since 1911. It is also known as World Women's Day, Women's Day, or Feminist Day of Action.

On this day, the achievements of women's rights movements to date are celebrated annually, while at the same time drawing attention to the discrimination and inequalities that still exist.

There are many examples of existing gender inequality. Violence against women, in particular, remains a major social problem. A study published in February entitled "Living Conditions, Safety, and Stress in Everyday Life," conducted by the Federal Criminal Police Office in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Ministry of Education, Family, Seniors, Women, and Youth, shows that women are more frequently and more severely affected by intimate partner and gender-based violence than men. This is particularly true in the case of sexual assault, sexual harassment, and stalking.

However, the majority of experiences of violence in Germany are not reported. The reporting rates are consistently low regardless of the form of violence perpetrated; for most forms of violence, they are less than ten percent. Within (former) partnerships, the reporting rates for psychological and physical violence are even below five percent.

Affected women can obtain free, round-the-clock help by calling the "Violence against Women" helpline on 116016 or online at: www.hilfetelefon.de
